The first step is admitting you have a problem 2008-03-05 08:32:15 I have a disability that I've never really told anyone about.
Actually, I've had it since I was a teenager.
I cannot put things back in my wallet or purse after I've used them.
And by "things" I mean money, phones, credit cards, sunglasses, etc. You know, stuff you might need later.
I have lost more stuff and had to re-issue more credit cards that any human should ever have to do in a lifetime.
Oh, sure, when I lose stuff I vow NEVER to do it again, and, I'll change my ways if I can just have one more chance.
Yet, after I make that vow, I'll stop at the grocery, fling my sunglasses on the seat next to me, go in and buy something and stuff my debit card in my pocket.
I have no idea why I'm unable to put these things away. I don't typically lose other stuff, but, this is getting to Read more:admitting
I'm going to jail 2008-03-04 11:58:25 I rarely post about charities and financial needs here not because I don't care (I do not have a "cold, cold heart" that's one too many "cold"s), but because there's so many worthy causes out there, I wouldn't know where to draw the line at talking about them.
Only? Now I found the line.
It turns out the line is me going to jail, so, I'm going to talk up the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
I've been anonymously selected (I still think it was one of you) to participate in the MDA lock-up to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
My bail is $1,500, or I go to jail on April 3rd.
If you are so inclined, your donation will keep me out of jail.
I don't look good in stripes.
Gift ideas 2008-03-03 19:29:22 I need your help.
What is a good host/hostess gift for Busy Dad to take to England when he goes?
I'd like it to be something representative of home and and easy to transport.
If you're from my town, give me some ideas
that are unique to here.
Thanks!
Everybody worked for the weekend 2008-03-03 10:31:12
The weekend was crazy, not 2 seconds to sit at the computer.
Busy Girl's basketball team was in a surprise 3 day tournament.
I say "surprise" because the had signed up, been told the entry was never received, and, whad'ya know? There we were on the brackets when they came out.
So, the girls had to get it together and play again even though they've moved onto other sports.
Friday night was comical.
We looked like we had never even played basketball before.
The other team had traveled 3 hours for the tournament, the majority were over 6 feet tall, they had matching warm-ups, and, the parents were all sporting matching sweatshirts that read, "District Champions".
Yeah. We were also without our best player.
Fortunately, that was only a warm-up game, but, we were all ready to stand u Read more:Everybody

Leap Day musings 2008-02-29 07:54:51 In case you missed it, today is Leap Day, in which we celebrate the aligning of the Gregorian calendar with the seasons.
As if getting the seasons misaligned with the calendar would matter around here, anyway.
Since the dawn of February, the flowers are blooming, we've had tornadoes, and, this week it snowed on the same day the temperature was in the sixties.
I'm not sure what exactly is supposed to happen today other than the people who were born or married on this day have to endure jokes along the lines of , "Hey, you're really only 8 years old", or, "Wow, you guys have really only been married for 3 years instead of 12."
But, the prevailing sentiment is that we should all do something special today.
So, since this little novelty puts another day between me and my paycheck, as I o
Alltop.com 2008-02-28 14:21:27 Guy Kawasaki was kind enough to include me on his Ultimate Mommy Blog List a while back, so when he wrote to tell me that I was included in his Alltop aggregation site, and asked if I would help spread the word, of course, I said "yes".
I mean, Guy Kawasaki is a big deal, and, who am I to say "no"?
So, Alltop is a collection of single-page aggregations organized by topics such as Fashion, Celebrities, Sports, Gaming, Macintosh, Science, Green, and Autos.
Busymom.net is included in the Moms topic (why not "parents"? Just wondering.)
Go check out Alltop, one stop shopping for some new blog reads.
Flashback 2008-02-28 08:00:27 I have no idea what made me think of this, but, once, I had a boss who corrected me for leaving something called "Google" up on my computer.
She was concerned about what someone would think if they saw "something like that" when they passed by.
Did I mention this was within the past 6 years?
The story of my life 2008-02-28 00:01:35 I got this error when trying to send something on the Internet:

Yeah, server, get in line. There are plenty of other people refusing to fulfill my requests.

