Wikipedia "might disappear" ? 2007-02-13 22:54:10 Florence Devouard, chairwoman of the Wikimedia Foundation, has touched off a tempest with her suggestion in a talk at the Lift07 conference that Wikipedia
has funding for only another quarter and “might disappear
” if donations don’t pick up.
According to this post by media producer Philippe Mottaz, Devouard told the audience: “At this point, Wikipedia has the financial resources to run its servers for about 3 to 4 months. If we do not find additional funding, it is not impossible that Wikipedia might disappear.”
Here is a copy of the official Wikimedia budget for the last quarter of the 2005 calendar year. Keep in mind that although this copy dates from 2005, the costs of running Wikipedia have rised in time.

A man peed his way out of an avalanche 2007-02-15 00:39:22 This is actually a true story.
A Slovak man trapped in his car under an avalanche freed himself by drinking 60 bottles of beer and urinating on the snow to melt it.
Rescue teams found Richard Kral drunk and staggering along a mountain path four days after his Audi car was buried in the Slovak Tatra mountains.
He told them that after the avalanche, he had opened his car window and tried to dig his way out.
But as he dug with his hands, he realised the snow would fill his car before he managed to break through.
He had 60 half-litre bottles of beer in his car as he was going on holiday, and after cracking one open to think about the problem he realised he could urinate on the snow to melt it, local media reported.
He said: “I was scooping the snow from above me and packing it down below the window, and then I peed on it to melt it. It was hard and now my kidneys and liver hurt. But I’m glad the beer I took on holiday turned out to be useful and I managed to get out of there.

There are primarily six major islands to visit in Hawaii: Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Maui, and Hawaii's Big island. You'll find each island has its own distinct personality and offers its own adventures, activities, and sightseeing opportunities. We invite you to explore all of Hawaii to find the unique island experience for you.

Yahoo Mail gains IM integration 2007-02-17 22:18:11 Yahoo Inc. will soon start to fulfill a promise it made to users several months ago to tie its new Web mail service with its instant messaging application.
Starting Monday and continuing over the coming months, Yahoo will activate this feature for users of the new version of Yahoo Mail
, which is in beta, or test, phase but available to all users of the service.
Yahoo officials demonstrated the integration
of the Yahoo Mail beta with Yahoo Messenger in November at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco. The audience reacted enthusiastically to the plan. The new feature alerts Yahoo Mail beta users if their contacts are logged on to Yahoo Messenger and gives them the option of starting a text chat session from within the mail interface. If the user is composing an e-mail message but wants to chat instead, Yahoo Mail can grab the text and paste it into the text chat window. Likewise, the chat session can be automatically imported to an e-mail message form.

Gmail finally opens to all 2007-02-17 22:13:57 Google Inc. dropped the invitation-only restriction for its Gmail
e-mail service on Wednesday, one of its linchpin applications complementing its popular search engine.
Â
Google launched Gmail in April 2004, and the company has been steadily integrating new features, but the service is still labeled a beta release. It includes Google Talk, an instant messaging program, and a calendar, plus other features such as spam filtering.
Â
Gmail users previously had to pass along invitations to others so they could register for the service.
Â
The company has positioned Gmail as a gateway to other online offerings by displaying links to its Picasa photo sharing service and Docs and Spreadsheets, a word processing and spreadsheet application.
Â
Google has concentrated on building its infrastructure for its service-based offerings. As of Wednesday, Gmail offered users about 2.8G bytes of storage space for e-mail, one of the more generous limits for free services.

PhotoshopCAFE - Seventh Annual Design Contest 2007-02-17 21:45:48 Colin Smith, founder of PhotoshopCAFE.com, one of the best known web sites dedicated to Photoshop, has announced the site’s seventh annual design contest, which, as with previous iterations, has a theme specifically related to Photoshop itself. Last year, for example, the challenge was to design the front of a cereal box, which resulted in such winning entries as Linked Layers: Fortified With Styles; Crusty Tools; and HistoGrams: Begin Your Day With Balance.
This year’s theme is a billboard dedicated to Photoshop, set in the past or in the future. In Colin’s words, “Past and Future means that it can be yesterday or tomorrow, but leaves it open to cool period pieces, and crafty wording and usage of imagery.” The prizes raise up to 12000$. Entries must be posted before March 1, 2007.
More information is available on the PhotoshopCAFE.com site.

