Kenya Update: Hope on the Horizon 2008-02-09 06:32:00 This is the first potentially positive move I have seen so far from the two Kenya
n factions. No deals yet but at least they are talking and there is word of a power sharing situation that may stop the killing at last. Read more:Update
China Using Wind To Help Fuel Growth 2008-02-08 08:58:00 As China
continues to grow at a phenomenal rate I was glad to see that they are seriously exploring alternatives to oil and coal. China is both making and using more petroleum products than ever, so it is nice to hear that they do have a plan for wind power. However we have to remember that China wants to grow fast and has been going full bore and not looking back. This story on developing wind power in China gives some hope that China will not be reduced to a complete ecological disaster in the race to fulfill its potential. But they still have a long way to go... Read more:Growth
Is This Why Nobody Reads AngryJed? 2008-03-12 07:35:00 Well, I'm not really covering the US Presidential race as much anymore because I can't compete with the blogs that people actually read. However Angryjed still covers a lot of politics, and according to this survey, maybe that's why I'm having such a hard time getting readers. Could it be that nobody is really interested in my rants? Or maybe I'm not ranting enough?I think blogging is fun, besides a great way of venting my frustration - but if nobody reads it, why bother? I might as well just go out into the woods and yell, it would serve the same purpose and plus, I would get some exercise. Read more:Nobody

A Three Trillion Dollar War of Futility 2008-03-11 13:09:00 Hey I don't care what the Pentagon says, we've already spent over $700 billion in Iraq and Afghanistan with no signs of stopping. And now Joseph Stiglitz's new book is saying we could reach over $3 TRILLION by the end of it all.And what has happened during the time that all this money has been spent? Iraq is still very much a quagmire, Bin Laden is still out there, Afghanistan is still fighting the Taliban, Pakistan is wracked with political turmoil and the US and World Economies have been struggling with insanely priced oil. I've said it before: I don't feel any safer, do You?Even if we just think about the amount that has already been spent - over $700 billion. Do you think health care, social security or the crumbling infrastructure in our cities and towns would be such problems if the Read more:Three

Drugs In The Drinking Water - What Next? 2008-03-10 07:41:00 You know all those heinous "side-effects" those television ads for prescription drugs rattle off? Well get ready for more of them America because guess what? THESE DRUGS ARE NOW IN YOUR DRINKING WATER! Sure they're only trace amounts, and so some "experts" are saying there is no risk. Don't they realize that many of these drugs, like Prozac act cumulatively - you build it up in your body - that's why it takes so long to get off some of these drugs. Also, what happens if you are already taking some of these drugs? Or even more dangerously, what if you are taking medications that interact with the drugs in your tap water? I wonder just how many of our current issues with medications and health are actually caused by the water we drink...So you going to switch to bottled water? Make sure you Read more:Drugs

ETA Blamed for Political Killing in Spain 2008-03-08 07:24:00 I believe that all ethnic peoples should have a voice - I didn't say a country - a voice. But the Basque Separatist group ETA (Euskadi Ta Askatasuna) has talked from both sides of their mouth for so long that I no longer want to hear anything from them. Just when things are getting quiet from the Pais Vasque, they either blow something up or kill someone.I'm no stranger to ETA; I visited their homeland, talked to their Basque countrymen and was in Madrid during attempted ETA bombings on two separate occasions. However I also recall their sporadic cease-fires and "permanent" truces that they so conveniently revoke when they don't get enough attention. I think the Basque people have to decide if ETA is still a necessary vehicle for their collective voice, now that their unique culture is no Read more:Killing

Think You Got It Bad? $9 Gas In The UK! 2008-03-14 07:19:00 This CBS News video not only explains just how much more gas costs in the UK compared to here in the US - $9 a gallon! It also explains in layman's terms some of the factors behind the surging oil prices and the sagging dollar. So it's not just you America that is struggling to live with crazy gas prices, Europe has always had expensive gas - but this is getting ridiculous, especially for the cab drivers. The main difference in how the two landmasses are handling this crisis is that much of Europe has very good public transportation as well as established freight rail. Even though there are more trucks on the road than ever, Europeans are not nearly as dependant upon their cars and trucks as the US. Many Europeans do not even need to own a car, and those that do are not driving 8 cylinder Ca

Afraid of Big Brother? Better Pay With Cash 2008-03-13 06:48:00 The future is here and financial institutions are watching what you spend your money on. Now that using debit and credit cards are becoming the norm, we are making Big Brother
's job of watching us all that much easier. I know crackpots like Alex Jones have been banging this drum for a while, but the nut job has a point - a point brought home by the way the nabbed New York Governor Eliot Spitzer - they followed the money trail.I'm one of the guys laughing at this sleazy politician getting caught. However we freedom-loving Americans should be fearful that the POWERS THAT BE, are getting even better at watching over us. Living off the grid just got more appealing to me..Or you can do what the mob guys do and only pay cash, don't have any bills in your name and don't file income tax. Read more:Big Brother

