Supermarket Super savings-A word of Caution
2007-08-23 03:10:00
We have hundreds of supermarkets in the city, each competing with each other by offering great discounts, free items. So when you buy something from there you should get whatever discount they have declared. But the question is will you actually get it? What do you mean? Of course I get the discounts as promised when I buy and pay the bill…Are you sure? Think again. I have observed and experienced several times that there’ll be small differences in what price and offer displayed at the rack and what amount is shown in the cash bill. This difference is pretty small indeed and no one will notice unless you cross check each item and amount carefully. In other words, the displayed price doesn’t get mentioned in the cash bill and you will be paying more than what you thought you will pay for an item. When you buy 10-20 items totaling say a thousand rupee, you may never notice that an item or two were billed 10-20 rupees extra than its listed price. Because there’ll be a big queue of p

Shrinidhi in ETV Show-Recorded video
2007-08-26 09:54:00
Quick Summary: Shrinidhi Hande had participated in a television show in 2002 and you can see the video recording of that show and related details in this post. (if you have time read the related text, else scroll down to watch videos)Clip 1 clip2 Background Information:This was long overdue. Most of you might have seen my blogger profile picture and would have noticed ETV logo in the same and might be wondering if it is a digitally tampered image…Trust me, it is not. Way back in 2002, I had participated in a television show and this post is to share with you the recorded video of the same and related details.Clip 2What was this show? The program was titled Yuva Chavadi (Kannada for: Youth forum (not exactly though-chavadi means a place where people gather together and discuss)) It is basically a debate show. One topic is selected and people speak for and against it. There is no winners as such. The host, Aparna consolidates the points and ends the discussion. This show used to get tel

Radios are not that cheap
2007-08-26 09:25:00
Quick Summary: This post does a very brief comparison of FM and AM radios. With the rapid fall in prices of consumer electronics and home appliances, I was expecting portable radios to be pretty cheap. But recently found that they aren’t. Philips portable radio (AM and FM, not just FM) still costs Rs. 525 onwards, while entry level mobiles are available for an almost similar amount. Why so?There’re not many manufacturers who are still selling analog radio. With the advent of FM radio stations and since radios are coming built in with mobiles, mp3 players etc, there’s hardly any market left for Amplitude Modulation. However, reach of FM stations are confined to city limits and AM relays by All India Radio (AIR) stations are still is a major source of news and entertainment in most of the rural areas. Private FM channels do not have permission to broadcast news and are focused primarily on entertaining youth in metros by playing filmi music and airing shows aimed at urban audience an

How to access blocked blogs and sites? Try this alternative
2007-08-29 23:48:00
Unable to access a blog/website? Try Google cacheThis post is based on the concept: Something is better than nothing. For reasons best known to you, chances are that some of you might be facing “technical” problems opening “certain types” of web pages. It might not be possible for you to access a blogspot or a wordpress blog besides several other sites. While I’m not listing any proxies that can be used for this purpose or providing you with any other illegal ways of accessing restricted sites, I’m just reminding you of a simple feature available with leading search engines, which can compensate for the above to some extent. Techno savvy readers would be knowing this already and this post is for others who haven’t thought in this direction. If you’re unable to access a static web page directly (say http://enidhispeaks.blogspot.com , you can try accessing a stored version of this page from Google cache. To do this, open Google.com, type cache:enidhispeaks.blogspot.com in th

Blog Review and Blog Poll…
2007-08-29 01:39:00
RT Cunningham has reviewed my blog [link here] and has made some serious observations on the blog design and layout. I thank him for being frank and straightforward in his opinion and agree with most of his observations. None of the other visitors had written any serious comments on this blog layout so far, so I didn’t have a third party opinion on the same till date. RT’s review made me have a second look.Based on his observations and my own thinking, I’m in the process of implementing some changes to the layout. Hope the results will be appealing to all. Please drop a comment if you have anything to suggest/criticize about this blogs usability, title, colour combinations, sidebar contents and organizations, what is missing and what redundant etc. That will help me improve. In recent past I’ve removed several widgets (Google translator, a world map with visitor locations in it, a widget that showed how many live visitors are on this page this very moment etc) as I felt they are

SNOOPING
2007-08-28 01:18:00
Giving below an article I wrote during my engineering days, published in Silicon Times, a Bangalore based low profile computer and technology monthly, of which I was a member of editorial board. This is a 5 page long article and might take some time to read. Lot of things have changed in past 4 years since I wrote it, still the topic bears significance. If you wish to make a copy or take a printout to read it later, .pdf version of the article is available here. SNOOPINGPublished in Silicon Times, October 2003It's a general human tendency to have curiosity in the matters totally irrelevant to them. And when it comes to the Internet, this tendency always multifoldHave you ever felt that you’re being monitored? Your computer usage in particular: by your parents or employers or by some unidentified stranger. If your answer is yes then you know how troublesome it is to part with one’s privacy. If you say NO (Are you sure?), better be alert. Is it not a matter of co

