For now, gold and silver jewellery studded with synthetic diamonds will be lighter on your pocket, thanks to the 5% reduction in customs duty on rough as well as cut and polished cubic zirconia.Zirconia, a synthetic diamond, is popularly known as American diamond.While FM has exempted rough zirconia, which used to attract 5% customs duty, he has brought down customs duty on cut and polished zirconia from 10% to 5%. Customs duty on rough coral, largely used in jewellery for religious purposes, has also been slashed from 10% to 5%.

DIAMOND Commissioner Kennedy Hamutenya has slammed alleged attempts by Malaysian businessman Subrmanian Ragubahti to discredit the Ministry of Mines and Energy, warning that the fight for control of the Skeleton Coast diamonds amounted to playing Russian roulette with Namibia 's international reputation for clean diamonds.In a strongly worded press release issued late last week, Hamutenya called on the Government to bring an end to the fight for control of the so-called Toscanini claim "...before it is too late because Toscanini has become a liability for our industry's reputation".

A Canadian mineral exploration firm, Mexivada Mining Corp, has reported the discovery of two large diamonds in its 100% controlled Malambani Permis de Recherche concession, located near Mayoko in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).Mexivada described the first stone as a white, modified octahedron 7.5 milimetres in diameter while the second stone was a shiny 6 milimetre greenish-white coloured dodecahedral diamond. Each of them weighs 0.1 gram.

Profits from Namibia's largest diamond mine drop by half

Net profits from Namibia 's largest diamond producer, Namdeb, a subsidiary of DeBeers, dipped almost by half last year despite slight increase in production, the company said on Friday."Net profits for the year 2007 came to 143 million Namibian dollars (18.4 million US dollars) compared to 305 million Namibian dollars (39.3 million US dollars) in 2006," Namdeb, jointly owned by the Namibian government and the DeBeers, said in a newspaper advertisement.Diamond production in 2007 was 2,176 carats, four percent up from 2,085 carats the previous year, with half of the diamonds found on land and from marine mining in the Atlantic Ocean.
