Cold and Flu Season, BeGone! 2007-03-19 13:32:49 I hereby banish ye, Sir Cold and Flu Season
, from these parts for all eternity. Or at least until next year.
There is nothing I love more than warm weather (with the possible exception of my husband and my son, but you already knew that). On that same path, there is nothing I HATE more (and by hate I mean despise with every ounce of my mind and soul, hate with the fire of a thousand hells, aka, I really, REALLY don’t like) than a flash of warm weather followed by cold weather again, followed by warm weather, and so on. Now I’m not sure if Mother Nature is suffering from PMS during all this, (or possibly menopause, thus the hot flashes) but if so I’m all for buying her some of that new PMDD medicine that has every husband out there convinced that their wife will suddenly turn into a perfect little angel at least once a month. All these changes in weather tend to make me sick. And I mean that literally. Right now everything hurts. It even hurts to type, but luc Read more:BeGone

Walking? 2007-03-20 14:34:40 I need tips from you other toddler parents out there. Alex isn’t walking yet. Well, actually, according to his pediatrician, he’s “walking just fine, he just hasn’t remembered to let go yet.” Meaning he’ll walk anywhere as long as he has someone or something to hold on to. Now don’t get me wrong, I’ve never really been concerned about the “regular” milestones that most people are obsessed with. I’m a firm believer that Alex will develop at the pace he’s supposed to, and though I certainly do things to help him out (including playing, climbing at the park, reading, naming things, etc.), I am not the type that is going to push him into doing anything. His walking is no different. I don’t want to push him into it, because I honestly don’t need to, he’s already doing it. He uses push toys and goes all around the living room. I just need some ideas on how to get him so interested in something t Read more:Walking
Awesome Family Blogs 2007-03-21 14:57:03 So Alicia over at Parenting Sites 411 tagged me for this nifty blogroll idea, and after I woke up from my medically enduced haze (that’s cold medicine induced, nothing else), which is currently made necessary by the fact that I cannot, FOR THE LIFE OF ME, fall asleep without coughing and hacking for at least two hours every night. Anyway, after staring mutely at the screen for about an hour, I think I finally figured out how to keep this going! And don’t worry, it shouldn’t be hard at all for anyone who’s had a solid night’s sleep in the past week or so! So check out the great sites below, and tell them Parenting Toddlers sent ya!
Alex and I just love these sites!
Here are the rules:
1. Write a short paragraph at the beginning of your post and link back to the blog that put you on the list in the paragraph. This isn’t a suggestion. You need to break up the duplicate content string. Someone took the time to add you so the least you can do is give them Read more:Family

Toddler Translations 2007-03-23 13:58:00 Typical morning in the Remeta house:
“Good Morning Sunshine! Did you sleep good?”
“Da..ga.. bweea.” (which means “I was a little restless early on, but I dropped off pretty good after midnight.”)
“How are we feeling this morning?”
“A bwa. Goo loo, hey yay.” (which means “Actually, I could seriously use a clean diaper, think you could help a guy out Mom?”)
After a good change, lots of giggles and a couple good morning snuggles, we make our way into the kitchen.
“Let’s have some breakfast! Do we want eggs this morning or oatmeal?”
“Hee ma ma. Geya. La ya .. kee cat!” (which means “Sweet! I’m starved! Either is fine, as I can smear both on my head when you turn around. Love some apple juice too though …. hey cool, there’s the kitty cat!”) This last bit of course is accompanied with pointing, laughing, and a great increase in volume.

