Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland) and Helen Mirren (The Queen) were the expected winners for Best Actor and Actress, while Alan Arkin (Little Miss Sunshine) and Jennifer Hudson (Dreamgirls) won the Supporting honors; Pan’s Labyrinth won three awards (though, surprisingly, not Best Foreign Language Film). Single-lens reflex (SLR) cameras 2007-03-01 01:45:22 About
The single-lens reflex (SLR) is a type of camera that uses a movable mirror placed between the lens and the film to project the image seen through the lens to a matte focusing screen. Most SLRs use a roof pentaprism or pentamirror to observe the image via an eyepiece, but there are also other finder arrangements, such as the waist-level finder or porro prisms.
Cross-section view of SLR systemThe shutter in almost all contemporary SLRs sits just in front of the focal plane. If it does not, some other mechanism is required to ensure that no light reaches the film between exposures. For example, the Hasselblad 500C camera uses an auxiliary shutter blind in addition to its in-lens leaf shutter.
The cross-section (side-view) of the optical components of an SLR shows how the light passes through the lens assembly (1), is reflected by the mirror (2) and is projected on the matte focusing screen (5). Via a condensing lens (6) and internal reflections in the roof pentaprism (7) the image
Tahiti - everything you need to know 2007-03-01 01:18:03 Maeva! Welcome!
Tahiti
– Moorea – Bora Bora – island names that evoke a wonderful state of mind, seducing honeymooners, romantics, adventurers, and vacationers looking for escape.
Here, around these South Seas isles, a romantic sunset sea sends giant curls of turquoise breaking onto the colorful reefs that protect the tranquil lagoons of warm, bright-emerald waters and white coral-sand beaches.
Closer Than You Think
Easier to travel to than you might imagine, Tahiti’s Faa’a Airport is under 8 hours by air from Los Angeles LAX airport, with daily nonstop flights and starting in the summer of 2005 – 3 non-stop flights a week from New York’s JFK airport.
As far south of the equator as Hawaii is north, Tahiti is halfway between California and Australia, on the same side of the International Date Line as North America, and in the same time zone as Hawaii - (only three hours behind California April-October and two hours behind California November-March).

Adobe to launch Apollo beta later this month 2007-03-03 13:35:14 Adobe Systems Inc. later
this month plans to launch the beta of a new runtime that will allow rich Web-based applications to run offline, technology that could threaten the popularity of programming platforms such as Java and Microsoft Corp.’s .NET.
The release of a developer preview of the runtime, dubbed Apollo
, will coincide roughly with an ApolloCamp event Adobe will hold in San Francisco on March 16, according to sources familiar with the company’s plans. ApolloCamp will give developers a chance to kick the tires of the new runtime.
Apollo delivers on the promise of technology Macromedia originally introduced in 2003 called Macromedia Central. Adobe purchased Macromedia in December 2005. Macromedia Central was an environment that allowed Flash-based applications to run offline so they didn’t need to make continuous calls to servers on the back end, allowing them to run more quickly and efficiently.

YouTube Strikes a Deal with the BBC 2007-03-05 13:15:36 In a move that seems to run contrary to recent trends, YouTube
has
actually come to an agreement with a major content provider. The
BBC announced on Friday that it has struck a deal with the popular
video-sharing site that will see the UK based broadcasting company
share in advertising revenue generated by YouTube traffic.
After highly publicized breakdowns in negotiations with CBS and
Viacom, it looks like Google and YouTube have finally managed to
court a suitor into the video-sharing fold, avoiding any potential
copyright snares that might ensue with current BBC content on the
site.
The BBC’s Tim Weber has more on the particulars of the agreement:
“One of the BBC’s two entertainment channels will be a “public
service” proposition, featuring no advertising.”
“It will show clips like trailers and short features that add
value - for example, video diaries of David Tennant showing
viewers around the set of Dr Who or BBC correspondent Clive Myr Read more:Strikes
Yahoo Panama: Pros and Cons 2007-03-07 00:20:02 Near the end of 2006 Yahoo
officially unveiled the new back end for Yahoo Marketing Solutions, widely referred to as the ‘Panama
’ Update. Since then they have been slowly allowing the upgrading of accounts from the old into the new system. While not everyone has had a chance to have their accounts switched over, it is expected that all will be upgraded by the end of this quarter.
After several months of waiting, this new backend is a welcomed change as Yahoo finally moves into the future but as with any new system, it is not without its pros and cons.
New System Pros
The new system is certainly a great improvement over the old. While adjusting to a new interface and ranking algorithm may take a little time for advertisers, the end result will present more relevant ads to the searchers, which will ultimately mean a higher quality of visitor and should provide a better bang for one’s buck.
> Previously you were stuck with only one live ad for any given phrase; now you can create mu

