River won big game against Lanús in Southern BA and is currently in the driver's seat for the Clausura title.  Estudiantes will most likely take the lead after the disciplinary committee makes a decision on the Racing match that was suspended.  Boca blew a grand opportunity to keep pace as they drew against Banfield at La Bombonera.  San Lorenzo blew out Tigre in the delta as Menseguez scored a hat-trick leaving the revelation of the year on the outside looking in as far as Copa LIbertadores is concerned.Racing fell deeper in the Promotion race, while Newell's came up big in the Rosario derby.  Friday  Vélez Sarsfield Coria (71´) 1-1 Racing Club Avalos (57´) San Martín SJ Pacheco (3´) Bravo (86´) 2-0 Huracán Saturday  Arsenal 0-0 Estudiantes

Roma look like they will be focusing on this front by the end of this coming week and their schedule favors them over the neroazzurri.  Inter will have to host Fiorentina and La Viola are fighting for a spot in the Champions League against AC Milan and Udinese.  Obviously their biggest obstacle to overcome will be the Derby della Madonnina in week 36. Week 36 will also be important for Roma as they will travel to Sampdoria.  Next week will be vital for the Giallorossi's pretensions and should make an important move prior to week 36 as they will face Udinese. Uruguayan Clausura- Week 7
2008-04-06 06:19:03
Left with 10 players late in the match, Peñarol were able to gut out an emotional win against Danubio at the Centenario in Montevideo.  Former Juventus super-sub Ruben Olivera scored his first goal with the Carbonero late in the second half equalizing after the eternal Carlos María Morales opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the opening minutes of the second half. Antonio Pacheco then scored the game-winner in injury time and lifted Peñarol to share the top spot along with the revelation side of the tournament River Plate. Carrasco's men will play against a tough Miramar Misiones side on the road, while Nacional will play cellar-dwellers Rampla Juniors who are coming off a huge win against Colonel Bolognesi in Copa Libertadores play midweek.

With six weeks left in La Liga, Real Madrid are still in first place amid their inconsistent play.   With Villarreal and Barcelona waiting in the wings, their lead could shrink.  Villarreal seem to have the upper hand since they do not have to play either the Merengues or Blaugrana.  Meanwhile the Barça and Madrid matchup in week 36 will most likely define the title.Real Madrid-66 pts.Week  Opponent   H/A  32 Murcia H 33 Racing A 34 Athletic H 35 Osasuna A  36 Barcelona H  37 Zaragoza A 38 Levante HVillarreal- 59 pts.Week  Opponent   H/A  31 Sevilla A  32  Almería  A  33 Valladolid

Juan Manuel Llop was confirmed, signed, sealed, and delivered in Avellaneda- then he might have realized what he got into.  Blanquiceleste boss Fernando De Tomaso announced that the press conference and presentation would be made a a local dance club. Racing are currently in the Promotion zone and have not won so far this tournament. They are currently in last place in the Clausura tournament and their schedule does not favor them. Porto Wrap Up Super Liga
2008-04-05 15:54:13
Porto became the first European team to wrap up their respective league after beating lowly Amadora by 6-0 on Saturday.  This is the fastest the Portuguese giants ever clinched a title on their home soil.  Yet among their success during their three-peat, a huge cloud looms. The Portuguese Football Federation as well as the league's disciplinary committee is investigating and the possibility of losing six points in either this season or the next due to allegations of official bribing back in 2003-04.   Guimaraes and Benfica are enthralled in a battle for the second direct spot for the UEFA Champions League.  They are being followed closely by Vitoria Setubal and Sporting Lisbon as they are all virtually assured spots for European cup play with five weeks left in the

There are Games... Then There Are Games Pt.1
2008-04-05 12:15:45
Round three o´clock my day changed from buying empanadas at the local store to having to make the trek to downtown Buenos Aires to get tickets for one of the most heated games so far in the Copa Libertadores.  The Boca Nation was furious and at the same time preoccupied after their team's loss in Santiago the week before.  Yet there were various other scenarios that emerged.  The obvious one was the Argentina-Chile rivalry that bring out the best- and worst- out of all the fans in attendance as well as the neighboring countries.  For me there was only one thing on my mind- I was going back to where I fell in love with my two true loves.   I was kind of rekindling that fire towards the sport that faded a bit living in the football tundra that Connecticut can b

Hugo Finds An Ally
2008-04-08 02:59:04
Diego Maradona's version of The Magical Mystery Tour made its stop in Aguascalientes and like always said what was on his mind.  At a press conference at the Necaxa sports complex, El Diego expressed his ¨disgust¨ over the way Hugo Sánchez was talked about and sacked by the Mexican Football Federation. ¨It's disgusting to see how they kick a dead horse.¨ ¨Those who do not try, don't win.  Hugo tried, but he didn't.  Still he should be given a chance,¨ said the former Barcelona star.  Yet in the same breath he recognized the fact that sometimes being a superstar player does not necessarily translate into being a great coach. Then he took the time to take a shot at someone.  ¨Hey, look at (Ricardo) Lavolpe.  He sucked as goalkeeper, but is an incredible coach,¨ said by the Nap

