The Blizzard of 2008
2008-03-08 08:24:00
Looks like everything they predicted showed up, and more. I'm guessing at least about 10 inches of snow out right now as of 9:30 am and it seems the wind is picking up. At the rate it is coming down I wouldn't be surprised if we got 16-18 inches total.I couldn't get out even if I wanted to.

STORM OF WHITE DEATH ARRIVES!
2008-03-07 09:01:00
Well, it's here. They seem to be calling for up to a foot of snow by the time it ends Saturday.COOL, A BLIZZARD WARNING.

So I get this email
2008-03-06 16:47:00
at work this afternoon reminding me that even though the weather is expected to be bad tomorrow my presence is vital to the success of the company.I'll have to remind them of that next time I have a salary review.I probably shouldn't feel too special though. About 2000 other employees got the same email.

Winter's Last Blast?
2008-03-06 08:02:00
Looks like it is coming tomorrow. From 610WTVNThe National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch effective tomorrow morning through Saturday evening. Live Doppler 10 Meteorologist, Brandon Roux says 6 inches of snow, plus freezing rain and sleet could be seen out of this storm in Central Ohio. The ironic part of this is that this Sabbath is our annual (after a brief hiatus) Hawaiian Sabbath. I wonder if our brethren in Honolulu dress in boots and winter coats some Sabbath in July?

Is Barack Obama Ready to Crash and Burn?
2008-03-06 07:42:00
I wonder if Barack Obama has already reached his electoral zenith and faces a slow crash? Here’s my thinking: He didn’t get that election day bump this past Tuesday he has typically gotten, in fact the exit polls show he lost ground the last couple days prior to the primary. So why is that? A couple ideas. First Hillary Clinton hit themes better suited to her.Secondly her commercials changed. Her initial Ohio commercials had clips of her talking and speech making. Quite frankly the more often people listen to her the more annoying she is. In many of her latter commercials here her voice wasn’t even heard until the approved by disclaimer at the end. Also Barack’s campaign got off message. The first thing he needs to do is get his wife, Michelle Obama, off the angry American tour and s

Food Fight
2008-03-05 06:06:00
So Hillary lives to fight another day. To tell the truth I’m glad to see the intraparty food fight continue as the dems get a little of their own medicine.Apparently Barack Obama not liking how the voting was turning out in Ohio reached back into his Kenyan heritage (recall the recent electoral and national chaos there over a disputed election) in an attempt to rig an election by finding a friendly judge who agreed to keep the polls open longer, for really no good reason, in certain precincts that would be expected to vote heavily for Barack Hussein Obama. Hillary Clinton was also complaining about the Texan system of a primary and a caucus. In their attempt to be all things to all people the Democratic Party has created a system that instead of drawing a party together will end up balkan

Whoa dude, what a trip!
2008-03-05 05:39:00
Here’s an unusual take on the biblical exodus account.High on Mount Sinai, Moses was on psychedelic drugs when he heard God deliver the Ten Commandments, an Israeli researcher claimed in a study published this week. That would explain the glazed look Moses has for the rest of the movie after seeing the burning bush in the 10 Commandments. It seems though the “researcher”, Benny Shanon, may be letting his own experiences lead to this bizarre conclusion.Moses was probably also on drugs when he saw the "burning bush," suggested Shanon, who said he himself has dabbled with such substances. I'd say he's done a little more than dabble. He mentioned his own experience when he used ayahuasca, a powerful psychotropic plant, during a religious ceremony in Brazil's Amazon forest in 1991. "I experi

Brett Favre to Retire
2008-03-04 10:00:00
According to Sports IllustratedFOX Sports first reported Tuesday that the Green Bay Packers quarterback informed the team in the last few days. ESPN.com said that according to Favre 's agent the quarterback told coach Mike McCarthy of his decisionThus ends the career of one of the great quarterbacks in NFL history. Let the debates begin about where he ranks on the list.I remember the first time he played for the Packers after coming over from the Falcons. It was against the Bengals. Don Majkowski got hurt and Favre came off the bench to engineer a come from behind victory against the Bengals. You could see then he had the ability to be a special quarterback. He proved last year he could still play, silencing the doubters after a disastrous season the year before. It's good to see him go out

Politics on Primary Day
2008-03-04 08:19:00
The Wall Street Journal had an interesting editorial yesterday comparing the economic fortunes of Ohio and Texas. To sum it up it shows Texas as a state on the economic upswing with job growth while Ohio is economically circling the bowl and hemorrhaging jobs. They made the connection to various indicators of a state's friendly business environment such as regulations and tax rates. Texas ranked high. Ohio ranked low, with some of the highest personal and corporate rates in the country. Yet the prescriptions both Barack Hussein Obama and Hillary Clinton are selling in Ohio are more of the same. More government regulation. Higher corporate rates (so they can pay their "fair share").Of course current Ohio conditions have nothing to do with Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. They don't even ha

I'll be glad when tomorrow is over
2008-03-03 08:47:00
And I get a break from the Obama and Hillary commercials. My intuition is that Hillary Clinton may squeak out a win in Ohio. Weather may be a factor as forecasters are predicting foul weather throughout the state tomorrow .Still not too late for Hillary to take my suggestion of sponsoring keg parties tonight on college campuses around the state to suppress the youth vote.I suppose Obama could counter by sponsoring all you can eat buffets at MCL Cafeterias and TeeJayes across the state.

