Movin' and Shakin' 2007-01-24 23:33:02 Pack your bags, we're headed to Buckhead! Seasons 52,
the Darden restaurant group's piece de resistance, has opened for
lunch (try the grouper risotto, at left), and promises to take away some of Nava's lunch money, while Posh, Tom Catherall's venture at the former Seeger's location has everyone talking. And bridal belle Anne Barge, the last of the three to open her new digs in the area, has traded her Four Seasons location for West Paces.
Yum! 2007-01-24 03:27:49 I love discovering cool new dining spots. Yesterday my friend Maizie Hale took me to lunch at Little Alley Tapas in Roswell (tucked into a small strip center off Holcomb Bridge Road) where I had the most delicious She Crab Soup and Tuna and Salmon Tartare. The menu looks amazing and the portions are LARGE tapas. Cool plywood cutout art (for sale) line the walls and I am told they have live music and Flamenco dancing on certain nights. Can’t wait to go back for dinner.

Winter Daze 2007-01-11 21:32:06 It may be mid-January, but a host of new cultural happenings promises to alleviate any winter "blahs" you may be feeling. Internationally acclaimed Atlanta glass artist Hans Godo Frabel's Orchid Daze installation of glass sculptures (left) in the form of orchids, rare and endangered species at the Botanical Gardens begins January 27th. Also that weekend is your final chance at the High to see the first installment of Louvre Atlanta's "Kings Drawings" before they head back to Paris. And not to be outdone, the Fernbank Museum premieres its newest iMAX film Hurricane on the Bayou, a tour of New Orleans and the Lousiana bayou, pre- and post-Katrina via four well-known blues musicians, on the 18th.
Warm up to the arts 2007-01-30 21:18:40 I feel like the cold snap is slowing everyone down just a bit -- so
what could be more perfect than warming up inside some of the city's
art galleries and taking in the new shows? Lots opened over the weekend
and are running through the end of February. Here's the roundup:
Anne Irwin Fine Art has work by self-taught artist David Arms; Orchid Daze with Frabel opened at the Botanical Garden; Marcia Wood Gallery is showing Venske & Spanle's Perchance to Dream and New Work by Amanda Hughen; catch the last half of Luminosity at Huff Harrington Fine Art; a new show opens on Thursday at Lagerquist Gallery - work by Ted Goerschner, Barbara Evans and Sabre Esler will be on display; Solomon Projects has J.D. Walsh's new show Slow Fade; 12 Stories of Birth and Destruction by Gerry Hull is on display at Mason Murer Projects; bold paintings by Brian Schellinger are at Romo Gallery; and The Lowe Gallery has Michael David's Requiem for a Gangster.
Enjoy!
mark your calendars... 2007-02-01 02:48:33
On Thursday, February 22, 2007, at 8 p.m., the Atlanta History Center will present "Timeless Landscape Design: The Four-Part Master Plan. The event will be to mark the arrival of the new book by Hugh Dargan
and Mary Palmer Dargan, nationally known principals in the
Atlanta-based firm of Dargan Landscape Architects. In their new book, Timeless Landscape Design: The Four-Part Master Plan
(Gibbs Smith, Publisher, January 2007), the Dargans explore the depth of visual
art in landscape design. According to the outdoor design
duo, the map to creating flawless landscapes lies in the unique
four-part master plan and the skillful application of the art elements:
line, color, form, and texture, as well as broader design principles
such as proportion, scale, and focalization. Combined, these techniques
are the groundwork for defining “timeless landscapesâ€Â—those that please
the eye, nourish the soul, and make living easier. Sounds like a fascinating event to me.
Field Trip 2007-02-02 03:55:23 It may have been one of the coldest and rainiest days of the year, but that did not stop me and a small, determined group of others from attending lifestyle designer Christine Eisner's Field
Trip this morning. Bright and early (at 9:15 to be exact), our first stop was to the Blue Heron Nature preserve, located just one block from the hustle and bustle of Roswell Road! It's amazing that such serenity can exist in the urban areas of North Buckhead. Our host, Nancy Jones, was a delight. Our next stop was to Jones' wonderful condominium, which was such a personal, happy space. It was a real treat to be there with the other "field trippers." Onward, C Lighting was our final stop, with Yaacov Golan dispensing words of wisdom on the latest in lighting. He knows his craft, and it was great to hear about his lifelong passion with lighting, which began when he was a teenager. What an exciting day!

Excuse Me... But I Was Next 2007-02-08 23:19:32 This morning at the Atlanta Decorative Arts Cener, etiquette heir Peggy
Post (the grandaughter-in-law of Emily Post) discussed some of our
society's most pressing issues involving manners—Blackberrys, cell
phones, and behavior on airplanes not withstanding—and signed copies of
her new book, Excuse
Me But I Was Next...How to Handle the Top 100 Manners Dilemmas.
Lest that scare anyone away, Post reminded the audience that no one can
be perfectly well-behaved all the time (prompted by a cell phone ring
from the crowd!).
En Pointe 2007-02-13 02:48:25 Last week I went to the opening of the Atlanta Ballet's production of The Great Gatsby at the Fox Theatre,
and was blown away by the talent of the cast! I was also somewhat
troubled by the seemingly small audience for opening night. To have
talent like this in our city is wonderful, so if you haven't been to
the ballet yet, you should. And soon! You only have three more chances
to see The Great Gatsby this week before it closes. I promise you’ll
love it!

Film Noir. The gallery's Grand Opening Gala was held Friday, as well as
the opening for Charbonnet, whose work is on display now through March
14. 49-D Bennett Street, 3rd floor, (404) 207-1562

1stdibs.com 2007-03-05 20:50:54 Back-page columnist Marcia Sherrill got us hooked on Michael Bruno's online decorative arts Web site 1stdibs.com, which we featured in February's Hot 100 issue, but you may still be wondering what all the fuss is about. Read here to let The New York Times explain,
and then visit the site to check out the local dealers such as Suzanna
Hamilton Art & Antiques, Pieces, Walter McIntyre, Parc Monceau and

Dickinson-inspired tables 2007-03-06 22:54:49 In the March '07 issue of AH&L, we featured the Palmetto, Georgia, home of Steve and Marie Nygren, founders of South Atlanta's own utopian community Serenbe. But it was a pair of three-legged, rare John Dickinson
side tables in the couple's master bedroom that caught our attention and stayed in our mind for weeks after the shoot. So imagine our surprise when we found similar, reproduction tables at Lee Kleinhelter's Buckhead boutique Pieces! These will surely be snapped up in a heartbeat...Click on the above link or visit piecesinc.com.
