The humor of yoga
2008-04-23 16:38:44
Third ... trimester ... wearing ... me ... down.Thank goodness this is my last week of teaching yoga! I'm sure I will miss it, but girlfriend needs a break!Since I'm so tired, thought I'd make this short and sweet and share this funny clip from The Jimmy Kimmel show I found on YouTube. He sent his security staff to a yoga class - hilarious!

Thankful Thursday - my yoga students
2008-04-24 12:33:27
My Thursday post is dedicated to expressing or communicating the importance of gratitude in life. Yesterday was my final time teaching my power yoga class before maternity leave begins. (I am teaching on Saturday though, just in case any students are reading!)I must admit to being relieved this commitment is winding down since I am so HUGE and run down, but I didn't realize how bitter sweet it would feel. For about a year and a half, I've been teaching at the YMCA and have created friendships and a sense of community within my classes. Several people attend regularly, and I've been fortunate enough to get to know glimpses at a time of many of them.My Wednesday night class can be hit or miss with attendees, but last night it was full to the brim, I guess because they knew it was my last one

Hometown baby shower photos
2008-04-27 13:52:13
Photos from hometown baby shower:Earlier this month, long-time friends Shannan and Christine threw me a beautiful, baby shower. It was so much fun (yes, baby showers can actually be fun!) and wonderful to see everybody. Everyone was extremely generous, and I came back home feeling so much more ready and prepared for the baby. Thank you to all for attending! It was a great time.My friend and baby shower cohost Christine and her baby Ellie. From left to right, my mom's good friends Kathleen and Barb, plus long-time family friend Trudy. My mom and I on the left and below, ,my mom and I again plus my friend and cohost Shannan and her mom Nancy.Me holding up a blanket my friend Christine's mom Sue, pictured below with her grand baby Ellie, made for the baby and the cake.

Nesting, but maybe in the wrong place!
2008-04-30 07:40:47
So I've slacked a little bit with the blog. I hope none of you are worried about me - probably knew I was away! LOL! All is well - approaching the 37th of week of pregnancy so I'm tired and big and just slacking in general. Actually that's not true... I think I've been nesting; not so much for the baby but wanting the house in order. On Sunday, I got a wild hair that I HAD to decorate our backyard, screened-in porch before baby. It basically was a lost, grungy hole attached to the back.A few weeks ago, we went to World Market for a living room rug to make our wood floors softer for laying down "Ducky", and it had a ton of cool outdoor stuff. When we moved into our house last summer, my mother-in-law had given us white, wicker chairs that needed a fresh coat of paint (especially after we let

Packing the hospital bag for delivery
2008-05-02 00:13:02
Today marks the beginning of my 37th week of pregnancy; I'm getting more eager and anxious for the baby's arrival. I began packing my bag to take to the hospital a few weeks ago, but I still keep taking items in and out of it. I just can't decide what to bring!Found this great article from a Pampers ParentPages e-mail called "Packing for Your Birth Experience" and thought other expecting moms would appreciate it. Includes a great list of items to pack not only for mom, but for hubby or birth coach, and baby. Here's some things to pack you might not have thought to bring:Chapstick and/or lollipops - with all the breathing, apparently dry mouth/lips are an annoyance that can be avoided for the laboring mama with these items.Snacks for your hubby or partnerBack massagerSome kind of focal poin

Thank you family and friends!
2008-05-01 10:56:57
I can't believe it's May and just 24 days (give or take) to go until baby!! OMG...Surprisingly, I'm feeling more and more comfortable with the idea of being a mother. I've never been a kid person and have only changed about two or three diapers in my lifetime, but it's not rocket science, right? I have faith that my hubby and I will be able to manage, especially since we have such supportive family and friends - hint, hint! ;)So today is Thursday and it's my blog day to give thanks! I wanted to thank my mother-in-law, sister-in-law and pal Lindsey for an amazing baby shower this past weekend. And thank you to all our family and friends who attended and were so generous. It was a wonderful time just seeing everyone and celebrating the upcoming birth of our little one!I've included some phot

Laboring positions
2008-05-03 07:57:01
A few Saturdays ago, hubby and I attended an all-day childbirth prep class. Even though it was tough to sit in a classroom half the weekend, I think it was definitely worth it for the information and better than having four of our evenings eaten up.One portion of the class I really liked was going over the various laboring positions - I think it made it more "normal" to my husband. I had tried to talk to him about them before and he looked at me like I was crazy! Now we're taking the teacher's advice and trying a laboring position or two a day from a one sheeter we were given and see which ones seem most comfortable for both of us. Here's our favorites so far:Slow danceSquat with partnerLeaning on sitting partnerTable (mother-to-be is on hands and knees) - can flow from cat to cow or dog

Meditation for pregnant mamas
2008-05-05 07:15:01
I added the DVD Yoga for Your Pregnancy to my Netflix queue and hope it will arrive early this week - love me some Netflix. I should really try to get the company to sponsor my blog. HA!Since it's meditation Monday, thought this was a good topic to post about because according to the DVD's Web site, it includes a segment specifically focused on medititation during pregnancy. It also contains three pranayama or breathing techniques for calming the nervous system and yoga postures to try during labor. I believe I saw this DVD before but didn't realize all the cool stuff it contained. Wish I would've read the review earlier, but better late than never, right? If anyone has tried to this DVD before, let me know what you think. I'll definitely post more about it once I try it out.