Adobe Creative Suite 3 To Be Announced March 27 2007-03-07 21:04:26 The release will reveal the features of what is being called “the largest software release in Adobe
’s 25 year history.”
It’s hard to find a visual creative who doesn’t rely on one or more of the applications within Adobe’s cross-platform Creative Suite
. Anticipation of the upcoming CS3 version has been building for some time, in part due to the extended open beta of Photoshop CS3. There are also many users who are waiting for the Suite’s ability to run on Intel-based Macs, and will couple that with an Apple hardware upgrade.
There have a been a few recent hints about the March
27 announcement date, which was first floated last month by a financial analyst. A teaser video for the upcoming release (shown at right) was later posted on YouTube, while a related promotional mini-site was create by Adobe’s UK wing. The launch will take place at an event in New York City, which will be webcast live at 3:30 PM EST, during which the application fea Read more:Adobe Creative Suite

5 Ways - You Haven’t Even Thought Of - To Kill Trees 2007-03-07 19:50:14 1) Use the Internet.
The Internet is really big. I have only seen about half of it. Anything so big cannot be good for trees. Trees
are small in comparison to the Internet.
Most of you are probably convinced by now that using the Internet kills trees. However, for those sceptics out there, I will produce more evidence.
Where do they make the internet? Silicon Valley. Where do they get the silicon? Other places that aren’t Silicon Valley. What do they use to ship all of this silicon? Trucks.
Truck fumes kill trees, thus the internet kills trees.
2) Talk about what happened on Jay Leno last night.
No, Jay’s chin doesn’t kill trees. But, when you talk about what Jay Leno said, you are killing trees. Why?
Because, you aren’t talking about tacos. And almost everyone knows that the subject of tacos is the only thing that can be talked about that doesn’t kill trees.
When was the last time you talked about tacos? When you were hungry. What did you do after you tal Read more:Haven

Terabyte CDs In the Works At Harvard Labs 2007-03-08 23:26:48 While the prospect of soon-to-be-standard 50GB Blu-ray discs is impressive, researchers at Harvard
University are working on a process that could cram as much as 3,000 gigabytes onto a single CD.
The key innovation is a nano antenna, which, by attaching to a commercial optical disc laser, can focus the, laser?s surface area from 830 nanometers down to just 40.
As smaller laser sizes mean significantly larger amounts of data per square inch, discs produced by the process could contain as much as sixty times more data than even the highest capacity products available today. According to Federico Capasso, head of the project and Professor of applied physics at Harvard:
“You’d be able to pack more than three terabytes [3,000 gigabytes] worth of data onto something the size of a CD.”
Currently it?s impossible to cram that much data into optical storage media because industry standard lasers are capable of focusing light to only half of their wavelengths. Capasso and his te Read more:Terabyte

Samsung - 8 GB flash chip for mobile phones 2007-03-12 19:22:50 Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. has begun shipping samples of an 8 G-byte flash memory chip, enough to store up to 2,000 songs on a mobile phone, the company said on Monday.
It expects to begin mass producing the moviNAND chip, which it called the highest-capacity embedded flash memory device developed so far, by the end of the year.
Samsung’s moviNAND line combines flash memory and firmware in an embedded chip for mobile phones and other portable devices. The chips use the widely-used MMC (multimedia card) interface, allowing manufacturers to integrate them into devices faster and more cheaply, Samsung said.
The MMC also allows for fast data transfers. The new chip can process 52 M-bytes of data per second, double the performance of Samsung’s 4 G-byte chip, the company said.
Samsung started producing 1 G-byte and 2 G-bytes moviNAND chips last September. It expects worldwide sales of the chips to reach US$4 billion [b] by 2010, it said.
NAND flash memory chips are small, fast Read more:Samsung

QuarkXPress doesn’t run on Windows Vista 2007-03-16 00:17:44 QuarkXPress users updating to WindowsVista
have been surprised to find that the current version simply won’t run, in contrast to the pre-Vista version of competing publication application Adobe InDesign. Quark has now announced that a free update that allows XPress to run on Vista will be available for download on its site within the next 30 days.
According to Terry Welty, Quark Senior Vice President of Corporate Marketing, “Customers will benefit from the combined user interface enhancements of both products such as the ability to drag and drop images from the Windows Photo Gallery directly into QuarkXPress 7. In addition, users with Windows Vista
will be able to take advantage of the unique new features of QuarkXPress 7 such as picture effects and Composition Zones.”
QuarkAlliance developers are also apparently testing their XTensions software for QuarkXPress 7 on Windows Vista.