Sunday Sixteen 2007-03-26 00:49:13 The SundaySixteen
. Sixteen new and interesting things Alex has done this week, things I have learned this week, or fun filled facts involving whatever might be going on in our little corner of the world.
Diesel, get OFF my blanket!!
Sunday Sixteen
1) Alex has ANOTHER ear infection. At one point his temperature got up to 103.9. I’ll be posting on all the ways to bring a toddler’s fever down shortly. Trust me, at this point, I’ve tried them ALL.
2) Alex was kind enough to give Mommy his ear infection too. Even the same ear. At least he likes to share things.
3) It was 90 degrees in Greenville today! Thank you warm weather, I love you! Time to break out the sunscreen for the little man though.
4) We are however, finally healthy enough to start going back to playdates. Alex LOVES playdates, and Mommy is always a fan of getting to chat with other moms.
5) Alex seems to be entering a separation anxiety/fearful phase. He’s suddenly afraid of things like the
Night Waking 2007-03-26 16:23:24 First and foremost, we need to send a GREAT BIG HAPPY BIRTHDAY out to Alex’s Grams!! Happy Birthday Grams!
NIGHT WAKING
Last night, we were awake multiple times. Alex is still taking antibiotics, so I’m concerned that he’s got some residual ear pain from his ear infection that might be disrupting his sleep. He’s no longer running a fever, thank goodness, but the night waking continues. The strange thing is, most of the time I actually wonder if he’s awake or not! His eyes are still closed, but he cries incessantly until Nick or I pick him up and rock him. The rocking only takes five minutes or so, and he’s calmed back down and then can be laid back down in his crib. The frustrating part in all this is making sure that we’re not starting and/or reinforcing a bad habit. So you know me. I went looking for answers. When it comes to Alex’s welfare, I’m like badger in rooting out what information I need.
What I found suprised m Read more:Night
Doggie Rehab 2007-03-28 14:59:31 I’m going to have to put the dog in rehab. I’m afraid he really does have an addiction problem, and I simply don’t know how to help him at this point. Every time he sees it he just can’t resist. It’s like kryptonite. What is it? Diaper Cream. More specifically, Aquaphor. To date he has chewed up/eaten one big tub, and two medium size tubes of the stuff. It’s a wonder he hasn’t somehow greased his intestines to the point that the end result would shoot out of his rear like some sort of pitching machine. But so far, knock on wood, no projectile … well, you know.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with the animal dynamic in our house, let me explain how things work. First, there’s Miss Abby the lab. I call her Miss Abby because at her age, she’s entitled to a little respect. She’s sweet, laid back, gentle, and all around the best dog ever. Abby is very accepting of Alex, and very good about simpy lea Read more:Doggie

