El Poblano 2007-01-25 07:19:00 El Poblano is a cemita poblana truck that parks at the corner of Fairfax and Pico weekdays from 11-4pm. The cemita poblana milanesa is the truck specialty but they also serve tacos.
They were out of al pastor so I went with carnitas and carne asada.
I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the meat at El Poblano. Ever since the Tacos Kimberly incident I approach some trucks with the
hottest salsa in LA? 2007-01-22 00:43:00 carne asada taco with habanero salsa
from El Super Taco
I was asked awhile back which taco establishment has the hottest salsa.
King Taco certainly is in the conversation with their infamous salsa roja. The same goes for el taurino(same salsa). Cactus taqueria has a spicy salsa roja and some nights they have a habanero salsa. On the westside Don Felix used to have a intense habanero salsa but

Dennis Kucinich 2007-01-17 10:47:00 I havn't had the desire to go taco hunting lately. It may be the cold weather at night that is keeping me in. But it's also the fact that my friend the Fabulous Kiwi Simmons whom on occasions serves as my co-pilot has refused to join me on anymore taco journeys until I admit that DennisKucinich
is a viable Presidential candidate. Oh and also..I have to stop calling him Dennis Kookinich.

El Hameca 2007-01-16 07:35:00 "hey bandini...try the taco truck on 11th st next to the salvation army, I'm scared to"
"I'm scared to also" I wrote back.
"You're the taco hunter not me!" she replied.
Point taken.
I don't generally report on mariscos trucks. As much as I love mariscos the trucks that specialize in them don't always make the greatest meat tacos and I don't want to give a bad review to a mariscos truck
Taqueria Morelia 2007-01-09 09:17:00 I stumbled on to the La Tienda carneceria on Inglewood Ave in the city of Lennox by accident. Perhaps the taco gods were looking over me this sunny afternoon because I had every intention to get on to the 405 north. But as luck would have it I missed that onramp and found myself on Inglewood Ave staring down this taco cart.
The sign read "stop ya estan listos los pollos" which translates to-
Tacos Carrillo 2007-02-03 11:58:00 No matter where you are in LA you're really only five minutes from a carne asada taco and a bottle of sangria.Even if you find yourself in the neighborhoods of the rich and famous you shouldn't worry . The rich and famous hire full time gardeners, housekeepers, and maintenance workers and they need their authentic antojitos too.In fact Mulholland Dr is pretty much a taco truck commune during the day. There are three between Beverly Glenn and Coldwater and further west Bel Air even has a taco truck to call it's own.I only had a few bucks cash in my pocket and I lucked out with Tacos
Carrillo. Tacos were only $1 each. I ordered two (asada and carnitas) and a can of root beer.I waited for what felt like days as construction workers, gardeners, and housekeepers all came and went hauling off plates, sometimes bag fulls of food. It wasn't until I heard "dos tacos!!!" that I actually thought I would get me tacos. I was quite worried my friends. These were beauties..two tortillas packed wit
Rambo's Tacos 2007-02-07 12:00:00 Rambo's tacos in Eagle Rock is one of LA's most well known taco trucks. I always thought that John Rambo would have made a great taquero. Thank god I'm not the only one.The mural on the side of the truck rocks. Rambo is holding a plate of tacos while being shot by a sniper in a helicopter. Does Rambo drop the tacos? Hell no.And who is the babe in the camouflage hotpants? Wah wah wee wahThe tacos are small and tasty. Each come with a dollop of salsa roja. The roja is peppery, not too spicy but there is enough chile flavor to warrant having a beverage handy.al pastor and carne asadaIf you order the carne asada you won't have to worry about any fatty bits, these tacos are lean and tender. The pastor leaves alot to be desired though, while the pork isn't fatty there really isn't anything al pastor-ish about it and even the salsa can't save the dryness of the pork.carnitas and carne asadaThe carnitas has subtle flavor to it and it first I thought that it was too subtle..that the lac Read more:Rambo

