George Metellus' Team Of The Week
2008-03-05 10:55:49
I can't believe its March.  I mean I was just celebrating the New Year with a big booty, silicon chested lapdance at the local strip club.  You know, its spring or down here in Miami, a little hotter than January.  Whatever the case may be.  There is a team worthy of the TOW award for the calendar week of February 25 - March 2.  The winner is:Società Sportiva Calcio Napoli (ITA)The team better known as Napoli has been the center of much controversy in recent years from its glory years with the legendary Diego Maradona to its 2004 demotion to Serie C1 due its financial problems. Despite that, the southern Italian team has quickly ascended back to the Serie A.  This past Sunday, Sophia Loren's hometown team stunned Calcio Italiano by defeating the seemingly inv

Barca Exposed?
2008-03-03 17:44:45
Very much like the swordsman in Raiders of the Lost Arc who wielded his sword all over and threatened to attack, all it took was one shot from Indiana Jones to end that threat. This was a long time coming for the blaugrana.  If you look at numbers alone, Barcelona is one of the best defenses in La Liga.  In their recent run of good form where they won their last sixteen matches in all competitions, there was still one loose end.  Their defense was the one aspect of the game that kept their opponents alive and well.  Exhibit A-  Celtic's performance at home against the blaugrana where they only mustered up three shots on goal, but of those three two beat Victor Valdés.  In that match Barcelona dominated in possession 68-32.Exhibit B-  Valencia gave Barcel

Robinho For Player Of The Year
2008-03-03 17:06:27
Whether it's the English Premier League and the Argentine marketing machine would like people to believe that Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are locks for the FIFA World Player of the Year, I would like to be the first one to offer resistence from this preconceived notion. Yes, the Portuguese international has the fast track to the award as he will also have Euro 2008 as his exclusive stage there is one player that should have the title locked up by then.  Robinho will be the FIFA POY by the time the end of the season comes to a close.  His performance on Saturday was a great platform to run on, but it was more his absence that speaks volumes about his play.  His performance against Recreativo this weekend says a great deal as to how he changes the dynamic of any game no

Palermo Reaches Boca Milestone
2008-03-02 12:45:35
Palermo goal against Gimnasia La Plata.   For many in Argentina it seemed like a normal thing as El Loco did this so frequently in his illustrious career at La Boca. On Sunday this was part of the Argentine football status quo, but there was an element of history involved this time around.  Boca played a crazy first half in which they had their backs against the wall for the majority of the first half.  Jonatan Maidana was sent off in the 37th minute after a dangerous challenge.  That was part of the game that trudged along and saw Boca fight tooth and nail to stay alive, especially after they went a man down.  Still when they did, they had more talent on the pitch than the Triperos.  Fabián Vargas was key in the first half to give some offensive potenti

Goverment To Indemnify "El Loco"
2008-03-01 06:02:57
Former Colombian international goalkeeper René Higuita will receive US$17,344 from the Colombian government due to his illegal arrest and detainment back in 1993.  The decision was handed down today by the Colombian Constitutional Court which condemned the government's actions against the former Atlético Nacional goalkeeper.                     Before Makeover                     After MakeoverHiguita was then being accused of illegally mediating in kidnapping negotiations and was put in jail for six months without a trial.  This was the reason he was awarded with the equivalent of 70 minimum salary wages as we

Bewitched
2008-02-28 15:43:06
Peñarol seems to have its goal cursed. Nicolás Biglianti Fractured a finger in his left hand during practice today and will most likely miss a good portion of the season. Biglianti was the second goalkeeper so far this short season and he started in both matches so far. He replaced Damián Frascarelli who suffered a season-ending knee injury while the team travelled to Hong Kong for a preseason tournament. Now the Carboneros will have to go to thrid-string keeper Guillermo Reyes. This was a huge blow for Peñarol, who look to win their first title in four years and return to international play after a two-year absence. Reyes will make his debut against Juventud this coming weekend.

George Metellus' Team Of The week
2008-03-12 09:33:09
This week was choc full of action. All kinds of wildness ensued on the pitch and off.  I won't mention the off the field stuff cause well I don't like talking about negativity that's what politics are for.  Did you know that that THRILLER 25 is out in stores. DAMN!! MJ was DA BOMB back then and now his albums just bomb.  I still buy them though.  Now back to the Team Of The Week winners.  The team that won this week's award made headlines or played matches during the calendar week of Mar. 3 - 9.  The winner is:Fenerbahçe Spor Kulübü (TUR)The most successful team in Turkish Super Lig history is looking to make history in Europe and further establish Turkish teams at the European club level.  The team known as the Yellow Canaries have advanced to th

Soler Resigns
2008-03-12 08:42:36
Juan Soler presented his resignation to the Valencia brass today.  According to Marca,  the president will be announced in the upcoming hours and the names that are being mentioned constantly are Rafael Salom or Agustín Morera.   According to fans and  several people close to Los Ches, he ran the club to the ground literally.  He compared the "sacking" of players like Albelda, Cañizares, and Angulo.  What was worse was the fact that he was comparing the exclusion of such players to those at Real Madrid last season that felt the same thing but eventually came back to the squad and ended up winning the title.  The final nail in his coffin was sacking Quique Sánchez Flores and hiring Ronald Koeman immediately afterwards.  Now there is a great de

Bigotón To Unleash Fury
2008-03-11 15:40:52
We can officially call these next few weeks and months Luis Aragonés' swan song at the helm of the Spanish National Team. The Spanish media went bonkers after the announcement was made today that Real Madrid's beloved Vicente Del Bosque would finally be given his due as he was announced as the next head coach of La Furia. He signed a two-year contract that will take effect immediately after Euro 2008 and expires on July 29th after the World Cup. The search was on for a new coach after Aragonés stated that his tempestuous relationship with the fans and the Spanish media where he found himself in various personal and professional battles where he ended up on the losing side. The biggest fight he had was in recent months when he refused to call up Real Madrid captain Raúl even tho

High On Something...
2008-03-14 19:16:15
Sepp Blatter is the type of individual that has something on his mind and in his agenda and he will not let it drop.  In Friday's meetings he once again refused to reverse Bolivia's appeal to play their World Cup qualifying matches in the high altitude of La Paz.  What is so ridiculous is that this ruling will be established only for World Cup qualifiers.  So if any of La Paz's club teams compete in any international tournaments, then they can play their home matches in the altitude.   So players are only affected when they play for their national team?  Players only drop dead for their national team?   When did Blatter start caring for the football players' wellbeing?  For president Evo Morales and that country's football federation it was a hu
