Putting the Bottle on Water 2008-04-02 12:01:53 Water is, to many, a popular alternative to wine.
But recent research has found that most supposed benefits to drinking water are not backed by solid evidence. Does this mean that there are no benefits to drinking water? InterWined.com says no; but it does show that science must be careful to recommend behaviour without facts, by [...] Read more:Putting
All American Meatloaf with Crème Fraîche Mashed Potatoes 2008-04-05 13:35:05
Each Friday and sometimes Saturday, InterWined.com pairs one great wine with one great meal and publishes the results along with the recipe in a little feature it likes to call ‘Blow the Bank’.
This week, ‘Blow the Bank’ introduces InterWined's All American
, a month-long celebration of some of American cuisine's greatest dishes from classic comfort foods to the unsung greats of American soulfood.
First up is All American Meatloaf
with Crème Fraîche Mashed Potatoes.
Whether its origins rest, as some varyingly contend, with the mogul invaders of China, Italian meatball-makers, German Hamburgers, British shepherd’s pie-bakers, or the recipe books of eager home-meat-grinder salesmen, there can be little doubt that the humble meatloaf is 100% American and 100% classic.

Health Beat Bullet Points: Advice You Can’t Afford to Miss 2008-04-08 10:31:11 Every Tuesday, or other days if news is embargoed, InterWined brings a bit of health news to the table. Call it well being, call it being well… call it what you will; if it impacts our lives, it gets reported. It’s a feast or famine responsibility. Some weeks there is little to speak of that [...] Read more:Health

Sicilian Sunshine 2008-04-07 07:31:58 The 2006 Donna Fugata Sedara Nero d'Avola should cost around £7. And it's everywhere. Maybe not the Sedara, but any Donna Fugata red is likely to be decent and well-priced. The wine is a pleasant violet colour, but not as deep as you may think. Most notable is the heavy blackberry and cherry presence that seems to dominate this wine, year in, year out. It's light and delicious body equals plenty of good fun. There is also a touch of vanilla, and, inexplicably, rotating hints of pine pulp. Unusual, since the wine is aged in cement tanks…how's that for thinking? 8.5 points
You Betta Eatta Feta 2008-04-09 05:14:45 Yesterday’s post provided a great deal of health and lifestyle news… but I forgot to add one other tidbit that is actually from last week. After some thought last night, I decided to include it as a sole post for today, simply because the advice could save travellers a great deal of discomfort. And, this [...] Read more:Betta
A Tempting Tempranillo…the Olympic Torch…and the best current wine web offer 2008-04-10 07:25:53 Watch the Olympic
torch make its way around the world, and one is filled with images that just don’t go together. The journey of the flame is proving more of a divider, not a uniter. Blue-suited Chinese paramilitary, without any seeming executive powers, roughing up interlopers that are oddly obsessed with extinguishing the fire. The [...] Read more:Torch

How much do you spend on bottled water? 2008-04-15 05:37:49 If you buy certain brands of water
thinking that it is cleaner or safer, experts say, you may as well be pouring money down the drain. InterWined’s thinking Coca-Cola’s Dasani and Pepsi’s Aquafina fit into this category.
“There is no guarantee that bottled water is any better than tap water. Twenty-five percent of bottled water is [...]
Bonarda Tries its Best 2008-04-14 06:05:56 At a recent lunch with colleagues in London’s financial fun zone, Canary Wharf, InterWined.com decided to put a single varietal bottle of Bonarda to the test. The way we saw it, Argentina’s popular wine should pair well with a sampling of Argentina’s popular steaks.
So we settled in to a table at Gaucho Grill, an Argentina-themed [...]
Avoiding Antioxidants 2008-04-16 04:26:33 The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced today that taking vitamins, in order to sipplement the body with antioxidants — chemicals believed to reduce oxidative stress on tissue, due to stress and natural aging — may be a bad idea. The pills aren’t very well-regulated. In fact, InterWined would note by way of comparison, [...] Read more:Antioxidants

In America 2008-04-17 04:15:28 A big hand for Sean for coming up with some great pairings for wines and America
n dishes. However, I still can’t seem to come to terms with seeing the words ‘prawn’ and ‘po-boy’ in the same sentence. InterWined reckons that it’s time to offer its own advice for picking an excellent American wine.
Finding decent American [...]
Back to Buffalo 2008-04-21 05:43:04 Did you try Friday’s buffalo wing recipe? Well, I did, but without the benefit of the suggested wine. Simply put, InterWined’s recipe inspired me to experiment.
In this case, the gamble was with the widespread 2006 Jacob’s Creek ‘Three Vines’ white, £7 from Costcutter. The Three Vines offerings by Jacob’s Creek are nothing short of the [...] Read more:Buffalo
The Way We Think, We Are 2008-04-22 06:33:38 InterWined recalls a study two yeas ago that found chronic binge drinkers held fond memories of their week-end intoxication, despite putting themselves at risk and, in some instances, becoming injured (either self-inflicted or by others).
The scientists held that this positive reinforcement of negative events compels human behaviour to detriment.
Two new studies revolve around this phenomenon [...]
2004 Maccari ‘Templaris’ Merlot 2008-04-23 03:38:04 The 2004 Maccari ‘Templaris’ Merlot
was picked up, on a whim, from an independent grocer in North London, called Woody’s, for £7. Woody’s also has a kebab shop next door, so how dedicated can they be to wine? Well, they do alright. The Templaris Merlot is kind of a rare find. As a wine, not [...]
Parmesan & Balsamic Vinegar 2008-04-24 07:18:43 Ever ordered a dish off a menu at a restaurant or café and found yourself thinking, “I could make that”?
Well, InterWined did last weekend, while sitting outside Carluccio’s, the popular Italian café chain, and trying to make the most of the sporadic sunshine that fell along Market Square near London’s Oxford Street. The dish was [...] Read more:Parmesan