Answers to top 10 pregnancy questions
2008-05-04 10:07:57
Stumbled upon an interesting article online called Pregnancy and Work Can Work. Even if you're not working during your pregnancy, it's worth reading because the article addresses the 10 most common questions about being preggers, according to the two doctors interviewed for the article:How do I fit in doctor visits? Is it safe to see the dentist? What can be done about morning sickness and fatigue? What can I do about insomnia? Can I still drink coffee? What should I eat? Can I still hit the gym?Can I travel? What if I get sick? How do I plan for delivery while still working? Definitely worth checking out if you're expecting or planning to be pregnant.I'm a little run down this week - either have a cold or allergies. I'm leaning towards the latter. Going to take some Claritin (approved by do

Weekly appointment with prelabor signs!
2008-05-06 12:15:31
I had my first, weekly midwife appointment yesterday and told the nurse I thought I may have had some slight contractions for a few hours last week. Because of this, she told me the midwife would probably want to do an internal exam.Once the midwife came into the room, she measured my belly, which was at 36 inches and listened to the heartbeat. It was in the 140s - lower than the baby's typical mid-150s but still normal. When she began feeling around for the baby, she said that she couldn't feel the head and wondered if the baby had dropped so she began the internal exam. Apparently the baby has dropped into my pelvis (also known as engaged or lightening). Lots of times, expectant mothers notice this occurrence because it takes so much pressure off of the lungs and other internal organs, a

The true guide of life
2008-05-07 15:44:20
"Parents often think that they are here to guide the little ones. When - in reality - the little ones come forth with clarity to guide you."~ Abraham-HicksRead this quote in my inbox the other day, and immediately knew I had to post it on my blog. WOW! How cool and true is this quote? What is this new little being going to teach me? Definitely has already taught me patience in waiting for him or her to arrive, let alone not knowing the gender. I'm so excited to see what me and my hubby will learn.

J. Crew's new yoga line
2008-05-10 10:56:38
J. Crew now has yoga clothes! So exciting... I haven't bought anything from J. Crew in so long because I don't have quite the disposable income I had when I was young, single and fancy free (I used to shop online all the time and receive all these packages at work! My coworkers always enjoyed watching me open up a new purchase.) Even though I don't buy it, I still love J. Crew's look - especially the yoga bag. A little pricey at $70, but it's a bag I could use all the time (justification) plus carry my yoga mat. Maybe it could even be a diaper bag - ha!Might be a good Mother's Day present for myself. :)

Happy Mother's Day
2008-05-11 21:51:05
Found a great overview article about prenatal yoga on YogaJournal.com called Yoga for Moms-to-be; thought it was fitting for Mother's Day.(Photo of me today at 38 weeks!)Not sure if this is technically my first Mother's Day or not, but I did receive some Mother's Day cards, which was nice. I also was able to check out the DVD Yoga for Your Pregnancy that I blogged about earlier this week. Received

Meditation Monday: Intuition
2008-05-12 18:06:03
Lately, I keep hearing and seeing the word "intuition" so my own intuition began to sense I was supposed to be tuning more into my own or developing it ... not sure which. This weekend I went to the library to pick up a book and began looking at the other works surrounding it. One was titled Divine Intuition by Lynn A. Robinson - I knew immediately I had to check it out. Read about half of it this

False alarm
2008-05-14 21:24:35
On Tuesday, I woke up in the middle of the night with very strong cramping. Reminded me of my worst premenstrual cramps ever multiplied by 10! They kept going and going and then would stop for an hour and start back up without seeming to stop. By about 7 a.m., I read one of my many pregnancy sheets from the doctor, and it recommended calling the doctor if contractions lasted longer than two minute

Thankful Thursday - thankful thoughts
2008-05-15 17:48:01
"One of the most sublime experiences we can ever have is to wake up feeling healthy after we have been sick."~ Rabbi Harold Kushner"Illness or pain is just an extension of negative emotion. When you are no longer feeling any resistance to it, it's a non-issue."~ Abraham HicksI received both of these quotes the same day in my inbox, which seemed a little bit like fate to me. One week to go
2008-05-18 17:49:18
Seven days ... 168 hours ... 4,032 minutes to go until the baby's estimated arrival, but who's counting???Okay, I am! I'm going nuts waiting for this kid to arrive. Especially after our false alarm last Tuesday. It became so much more apparent the baby could show up ANY time now, and I'm definitely ready for it. Perhaps not ready in the terms of I know how to do everything, but the fear of actuall