Pinks & Blues Blog 2007-03-27 15:03:31 Not to gloat but ….
I WON, I WON, I WON, I WON, I WON!! *Doing the happy dance around the living room*. I am so excited because I actually won a Guest Blogger Contest over at Pinks
& Blues
Blog. The topic for this contest was What Makes You Lucky, and since you come here because you obviously LOOOVE my ever sarcastic wit, hop on over to Pinks & Blues Blog and check it out!! Plus you can find out more about their ongoing Guest Blogger contests and maybe win one yourself!! Did I mention that I get a Gap gift certificate in addition to the added “net exposure” for winning? The certificate will come in very handy, as Alex’s skinny little butt is in desperate need of some of the Gap’s neat adjustable pants for little ones (they button inside the waistband to fit skinnier guys and gals like Alex), and I just HAPPEN to have a Gap in my local mall, how convenient is that?
Also wanted to share this adorable picture with you of Alex’s frien
Toddler Fevers 2007-03-29 16:35:33 Toddler fevers scare me half to death. As most of you know by now, my son Alex has been struggling these past few months with repeated fevers and ear infections. Over this wonderfully long and tedious cold and flu season, I’ve figured out some simple ways to bring his fever down. Now obviously, I’m not a doctor, and these ideas shouldn’t be taken as medical advice. They are simply what’s worked for Alex along the way. I have confirmed all these suggestions as okay through my pediatrician (and some of them he suggested), but it might not hurt to run them by your doctor as well.
Here’s what worked for us:
1) Light clothing. I have gone all the way down to just letting Alex wear only his diaper before as well, though if the fever is that bad I always cover him with a light blanket to prevent chills.
2) Cool cloth. If Alex will tolerate it, I use a cool washrag on his forehead. His “baby sized” washcloths work well for this. The key is not
American Idol 2007-03-30 13:58:35 I promised myself I would never watch American
Idol. I swore that I would not become part of the addicted masses that forego necesseties like going to the bathroom for the entire hour this show is on. And I did really well for a couple of years before I made my first big mistake. I stopped switching channels for a couple seconds too long. A couple seconds turned into minutes, which turned into hours, and occasionally even two or three hours as American Idol
is apparently the prime time TV dictator, and can play as many times a week as it wants, for as long as it wants. It’s worse than a presidental address for clogging up tv time.
In any case, I’ve been watching for basically the last two seasons religiously. Last season I watched because Chris Daughtry could straight belt it, and he was simply awesome to watch. I now have his CD, and I STILL think he should have won last year. I think the fact that he has the number one album in America right now only serves to d
Sunday Sixteen 2007-04-01 15:22:51
This week’s SundaySixteen
:
1) This weeks big news, Alex is allergic to Amoxicillin. We know this because he broke out in horrendous hives all over his body and required a visit to the pediatrician AND the allergist, all in one day.
2) I desperately need to buy more Aquaphor. Preferably in a dog proof tube.
3) Alex started waving “hi” this week. He also usually says something sounding like “hey” or “hi”. It’s so cute!
4) I won a Guest Blogger contest over at Pinks & Blues Blog AND I won a gift certificate. Pinks and Blues are looking for other guest bloggers, so visit their site and give them some literary love.
5) Alex’s favorite foods this week: strawberries, sliced american cheese, yogurt, and feta chicken.
6) Mommy and Daddy have been much better about establishing a “read to Alex before bedtime” routine. Great for Alex’s vocabulary, and it’s a nice chance for some quiet family time too.
7) A
Easter Picnic 2007-03-31 21:43:07 What fun! Today we attended a get together picnic and easter egg hunt with other members of the Greenville Moms Group. Alex met tons of new friends, and had an absolute blast. He didn’t get much out the whole easter egg hunt idea, but I didn’t really expect him to at this age. Next year though, those easter eggs better watch out!!
This go round, Alex was much more interested in eating every rock, stick, and blade of grass he could find at the park. And trust me, there were plenty to go around. I am so mad our camera is broken, because he was absolutely filthy and absolutely adorable at the same time! This was easily the dirtiest he’s been to date, so much so that as soon as we got home we went straight for the bathtub.

Elephant Manicures 2007-04-02 15:08:30 Did you know elephant’s get manicure’s? They also eat a full watermelon in a single bite or two. These are the vitally important things I have learned so far this morning, and all I had to do was tune into the Sprout network and watch Caillou. So watching shows generated towards Alex’s age group is indirectly making me smarter. I’m not sure if that’s suppose to make me feel good for learning, or bad for realizing that I’m learning from a show geared toward 2 year olds. I guess at my age you take any new learning you can get!
I’m also learning from the books we read to Alex just before bed. Lately it’s more Clifford books, since Alex is a Clifford fan (with a dog like Diesel, is anyone really suprised?), and while they aren’t teaching me tangible things, they are teaching me what Alex responds to and what he doesn’t. He enjoys the reading time, but he’s not crazy about long books that drag on. Understandably, as
Pacifier Separation - A Major Trauma of Toddlerhood 2007-04-03 17:56:10 Some people love them. Some people hate them. Most are floating around somewhere in between. As for my family, we are familiar with all the arguments for and against. In our situation, and especially with Alex needing extra comfort during his hospitilizations, we decided to use one. Who are we kidding, when he was in the hospital I could have seriously used one. At his age now though, I am trying to begin weaning him off it, especially since lately he seems more inclined to look for it, or carry it around with him. Now the big issue is how to actually accomplish the separation itself. I scrounged around and hit up some friends for ideas on what worked for them. I also waded through the piles and PILES of tips across the internet on this topic.
So if you’re looking for a way to make the break as cleanly and painlessly as possible, try some of these tips:
1. It’s broken. My friends John and Robin gave me this idea. When their son was smaller and not wanting to gi Read more:Pacifier