Yaari, Desktopdating and other ill mannered websites
2007-08-31 05:31:00
An observation which I call a side effect of Web2.0 concept, many of the community websites are openly misusing webservice technology to increase their member base by invading everyone’s privacy under false identity. If the opening sentence appears confusing, read this:You get a mail which says “ABC wants you to join Yaari.com, click here to Join Yaari.com else ABC may think you said NO to his/her request” (See image). You know that person, so click YES or ACCEPT and you’re taken to registration page of that website, where you’re required to enter your email password besides other details. Without knowing the impact, you provide your email password as well and proceed with browsing the site. Next moment, everyone in your email contact book get an invitation, saying you’ve invited them to join YAARI.com…Later say while chatting, you tell ABC that you’ve accepted his/her Yaari.com invitation, he/she says he/she never sent you any invitation at all.If you’ve experienced a

Chennai MTC-Left half for ladies-why not front half?
2007-09-25 10:27:00
It is quite common in city buses (and other places) that a portion is reserved for women. Usually, front few rows (almost 50%) are reserved for lady passengers in most of the cities (Bangalore, Hyderabad etc). But in Chennai city buses (in ordinary buses) left half of the bus is reserved for women. I fail to understand on what logic this decision is taken. (I am NOT questioning why 50% is reserved for ladies . What I mean is reserving left half portion of the bus to ladies will not serve the actual purpose.)The drawbacks of reserving left half portion of the bus for ladies (as against front half) are as follows:Ladies do not get a dedicated space. They get mixed up with male passengers and this may not be good for them. They have to use both front and rear doors, fighting with male commuters (for standing seats, while boarding the bus or getting down etc). (Where front half is reserved for ladies the front door is usually not used by male passengers)Because of 2 doors and a conductor’s

Public toilets-Cant we make them free for usage?
2007-09-18 10:32:00
Disclaimer: This post is crafted purely on a business and commercial analysis and if you feel the contents are indecent it is to be treated purely as accidental. Your further reading of this post will be taken as your consent for above statement.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------Poor sanitation facilities is one of the reasons why most of our cities look ugly. Most of the population does not have the luxury of proper toilet facilities at their work place (and few do not have one even at their residence). Such people are expected to make use of public toilets (wherever there’s one) but many of them use public places are toilets even when they have access to a public toilet, the reason being, they are expected to pay a rupee or two, to use public toilets. If we can make the public toilets free for usage, more and more people will use it and our cities will look more clean and hygienic. In this post, I try to present a business model, which

Chennai MTC gets Volvo City Buses-Quick report
2007-09-17 00:58:00
This morning (17th Sep) I saw the ad released by Tamil Nadu govt in THE HINDU that they are launching Volvo City Buses in Chennai . Since my earlier post on Bangalore Volvo City buses was extremely popular [link here] I thought I'll write a similar post on Chennai Volvo. So here we go.It’s the same B7RLE variant of Volvo transit bus which is rocking Bangalore roads that will be hitting Chennai roads. If you ask me, the dashing red coloured Volvo in Bangalore, covered further with advertisements, looks a bit more attractive than the pale white colour Chennai Metropolitan has chosen. Nevertheless, it should be a good experience to Chennai commuters. (Even Singapore and several other countries use this same model...)While I intend to take more pictures of these buses during my next visit to Chennai, here’s one photo sourced from internet. Bangalore has a SMS based location identification service for Volvo city buses. Hope Chennaities can expect similar service (details here). MTC has

How Google can make Orkut a better place on net (A suggestion)
2007-09-13 08:12:00
Google (NYSE:GOOG) run community and social networking site Orkut .com has of late become a lawless jungle aiding all criminal and illegal activities. While several bloggers and media have written a lot either supporting or blaming orkut, in this post I try to find a solution for this, a suggestion which appears expensive but if implemented will make Orkut a much much better and safer place on internet.Current concerns with orkut:1.Allows anonymity, 2. No counter check mechanism to prevent creation of fake profiles, 3. One individual may have multiple online identities with different user names, 4. Physical identity of a member is difficult to trace, 5. Profiles are twisted with malicious intentions. What is the solution?Verify physical identity of each member by collecting a physical copy of their identity proof (Passport, Driving License etc). How to go about it?Verifying identity of millions of members will be a time consuming and expensive process, but this will give lots of benefits

