10 Free Apps Every Mac User Should Have 2007-01-27 16:15:51
Finding freeware apps that don’t end up just sitting on your hard drive can get pretty hard. This list is a collection of some essential freeware apps for OS X that I can honestly say I would pay for if they weren’t already free. If you’re a new Mac user and/or you haven’t tried these apps yet, I highly suggest you give each of them a spin. (more…)
Technorati Trouble 2007-01-27 02:52:47 I’ve been trying to claim the new blog URL in Technorati
’s system for a few weeks now and every time I get “There was a problem claiming your blog. Please try again in a few minutes” thrown back at me. Technorati’s support has been oddly silent. Am I the only one? Read more:Trouble
OS X: Command+Tab Between Individual Windows 2007-01-26 16:30:49 One of the things I’ve missed since my switch from Windows
was the ability to Command+Tab (or Alt+Tab in Windows) between individual windows instead of applications. (Switching between two windows of Safari and Mail, for example, instead of just Safari as a group and Mail.) (more…) Read more:Individual
Google Image Search Revamp 2007-01-25 18:35:46 Google recently “dumbed down” the popular Google ImageSearch
. It’s an obvious optimization for the average user, but the new UI is surely an annoyance for the average techie. (more…) Read more:Google

iPhone = LG KE850? 2007-01-22 00:44:12 There has been some debate over the iPhone
’s similarities to the LG KE850 after Apple’s keynote. I think it’s pretty clear that the similarities between these two devices were a badly-timed coincidence. (more…)
Wii Tracker 2007-01-21 02:44:32 Wii Tracker
is a handy little site that automatically checks the availability of the Wii throughout a variety of online stores. (I finally got lucky and ordered one from Walmart thanks to the RSS feature.) Read more:Wii
DreamHost: Cheap Project Dumpsite 2007-01-19 01:24:48 In an effort to keep myself organized, I went ahead and opened up a second hosting account at DreamHost
, as opposed to throwing all of my “idle” domains on my already-cluttered Media Temple account. I would have never done this if it weren’t for the fact that a year at DreamHost costs only $19 with the promo code 9999. (This isn’t an affiliate code as the majority of DreamHost codes are, so DreamHost is the only one making money off of this code.)
Yes, I’m aware that DreamHost sucks. You get what you pay for. But the deal is just what I’m looking for — a cheap place to keep everything I don’t want to (or need to) look at every time I open Transmit. Read more:Project

Several Improvements in Parallels 3120 2007-01-17 19:37:49 I’ve never been the biggest fan of Parallels
Desktop for Mac. There was always a big reason not to use it, like memory leaks, speed hogs, faulty network drivers, etc. I finally gave in and installed the most recent RC build to finally give Vista a much-overdue spin. And I have to say, build 3120 is pretty darn cool. (more…)
Twitter + Twitterrific = Constant Away Messages 2007-01-16 21:32:58 Twitter is a nifty little site that allows you to tell everyone on the net what you’re doing and when. The concept is simple–type what you’re doing in the box and press Update. The result is a nice, simple page with an archive of your activities. (You can also do some neat things like include your current status on your own website, like I’m doing in my sidebar.) (more…) Read more:Constant

Digg Meets Grid-Server 2007-01-29 00:16:01
I used up my 15 minutes of Digg
fame today when my article on OS X freeware reached the homepage. Aside from the exciting traffic spike (over 30,000 uniques today), I was more excited to see how Media Temple’s Grid-Server hosting would hold up under the pressure. (more…)
Mint 2.0 Released 2007-01-29 12:31:37 The incredibly popular Mint stats app was given a huge upgrade today. Mint 2.0 is now available for the same price as it has been — $30 (or $19 to upgrade from Mint 1.x). I’ll be upgrading later today when I can put a quick review and some screenshots up. In the meantime, Designologue.com has a live demo of the new version.

Flickr To Begin Forcing Yahoo! Logins 2007-01-31 02:20:07 Looks like Yahoo
! has decided to make the Flickr
deal official. On March 15, “old skool” Flickr users (including myself) will no longer be able to login with their email addresses. Instead, a Yahoo! login will be required. Not the biggest deal, but some really old skool members are certainly getting worked up. (more…) Read more:Forcing
Colored iPod Shuffles Introduced 2007-02-01 00:43:45
Apple quietly updated the iPod
shuffle with new colors to match the iPod nano (with the addition of orange). Surprisingly, I’ve only seen a few of the new shuffles around school, while I’ve seen several of the newer iPod nanos (received as a gift for the holidays, I’m assuming). I’d be very interested to know how many of the iPods sold are shuffles — from what I’ve seen I’d be surprised if they were even somewhat popular. Read more:Colored
Correo: Beautified Thunderbird for OS X 2007-02-01 00:20:18 Despite the fact that Firefox and Thunderbird
are two of the most powerful apps geeks know of, many Mac users are turned away from Mozilla software due to the lack of the polished Cocoa design. Correo combines two Mozilla projects — Camino, the Cocoa “port” of Firefox, and Thunderbird itself — to make a much more appealing email client.

Super Bowl Commercials on AOL 2007-02-04 22:32:29 Looks like AOL will be streaming today’s Super

Gmail Mail Fetcher: Auto-POP3 Mail Retriever 2007-02-07 04:00:59 My Gmail
account was just updated with the Mail Fetcher feature — a tool that got a lot of publicity a few months ago when only very few users received the functionality. I’m assuming Google has decided to give the functionality to a much larger Gmail audience, or I’ve moved up on the Gmail beta list. (more…) Read more:Retriever
MapWii.com: Find Wii Neighbors 2007-02-08 03:27:19 I’ve been having a whole lot of fun with the Wii

WordPress How To: AdSense After First Post 2007-02-11 05:58:53 One of the hardest aspects of designing a site is the placement of non-obtrusive ads. I’ve found that placing ads after the first blog post on the homepage is the most ideal place for ads if you don’t have room on the sidebar. Luckily, placing your ad code after the first post is pretty easy with WordPress. (more…) Read more:First

Peekvid Returns! 2007-02-16 01:22:32 After a little over a week of “closed beta,” Peekvid
seems to have resolved its troubles (probably legal) and has reopened with a refined UI and a nice disclaimer on the bottom:
Peekvid does not contain any content on its site, but is merely an index of available links on the Internet. Peekvid is committed to an industry solution that will provide a mechanism to compensate artists that create the work you enjoy watching. Peekvid would like to be part of the long term solution. Yahoo! Pipes: Friendly Data Manipulation 2007-02-17 22:48:57 Pipes is a new Yahoo