My apologies 2007-04-06 17:14:14 First, I must apologize to you, my loyal readers. I have not updated the site in a few days, which is, as I am well aware, tantamount to blog suicide sometimes. I hope most of you will bear with me and keep coming back however as I promise I have a very good reason for my absence. My little angel has had another asthma episode, preceeded by a not so enjoyable batch of full-body hives.
I have to be honest here, because, well, it’s much easier to be honest when I’m not looking anyone in the face. I’ve always been afraid of becoming “that parent”. The one who is absolutely paranoid about every little sniffle and scraped knee to the point that their child suffers for it. In my defense, with the hospital stay and scare we had very, VERY early on, it is almost to be expected. But I haven’t been. At least, not too often.
Now, after this latest episode, I’ve decided I’m GOING to be that parent. At least THAT PARENT gets some attentio
Fiesta Turkey Soup 2007-04-09 14:07:50 This is a favorite around our house, and super easy to make, so I thought I’d share it with everyone.
FiestaTurkey
Soup
1 medium onion, diced
1 teaspoon vegetable oil
1 garlic clove, minced
3 cups chopped, cooked turkey or chicken (I use ground turkey in most cases and it works great)
1 (15 oz) can chili beans
3.5 cups chicken or turkey broth
1 (11 oz) can whole corn with red and green peppers, drained
1 (10 oz) can diced tomatoes and green chiles
1/2 teaspoon of chili powder
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
salt & pepper to taste
Toppings: sour cream, shredded Mexican cheese blend
Alex says enjoy!
Saute onion in hot oil over medium heat (and wear sunglasses, because that onion always makes me cry!) 7 minutes or until tender. Add garlic, and saute 1 minute. Stir in turkey and next 8 ingredients (told you it was easy, you basically dump it all in and cook!). Bring to a boil, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat and simmer 15 minutes. Serve with desired toppings.

HAPPY EASTER! 2007-04-08 16:29:10 Happy Easter to everyone! You’re just in time for this week’s Sunday Sixteen.
1. We visited Grams and Poppy this week. Daddy had to stay home and work, and he still cleaned the whole house for us by the time we got home. Mommy is a big Daddy fan right about now.
2. Unfortunately, we had another asthma attack this past week. We had to do 4 treatments over the course of an hour and a half just to get Alex to where he could breath without grunting in exertion. Luckily we had a prescription for Orapred on hand and saved ourselves a trip to the hospital. I highly recommend keeping a written prescription on hand should your little ones need any regular medication, and DEFINITELY if they have asthma.
3. The hitting phase continues. Some of it is frustration from being sick, but the hitting has got to stop. How did you all deal with the hitting?
4. Favorite toddler foods this week: Stouffer’s Five Cheese lasagna, cubed fresh pears, club crackers, and easter ham
Will Dannielynn Survive? 2007-04-11 14:29:46 Anna Nicole Smith’s daughter may currently be in more danger than anyone realizes. Howard Stern, her assumed father up until yesterday’s DNA tests, was the picture of fatherly love in every television, radio, and court appearance (and trust me, there were plenty) for the past months. Yesterday, it was discovered that Anna’s former bodyguard, Larry Birkhead, is actually the biological father of of Dannielynn
. It’s a very real possibility that custody of Dannielynn will be given to Mr. Birkhead, especially since he never signed away any parental rights (at last update per my local news, it looks like Stern will not contest custody and Dannielynn will be turned over to Birkhead). In my opinion, this will only serve to make Dannielynn’s very existence a precarious one. Again, in my opinion, Stern has been simply biding his time these past years, doing away with family members one by one so he coud legitametly get his hands on all Smith’s money. You
Dancing Toddlers 2007-04-10 15:33:28 Does your toddler dance? Alex has just recently picked it up from dancing with his Grams in Myrtle Beach. Now anytime he hears music at home he stomps his feet and bobs his head back and forth. It’s too adorable.
If you haven’t shown your toddler how to dance just yet, I highly recommend it. It’s great exercise, and great fun for both of you. The Noggin channel is great for finding musical shows, and they often put in toddler to preschooler geared music videos between their regular programming. To find out more about Noggin and a great DVD of kid’s music, visit Deanna over at TVTotWatch.
A great way to enjoy music with your little one is to do a “Freeze” dance. As the music plays, your little one dances for all they are worth. When the music stops (because sneaky mom or dad hit the stop button), their job is to freeze exactly where they are. This generally ends up with some occasional incidents of toppling over, which brings on gales of lau Read more:Dancing