Are you the owner of a mariscos/taco truck or do you know someone who is?
A Malibu proprietor is looking for a good mariscos/taco truck for their oceanfront parking location and I'm assisting in the search. Yeah that's right,I've just added taco consultant to my bio.
This is a prime location especially with the surf crowd, fisherman and beach goers.
Requirements? Good tacos! good mariscos!(shrimp cocktail, shrimp tostada etc)
Hours- weekday and weekends morning, lunch, afternoons (ultimately up the vendor when they want to arrive and leave )
Already have a weekday spot you are loyal to but interested in a weekend daylight gig? Or maybe you have a loyal following at night and are looking for a daytime spot.
So if you are a taco truck operator and are interested in the weekday spot, weekend spot or both e-mail me your details.
El Sauz 2007-02-12 07:55:00 I was on the passenger side of a dirty Volkswagen Bug in Glendale when I looked out the window and saw the El Sauz taco stand. A taco stand that rang a bell not only because just that morning I had received an email about it but because since this taco journey I have recieved no less than 5 "dude you need to try this place" notes in my inbox."Want a taco?" I said to my friend grinning from ear to ear. And of course who in their right mind could decline such an invitation?(knowing such a decline would have sent me into a tuck n roll out the window of his VW on to San Fernando Rd he accepted)So there we were, inside the walls of El Sauz, in line behind two latinas with a baby stroller and a crying baby and my taco companion couldn't take his eyes off the one in tight jeans with the thong underwear and big ass. "It's like a ripe peach on a tree just dangling there waiting for someone to pluck it out of the sky" he pontificated loud enough for everyone inside the stand to hear, including
The Surfer Taco 2007-02-15 07:56:00 Driving west out of downtown LA on 6th street the shadows from the high rises give way to open air and the great wide open of the city. It is here where the taco truck culture thrives, where the taqueros depend on neighborhood loyalties, word of mouth and a bond with the community where they become that dependable food source. And that is where I found The Surfer
Taco, a taco truck that parks at 6th and Columbia ave. A truck that serves everything from mariscos and cemitas poblanas to tacos, sopes, burritos, and tortas. The creative mural displayed a worst case scenerio of global warming. Will 6th and colombia be the new shoreline? Holy smokes I hope not. Then again...I wouldn't mind surfing to work.Upon arrival I noticed the the rotating al pastor spit, a sight that makes every taco eater salivate. A hunk of pork topped with a pineapple rotated next to a heating aparatus, while other meats sizzled on the flattop grill. On the counter containers of salsas(roja, verde), limes, radishes, oni

Taqueria Chihuahua now open 2007-02-19 02:34:00 Taqueria Chihuahua
on Venice blvd in Mar Vista is now open. Many will remember the Taqueria Chihuahua on Olympic and 20th in Santa Monica which had a reputation as one of the Westside's best taquerias. They lost their lease last year and have now relocated to the Mar Vista area.Anyone hoping to find the old Taqueria Chihuahua will be disappointed. The menu at the new location is much more condensed. Gone are the nachos , the enchiladas, the chile colorado burrito, tacos dorados and one of the best bean and cheese burritos known to mankind. The new location is a stripped down taco hut with a menu consisting of burritos, tacos, tortas and quesadillas and meat choices of asada, carnitas, al pastor, lengua, buche, cabeza, chicharron. Possibly a more in tune menu with the immigrant neighborhoods of Mar Vista. Only time will tell.carnitas, asada, al pastorThe pricing is different as well. Tacos are $1.37 each and they are the small tacos. I love the small tacos but generally these are $1 a
LA City Election: The taco factor 2007-02-26 03:42:00 There is a Los Angeles City election on March 6th. If you are a taco lover and a practitioner of the taco lifestyle it is your duty to vote. (It is your civic duty to vote anyway)Several seats are up for the LA City Council. As reported on these pages the current LA City Council is anti-taco. Back in may of 2006 the city council passed a draconian anti-taco truck ordinance, one that put undue hardship on legally licensed LA street vendors. The ordinance mandates that catering trucks must move location every hour or face a fine. To add insult to injury Councilwoman Janice Hahn raised fines from $95 to $310 for third time offenders. So I decided to find out which challengers if any were pro-taco and anti taco and if any of the incumbents still held their anti taco views. Not surprisingly the incumbent council members did not respond to any of my inquires. LA city council, you're still on noticeI was hoping someone from the Monica Rodriguez camp would respond. Election Day 2007-03-06 23:03:00 Remember last week when I mentioned the election and how it is your civic duty to vote? Well that still stands. Get out the taco vote! today is the day! make history!hah! You are so lazy. You are still reading. Why don't you vote? You have a chance to change your government. Okay fine, keep reading.According to Zuma Dogg at Mayor Sam's Sister City blog our candidate Juan "Johnny Jay" Jimenez is on the rise. My first stop was El Capitan a taco truck that parks on the lot of the El Capitan Taqueria. The actual taqueria looked to be closed or was possibly just used for storage. Or who knows maybe there were some shady poker games going on inside. al pastor and carne asadaThe tacos were 2 for $1 and burritos were only $2 . Hugo's Tacos 2007-03-09 07:57:00 So yeah, the City Council Election didn't go the way this taco reporter wanted and we have to live the next two years with the anti-taco government we have elected. I say we but the sad fact is less than 10% of the registered voters showed up for this election. I didn't want to do this to you taco nation but I'm putting you on notice.Maybe next time you'll put down your Ipod or blackberry or whatever and participate in democracy.I didn't want to dwell on my election disappointment. I needed a taco and badly. I was in the valley on business when I got a call from a co-worker."Hey, while you're in the valley you should try Hugo's tacos on coldwater" "I've been there before, it's too expensive " I said"Oh ok..nevermind then...I just thought..""You thought what?" Howdy's Taqueria 2007-03-15 08:02:00 photo via YelpI'll make this simple and to the point. Howdy's Taqueria in Culver City sucks.I ate at Howdy's last week but needed a week to calm myself down to get to a place where I could calmly say "this place sucks".If I would have written this report right after eating my tacos this entry would have been full of so many f-bombs I would have had to go into rehab.Lets get one thing out of the way though. The name Howdy's Taqueria doesn't bother me. If the food was great they could call themselves Howdy Doody's Taqueria for all I care. I'm not bothered by the name. You can't however call yourself a taqueria if you have a chicken ceaser wrap on the menu. Howdy's is really part of the "fresh mex" family. If Rubio had sex with Wahoo's fish taco you'd get Howdy. There's a little bit of Rubio's phony authenticity with a little of Wahoo's casual kick back atmosphere. The prices are really outragous. I know it's physically attached to a movie theater but do they really have to
Sergio's Tacos 2007-03-19 21:00:00 After the fiasco at Howdy's I needed to feel a real taco in my belly again so I called Big H ,an eastside taco informant with lots of knowledge when it comes to eastside taquerias. I told him about my lettuce taco at Howdy's and how I needed an authentic East La taco to get me back on track."Lettuce on your taco? only on the Westside" he said"It was vile, I was insulted..It's made me stronger though..more determined"Big H pointed me towards Sergio

