Turn An iPod Into A Universal Remote 1970-01-01 00:59:59 If you're anything like me you have about ten remotes sitting on your living room coffee table and more piling up each day. It seems like every new gadget or toy comes bundled with a "convenient" new remote control. Hell, I have a remote for my TV, satellite receiver, DVD player, stereo, xbox, etc. I even have two for my computer for crying out loud!Well, the good people from Engadget have a relatively inexpensive solution to this little problem. They turn a regular iPod
(they used a mini) into a universal remote control, that works with any device that uses an infra red (IR) remote. So how did they do it?Essentially, they recorded the "sound" the IR remote (in their case a TV remote) made and transferred it to their computer, and in turn their iPod mini. They then rigged their mini up with a sound-IR device that would transfer the sound from the iPod into the IR signal needed to control the TV. It's really quite an impressive hack! Well, he bought a peltier cooler from eBay for about $15 and used two old heatsinks (1 hot, 1 cold) for the actual fridge components. He also used insulation tape he purchased from Home Depot to insulate the inside of the armrest. When he had all his components, Mike began working at the armrest. He took out the armrest's carpeting and cup holder and mounted the hot heatsink in the hole where the cup holder used to be.
