Must growing up equals pain?
2008-04-28 01:04:00
Scarification, a new word I learnt from an episode I caught on National Discovery channel. I actually can't tolerate scenes of surgeries in progress or scene involving flesh and blood. In this instance, the subject caught my attention. This ritual took place in Africa, if I'm not mistaken. A teenage boy was preparing anxiously to a bloody ritual which was supposed to mark the beginning of manhood for him. Not prepared of what's going to be shown on the screen, my undisturbed attention was focused on the narration. Apparently, boys must undergo this traditional scarring of the body before he can be accepted as an adult. Shockingly, the tool used to cut or scar the body (what I saw was on the chest until below the navel) is not a proper knife. It was some kind of broken piece of metal, steril

Budget Vacation For The Family
2008-05-02 01:03:00
The second term school holidays are around the corner. Let's check our bank account, if any budget is allocated for a short vacation. The furthest I had been was Hong Kong umpteen years ago (Hey, it's time to pamper Mom). Now, with four of us, traveling overseas for a vacation can be a costly affair. When it comes to planning for holidays, suddenly nothing beats this priority and I can find time to do it. Can we afford a vacation to Europe? That's when Internet becomes another such powerful tool. One would be spoilt, even confused, with the many choices of budget hotels sold over the net. Popular cities such as Paris, Rome, London and Dublin are recommended. At least W can see with his bright eyes how London bridge looks so tough that it really wouldn't fall. H can boast about visiting the

Chilli for my friend
2008-05-01 04:13:00
Can you believe that W actually took this little container with chilli and put into his school bag? On the way to school on Wednesday, while he was chatting away, he caught my attention when he told me that he had chilli in his bag.I demanded to see his bag and was shocked to discover this little container. It was taken from the fridge at home. Upon interrogation, he told me he wanted to give to Eason, one of the kids in Tr O's place and let him eat. For the entire day, I was still wondering why on earth he wanted to give chilli to his friend .When I related the story to Tr O, she couldn't help but burst to laughter. She always 'threatens' her kids that whoever is the last to finish their meals will be punished to take chilli. W is almost always the last. He probably wanted to 'retaliate'

Even Bill Gates limits computer time at home
2008-05-03 10:31:00
Such a good excuse to limit H's computer time. I got to know that even Bill Gates limits his daughter who was hooked on a computer game, to only 45 minutes a day. So, it's a very valid reason why I shouldn't be too generous on this.Though he can trade in his stars with computer time, I had better set another condition to tighten this. He shouldn't be making a lot of noise because we are emulating the creater of Microsoft here.

Like father like sons
2008-05-07 12:24:00
Sorry, Daddy is blog-shy. Here come the Junkbins...Chips and the likes are favourites of the old and young guys of the family. How to stop the kids when Daddy can't even resist the crunchy junk?

Girls don't like short guys
2008-05-07 01:05:00
Yesterday, the transport aunty,MF, called me up at the office and related a funny incident that happened in her car, to me. She said H told her that he would be drinking the soup (recommended by her) that night. Another boy in the same car commented that guys need to be tall. MF asked him curiously why he thought so. He explained that the bride would dislike the groom who is shorter than her since she is going to be wearing high-heels shoes, during the wedding photograph session. 'No use even if the guy is rich', that's what the boy said. MF couldn't help it and burst into laughter and she called me immediately to relate this conversation to me. My H was listening quietly without responding, rather unusual for this boisterous young lad. Most of the time, this implies he IS listening.

Am I the Queen of their hearts?
2008-05-06 01:13:00
Saw this online ad about getting gifts for your mother, mother-in-law or wife. It keeps me thinking that I'm already a mother who may be showered with gifts or at least a simple gesture of appreciation. My guys are not capable enough to buy me gifts.Actually, material gifts are the least I expect from them. Just a simple card will touch my heart. In fact, H gave me a card about two weeks ago. It's for Parents' Day, he wrote. As H is mature enough to express his feelings by way of a gift or card or something, am I supposed to expect something from him? And if there is no action from him, what does this implicate? That he doesn't cherish this mom of his? Or maybe a 'I love you, Mummy' is sufficient from his opinion. Well, he has spoken his heart out with the card. And I appreciate that. It's

