Rosenthal: Will Torre be part of All-Star Game @ YS? 2008-03-08 02:14:00 From Ken Rosenthal:SURPRISE, Ariz. - This year's All-Star Game will be more a celebration of Yankee Stadium than a salute to the game's best players. Major League Baseball needs to take every possible step to acknowledge the ballpark's storied history, right down to the selection of coaches, if necessary. The two National League managers on Clint Hurdle's coaching staff should be former Yankees Lou Piniella and Willie Randolph — assuming, of course, that Randolph is still the Mets manager in July. And while the Dodgers' Joe Torre
already has indicated that he probably would not be a coach, he could still make an electrifying return to the stadium in another capacity.Tommy Lasorda coached third base as Bobby Valentine's honorary manager in 2001. Al Kaline was a special guest of Jim Leyland

A-Rod: "I Love New York" 2008-03-07 16:47:00 In a recent interview with SI.com's Jon Heyman, Alex Rodriguez discusses his love for New York, how he desperately wanted to remain a Yankee, and how he never believed he would end up signing elsewhere.Heyman mentions that six teams were all ready lined up to start the bidding war for A-Rod had he remained on the market. The teams include the Giants, Dodgers, Angels, Mets, Red Sox, and Tigers. Also in the article is a description of the negotiation process that went on between Rodriguez and the Yankees that included Rodriguez, his wife Cynthia, and her brother Constantine Scurtis. The negotiations concluded with a meeting between Rodriguez and the Steinbrenner brothers, where he professed his love for the Yankees. "This time, it was no negotiating strategy," writes Heyman. "He meant every

The two runs came on a 2-run homer by Victor Diaz in the 2nd inning. Pettitte was pleased with his start, “from the first pitch of the game everything felt good,” he said. “I really feel good about everything.”... Mariano Rivera made his first appearance of the spring and did not disappoint. He pitched one inning and struck out two batters, the other batter grounded out weakly to 2nd. His fastball had nice movement, and he was consistently throwing 93-94 MPH. “I feel good,” Rivera said. “I was able to throw all my pitches in the strike zone.” And apparently, he didn't even need his c

Should the Yankees sign a starting pitcher? 2008-03-06 23:40:00 I don't think it would be a bad idea if they did. With all the what ifs surrounding the Yankees
staff this year it couldn't hurt to have some insurance. Here's what Jon Heyman had to say on the topic:YankeesPotential need: Starting pitcher. Mike Mussina said his recent spring pasting is no cause for alarm. But scouts aren't so sure. They saw a fastball in name only, down from the high 80s to the mid or even low 80s and a continuing belief that he's nearing the end. The Yankees would be better off keeping Joba Chamberlain in the pen, which would keep their fantastic late-game combo intact. But to do that, they'll need not only youngsters Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy to come through, but also Mussina to remain viable. Or they'll need to look into the free-agent market, which is a lot better th
Yankees Lose 12-8 to the Reds 2008-03-06 15:28:00 The Yankees
got very little pitching today, by the time the game reached 7th inning it was 12-0 Reds. Chien-Ming Wang gave up 6 runs on 6 hits in 2/3 of an inning. Darrell Rasner also got knocked around, giving up 4 runs on 4 hits with 3 walks in 2 innings of work. All the runs charged to Rasner came when Edwin Encarnacion hit a 4th inning grand slam. Sean Henn didn't do much better giving up 2 runs (1 earned) on 3 hits in his inning of work. Henn did strike out two batters, though. On the bright-side, Billy Traber continues to make his case for being the lefty out of the pen, he threw a perfect inning and struck out a batter. Kyle Farnsworth, Scott Patterson, and Dan Giese, also pitched a scoreless inning each. For the first six innings the Yankees offense consisted of two doubles by Johnn

Joba talks about today's game and his contract 2008-03-05 20:10:00 Here's what he had to say about today's rough outing: “I was just trying to get the thing over the plate,” Chamberlain said. “It was just one of those days. You live and learn. It’s bound to happen.” “You learn from your successes, but you learn more from your failures.”"It's bound to happen," Chamberlain said. "The sun will come up tomorrow. I've got a lot of stuff to work on in Spring Training; that's what it's for. You're going to get your butt handed to you, and you know that. You learn more from these."Most kids Joba's age would begin to panic at the first signs of a struggle, but not Joba. When Joba was asked him about the Yankees renewing his contract
for the league minimum $390,000, he had this gem:"I don’t play the game to get paid. I play the game to enjoy

Murcer's Biopsy Negative 2008-03-05 11:34:00 From Ed Price:According to the YES Network's Michael Kay, tests undergone on Bobby Murcer's brain showed a form of necrosis, or scar tissue from radiation treatments and not another cancerous tumor. The Yankees broadcaster underwent a brain biopsy at a Houston hospital on Monday. And here's a statement from Bobby Murcer:"We received great news this morning. The biopsy revealed scar tissue. It showed no signs of cancer. We are very excited about this news. It's what we had hoped for all along. Some Mid-Week News & Notes 2008-03-05 11:05:00 -- Mariano Rivera faced hitters for the first time this spring Tuesday when he threw a 36-pitch BP session on Tuesday. He is set to make his first appearance in a game on Friday against the Astros. -- Yankees outfielder Hideki Matsui, who has been suffering some neck stiffness, said today that he fells "much better now," and is hoping to take some BP on Wednesday or Thursday. Manager Joe Girardi said he expects Matsui to make his spring training debut sometime early next week, but Matsui thinks it will be a little longer, maybe a week to ten days.-- Some of the young pitchers, including Hughes, Chamberlain, and Kennedy, have been working extra hard this spring. They've even been included in Andy Pettitte's rigorous workout routines. But don't worry, nobody is doing any HGH, at least I hope Read more:Notes

He said he "felt good," but that he's "not in pitching shape," and "wasn't able to get the ball where [he] wanted it with two strikes." Which is something you would expect in the first week or two of spring training, when a pitcher's command isn't quite there yet. He also complained that he doesn't have an out pitch at the moment, which worries me a bit, as that seemed to be his problem for much of last year -- he was unable to put hitters away.
