Homeland Security Buckling Under Pressure
2008-03-07 06:34:00
The US Department of Homeland Security is not meeting its goals. If yesterday's explosion in Times Square does not convince you, then maybe this latest news story will. But is it really that much of a stretch? Do you feel safer today America? I don't know about the rest of you but I think nothing has changed since 9/11 except everyone is scared, the government has been spying on us and oil spirals ever higher.More of the same stumbling and bumbling through history, answers right in front of our faces yet we are paralyzed by a corrupt government full of impotent bureaucrats more worried about job security than saving the nation. Huge empty promises from the Bush administration is nothing new - take a look at every State of the Union since 2000- but the one thing you would think his cronies

Bush Economy Keeps Food Banks Busy
2008-03-06 06:56:00
Here is the other face of the Bush Economy, one that relies on charity to get by, one that can buy less food everyday the dollar drops. This picture is from Florida, Jeb's former state, now imagine a freezing winter up North and heating oil at all-time highs - now do you choose to eat or stay warm?So what is the answer for these people? Well if they were able to find enough work this past year then they will get Bush's vaunted rebate, keeping them out of the gutter for a couple of weeks. But what of those that are unemployed or under-employed? What about the partially disabled too hurt to work but too healthy to collect, or those whose unemployment benefits already ran out (and no longer show up in job figures)?Take my word for it - you are going to see more of this if nothing is done abou

Will War Erupt in South America?
2008-03-05 07:07:00
Tensions continue to mount in the three way stand-off between Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela over Colombia's raid to kill FARC leader Raul Reyes. Things are starting to get real messy and if the sabre-rattling does not stop, we may have a real war in South America . I've been called a commie in the past, and while that is not too far a stretch since I do have some Socialist leanings. However I'm not a supporter of the FARC. I am not a proponent of Marxism-Leninism as the FARC claim to be - mainly because of the changes to the movement Lenin made to make Communism work in Imperial Russia. The FARC are thugs holding onto a out-moded philosophy that kidnap and kill to further their ends - now how does that help the workers? Unless the FARC only count themselves among the Proletariat, I see th

Warren Buffet Speaks, Will Wall Street Listen?
2008-03-04 07:39:00
Listen up all you nitwits who think the everything is fine as long as the Dow is up for the week. When Warren Buffet speaks, the real money experts listen - he is the financial barometer that really steers Wall Street . All the young hotshots out there fresh off getting your Series 7 certificate probably scoff and don't even bother to get off their cell phones to hear what the Wizard of Omaha has to say. There is nothing more dangerous than a young trader/finance "expert" - while they think their shit don't stink, their bosses, you know the guys who make the BIG BUCKS, listen to every word coming from the hallowed mouth of Mr. Buffet. So, what does Warren think? We're in a recession!Of course, you already knew that by how little you have left from your paycheck after heating your home, buyin

A Head for A Head in Saudi Arabia
2008-03-03 07:05:00
What a messed up story this is, how can anyone kill let alone behead a toddler? In a crowded supermarket no less! This has nothing to do with the peculiarities of Saudi or Arab culture, this guy is just plain nuts. And because of the heinous nature of this crime, I really don't mind that the price for beheading in the Kingdom, is beheading. In the sun bleached lands of Saudi Arabia these measures, reminiscent of the Code of Hammurabi can be as harsh as the land they live in. Hey it may be rough, unfair, unbending and sometimes oppressive, but when the guy deserves it - there is no justice like desert justice!

Democracy Is an Illusion The corporate financing of political campaigns is a capital investment in the status quo to benefit the wealthy and marginalizes those with neither wealth nor property. That's why substantive change in America is rarely achieved through the vote.

Why Is The Arab World So Polluted?
2008-03-01 07:17:00
One of the starkest memories I have of visiting Morocco was how dirty everything was, especially by the ocean and the border crossings with Spanish Cueta. As I was leaving the country I recall looking back over the fence and seeing what looked like a mountain of dirty diapers slowly crumbling into the sea. And that was not all, there seemed to be trash everywhere. At the time I thought it was only Morocco, being a third-world country that was dirty, however I have since learned that much of the Arab World is needlessly strewn with garbage. This article about the ancient city of Sidon being overwhelmed by a mountain of trash should sound some alarms, but it won't.To put it into perspective my visit to Jamaica, another third-world country saw a very resourceful people recycle anything they c