UCG Feast in Mt Pocono?
2008-03-03 08:38:00
That's what I hear. Last year the United Church of God used Lancaster PA for that part of the country but decided not to use it again this year. As had been mentioned in the United News, 3 sites in that general area were being considered as a Feast of Tabernacles site.I hear, but have no confirmation, that Mt Pocono is going to be the place.Update Tuesday March 4thAccording to the UCG festival website it is a done deal. Finally, we have gone to contract with the Fernwood Resort in Bushkill, PA in the Poconos Mountains. We had hoped to use a nice performing arts center near Bushkill, but the executive director resigned the week after we did a site inspection and there is question as to the future of the facility. It would have been great and it might remain a possibility for the future. At th

The Cleveland Browns Offseason
2008-03-03 08:37:00
It appears the Cleveland Browns have made some important off-season moves. They got a deal done with starting quarterback Derek Anderson for 3 years. Of course this raises questions about Brady Quinn’s future with the team but for a team on the cusp of the playoffs last year they absolutely had to get Anderson signed. After struggling at the quarterback position for years it would have been the height of folly to go into the year relying on Brady Quinn, regardless of his potential, after Anderson played so well for much of the year. I doubt both these guys will be with the team after next year. Odds are Quinn will get enough playing time this year for the Browns to make an evaluation. Anderson stayed healthy all year last year. Chances are he won’t this year. They also signed wide recei

A Picture Can Be Worth A Thousand Words
2008-02-29 06:21:00
Oh, what an unfortunate image that is. Drudge has this picture from a recent Hillary Clinton campaign stop at my old hometown of St. Clairsville Ohio. Their school nickname is the Red Devils, hence the devil behind Hillary.

Contrasts in Death
2008-02-28 06:47:00
The deaths of 2 people well known within their circles was reported yesterday. First of course was William F Buckley Jr. The lesser known, to all but those exposed to Pittsburgh Steeler football, was Steeler announcer Myron Cope. It's an interesting irony, these two dying at the same time. Myron Cope was in many ways the anti-Buckley with his mutilation of the English language and flamboyant style. As someone who grew up as a Browns fan in a rabid Steeler area there could be no other reaction than to despise the unabashedly pro Steeler Cope. It seemed according to him Terry Bradshaw could walk on water and Franco Harris could heal people with his shadow. What made Cope more maddening to Steeler haters was his unique high pitched squealing voice. It was like nails on a chalkboard to a Browns

Late to the party
2008-02-27 15:15:00
A couple weeks ago I was surfing the remote one evening and came across the CBS show Jericho. I've found myself hooked and have been watching it since. Better late than never I suppose.   I understand it may be on the chopping block again though.

Big Changes for the Cavaliers
2008-02-26 05:56:00
The Cleveland Cavaliers made a big trade last week and Sunday saw the initial returns on the investment. I watched the game, and though it was only against Memphis so we don't want to get too carried away, it seemed to have a positive impact. Delonte West gives the Cavs a true point guard who is a scoring threat. Ben Wallace seemed to open things up for the Big Z, allowing him to get more rebounds and have some more open looks with that 18 footer he is so good at. Strangely enough Ben Wallace could end up having an impact offensively. The Cavs seemed to do a good job getting him the ball while moving to the basket, the only place he is really effective. If they can do that then it could open the floor and get them some better looks elsewhere. They can always use another 3 point shooter and

Picture, Picture on the internet
2008-02-26 05:40:00
The picture of Barack Obama wearing the Kenyan garb while visiting there a couple years back has generated a certain amount of interest in some circles. There are plenty of reasons to believe Barack Hussein Obama is too sympathetic to Islam for our nation's good at this time. The picture is not one of them though. It's not unusual for politicians to get a photo shoot in native attire while visiting overseas. Even presidents have done so.The picture would be more disturbing if he was known to be wearing this kind of stuff while in the US.Picture s of a candidate can be a tricky thing. Michael Dukakis was done no favors by the picture of him wheeling around on a tank, looking about 5 sizes too small for it. Then there was the picture of John Kerry at NASA last election cycle which had him in a

Don Quixote for President
2008-02-24 08:29:00
I just get a news alert that Ralph Nader is running again. Why?The impact his 1% of the vote will have depends on who wins the democratic nomination. If Barack Obama ends up as the nominee Nader's impact will be minimal. Barack Hussein Obama will get the "change" vote. Why vote for a marginalized losing candidate who was yesterday's relatively ineffective change candidate when someone who has a real shot at winning is available? Of course there is some for whom even Obama is not change enough; those who would have us riding horses, a windmill in every yard, rainbow stew and free bubble-ubb for us all.Should Hillary Clinton get the nomination Nader could have a significant impact as he portrays her as the establishment candidate who has had a chance to make change and failed to do so. He co