Real Moms 2007-04-12 14:45:32 My friend Leslie over at My Mommy’s Place tagged me for this neat meme about Real Moms
. So here are my thoughts on the subject:
REAL MOMS TRUST THEIR INSTINCTS
This one is simple. Anyone who’s read this blog knows that I have been in and out and around and around with various doctor’s over my son’s health. I am constantly battling against people who want to pooh-pooh my concerns off as overprotective first time mom syndrome. Yet my previously happy, healthy, infection free child has now been sick in some shape or form for the past six months. So I continue in my quest to determine just what exactly is going on. Real moms know their child better than anyone. Real moms know the difference between picking up a bug and feeling like crap for months on end. Real moms stay up late researching anything that could possibly explain the sudden change. Real moms go toe to toe with medical professionals and make sure they HEAR what is being said. Real moms don&rsqu
Must Have Bath Toys 2007-04-12 13:54:26 Have you seen the amazing amount of bathtoys available for toddlers these days? Where were these when I was growing up? I’m so jealous.
Here’s a list of the top three Alex and I have found so far:
1) Rub a Dub ABC and 123 from Growing Tree Toys. These are super fun AND help teach letter and number recognition from an early age.
2) Rub a Dub Paint in the Tub also from Growing Tree Toys. This is a must have for any budding Michaelangelo. The “paint” is actually colored soap, so your budding artist will not only be expanding their creative talent, they’ll be cleaning along the way!
and finally,
3) Tub Tunes Water Drums by Growing Tree Toys. This is such a neat idea! Your mini rock star can bang away in the bathtub, and even change the sound the drums make by adding or emptying out water within the drums. I think I’m getting a set of these just for myself.

32 Dead In Virginia Tech Shooting 2007-04-16 22:34:47 32 people are dead in a massive shooting at Virginia
Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia. Early reports disclose the possibility of semi-automatic weapons, a shooter possibly heart broken over an ended relationship, maybe even more than one shooter involved. I don’t know what’s fact right now and what’s not. What I do know is that I have so many different feelings running in so many different directions right now I don’t know what to do about them. My heart is bleeding. I attended Virginia Tech
. I know the buildings and the dormitories, the drill field and the coliseum as if I lived there still. I lived, freshman year, in West AJ Hall. I have a family member that is a part of the massive police force that is currently working to make sure the campus is secure. Today’s tragedy is absolutely tearing me apart.
Aside from the proximity of this tragedy to my personal life, it scares me to death. What is wrong with these people? Honestly, I don’t car
Outraged Parents 2007-04-16 16:34:35 It seems that my recent post on Pacifier Separation has lit a fire under a select few parents out there. Now before everyone get’s their underwear in a twist, let me specify one thing.
Parenting is confusing business. There is always more to be learned, more experiences to be had. And EVERY SINGLE CHILD IS DIFFERENT.
This is where I think some parents make mistakes (and I’m not placing blame, I’ve done it myself). Everything I put on this website is mere suggestion. It’s relaying to other parents what has worked for me, and what hasn’t. It is explaining to people how ALEX responds to things. I am not Dr. Spock (did he even HAVE kids?), I am not a child psychologist. I am a mother. Pure and simple. And because I know that my child is an individual, I do not pass judgement on those who choose to do things differently than I do. We all must raise our children based on our own beliefs and ideas of what will work. If we were to meet sometime in t Read more:Parents
Updated List of Virginia Tech Victims 2007-04-17 21:26:06 (updated April 18,2007)
Below is the latest updated list of the victims from Monday’s mass shooting on the Virginia
Tech Campus, according to MSNBC.
The victims range in age from 18 all the way up to 76.
As much as I try to continue with my normal daily activities, I cannot get the victim’s of yesterday’s shooting out of my mind. As a parent, all I can think of is that those kids (and those adults for that matter) were someone’s “baby” at one time. They were toddlers just like Alex who got into trouble and laughed hysterically at the most random things. They brought joy to their parents hearts on a daily basis. And now?
Now they’re gone.
The world is not a fair place.
And because I cannot imagine the pain those parents must currently be going through, I am doing the only thing I CAN do to pay tribute. I am getting their names out there. I am making sure every one of us remembers these names for a long, long time. It is the very, V Read more:Virginia Tech

