The online program allows participants to track their activities, see their prog
Still here 2008-03-07 18:59:34 I am sorry it has been so long since I have posted. I am alive and well in Indiana :) I accepted an offer with a transportation company in Fort Wayne. I will start a week from Monday. I am so glad!!!
Life has had it's ups and downs since I have been here. I have days that I am very sad and lonely. When it gets real bad I simply pray. I simply tell Him that I'm needing some help here and He always sends some my way. I am so very grateful for that - otherwise I may not be able to do this. Even though I know this is the right move for me there are still days in which I almost feel paralyzed with fear and loneliness. But - I do it anyway. I still believe this is where I am suppose to be. I believe that in the near future I will be content living here.
I still haven't found the right church f
A Quick Hello 2008-03-07 12:46:02 Busy, busy Friday! I got my Friday post up on my home blog. Couldn't decide what to write about or pick a meme - so I participated in 4 memes. lol Now I gotta run. I've got shopping I've been putting off all week. Pictures to take down on the river (although I could re-run one from a previous and no one would know the difference), and a doctor's appointment at 2:00.
Good Friday to all. Hope you have a happy day. Read more:Hello

Friday Accountability Report 2008-03-07 11:58:01 I have had a good week. I have been doing my exercise regularly. I have only had a few slip ups on the healthy eating regime. I did indulge in a couple of extra desserts that I should not have had. I do allow myself one nice dessert a week. Whoops! I had three this week. I am encouraged by the fact that I am aware of how many I had. A couple of months ago, I would not have been paying attention. I have lost 5 pounds since the beginning of February. While the weight loss is not going as fast as I would like, a loss is better than a gain. Slow weight loss is probably healthier for me and is easier to sustain over the long haul. Weight loss goal for March: 3-4 more pounds. I am beginning to feel more fit. I have more energy. Marathon training update: I can do 6 miles = 10K. in two hours. I wi Read more:Accountability

April's Incredible Balsamic Vinaigrette: AlmostFit's weekly Friday recipe 2008-03-07 10:27:52 I've posted today's weekly recipe over at AlmostFit.com. The idea behind the weekly feature is in general, most people have more time on the weekends to try new things like recipes. My goal is to provide a recipe once a week so that some of the adventurers out there can jump into cooking over the weekend.
The focus of AlmostFit is eating Real Food in Moderation, so the recipes are not going to focus on low fat/low carb techiques or measurements; they are healthy recipes that when eaten in moderation will hopefully increase your appreciation for real food, rather than the chemically processed alternatives. I know that this is not the approach for many of us, so please understand that I mean no disrespect in any way when it comes to low fat/low carb techniques. I just know that for me, thos Read more:April

What Does Quieting Your Mind and Manifesting Have in Common? 2008-03-07 09:34:34 What Does Quieting Your Mind and
Manifesting
Have in Common
?
Quieting Your Mind is the single greatest
gift you can give yourself...
Why?
Because, simply stated, it gets you out of your
head and into your Heart...
Did You Know?
97% of our thoughts on a given day are the same
thoughts as the day before?
WOW!
If you find this hard to believe (as I did when I first
heard this staggering statistic) just take a look at
what occupies your mind in a given hour or morning...
If you're like me, I found that most of my thoughts
were related to whatever stress or thing in my life
was bugging me at that time. And yes, they were
the same thoughts from the day before, and the
day before that day.
It's essential for our mind, body and Spirit to take
time to quiet our busy minds.
Here are just a
Eating Frequency and Patterns 2008-03-07 06:59:43 Total calorie intake should be distributed throughout the day, with the consumption of 4 to 5 meals/snacks per day including breakfast. Consumption of greater calorie intake during the day may be preferable to evening consumption.
Eating Together as a Family Creates Better Eating Habits Later in Life
Eating together as a family during adolescence is associated with lasting positive effects on dietary quality in young adulthood, according to researchers at the University of Minnesota.
More than 1,500 students were surveyed once during high school and again when they were 20 years old to determine the long-term effects of family meals on diet quality, social eating, meal structure and meal frequency. Participants were asked questions such as how often they ate family meals, how much the Read more:Frequency

Skip Breakfast, Pack on the Pounds 2008-03-07 06:33:58 Do you regularly eat breakfast? Or do you skip breakfast?

According to a study released on Monday, teens that eat breakfast are more likely to eat healthy all day long. In fact, the more often a person ate breakfast, the less likely the chances that they will be overweight or obese.
"It's interesting to note that the kids who eat breakfast on a daily basis overall have a much better diet and are more physically active," said Dr. Peter Richel, chief of pediatrics at Northern Westchester Hospital Center in Mount Kisco, N.Y.
More than 2,000 adolescents were followed for five years. Participants completed detailed surveys on their eating patterns and also provided information on their height, weight, body-mass index and physical activity.