Learning how to make sushi (in tray) - Part 1
2008-05-09 03:51:00
I never used to like sushi but H and Daddy loves it. I develop liking to sushi after a few samplings. Then, when my sister offered to demonstrate sushi making, I took the opportunity to make full use of her generosity, taking pictures of the step-by-step demo as well as a short video of the toughest part of sushi making. Some of the challenges of making this delicacy are the ingredients are not widely available in most supermarkets and they are expensive too. Some of the ingredients such as vinegar and rice are only used for making sushi, so either we have to keep the entire bottle for the next sushi making or what I do is to share with my sister. Nevertheless, nothing is more challenging than parenting. Here's the recipe:Ingredients for the rice:450 gm or 3 cups of short grain rice750 ml wa

Both were born during epidemic period
2008-05-08 03:31:00
H was born when Malaysia was plagued by one of the worst haze condition and financial crisis. Thinking back, I'm not sure if there is any relationship between the air quality while he was still in my womb and his asthmatic condition.W was born when SARS was feared as the epidemic of the decade. So, I should be blamed for being overly paranoid when it comes to hygiene.

Snow Wash and Car Wash
2008-05-12 08:44:00
For those who don't know what's snow wash,it's a type of car wash using generous amount of soap foam that is sprayed on the entire surface of the car. Basically, the car looks like it's covered with snow, hence the name 'snow wash'.Today while on our way to dinner, W said, 'Snow wash is good. Water wash is no good.'I don't think I need to explain the meaning of his words.

She's more than a mother
2008-05-11 01:53:00
I feel this is an appropriate time to post this. Why I say she's more than a mother ? Not only is she my mother, she also plays a motherly role to my guys and her other grandchildren and children in-law.Here she is, playing with the guys one Sunday morning. (Notice W is still in his pyjamas in the first picture.) I actually stopped her from adventurous game with the guys when they got more excited.

Today is the big day
2008-05-10 23:46:00
Notice two sets of greetings. The nicer handwriting was obviously written by the teacher followed by W's writing. The first card is from H (the second one from him) which he handed to me on Friday evening when I went to fetch them after work. Earlier, he had given me one. There's nothing unique or especially creative about the card, as you can see. To me, it's the message he has for me that matters

I don't want to get a C again
2008-05-16 11:30:00
2 more days before the second term tests end, H reported to me results of a few subjects which he had just obtained from his teacher. He has a perfect score for Civic subject. It's incredulous that he can score 100%. This must be a very easy paper for students sat for this for the very first time. It's a new subject for Primary 5. Nevertheless, I am pleased with his achievement.H is confident that

Too busy with career
2008-05-16 11:25:00
I personally have a few friends and acquaintances who are still single. Due to their pursuit of rewarding careers, having a social life sometimes was not given any priority. A close friend, in fact, confided that she would still consider marriage and children even though she’s already in her mid-40’s. With such a busy lifestyle, how best to find the right partner? I wonder if they have trie

To change eyeglasses again
2008-05-16 09:10:00
It’s time to change my eyeglasses again….? The optician said I might not need to change my eyeglasses yet but I might need to two years later. I’ve been diagnosed with mild presbyopia (now you guys can guess my age..) and to add salt to the wound, I am myopic as well as astigmatic. (Is it true that if one is myopic, she cannot be presbyopic?) To have a pair of eyeglasses that can overcome al

I can finally drop him
2008-05-16 00:45:00
Five months after starting kindy, W finally gave me the green light. Yesterday, he told me that I can drop him at the gate and leave.I asked him again for his assurance. He replied, 'Yes, drop me into the drain,' while smiling sheepishly. And, true enough, this morning I dropped him at the gate. Before he got down, I asked for a kiss from him. Resisting it, he said, 'No, other people never kiss

Innocent victims of natural catastrophe
2008-05-17 01:26:00
I showed this photo to H and W last night. They were empathic towards the kids who died in the Myanmar cyclone.I told them we, in Malaysia, are lucky in a way that we are not plagued by such natural catastophe. I want them to appreciate and be thankful that they are blessed with a safe place to live. As usual, I would tell W to be a good boy, else he would not receive such blessings.W asked inquis