Lens me your ears 2008-02-27 23:05:39 So, I'm still trying to take pictures with my new (to me) fancy camera.
I can see how one can get addicted to buying the toys that go with it.
Next up for me is a cable release, a filter and a lens hood thingy.
But, even though I swore I wouldn't, I want need yet another lens, and, your advice.
I have a Canon Digital Rebel XT and the 18-55mm lens that came with it.
I purchased (thanks to Holy Schmidt!) this rockin' 50mm f/1.8 II lens. Love it, you should get one.
Now, I want a zoom of some sort.
I don't require anything too fancy (see: don't know what I'm doing), and, I can't afford to break the bank over it, I just want something I can use at the soccer field, or, wherever.
I'm thinking about a 70-300mm lens.
Your thoughts?

American Idol 2008-02-26 20:29:55 I know some of you are mad at me for posting American
Idol spoilers.
It really wasn't my intention, it was more of a curiosity for me.
I'm just giving my opinion about a couple of the guys here:
Danny Noriega - meh
David Archuleta - Damn. Just damn.
How did I get into paying attention to this show?
This is so unlike me.

There's a new saint in town 2008-02-26 08:03:53 Busy Girl will be Confirmed this year
Yes, I know.
I'll do it for you: "zealot", "organized religion", "spiritual but not religious", "sheep", "papist", "statue worshiper", "idolatry", "not baptized correctly" (insert whatever here).
Just work with me here, I have a point.
OK, OK, you got me. I have as much of a point as I usually ever have.
Actually, I feel another post coming on about Catholicism, but, that's for another time.
I may be naive, but, it's only since I've been hanging around the Internets these past few years that I've discovered how much misinformation, fascination and bias there is about Catholicism out there.
I really thought that stuff died out a century or so ago, but, I was wrong. It's just very strange to me.
Anyway...
Confirmation is a Sacrament, and, th

got busy on his own with Ben Affleck. Sara Silverman and and Matt Damon better watch out.

This is absolutely hilarious.
Why yes, I really am a 13 year old boy.
Busy D. is in da' house 2008-02-22 12:22:08 Longtime readers will note that my youngest child, Busy D. (age 5, kindergarten) is a bit of a character.
I know you think I make some of this up, but, I really don't, and, here's outside corroboration of that fact.
Last night, I was paying to get into the basketball tournament that never ends (we won, going to finals) and the kid taking money at the door was a 3rd grader, about 9 years old, and, he had a buddy with him.
He asked me if I was paying the "family" rate, and, I told him that I was, but, that the rest of my family would arrive in a few minutes.
In order to find out if he would recognize them, I asked if he knew who Busy Boy (age 11, 6th grade) was, figuring that the young kids would surely be able to recognize one of the bigger "cooler" kids.
He gave me a blank look, and,
Things "They" should invent 2008-03-12 09:06:24 OK, don't tell anyone, but, I'm going to apply for a few patents:
- A car with a trash chute
- A laptop that doesn't need a battery and remains powered on and connected to the Internet at all time.
- A dog that can serve up his own food, and, write on the grocery list when the food is gone.
- Parking space "spreader" attachment for the front of the car. Move those pesky already parked cars to the side, and, slide right in between them.
- Ritalin aerosol
- A washer and dryer for the back of the car (actually, I think someone may have beat me to that), so you can get a few chores done at the soccer field.
- Spray on coating to prevent dead trees from falling and crushing the fence that keeps the dogs in the back yard. (OK, maybe that's a niche item).
- Convenient, single serving si Read more:invent

Snow! 2008-03-08 10:58:33 So, we got some snow last night:
The media is all abuzz about said snow.
We were watching the local news, and, an intrepid reporter was interviewing ordinary looking Joe Commuter, and, he asked Joe why he had driven into town from parts outlying in this kind of weather.
Joe Commuter replies, "Well, I drove in to visit my wife at the Women's Prison!"
Intrepid reporter: "..."
Coffee, coffee, coffee, coffee, coffee 2008-03-07 12:05:23 Welcome new visitors!
Would you like some coffee? Because coffee, is so yummy!

Mommies, like you know, love, love, love coffee and stuff!

Let's do it like they do it on the Discovery Channel 2008-03-05 14:54:31 I was walking down the sidewalk earlier, and, I noticed some crows flying around, squawking loudly.
Another lady noticed them, too, and, she spent a lot of time staring at them intently.
I was walking toward her, and, we acknowledged each other and she offers, "I think they're making babies."
Being the polite Southerner (and kray-zee magnet) that I am, I responded with something insightful such as, "They sure are loud, huh?" because I was not about to discuss the mating habit of crows with her.
She then replied, " I saw two geese this morning."
I was waiting for the follow-up along the lines of, "They were doing the 'Let's Make a Gosling' Mambo'", and plotting my escape, when she simply stated, "They were flying east", and, she walked away.
Good to know.