Meditate on yoga
2008-05-19 18:03:01
YogaJournal.com sends me "Daily Insight" e-mails. A few weeks ago, the week's focus was on meditation so I saved some to help guide me in writing my "Meditation Monday" posts. Especially with the birth imminent, I just can't seem to conjure up too many original thoughts so thank you YJ for some fresh ideas on the subject. In your next meditation practice, try to meditate on the word "yoga" or the d

Baby update
2008-05-20 07:39:00
My FINAL weekly midwife's appointment before my due date was yesterday. She now puts me at 2 cm dilated and 75 percent effaced.I'm hoping all this forward progress prior to labor means the baby will shoot right out... but not too fast. My mother's favorite story (or at least the one I remember hearing the most) about me as a baby is that I shot out like a cannon during delivery and consequently ha

Getting our dog ready for baby
2008-05-21 17:56:14
Four days and COUNTING LOUDLY. Can you hear me God? I've been reading my newborn-care baby books and articles and watching the DVDs so we're ready to go! I'm so anxious to meet this little guy or gal. I've been having a bit of cramping today, which I chalk up to Braxton Hicks contractions since they have been fairly random and not really painful as I imagine full-on labor contractions to be. It's

The waiting game
2008-05-23 10:59:18
This waiting game is completely ridiculous. I don't know how women throughout the ages survived it. Guess they didn't have sonograms giving them a due date that apparently only five percent of women actually hit.Can you believe that - only five percent of women give birth on their due date??? Why does the medical field dangle a date in front of an expectant mother that has such low odds??? GRRRR!!

Heading to the hospital
2008-05-26 13:11:12
I've been having contractions since Sunday but they were only 10-15 minutes apart and sporatic. This morning, they began again and we're much more intense and have been between 2 minutes to eight minutes. It's been about five hours since they first started and I just called the on-call doc. She said go to the hospital - I hope this is it! I don't want to be crying wolf again. So baby's may arrive on

Welcome to the world Brijin Joy
2008-05-31 00:28:26
I'm so sorry for keeping you all in suspense...We returned home from a family of two to three from hospital with our new, baby girl Brijin Joy Wednesday night and have been tending to her needs since. I finally feel like I have a moment where I will choose five minutes of blogging over five minutes of sleep... Amazing. She arrived at 9:04 p.m. on Memorial Day at a long and skinny 7.0 lbs and 20.5 i

Bringing Joy
2008-06-02 23:08:27
I really should hit the sack for the hour or two I have between Brijin's next feeding... but I couldn't resist sharing a little something tonight. My brother's wife was IMing with my hubby earlier and said my brother thought our new baby's name (Brijin Joy) sounded like "Bringing Joy."I started to cry when the hub shared this with me... that's exactly what I want this little girl to do, not only f

News alert - umbilical cord dropped and breastfeeding quandaries
2008-06-04 13:08:02
Brijin's umbilical cord dropped off! Yippee! Now I don't have to worry about getting that thing wet anymore. YAY! Plus it kind of grossed me out. She is now completely untethered and on her own! Well, in theory, that is. ;) As her grandma still says to me to this day - and I'm 30-years old - she'll always be my baby girl. I guess she can take a real bath now versus a sponge bath, but I'll check wi

Preeclampsia - who me?
2008-06-05 06:36:47
Yoga Mama and baby Brijin visited our respective doctors on Wednesday. Since going to the hospital to deliver, I had been having high blood pressure readings. After she arrived, I noticed tightness in my chest and a decent amount of pain when I was still in the hospital up until a few days later. My mom didn't remember having such a rough recovery after her deliveries, but I just figured it had

Thought you all might like to see a few photos of Brijin's room. It's still a work in progress, but I think it turned out well. Since we didn't know if she was a boy or a girl until delivery, we went with the gender-neutral, animal theme. My mom, or I guess I better say GRANDMA, bought some cute animal pictures at Target and hung them when she and GRANDPA were up last week to help with Brijin once

Postnatal yoga - tips for teachers and postpartum women
2008-06-07 09:30:01
Here's another great article by Brenda Plakans, one of my favorite yoga bloggers, (Grounding Thru the Sit Bones) about yoga for postnatal women called "Tools for Teaching Postnatal Yoga" on YogaJournal.com. It's written for yoga teachers on how to guide postnatal students, however if you've just given birth, it has great tips for your own, personal yoga practice.A postpartum woman should not exerc