Big Problems for John McCain?
2008-02-21 07:26:00
The political world will be abuzz with this story from the NY Times attempting to link presumptive republican nominee John McCain to both an improper romantic and improper business relationship with a lobbyist. It’s too early to come to any conclusion as to the merits of the story. I saw some last night blasting it as another Times hit piece on a republican. That it may be. It may be true. It may be both a hit piece (they apparently have been holding it since December) and true. Either way if it gains traction McCain has big problems. His perceived integrity and independence has been a cornerstone of his campaign. If that is impugned he doesn’t have much left. If this is found to be true I have to wonder if the Republican Party power structure has any options. Also, as I told my wife la

Important Court Ruling for Sabbath Keepers
2008-02-21 06:54:00
Somehow Bob Thiel missed some news that concerned a Living Church of God member which has implications for United Church of God members as well as all Sabbath keepers. There was a fairly important case decided in the 4th circuit regarding the rights of Sabbath keepers in the workplace. This decision could be viewed as a setback. From Jonathan TurleyDavid Wise, a worker at a Firestone facility in North Carolina, will be forced to chose between his faith and his job under an important ruling from the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. A member of the the Living Church of God, Wise is required to take a greater number of days off than most employees and sued when he was terminated for these practices as violative of his religious rights. The Court ruled against him and held that Firestone could

Obamination of Desolation
2008-02-20 06:36:00
It is beginning to appear that the fat lady is warming up in the back room as Hillary Clinton loses yet again. She was expected to be competitive in Wisconsin and that didn't happen as Barack Obama won by 17. Of course he also won Hawaii as expected.A phrase we are going to hear a lot of for the next two weeks; the Alamo. In two weeks are the Texas and Ohio primaries, which are the Alamo for Hillary, her last stand. She pretty much has to sweep those to have a chance at unseating Barack Hussein Obama. Last I saw the Texas polls had the two of them neck and neck. That's not good news for Hillary since he is going to gain support as the rats jump a sinking ship and since the polls seem to be consistently underpolling his supporters. In Ohio Hillary still has a substantial lead but it is narr

Likely the next governor of New York
2008-03-11 15:30:00
David Paterson presently the Democratic Lt. Governor will likely be the governor within days. He sounds like a remarkable individual.Paterson, the 53-year-old Democrat, legally blind career politician from Harlem is well respected by Republicans and Democrats. Former New York City Mayor Edward Koch recently called Paterson "very capable, not withstanding his near sightlessness. It's never impeded his public actions or his personal actions and he's really overcome it in an extraordinary way." Paterson's disability has been a non-issue in Albany for more than 20 years as he has memorized lengthy, impassioned speeches without missing a mark. He would end up being the first black governor of New York as well as the first legally blind governor in the nation.Yet another example of a person who

Barack Obama Turns Tables on Hillary
2008-03-11 07:53:00
Barack Obama deftly turns the tables on Hillary Clinton by asking if he's too inexperienced to be president why would she talk about him being on the ticket as vice president. It's the perfect retort along with the fact Hillary is getting ahead of herself and still is trying to portray herself as the presumptive nominee even though she is behind in the delegate count and virtually unable to overcome the difference within the rules.Of course Barack Obama can't get to where he needs to be also. You have to wonder how this game of chicken is going to end.Short of Barack being client number 10 he's not going away silently and neither will his followers (I use followers rather than supporters because parts of his campaign seem to have taken on a cult like mentality).

FOX and CNN are reporting that New York governor Eliot Spitzer is admitting involvement in a prostitution ring. That's generally a career killer, unless maybe you are in congress.I'm sure it won't take long for the details to surface. There will be few people coming to his defense as he has managed to offend people and make enemies in both political parties with his alleged vindictiveness and strong arm tactics as governor and attorney general. I venture to say there a lot of people walking around with grins on their faces over this hoping to give him a shove over the political cliff.

Throwing good money after bad
2008-03-10 12:34:00
I see where the company that was supposed to purchase my employer lost $170,000,000 the last quarter of 2007 due to the bottom falling out of the credit market. Supposedly both parties are still working on closing the deal of which the only beneficiaries now would clearly be our corporate big shots who would make a lot of money off the stock buyouts and future employment buyouts. From our company's business perspective the deal would make no sense as the only purpose would be for the buyer to strip the company of assets in order to try to stay afloat.I told people here when the deal tanked that it was a good thing it did based on recent developments.

Lost in the weather coverage
2008-03-09 11:47:00
I manage to get out to do some grocery shopping today. Once you get to the main roads it is not too bad. I noticed though, lost in the orgy of weather coverage was the fact that gasoline prices have been jacked up to an average of about $3.29 a gallon. I know prices were inevitably headed up but you don't think retailers would have purposefully chosen to do it on a weekend when all the news would be focused on something else? Na, of course not. I'm just being cynical.