in the city of Commerce. "During the day it's just the taco hut,if you go at night they open the taco truck in the parking lot too" he said.Commerce is an industrial city that borders Montebello and Vernon. When most people think of Commerce they think of Commerce casino. That and the dodgy roads because of the hundreds of big rigs that deliver goods to the warehouses in the area every day. When I walked into Sergio's it was standing room only but It's one of those places where you can't really tell how crowded it is until you
Lonchera "Candy" 2007-03-26 02:57:00 Every weekend this lonchera parks at the corner of Main St and 23rd in downtown LA. While most of the weekend trucks in the area serve up plates of mariscos and shrimp cocktails this truck specializes in one thing and one thing only, barbacoa de cabeza. The barbacoa at this lonchera is estillo Capulhuac(from central mexico),which is traditionally lamb cabeza. In northern Mexico cow cheek is the norm. If you're at your local Chipotle chain the barbacoa is shredded beef.Chipotle has probably done more to confuse the American taco eating public when it comes to barbacoa. Even I'm confused while writing this. One thing you can count on though, if it's authentic barbacoa it's cabeza. Whether it's cow or lamb will depend on which part of Mexico the recipe originates from.At this lonchera you can buy it by the lb($7) or individual tacos for $1. If you buy it by the lb your order comes with corn tortillas and containers of salsa, onions and cilantro. Lamb cabeza is definitely an acquired t Read more:Candy
Taqueria La Cañada 2007-03-24 11:08:00 I didn't quite make it to King Taco. For whatever reason when driving down Hoover St I pulled over in front of Taqueria La Cañada.I had never seen this taqueria before. It was a street I rarely drove down, opting instead to take Alvarado. So when I noticed a taqueria sandwiched between a panaderia I was more than curious. When I walked in it was just me and a quite rotund looking fellow that was plowing through a plate of costillos de res(beef ribs). I was about to order when this same man waddled up to the counter and gestured for more ribs. When the cook started to cut the ribs the man yelled(with salsa drizzling down his chin) "no, los pollos!". I didn't have to speak fluent español to know the cook was quite annoyed by the gordo. Finally it was my turn to order and I went with one taco carnitas, one taco asada para aqui. I watched as the cook took a hunk of carnitas and chopped it up and ladled salsa roja and salsa verde over my tacos. The asada was fatty as was the carnitas. I
Los Pericos 2007-03-28 10:31:00 Tacos are truly the sum of their parts. You have the tortillas, meat, and salsa and they must each pull their own weight for the taco to be complete. The tortillas are the least important. While they are the foundation of a great taco, a good taco can certainly get by on average tortillas. You may have heard me when talking about homemade tortillas say that the tortillas made the taco. That's only true once the meats and salsa have held up their end of the bargain. Even the greatest tortillas can't save a taco when the meat is of poor quality. It is the meat that really makes or breaks a taco because while a great salsa or great tortillas can save a taco when the meat is just average if the meat is too fatty when it is not intended to be it's a deal breaker.al pastor and asadaAnd that was the case at Los Pericos. The salsa was really good , the meat was inedible. The asada was dry with excess flab and the pastor equally fatty and unappetizing. The salsa was so good the meat could have