A short green holiday with family
2008-05-21 02:02:00
Though it's cold, W couldn't say 'No' to his favourite ice-cream. We couldn't resist stopping by the Sg Palas's Boh Tea Centre. We found a little 'green tunnel' in the compound of our hotel, poor guys are victims of this excited Mom for rare pictures. The guys were 'co-operative' to give me a very exaggerated expression to pose in front of the humongous tea plantation. Another shot before we lef

What can you do with a credit card, PC and internet access?Unlimited shopping (provided your credit limit is not burst), of course! In today’s high tech world, the conventional shopping is not the only thing. For busy, busy moms like us, we now have the option to shop online. So, where is THE place or places to shop? Are they twins?
2008-05-26 20:00:00
Both wore the same rompers. (Some clothes are really durable, it was not a deliberate action to dress them in the same clothing). It's the classic pose most parents can't wait to get their baby to do, normally before the age of 2 months, usually to demonstrate how strong their necks are. H (top picture) was one month and 27 days whereas W was one month and 23 days.

A thorny lesson at the hill
2008-05-26 09:38:00
The guys were amazed with 'oooh' and 'aahh' by these cactus we saw at the Cactus Point, Cameron Highlands. In fact, I myself have not seen most of the rare species we saw here.W couldn't resist touching the thorny plants with his little fingers, just to confirm that they are really prickly.

Is it okay to take ketotifen?
2008-05-28 00:00:00
W has been taking ketotifen (under the brand name Zaditen) since last year. It's given to him whenever he has early symptoms of cough or whenever I hear the first few dry coughs from him.W is prone to sore throat which would eventually lead to fever and coughing. The most dreaded thing is for him to be taking antibiotics along with cough, cold and wheezing syrup. Whenever he is taking these medici

Junkbin wants more
2008-05-29 00:00:00
While doing grocery shopping, W, as usual, was pestering Daddy to buy rice crackers. I managed, in the nick of time, to stop Daddy from taking a packet from the shelf. There is still some junk food at home and the last I want is to stock up more of these junks.I told W firmly that there were some at home and there was no need to buy more. W, wittily remarked in a protesting manner,'The one at h

Training kids to do house chores
2008-05-30 18:00:00
The task of washing his own school shoes and applying shoewhite is being given to him more frequently now If I ever cook, he'll always offer a helping handSomething that he loves to do - frying egg Oh, how I wish I can have more helpers! Training them is not a problem. The problem is H is a rather slow worker. He barely copes with his own 'workload' ie homework and his own schoolbag packing etc.

Strolling along with stroller
2008-05-30 10:44:00
Handling strollers was always a hassle to me. With H, it wasn't much of a problem. But, W rejected the stroller at just slightly after one. If only I knew that there is such a sit-and-stand toddler strollers available in the market, I would not think twice to get one.At least, W could stand (it's difficult to get him seated long) when he's bored of sitting. The seat can be used for the shoppin

Kids do listen and remember what we said
2008-05-30 00:00:00
One usual morning while being stuck in the morning traffic crawl on the way to H's school, I related to H about my colleague who was undergoing chemotherapy after having her reproductive organs removed due to cancer. He quipped with a question of who was going to pay for the hospital bill when I revealed the amount to him.To keep the conversation flowing, I continued with explaining that the repr

How he learns to swim
2008-06-02 15:00:00
He only had some breathing lessons from his brother. Probably Daddy motivated him to 'swim'. Then, in his own initiative, he practised and swam without needing close supervision. This is W, the bolder of the two.

An off-day spent with the kids
2008-06-02 02:34:00
I was off and took the opportunity to take the guys out. First activity lined up was a visit to the green park, the guys' favourite place. I told the guys we would not jog as Mommy is too 'lazy', they just have to play at the playground. No problem for them as they just love to play at the big playground with variety of equipment. W is already at an age big enough to be left playing with H without

Would you instal a nanny camera to spy on your nanny?
2008-06-04 03:54:00
If my young guys are under the care of a foreign maid, then a resounding YES. There are so many horror stories about foreign maids mistreating kids when their master are not at home. However, now that they are old enough to speak out, I would hesitate to use a nanny camera.I feel that it's a matter of whether the maid is reliable enough to be alone with the kid/s at home. If they are trusted, t