Each Friday, InterWined.com pairs one great wine with one great meal and publishes the results along with the recipe in a little feature it likes to call ‘Blow the Bank’.
This week, ‘Blow the Bank’ ends its month-long celebration of some of American cuisine's greatest dishes from classic comfort foods to the unsung greats of American soulfood, with a decidedly European-take on a well-recognised transatlantic treat.
One word describes the 2003 Château de Fesles Bonnezeaux (12.5%) from the Loire Valley and available from Oddbins in the UK and Wine Chateau.com in the US (with numerous vintages available in Canada, New Zealand, and mainland Europe): smooth.
Made from 100% botrytis Chenin Blanc grapes, the Bonnezeaux screams smooth operator…not unlike the way Sade used to do on t Read more:Pomegranate

Champagne Bucks Downturn 2008-04-29 10:47:14 The recent lock in the financial markets is beginning to spill over into other sectors. A friend in private equity recently said that the damage to the average retail shop on the high street is expected to be huge.
Even some luxury markets are expected to take a hit. In an interview with Fitch Ratings, a [...] Read more:Champagne
Absinthe: ‘Green Fairy’ Boozy — but not psychedelic 2008-04-30 05:06:38 A new study may end the century-old controversy over what ingredient in absinthe caused the exotic green aperitif’s supposed mind-altering effects and toxic side-effects when consumed to excess. In the most comprehensive analysis of old bottles of original absinthe — once quaffed by the likes of van Gogh, Degas, Toulouse-Lautrec and Picasso to enhance their [...] Read more:Absinthe

The Bad Beers of Britain 2008-05-01 08:56:36 InterWined is no longer much of a beer drinker, especially in London.
A recent jaunt to New York and New Jersey represented the first trip to the United States in six years. And who could guess, that in that time, Americans have become relatively sophisticated beer drinkers?
This isn’t even to mention the superior wines by the [...] Read more:Beers

The 2006 ‘Taste the Difference’ Primitivo del Salento, from Italy and available exclusively to Sainsbury’s for approximately £5, is made by Cantina Due Palme, an Italian co-operative from Apulia known for their award- winning Primitivo. So, it doesn’t disappoint. In fact, it slightly astounds. For £5, this is one of the best wines that I’ve had in months; it’s also great for pairing with all manner of foods.

Apples Against Inflammation — and Milk Fights Fat? 2008-05-06 04:03:47 Welcome to InterWined.com’s weekly liquid refreshment health news.
We have two interesting studies. The first shows another fruit, other than grapes (and therefore wine), that may help provide powerful antioxidants for the prevention of arterial inflammation.
The second refutes the claim that dairy products help one lose weight…a claim InterWined has never heard before, but the study [...] Read more:Apples

Robbery in Rioja 2008-05-07 05:00:02 It would be irresponsible for InterWined to say that Spanish wines have not come a long way. The advent of the so-called ‘high expression’ wine styles – more fruity aggression, less oak — in the early 2000s modernised the way we view, and drink, Spanish wines.
But now the country, or at least the consumers of [...] Read more:Robbery

What’s on the Wine Menu? 2008-05-08 04:22:53 InterWined recently attended the best wedding ever. (It was the best, cause I was the best man, LOL!)…
But on the serious tip; the groom gave us the nicest, sweetest gift. It’s like a wristwatch, but for wine. And instead of telling the time, it tells you the temperature of the wine, as it sits inside [...]
Too Much Water for Children 2008-05-15 08:13:51 It’s a recurrent summer-time scenario in the pediatric emergency room and doctors from Johns Hopkins Children
’s are sounding the alarm on it: An otherwise healthy infant is brought in by panicked parents after suffering a seizure, which turns out to be caused by drinking too much water.
Pediatricians at Hopkins Children’s see at least [...]

Uruguay’s National Grape 2008-05-21 03:42:02 Wine book author and well-known potty mouth, Eric Arnold, (who now serves as Deputy Editor of Forbes.com) once described the wine grape Tannat to InterWined with one single word: “Ick.”
True, the grape is a sturdy one. Grown through SouthWest France, Argentina and widely across Uruguay

Torrontes, Never Dry 2008-05-22 07:44:05 InterWined is not a huge fan of white wines that are not dry at all.
There is something unsettling about drinking white wine without a bit of pucker.
Torrontes is a white wine grape that is considered 100% Argentinean. It is widely grown in the Calchaquies Valleys, as is the 2007 La Esperanza new to Marks & [...]