Cyber Begging-Ask Money for anything and everything

(This magazine is out of publication now) This is a 4 page long article and might take some time to read. Big Bazaar-Things you would like to Know
2007-09-07 08:17:00
Recently I read the book “IT HAPPENED IN INDIA” by Kishore Biyani, the man who triggered retail revolution in India with shopping destinations like Pantaloon, Big Bazaar , Central etc. In this post I’m listing some key information extracted from this book, related to Big Bazaar in particular and retail industry in general that we as customers should know. I will write a detailed post covering other parts of this book in a separate review soon. Factors you should know about Big Bazaar: 1. The biggest customer for big bazaar till date is a farmer in Sangli whose bill amount was Rs. 1,37,367 2. If you use shopping malls as hang out places and do not buy anything there, you’re known as “mall rat” in retail parlance (pretty insulting uhh!) 3. “We ordered one lakh shirts at Rs 105 and sell them at Rs 149” this should give you an idea of operating margin they keep. (FYI: Later when these shirts were not getting sold the prices were brought down to Rs 129 and finally KB asks sto

Your blog can make or break your career! Achtung!
2007-09-05 04:10:00
The cover article in today’s (5th Sep '07) TOI Accent supplement is about employers reading the blogs of prospective employees to decide if they should hire a particular candidate or not. Reading one’s blog usually gives an insight into individual’s stand on various issues, attitude, writing skills, thinking pattern etc and provides lots of information which may not be noted from a resume or during a conventional interview.Read article here. Some tips in this regard:1. Avoid revealing personal information (You might have happily written somewhere “I hate to get up before 11 AM in the morning”-any manager who reads this will think “My office starts at 8.30 AM what is the probability that he/she will report to work on time?”)2. Do not use bad words, slangs and such cheap lingo, which create a very bad image of you. Use decent terms to express your emotion/anger whatever. 3. Do not get involved in plagiarism (publishing someone else’s content as your own). It is very easy

Watching news inside a movie...an observation
2007-10-02 04:06:00
This post shares a small observation made related to switching on TVs in movie s.Scenario: In a movie, something important is happening and one key person is not at al aware of this. His/her friend/business associate/relative etc calls him/her and asks “tumhne TV nahi dekha” (hindi for: You’ve not watched TV?) Now the person receiving the call says “Nahin, kya hua” (No. What happened?) and then switches on the TV.In all movies, following happens without fail:1. The viewer never needs to change the channel (The TV was set to the channel where the said news is being shown-In real life, there’s always a high probability that you’ll have to ask your caller on which channel the news he/she wants to tell is coming and then you’ll have to navigate to that channel)2. The news item begins from start once the TV is turned on (Usually you should miss initial few lines if you switched on few seconds late)3. They always switch off the TV after hearing one or two lines.(with anger, mo

Going out of town? Stay with fellow blogger…
2007-10-11 10:38:00
Attention: An earlier post on Chennai Volvo City Buses has been totally revamped with latest photos, timing and other observations. Read that hereThis information is sourced from Chennai Chronicle, a city supplement of Deccan Chronicle newspaper. (Oct 10 2007 Edition) Found it interesting and relevant hence sharing with you in this post.Suppose you need to go to a new city and need a place to stay. Hotel stay being expensive, how about staying with a fellow blogger? You can stay as a guest at the residence of a fellow blogger who agrees to host you. You can return the complements when that blogger visits your city by allowing him/her to stay at your place. Apparently, there’s a website called extrabed.in which was launched early this year which provides a platform for above purpose. If you’re willing to host bloggers visiting your city for a day or two, or are looking for someone who can host you during your visit to an alien city, this site allows that.Advantages are many. Job openings in semi skilled jobs...
2007-10-11 10:02:00
After being tormented by telecallers in Hyderabad, (Read: Ladies who call me everyday) I was expecting some peace (at least for initial few weeks) with my new mobile connection in Chennai. But then, the first call I got was a wrong number and first SMS I got was an advertisement. The SMS was sent by some individual and It reads as follows: Situation Vacant (AATKAL THEAVI-Tamil for: Need people for job)Car Driver (Rs 7000)Electrician (Rs 4000)Diesel Mechanic (Rs 6000)Motor Rewinder (Rs 4500)Was just analyzing the salary for these jobs and was surprised to see that a driver commands highest salary in the segment. An electrician’s job requires higher academic qualification, though drivers’ job is more challenging in terms of traffic he has to negotiate, odd timings he may have to work etc. There’s no academic eligibility for Drivers’ job, except a driving license, for other jobs at least a diploma or ITI course in electrical or mechanical field will be expected. So ideally these p