George Metellus' Team Of The Week
2008-04-07 18:56:10
What is going on everybody, Its DAAAAAAARKNESS!!!, DARKNESS IS SPREADING!!  I just finished watching the DVD of the Chappelle Show and that just popped in my head.  Sorry about last week not giving you a TOW but I took a quick break and now I'm back with a winner.  This time the TOW was suggested by one of my MAF comrades.  Naturally, I had to research to see if their were others more deserving and there were none so I had to take Juan's advice on this one.  This week's TOW made news and/or played matches during the calendar week of March 31 - April 6.Cardiff City Football Club (ENG)The team known as The Bluebirds stunned the footballing world by advancing to the FA Cup final.  On Sunday, Cardiff City took down fellow Championship side and past TOW

Chelsea Pillage Barça?
2008-04-07 17:42:22
According to Barcelona daily Sport, Chelsea contacted forward Thierry Henry and offered him a nice contract in order to return to England.  Not only do Chelsea seem proactive to bring him back to London by fattening his wallet, they are trying to see how they can tug at his heartstrings.  In addition to having trouble adapting to the game in Spain, Henry seems severely affected by his divorce early in the season.  According to people close to Henry, he misses his daughter Tea who lives in London with ex-wife Nicole Merry.  Henry on several occassions mentioned that his play is affected greatly by the absence of his daughter.   Henry would be an eventual replacement for either Didier Drogba or Nicolas Anelka as it is evident that one of them would not be coming back

De La Red Goes Home
2008-04-07 16:49:57
Rubén de la Red became one of the hottest names in Spanish football and his dream came true.   The Getafe midfielder will see Real Madrid buy him back and will go to the Merengue as of June 1st.  Madrid sold him to Getafe last August with an option to rebuy clause.  Madrid will pay €4.5 million.  De La Red's carpet ride continued this season as he was called up to international duty for the first time in his career.    For Madrid his is a viable option for Fernando Gago who ¨underperformed¨ so far ever since he arrived from La Boca in 2007 as well as Diarra's inconsistency.

Barça Fans Ask For Resignation
2008-04-07 03:09:23
Amid the poor result Sunday at the Nou Camp, Barcelona club members and fans showed their displeasure with president Joan Laporta.  In the dying minutes of thegame, fans became waving white towels symbolizing the members' request for Laporta to step down.   This act did not occur since 2003 and could symbolize the inevitable downfall of one of the most successful teams of the past few years.  Barcelona dominated Getafe, but Roberto Abbondanzieri and his best friends- the posts- exacerbated the situation for the culé faithful.  The scoreless draw was part of the reason for the fans' frustration.  They once again had a chance to get closer to Real Madrid, but for a fourth time this year failed to do so.  Prior to the game Laporta spoke to the various fan affili

Torres and Babel On The Way Out?
2008-04-18 05:19:42
Liverpool's recent success always found a way to be taken away quickly by conditions outside of their control.   Three yeras ago, their celebrations after winning in Istambul were cut short because their vacations were abbreviated after UEFA's ruling forced them to play every qualifying round leading up to the group stages as a means to defend their title.  Now their success in Europe is marred by the news released on Friday that the embattled Liverpool ownership group might consider selling both Ryan Babel and Fernando Torres if they cannot pay back £31.5 million (US$63 million) that they borrowed in order to buy the Spanish international.   In the process, Texas billionaire Tom Hicks and his cohorts were able to secure a £350 million loan in order to finance the construction of t

George Metellus' Team Of The Week
2008-04-15 09:18:53
Another great week of action and another team chosen.  Like Neo in the Matrix, this week will produce a "Chosen One"  although I have to admit this week was the toughest week ever to chose a team of the week.  There were many teams worthy of the award but it was close and if you measure tournaments especially international club tournaments on an equal level than it was even tougher but I managed to pick a team.  The TOW made headlines and/or played matches during the calendar week of April 7 - 13.  The winner is: FC Bayern München AG (GER)I have been waiting since the summer transfer season to give this award to Bayern Munich.  The moves Bayern made this past summer were the most intruiging and exciting and finally they earned their selection as the TOW.

Pinturicchio and Babystar Commiserate- By Scoring
2008-04-20 18:39:56
When we were kids and brussel sprouts were on the menu at home, your mouth would be wired shut- figuratively.  Regardless of how it would be dressed or how good everyone told you they were, no one could convince you.   At this point in my life, I could have some of George's "friends"  at Club Madonna feeding me and I would still say no.  I am not comparing Raúl and Alessandro Del Piero to brussel sprouts, but follow me here.  If you are starting a fantasy side, these two have to be at the top of anyone's list- unfortunately Roberto Donadoni and Luis Aragonés get paid to do it for Italy and Spain respectively.  Donadoni's situation is understandable, to a degree when you look at the players that he has and the spots that he has available for Euro 2008.&n
