Alternative Medicine Gaining Acceptance 2008-01-15 14:42:00
For 14 years, Simon Muiruri has been treating people though he lacks formal education in medicine.
The traditional herbalist's clinic is in the outskirts of Gatundu town where he receives many patients-some suffering from chronic diseases- while others simply want to consult.
After quitting his job at ActionAid in 1989, Muiruri started researching on traditional healing practices and enrolled for training at Brantridge Forest School, where he learnt about plants and their healing powers.
In 1991, University of Nairobi's Faculty of Pharmacy and the Ministry of Culture certified him as a herbalist. And he has not looked back since. "I have been able to treat people with chronic diseases, " said the father of four who added that he earns about Sh70,000 a month.