Lifetime Status and a Weight Loss Win 2008-03-06 22:42:15
I reached lifetime status at my Weight
Watcher meeting last night. Just thought I'd share my favorite "after" picture. It's Me (TB) and my son (AB). Those pants were size 44's and I used to fill them out to the fullest. Now, I'm fitting comfortably into size 32's.
I also weighed in at my "At Work Weight Loss
Challenge" today. We threw $10 into a pot and had to set a goal of at least 5 pounds. I set 6 pounds as a goal and easily lost 9 pounds. So far, 6 out of 45 people reached their goal, so it will be a nice little payday. Read more:Lifetime

Think Healthy Thoughts!!! 2008-03-06 11:05:40 OK, so I'm starting my Pilates instructor certification tomorrow, and I'm starting to feel like crud. Achy, tired, sneezing. NOT GOOD,lol!
I'm hoping it's nerves. And allergies. And maybe something that will miraculously disappear in the next few hours.
A bit of history: I was going to try for my certification a little over a year ago. But I thought about it, and realized I wasn't quite ready. Fast forward to October of 2007. I signed up, paid my fee, and was all ready to go. Until they canceled the class for lack of participation. OK, fine. I got my money back, and figured I'd just take the next one.
Except there weren't any. Oh sure, they had some in Texas and Pennsylvania, but I live in California!
So I heard of a couple other organizations offering certifications, and I signed up. On
Lo-cal Snacks 2008-03-06 10:42:57 Check out the Diet Post for a Thursday Thirteen list of lo-cal snacks.
1 - 2 Pounds Per Week 2008-03-06 07:50:35 An individualized reduced calorie eating plan is the basis of the dietary component of a comprehensive weight management program. Reducing dietary fat and/or carbohydrates is a practical way to create a caloric deficit of 500 – 1000 calories below estimated energy needs and should result in a weight loss of 1 – 2 lbs per week.
Reduction of caloric intake may result in nutritional inadequacies; therefore, special attention should be paid to maintaining adequate intake of vitamins and minerals. A one a day vitamin/mineral supplement is advisable.
Although lower fat diets without targeted caloric reduction help promote weight loss by producing a reduced caloric intake, lower-fat diets coupled with total caloric reduction produce greater weight loss than lower-fat diets alone.

Goals. (Sometimes the train makes an unscheduled stop.) 2008-03-06 03:01:41 I've written enough blogs today, but I just had to write this one. I had the most wonderful day in which I didn't even come close to meeting my stated goal on the goals group. While I could feel bad about this, I am choosing instead, to look at the wonderful way my day unfolded and how sometimes an escape from the daily routine of working (both at work and at home), exercising and eating right can actually be a good thing. I feel so good tonight and I realize I really NEEDED today's unplanned excursions and escape.
I have been looking for a chain link fence and finally found an affordable one on Craigslist. The family selling it lives on the nearby Army base, so I phoned my mom this morning to see if she wanted to run around with me to take care of a couple of errands, and get me on post Read more:Goals

Putting Your Kitchen on a Diet 2008-03-05 21:43:17 From the New York Times:
Most of us try to slim down our bodies. But a new book suggests the better strategy is to first slim down our kitchens.
Author Peter Walsh is best known for his role as a clutter expert and organization consultant on the popular television show “Clean Sweep.” His new book, “Does This Clutter Make My Butt Look Fat?,'’ focuses on how clutter in the home stands in the way of a more healthful lifestyle. One of his main suggestions is to clear clutter and toss out the useless appliances that get in the way of healthful food preparation in our kitchens.
Mr. Walsh says he started seeing the link between clutter and weight problems when readers of his first book on decluttering began telling him how they also had lost weight as a result of getting organized. Clu Read more:Kitchen