Leniency For Tibet Protesters? China Please! 2008-03-17 06:52:00 I've never been too vocal about the Tibet
movement, probably because of the Dalai Lama's penchant for hanging out with celebrities to get his message across. I'm sure His Holiness is a great guy but the pandering to the Richard Gere types just rubs me the wrong way. However, with the recent clashes in Tibet with Chinese authorities, it shows me that maybe average Tibetans and the monks are getting fed up with the lack of progress. The images are far from non-violent resistance advocated by their Buddhist faith. You can see the frustration as monks help smash shop windows - and if you really think the Chinese authorities will go lax on the protesters as this video explains - then you don't know China
.I can understand their frustration - If Tibet had oil instead of Yaks maybe the US or even t Read more:Please
Not Enough Rice To Go Around 2008-03-19 06:53:00 Today is St. Joseph's Day a special semi-holiday for Sicilians and it celebrates divine intervention of one of Sicily's famous droughts. Famine was not an unknown word for my ancestors and so we honor those harsh times by eating a meal made from pasta, wild fennel and fava beans -products that were once considered weeds and animal feed. So it is poignant for me to point out on this day that the world's rice supply cannot meet the demand, and the hungry cannot meet the price. You know the world is in trouble when there isn't enough rice to feed everyone. This article just adds to the mounting signs of trouble in the world now that rice - the staple that feeds more humans than anything else - has tripled in price in the last five years. Regardless of the reasons, be it climate change or just Read more:Enough

Who Does It Help When The Fed Cuts Rates? 2008-03-18 08:07:00 So the Fed cut rates again this morning in the hope of saving the US economy from drowning. After a few years of working in banks and brokerage houses I wonder just who the interest rate cut actually helps - it certainly does not seem to help the average American. If you are taking out a loan, or buying a home then yes the rate cut helps you. But how about the people, especially the elderly that rely on their ever diminishing returns on their savings accounts and CD's. Now combine these lower returns with a weak dollar and rising food costs due to inflation and oil prices - remind me how cutting interest rates helps us?And what about the credit card companies? Most of us carry some sort of credit card debt - hell they've set up the system so that you NEED plastic - and they have been chargi Read more:Rates

Winnebago Will Get No Sympathy From Me 2008-03-21 07:09:00 As much as I support American business, I will not shed a tear for the fate of Winnebago
, a company that is part of the problem. Winnebago and their ever increasing line of monstrous RV's is a poster child for over-consumption in America and one I would not mind seeing falling by the wayside. I don't think part of the original "American Dream" was to drive your house to your vacation spot.I love to travel and who wouldn't want to travel across the US in ultimate comfort? But at what costs? Gas grows ever more expensive and yet over the last decade you see more of these behemoths on the road, blocking traffic, churning noxious fumes and even towing a sedan behind them like a dinghy! Here in New England our roads are just as wide as back in the horse and buggy days - barely able to handle ca Read more:Sympathy

Tibetan Calvary To The Rescue 2008-03-20 07:55:00 Here is a raw video of Tibetans on horseback, like a band of Cossacks or even Pancho Villa riding into a remote village to declare their freedom from China. I am actually surprised this video made it out due to China's crackdown on media coverage in Tibet.Regardless of where you stand on the Tibet question, you have to have respect for these guys as they face a nuclear power in China with horses, rocks and the occasional hunting rife. I'm not sure the Dalai Lama has anything to do with this - he does not need any involvement. Tibetans are frustrated and no amount of non-violent training and tradition can override the human compunction to defend themselves. The Dalai Lama must seem more myth than reality to the generations born after his exile - without their spiritual leader in their homela Read more:Calvary

I Wonder What School Lunch Is Like In The UK? 2008-03-28 05:16:00 Judging from this story, I'd say whatever they feed the kids in the UK is better than what we feed them here in the US. Otherwise I'd be either making my kids' lunch everyday or giving them some money to buy something instead of eating the down cattle and cartilage that the US feeds their kids at school.I remember the "school lunch is cool" commercials and posters when I was a kid - I wasn't so impressionable that I didn't trust my nose, those cafeterias stunk, especially on pizza or taco days. Fast food ain't health food but I bet they start with better ingredients than the USDA surplus the lunchladies had to work with.sorry about the lame posts - will be back to normal after the move! Never Too Young To Smoke Crack 2008-03-26 08:26:00 Advice from your pal AngryJed: Don't try to move into a new place after hip surgery....OK so what's pissing me off this morning besides moving boxes? Giving people excuses for deplorable actions. Read this little article below on how a 30-year old taught an 11-year old how to smoke crack. Sure that's pretty bad, but then you read of her sob story: 7 kids in foster homes, a family riddled by addiction and a lawyer pleading for her to stay out of prison. First off, why not prison? She taught a kid to smoke crack! They throw people in jail for much less in parts of our country. Another thing that pisses me off - 7 kids, SEVEN! She has custody of none and I doubt she is done fucking low-lifes for crack.I hate the drug laws here in the US - but teaching kids to get hooked on crack cocaine - a d Read more:Smoke