Remember me? 2008-03-16 10:32:07 Sunday? Hello?
How'd that happen?
I know how it happened.
Busy Dad has been out of the country for the past 10 days.
Count them. One, zero days.
Now, I'm not comparing my situation to anyone else's, but my situation is the only one I know, and this has been a significant departure from the norm.
You see, I've had to make my own coffee, AND turn the flood lights off and on in the morning and at night.
How much should one person have to handle, ya know?
My 83 year old MIL is here helping, and, while I'm very grateful for her assistance, it's still like having a guest, and it can be a little stressful.
Actually, things have gone pretty well despite the ve-ry large part of a tree that fell on the fence in a storm the morning after he left.

Mamas don't let your babies make your basketball picks 2008-03-20 14:40:02 I let Busy Girl fill out my handy dandy printable March Madness Bracket sheet.
I pointed out today's Kansas victory to her, and said, "You picked Kansas, right?"
Busy Girl: "I don't remember."
Me: "Well, I'm sure you did, their #1 ranking was right on the bracket there."
Busy Girl: "Huh? Rankings? Where?"
There goes my 2 bucks and my chance at $100 of glory.

The world. She can be good. 2008-03-19 16:00:31 I walked into Panera for lunch.
There was an older gentleman examining the basket where the bread samples usually are.
He was homeless, and I walked by, admittedly kind of lost in my thoughts about getting my food and getting to work using the free wi-fi.
My thoughts were interrupted by a soft and respectful voice:
"Sir, are you hungry? Would it be OK with you if I bought something for you to eat?"
I turned around and saw a young male college student addressing the older gentleman.
The older gentleman agreed, and the younger one got in line with him, helped him select his food and took it to his table and they ate lunch together.
Don't know why I'm telling you that, other than to report that there is good in the world.
Dispatch the "Wah-bulance" please 2008-03-22 19:09:28 Since there's no one left in real life who wants to listen to me whine, I thought I'd tell you guys that I'm sick.
Wah.
I did have to rise from my death bed in order to purchase requisite Easter Bunny stuff, and the skank-girly ringing up my purchases says, "Oh, getting things for the grandbabies?"
Bitch.
OK, I look pretty rough today. But, still...

It's happened to me before when I was with Busy D., but without kids, this was a first.
In what I guess was an attempt to recover, she proceeded to get out the latest US magazine with J-Lo's twins and describe every picture in the story to me while she repeatedly insisted, "There's no way those pictures could be 'real'."
I thought for sure I was on Candid Camera, b Read more:Dispatch
Easter and keister rhyme 2008-03-24 14:37:47 I hope everyone had a lovely Easter
.
We stayed here in town for the first time, I think since we had kids as my MIL decided she had enough of us last week and she didn't plan anything for Easter.
My mother always did the egg hunt preparations here, and my MIL did the rest of the day with food and more chocolate and gifts, so imagine my surprise when I awoke Saturday upon my death bed and realized, "Hey, Easter is tomorrow and the odds of my father buying gifts and chocolate bunnies and eggs filled with candy aren't so good."
So, at the risk of showing up that Other Guy, I arose and went forth to the Wal-Marts and boughteth stuff for Easter, and all was well except me.
The kids are on Spring Break this week, and we have our usual plans of a lot of nothing and I have to work.

Wii are so retro 2008-03-26 15:35:50 I was talking with Donna about her Wii
(heh, I said "her Wii") when I mentioned that I really, really want one.
I'm a teenager of the early 80's before "game room" meant the room in your house dedicated to your PlayStation, your Wii or whatever.
If we wanted to play a game, we had to drive to an actual game room, a storefront with video game machines and quarter dispensers, and boy did I spend me some quarters in my day.
To this day, I'd love to have my own Tapper machine.
The Budweiser version, that is.
Yes, I know I can play it online, but it's not the same.
Must I have a point, here?
Anyway, for someone who loves video games as much as I do, my kids are woefully lacking in game systems.
We have a couple of Gameboy SPs in the house and a PSP, and a Game Cube that works on occa Read more:retro
Don't let me go up the river 2008-03-28 11:56:07 Seriously, y'all.
I'm going to jail next week if you don't help me.
I hate stuff like this.
Don't get me wrong, the Muscular Dystrophy Association is a great cause, and I'm happy to help, but I really don't relish the idea of the "police" dragging me out of my office in the middle of the day.