51GB HD DVD-ROM Disc 2007-02-18 15:59:35 Toshiba has developed a triple-layer HD DVD-ROM (read only) disc with a capacity of 51 gigabytes. The new disc can store up to 7 hours of high-definition video and adds an extended capacity, high-end option to the already extensive line-up of HD DVD-ROM discs. Toshiba aims to secure approval of the new disc by the DVD Forum within this year.
The new ROM disc has a three-layer structure, with each layer storing 17GB of data. The advances capacity over current ROM discs, which hold 15GB of data in each layer of a single-sided disc. Continued improvement in disc mastering technology has achieved further minimization in the recording pit, supporting a further boost in capacity to 17GB in single layer and a full 51GB on a single-sided triple-layer disc. Toshiba has confirmed the disc structure and its successful operation.
The new disc shares the same disc structure as standard DVD and previously announced HD DVD formats: two 0.6-mm thick discs bonded back-to-back. This time-tested physical
Toshiba HD DVD-R Laptop 2007-02-18 15:55:44 In late February in Japan, Toshiba
will begin selling its first laptop PC in the world with support for the write-once HD DVD-R optical disc format. The G30/97A will be an upgrade of existing models of Toshiba’s hefty Qosmio G30 entertainment laptop. The computer is based on an Intel Corp. 2GHz Core 2 Duo processor and has a 17-inch wide-screen display with 1,920 x 1,280 pixel resolution, which means it can show high-definition images from HD DVD movie discs. The 4.8-kg machine also features a 320G-byte hard-disk drive, digital TV tuner and HDMI (high definition multimedia interface) output. Toshiba hasn’t announced a price for the computer, which will run the Windows Vista Home Premium operating system. International launch plans were not announced.

Microsoft's YouTube rival in public beta 2007-02-18 10:37:53 Microsoft Corp. has unveiled a public beta of its MSN Soapbox video-upload service, its competitor to Google Inc.’s popular YouTube
service.
The service, which Microsoft unveiled last September, has been available to beta testers only by invitation for several months. But now anyone can test out the service by going to this Web site, reports the the LiveSide blog, which tracks Microsoft’s Windows Live Internet services.
Like YouTube, Soapbox allows users not only to upload videos to the Web in almost any digital video format, but also to tag and categorize them so other users can find them. The service also lets users watch videos and browse for new ones simultaneously on the same screen, something that differentiates it from YouTube, Microsoft has said.
Microsoft has been assembling a raft of Web-based services to compete with Google and Yahoo Inc. since November 2005, when Chief Architect Ray Ozzie unveiled the company’s Live services initiative. The company has sai Read more:Microsoft

Becoming The Spider : Next Generation SEO Tactics 2007-02-21 10:47:19 Just when you believed you had all your SEO
tactics figured out, the web goes and changes on you. Not just the rules of the game but it takes the whole web platform right out from under your feet and changes it. What’s a poor webmaster to do?
Web 2.0 changes the whole ballgame. It not only places the Internet user squarely in the middle of things, but it gives that user the means and power to create and manipulate data. Web 2.0 dramatically changes how we view and use the web. Actually, in many respects, it creates a whole new Internet.
What Is Web 2.0?
Just what exactly is Web 2.0? What does it mean? Is there a precise definition that all webmasters can get their heads around and understand? Not really, many believe Web 2.0 is just another one of those contrived buzzwords, signifying mostly marketing hype!
However, perhaps the simple definition can be found in the word “you”! Time magazine probably summed it up best by making reference to the “you” in use Read more:Becoming

Ogling big breasts has health benefits 2007-02-22 11:42:54 Well, men … it’s official. A recent study proves that men who look at breasts and beautiful faces can extend their life by 4-5 years. Apparently, peeking for 10 minutes a day is equivalent to spending 30 minutes at the gym. This comes to confirm what we men knew all along.
Dr. Karen Weatherby, who carried out the German study, wrote in The New England Journal of Medicine : “Just 10 minutes of staring at the charms of a well-endowed female is roughly equivalent to a 30-minute aerobics workout. Sexual excitement gets the heart pumping and improves blood circulation. There is no question that gazing at breasts makes men healthier. Our study indicates that engaging in this activity a few minutes daily cuts the risk of a stroke and heart attack in half. We believe that by doing so consistently, the average man can extend his life 4 to 5 years.”
The study explains the results :