Do you have a "gorge" reflex? 2008-03-05 17:45:39 For lunch today, I cooked up a quick meal: grilled young zucchini stuffed with goat cheese (if you saw my goat cheese stuffed mushrooms recipe from last Friday, you might understand that I've got some goat cheese that I'm trying to use up ;) ), topped with a small amount of high-quality bacon (meaning naturally lean because it came from a farm that doesn't use things like sugars or artificial hormones to "beef up" the livestock). I cooked 3 of those on the grill and had the leftovers of our salad from dinner last night.
It was heavenly.
But I must admit, when I cooked the piece of bacon, I had the overwhelming urge to eat bacon - a LOT of bacon. I love the smell of it; I love the crunchy but soft texture when its cooked just right; I love the salty, savory nature of it; and especially wh Read more:gorge
Dreams 2008-03-05 13:41:39 The last couple of weeks I have been working a lot for a retired lady. I trained my replacement. Stress! Yesterday I got talked into coming in and doing the dreaded data entry/dispatch job without having the re-orientation that I had requested and did not get. Stress and more stress! I have not done that job for a year. During that time anything that could be changed, has changed. In the afternoon the phone started ringing. We need this and this and that! Aaa...humm..... yikes! Quickly locating the goods was a nightmare. Stat! ..hurry hurry...hospital...get the stuff... Stress!
Last night, I had trouble falling asleep. I finally made it to dreamland about 3:00AM. I get like this when I have been stressed. My mind does not switch off. It goes into the energizer bunny mode. It keeps going a Read more:Dreams
7 things you should be paying for when dining out 2008-03-05 11:32:01
I just posted a new article over at AlmostFit this morning - its part 2 of my 7 part series on dining out. This article focuses on adjusting your mindset from a "quantity equals value" perspective to remembering the things
that eating out should be about - the elements of the experience.
As has always been the case for me, one of the biggest challenges I find as a writer is to stay focused on my topic. I'm notorious for tangential sub-conversations with my friends. Out of curiosity (and to make sure I was spelling it right), I looked up "tangential" over at Merriam Webster, and among other things, the word "tangent" is a synonym for "irrelevant" - which as much as I hate to admit it, sometimes those spin-off discussions are.
Kind of like, apparently, this one. :)
At any rate, if you ha
Wednesday 2008-03-05 10:53:16
Good Morning! I've had a bad few days, but I'm doing better. Chronic illness is the pits! After 16 years I'm still learning how to deal with it. At first I thought that at some time I would get better and be the way I was pre-illness. After a few years my goal was to learn to manage the symptoms and avoid flare-ups. Now I just want to be able to take full advantage of the good days and get through the bad days without giving up. Read more:Wednesday
Mifflin-St Jeor Equation 2008-03-05 09:04:20
According to a study completed in 2005, estimated calorie needs should be based on Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR). If possible, RMR should be measured by indirect calorimetry (IC). IC is estimation of energy expenditure via the measurement of oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production. If RMR cannot be measured by IC, then the Mifflin-St. Jeor equation using actual weight is the most accurate for estimating RMR for overweight and obese individuals.
Mifflin-St Jeor Equation
s
Men: RMR = (9.99 X weight) + (6.25 X height) – (4.92 X age) + 5
Women: RMR = (9.99 X weight) + (6.25 X height) – (4.92 X age) – 161
Weight is measured in kilograms and height in centimeters:
Current weight ___________divide by 2.2 = _______________ kilograms (kg)
Current height ___________inches x 2.54 = _

Good things I've done for myself. 2008-03-04 11:38:32
In reading Diana's post about goals I realize that I've actually done a lot in the last couple of years to improve my diet and get back on track for healthy eating. I've also been working steadily on increasing my exercise. I have joined NaBloPoMo's monthly challenge and the theme for the month of March is lists. So, with no further adieu, here is my list of good things
I've done for myself
in the last couple of years.
1. Decreased sodium. (This included giving up my beloved soy sauce) ***cries***
2. Added nuts to my daily diet. I mostly eat almonds because they are lowest in fat, but I also eat walnuts, pecans and occasionally peanuts.
3. Added flaxseed and pine nuts to my daily diet.
4. Changed back to skim milk from 2%.
5. Started eating a salad almost every day.
(This was a diff
Ditch the Hubby, I'm Going to Exercise! 2008-03-04 10:05:16
This isn't a rant so much as it is an observation.
My husband, Mark, is a truck driver and ever since he got a new route which would enable him to be home every day, we both thought it would be nice to get healthy TOGETHER. (his idea btw) That means eat the same foods and do the same (or nearly the same) types of workouts. Now, he's not overweight at all. He's just needs to tone his tummy a little because he says it really bothers him and he wants to lose it. Fine. (he's been saying this for the past 3 years btw)
At first it was fine - when it was time to exercise, he was on board. (day 1 for him)
Then he would only do SOME of the exercises, claiming that they didn't do anything for him. But after observing him, it turns out he's not doing them properly and taking the easy way out. Afte Read more:Exercise

Ode to a comedian dying young 2008-03-04 04:21:27 I was once part of a group of rambunctious teenagers who were hanging out on the river walk in San Antonio in the late 70s. We were singing Hebrew songs, even though we had no idea what the words meant. However, we were with Marvin, and we knew what that meant. We were in for the time of our lives.
In the midst of our singing, we were confronted by group of Palestinian students nearby who began “communicating” with us. Without a working knowledge of Arabic, we made a safe assumption that they were neither praising us, our ancestors, nor our descendents.
Our response to their outbursts was to sing louder. We were under the false impression that elevating the volume would make us and our enemies understand the meaning of our nonsense syllables.
Before we knew what was happening, Marvi Read more:young