At last check I was on page four, but I’m sure, with your loyal help and wonderful assistance, I can make it up a couple of pages. As for me today, I think I’ll spend my time praying for those who were killed at Virginia Tech yesterday, praying for my own family members who live in Blacksburg, and praying that we can somehow figure out a way to truly keep our children safe from gun toting crazies.

Virginia Tech Tributes 2007-04-19 15:06:00 “We will continue to invent the future through our blood and tears and through all our sadness … We are the Hokies … ”
– Nikki Giovanni, University Distinguished Professor, poet, activist
We are the Hokies
We are the Hokies
We who have graced your hallowed halls
Bleed now through our endless tears of grief
We are the Hokies
Our hearts laid raw by this senseless act
Our minds enraged
We are the Hokies
We have stumbled under the weight of this great tragedy
But we stand as one once again
We are the Hokies
Proud and tall and always united
Ever mindful of the precious lives we have lost
We are the Hokies
And we will never forget.

Thoughts from a Virginia Tech Alum 2007-04-20 14:00:11 Okay, so I’m not technically an alum. I never graduated from Tech. But I did attend Virginia
Tech for three years and it has been in my blood for decades. I’ve screamed and cheered in Lane Stadium. I’ve slipped and slid across the drill field on chilly, snow covered mornings. I’ve played pool and chowed down at the Hokie House. Virginia Tech
is a second home to me. And someone has come into my house, MY HOUSE, and mowed down my brother’s and sister’s in cold blood. They have used this historical, beautiful campus as a backdrop for gut curdling evil.
So many people, friends and strangers alike, keep asking me how I feel. “Didn’t you go to Tech?” “I see you have a Tech license plate.” “So you went to Tech huh?” all of these are paired with pitying, half hearted smiles of attempted comfort.
I don’t want comfort.
I want justice.
I want the person who did this to still be alive. I want him t

Sunday Sixteen 2007-04-22 14:31:00 Sunday is here again already? Where did the week go? Geez, it’ll be Christmas before I catch up. I don’t need to tell you that we had a rough week around here. But the healing process is slowly starting, and it’s time to get back to at least pretending to go through the motions. So in keeping with tradition, here is the Sunday Sixteen
!
1. We’re making progress on the “no throwing food” idea. Alex seems to have settled down in that regard, which just might save some unsuspecting soul sitting behind us in a restaurant from getting a headful of pasta in the near future.
2. Alex had his 15 month shots this past week. 2 to be exact, and he took them like a trooper.
3. He also got his measurements checked. He is 30 and 3/4 inches and 21 pounds. An almost 1 inch increase from his last check, and exactly the same in the weight category (surprise, surprise).
4. Mommy got a new digital camera for her birthday, so that means lots of new and finall Read more:Sunday