Bush Fiddles As US Dollar Burns
2008-02-29 07:29:00
Readers will already know what I feel about Bush's economic prowess, and the fact that he is still in denial about recession, stagnation and inflation or Stagflation as the cheerleaders on CNN now call it. I even heard a right-wind talk radio shill talk about how we have had continued economic growth under Bush - as a dig to the Clintons. I'm sure this asshole has his kid in one of those soccer leagues where every kid gets a trophy for trying.Look a little closer Bush fans, how does that tiny growth compare with a dollar that keeps on sinking, a huge trade deficit to China, and the continuous rise of food costs and how about this little gem:As in previous years, the budget relies on omissionsand optimistic assumptions that have theeffect of understating the size of the fiscalproblems it cr

Ahmadinejad: We're Number One!
2008-02-28 05:49:00
I used to think that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was crazy like a fox, acting unstable to get what he wants from the West. Well, after reading this article now I think he's just plain nuts. If saying Iran is the "number one power in the world" isn't delusional, then I better go get a dictionary.I wonder what average Iranians think about these speeches and if they connect his words and actions to the new round of UN sanctions that are going to be enforced. I really don't know how much exposure Iranians have to the rest of the world these days or if they just consider their loony leader as the Persian equivalent of George Bush - another guy in power that does things his own way.Iran is not a number one power by any stretch, but I don't think they are a pushover either. It is the home of a proud and

Arctic SeedBank Online - Take That Monsanto
2008-02-26 08:02:00
In a blow to evil corporations that want to own the patents for the foods you eat, the Svalbard SeedBank is ready to go. So if anyone of us survives the self-destruction of our species they will be able to start society over like Noah with over 250,000 seed samples. The only problem - how the hell do you get to Svalbard after society collapses? And once you are there, how are you going to get past the armored polar bears?(sorry couldn't resist)The article below has some examples of how genetic biodiversity in our seed stock is ebbing. But it does not mention the impact Genetically modified foods (GM) are having on seed diversity, the farmers forced to grow them or the public that has to eat them. GM Plants love to cross-pollinate, forcing farmers to eradicate their own seed stock or face M

Little Liechtenstein in Big Trouble
2008-02-25 07:15:00
As long as humanity has had taxes there has been tax evasion and for wealthy Europeans the microstate of Liechtenstein has been happy to hide their money for centuries. To be honest I figure the only reason this postage stamp of a Principality still exists in modern Europe is as a tax-haven for the Uber-rich. New Money thinks having a Swiss bank account is something to brag about, but the Old Money of Europe knows better, puts their money in Liechtenstein and does not say a word.Unfortunately for them, somebody else leaked names recently and now this tiny country with more companies than people faces a huge tax scandal linked to the private bank of the Prince: LGT Bank. Depending upon where you live in the world, you might not hear about this on the local news, but this is only going to ge

Bearded, Dateless Men Gather in Brighton
2008-02-23 08:46:00
Some girls like guys with beards, like my wife thank God. But When you hear a girl say that they like a guy with a beard they usually are not talking about the guys that gathered at Brighton in the UK for the recent World Beard and Moustache Championship. Either these guys were married before deciding to imitate General Ambrose Burnsides or Chester A. Arthur, or they have taken up celibacy full time. Hey, I got nothing but respect for my bearded brethren, especially after keeping the beard completely untrimmed during the 18-1 season of the New England Patriots- those things get real itchy. Not to mention that with my dirty Belichick hoddie on I was starting to look like Rasputin. To anyone that has spent some time in Bavaria guzzling lager, it's no surprise that those "evil" Germans are the

China's Nouveau Riche
2008-02-21 07:34:00
It has been said that money changes everything, and that is no more true than in China . Yes they are still Communist, but unlike the old Soviet Model that followed Stalin's Five-Year Plans, China and it's people are adapting socialism to fit in a capitalist world - less submarines and more consumer goods. And the "haves" in this new China could not be happier with the availability of brand-name luxury goods.I find it similar to Lenin's plan called the New Economic Policy or NEP, which was created to cope with the fact that the Communist Revolution did not spread into Europe in the wake of WWI. With Lenin's death and the success of the first Five-Year Plan, Stalin scrapped the NEP. The rest you can say is history.China apparently has learned from this mistake and many of it's people are pro

Bhutto Topples Musharraf From Beyond The Grave
2008-02-19 07:16:00
For the first time in Pakistan's history, a ruling government has been voted out. Those who planned the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, whoever they are affiliated with, had their dreams dashed as the killing of the former Prime Minister solidified the support for her PPP (Pakistan Peoples Party) against the ruling Muslim League-Q Party. No matter what side of the argument you are on, never underestimate the power of Martyrdom. As much as Musharraf was starting to cut a good figure in the West, with book deals and appearing on US talk shows, I have a feeling that Pakistan's anti-terror efforts will get a huge boost. This could be a major turning point for Pakistan's history if things go right and could be a major stabilizer in the region. With any luck the new government could also help se