El Matador 2005-11-29 10:50:00 Los Angeles is a taco town. New York and Chicago may quarrel over who has the better hot dogs and San Francisco may have the mission style burrito but when it comes to tacos Los Angeles has no equal. There are sunny days year round in Los Angeles which allow this taco environment to thrive and when the sun goes down it's never too cold to enjoy a plate of tacos at a taco truck or outdoor cart. Which brings us to El Matador
, a taco truck on Western and Lexington Ave in East Hollywood. This taco truck has been on my radar for quite some time and I was eager to test the asada and al pastor. After a cumbersome drive up western blvd during rush hour(seriously took me 45 minutes to go 2 miles) the truck came into view just before the 101 freeway parked on the property of an auto shop. A no frills menu of tacos, burritos and tortas as well as your choice of meat keeps things quite simple when ordering. I almost went completely off the deep end to order a burrito de sesos(cow brains) but I ca
Don Chente 2007-05-03 07:31:00 Yes my friends, I am still alive and kicking , and still eating tacos! I was told I had blog fatigue. I had all the symptoms : no new posts, not responding to email, curling up in fetal positions and listening to the Arcade Fire. But I'm out of it now..and I am back and I have plenty of tacos to report about. Even while i have not been blogging I have not sworn off the taco. On the contrary my friends, I have been absorbing the taco. The city has swallowed me, and I have ran through her streets naked with jubilance with each taco wagon that comes into view. So I got an email."Don Chente is the fastest growing taco chain in Los Angeles,10 locations and 6 more on the way!"It sounded like an advertisement. But if it was true it could change the balance of power in the taco business in LA. Sure, King Taco is the king, they have 18 locations, they have name branding, they have the loyal following, and of course they have the hot sauce that can rip the backside off Beelzebub. They are King T
Los Cinco Puntos 2007-05-14 04:49:00 Los Cinco Puntos is a neighborhood carniceria named after the five points intersection of Cesar Chavez Blvd, Lorena Blvd, and Indiana st. Everyone knows and loves it. It's an East LA institution. During the winter holidays Los Cinco Puntos sells a lot of masa and tamales. People line up out the door and go crazy for the tamales and orders are placed weeks in advance. You can order meats by the lb and tortillas by the dozen or you can order single items prepared such as burritos, tacos and tortas. I ordered a couple of tacos(carnitas and asada) and noticed a pig nose in one of the cases of pork. I wanted to just ask for the pig nose in my taco. It wasn't a full snout, just the end of the nose. I should have asked for carnitas con el nariz de puerco. The tortillas at 5 puntos are homemade and made right behind the counter on a large flat grill. After your tortillas are grilled they are topped with meats and then your choice of salsa. They had a pico de gallo, a guacamole salsa, and a sa
Tacos Celaya 2007-05-16 07:50:00 There's a parking lot at the corner of Washington and Union in Pico Union. By day it's an unassuming parking lot, sometimes filled with cars sometimes not. Mostly not. Come twilight(sometimes earliar) a taco truck named Tacos
Celaya rolls in serving mariscos and tacos to locals and all comers.I first noticed her driving west out of downtown. The words mariscos painted across the front of the truck next to words Tacos Celaya. Celaya is a city from the state of Guanajuato in the central highlands of Mexico. Authentic tacos from the city of Celaya? I've never been to Celaya so I can't be the judge . But what I can judge is how these tacos compare to the local competition(king taco, el taurino) and they compare quite favorably.al pastor and carne asadaThe al pastor is cut right from the spit. The pork, moist and sweet in the middle , charred at the tips. The asada, greasy but oh so good, the right amount of spice and charred bits in every bite. . Both tacos topped with onions, cilantr

Texcoco.Texcoco is a municipality located in the valley of Mexico east of Mexico City. Lake Texcoco was originally one of the five lakes contained in the Valley of Mexico. The mural on this wagon is interesting. In the background is Lake Texcoco and the Valley of Mexico. The woman looks a bit overwhelmed. But what is the man holding? The front of the wagon had no list of meats or prices so when the taquero looked at me as if to say que quieres? I responded with "pastor y asada..one of each" hoping that I hadn't stumbled on a truck that served only borrego or barbacoa. I was afraid he would respond with "esto es un lonchera barbacoa! baboso! Mira el gabacho....ello dice "dame carne asada hahaha!" but my fears were quelled when the taquero smiled and said "$1.60 my friend" . I pushed two dollars through the window of the taco wagon and made note of the excellent deal "You could have really embarrassed me my fr