Vodafone tookover Airtel? Real Facts here!
2007-10-10 11:07:00
Of late, there's been an email circulating which asks you to login to www.airtel.com and as Vodafone logo and details appear on the site, gives you an impression that Vodafone has taken over airtel. Below is real facts behind the story, provided by Anurag Setia. (He doesn't have a blog on internet hence i'm not giving link and publishing his report here with permission)- ShrinidhiActual write up starts...I got atleast 10 people showing me the site www.airtel.com and laughing off how Vodafone has taken over Airtel site.... and I pity everyone who's thinking something like this without understanding what actually is behind all this.First the domain name airtel.com doesnt belong to Bharti Tele Ventures Ltd, the Airtel service provider that we know in India. They have their site up at www.airtel.in or at www.airtelworld.com Second, if your organization's name is India, doesnt imply that you would surely get www.india.com domain available.. if its taken u might try and negotiate to buy

Ganesha festival aftermath-photos of destruction
2007-10-07 05:09:00
I spotted a huge Ganesha idol being taken out from Hussain Sagar lake in Hyderabad last Sunday. Apparently it was immersed in the lake after Ganesha Chaturthy festival and what you see below is aftermath of the festival. The idol was really huge, made from plaster of paris with steel reinforcement. The idol which was worshipped by hundreds of people for 7 odd days was being brutally destroyed by works who wanted to gain some scrap value out of it and clean the mess.At first, what came to my mind was why can’t we reuse this component (Ganesha idol)? (IT influence you see!) I.e. why are we creating this idol every year, dispose them off few days later and re create from scratch again next year? After the festival why cant we preserve the idol and use it again next year? Will the annual maintenance expense (of preserving this idol for one year) be more expensive than new idol? I’m not sure. But on second thought, I realized that such a practice (of reusing the idol) would defeat the v

Recent Trends in displaying ID Cards-eNidhi India research Article!
2007-10-18 06:59:00
All employees have got company issued employee identity cards. This card is the reason why we’re allowed inside the office gate…This card allows you enter your workspace. This card makes the sales rep outside the gate stuff pamphlets in your hand as you walk in and out. This ID card helps you get a new phone connection, a personal loan or some corporate discount etc as it serves as your identity proof.Fine. So what?A recent study conducted by eNidhi India reveals that not everyone display their ID cards in same manner. Where they keep it, how they display it etc varies a lot. Here we’re presenting few trends in this regard:Type 1: Conventional dog collar Style: Attached to a strip hanging around the neckThis is the default style but out of fashion of late. ID card holder is attached to a strip and hung around the neck. While most of the associates let the ID card hang on their belly, few carefully shield them inside their breast pocket. As I said, this trend has become obsolete.

SEO-Writing for Search Engines vs Writing for Humans
2007-10-15 09:16:00
Second article in my SEO series, this post demonstrates how writing for humans and writing for search engines are different. [Read first part-SEO fundamentals](I'm no SEO expert. These are some simple observations only)Post TitlesWriting for humans: Readers can sense the excitement, criticism, pun, hidden meaning etc in a title, though the words do not convey it. But search engines read the word and store it and do not interpret other meanings/perspective of the phrase. For example, a title “What a bike Yaar!” might sound exciting and readers can understand that you’re likely to describe some new bike in that post. But for search engine, the title looks meaningless. Because, the keywords are missing in it. The words ‘what’ ‘bike’ ‘yaar’ are quite common and are not focused. On the other hand, a title “Bike review: New Bajaj pulsar 220 cc” will gain you better visibility on a search engine, because search engine can understand that your post will be quite relevant

A comment on 'Corporate' Movie

This post shares a small observation made on the movie ‘Corporate’ made by Madhur Bhandarkar and released sometime in 2006.Second and third paragraphs give some quick introduction to the movie those who have already seen this movie and want to skip into can skip intro and jump to 4th para here:Intro to Movie:‘Corporate’ is a Hindi Movie by Madhur Bhandarkar and stars Sameer Dattani, Bipasha Basu, Minissha, Kay Kay Menon, Payal Rohatgi, Raj Babbar, Harsh Chhaya, Rajat Kapoor, Javed Akhtar, Deepshikha etc. The story line revolves around 2 corporate houses which are archrivals in soft drinks and processed foods business. The movie tries to showcase how the politico business nexus works and how companies try to pull each others’ legs.Madhur Bhandarkars movies are always unique on their own. They are not based on a conventional bollywoord masala framework but are based on a strong storyline and are made after doing a great deal of research on the subject. Traffic Signal, Life in a