What the hell are they feeding us?
2008-02-18 08:09:00
While this enormous beef recall won't turn me vegetarian, I can understand why some choose not to eat meat. They are feeding us Down Cattle, putting in the school lunches and we wonder why American kids are getting dumber and fatter - You are what you eat!Of course my two dozen or so loyal readers know the reason behind all this: Profit. This isn't some sinister plan cooked up by The Joker or another supervillain. No, these kinds of things are planned by fat, rich white guys in a board room that don't want to see their bottom line change. They try to squeeze every last dollar out of these animals, like in Europe where they started the practice of feeding cows animal byproducts, effectively turning herbivores into cannibals since most of these "byproducts" came from cattle. We all know what

Global Warming: Evidence is in the Wine
2008-02-16 09:14:00
No I'm not an environmentalist. Like George Carlin I believe the planet is fine and life will march on no matter what we as humans can do to it. However if we as a species have any desire to stick around, it is in our best interest to keep the place suitable for human life. In my opinion part of the criteria for the suitability of Earth is an abundant supply of wine. Without it, I'd kill the whole lot of 'ya!Global Warming is starting to take its toll on the wine grape harvest, just a few degrees change in temperature turns Brunello into Bum Wine. But it's not up to me, it's up to the bastards that own everything and think that buying "carbon credits" actually offsets anything. So if wild weather, wild fires and Al Gore's Movie don't get the rich to notice global warming, maybe they will n

Wiretapping: Exchange of Freedom for Security
2008-02-15 07:31:00
I used to work at a prominent brokerage house next to a girl that grew up in the old GDR - that's East Germany to you and me. As a little girl in the early 1980's her family was able to get out and escape to the West. She told me that before their escape her uncle and a few other relatives were rounded up by the Secret Police known as the Stasi (Ministerium für Staatssicherheit). She never saw most of them again. So how were these freedom-loving people caught while planning their family's escape? Wiretapping and neighbors spying on neighbors. So in what direction does the United States go with it's Wiretapping Law? The old GDR and the other Eastern Bloc countries spied on their citizens on the premise of security. Sound familiar? The US and especially George Bush claim that these tools are

Cutting Jobs: How CEO's Stay Successful
2008-02-13 07:00:00
With the latest news of job cuts in America, it is pretty obvious how CEO's deal with economic slowdown: They fire people. Now, do you still want a CEO for President? You can't fire citizens when things go bad and that is their biggest ace in the hole when running a company. "Oh no, the company can't afford to pay me my 300 grand? Well we better cut a couple thousand jobs." Notice how taking a pay cut is never in their business plan. And here is where the numbers get fudged. When all these recently laid-off and fired people file for unemployment the unemployment rate in America rises. When these people stay on unemployment past the 29 weeks or so, they no longer get a check, and therefore no longer show up in unemployment figures and then the numbers drop. Meanwhile the talking heads on TV

Bush's House of Cards Economy
2008-02-12 08:16:00
Watch on the video when George Bush states our economy is "Structurally Sound". Is he fooling anybody? Wait let me rephrase that: Is he fooling anybody that does not live in a McMansion?I can't believe people still think this guy is smart. The rich half of the country does not care because they can absorb the higher gas and home heating prices, they already pay a premium for their so-called organic foods at high-end supermarkets. And their portfolios? They have brokers to keep making them money in a bad economy. What pisses me off the most is the attitude the Bush people have "well if you were smart then you wouldn't be struggling". These assholes think the only criterion separating rich and poor is intelligence. Well in my experience working for brokerage houses and banks I have met many m

Israel Aims Low in 2008
2008-02-11 07:15:00
What more can be said of this brief news story? Israel is not planning for any peace deals with the Palestinians in 2008 and that is a sad, sad admission. How can a statement like this do anything but make things worse? When the biggest bully in the region says flat out "peace? well maybe next year" how is that going to stop the rocket attacks or bombings? Here's how: It won't, And that is just fine with the Israeli Government, who apparently believe that peace in the region does not favor them. After all if there is no more fighting then it's hard to justify the $1billion Israel gets from the US every year. Nor does it foster the huge arms deals that Israel has with countries in Europe as well as the Ministry of Defense deals with China. If you ask me this is war profiteering - the "haves"
