SXSW Report #2 - Opening Night Party Well, it’s still the first night here. Doug is totally passed out from pure exhaustion, and I should be too… but I managed to pull together enough energy to hit the SXSW Film Festival Opening Night Party! The event was held at the Buffalo Billiards club in downtown Austin and it was one hell of a good time. I met some new and wonderful people… even scored a couple of phone numbers :P But the best part of the evening was just hanging out with the other web nerds. Talking movies, the online movie world and in general drinking far too much. Wheeeeee. Here are a couple of pictures from the evening: From left to right: Neil (Film School Rejects), Alex (FirstShowing), Peter (just the eyes sticking out from SlashFilm), Kevin (I0

Review: 10,000 BCBy Vic Holtreman Rating: 2.5 out of 5 Short version: While there's an attempt to make this a personal story, it's really about what we thought it would be: Incredible vistas populated with a combination of ancient temples, pyramids, woolly mammoths and a cast of (CGI) thousands. Two weeks ago I posted my thoughts about 10,000 B.C. based on what I'd seen so far and at the panel for the film at WonderCon, and one of the words that came to mind regarding what director Roland Emmerich had in mind for this film was "spectacle." Oh, and it tries oh so very hard to live up to that word. The best I can say about 10,000 BC is that it wasn't as bad as I was expecting it to be. The film opens with our hero as a young boy in a village that depends upon the annual hunt for wo

The Dark Knight Viral Site Updated Before and after look at IBelieveInHarveyDent.com which has been completely updated One of our readers (thanks, Patrick!) alerted us to the fact that one of the viral websites set up for this summer's blockbuster The Dark Knight has been completely updated and redesigned. Much like the Joker-related viral sites, this one is also asking for people to submit pictures and video. No doubt submissions will not be as creepy and will not put submitters on neighborhood watch lists. :-)There's also an announcement stating that Harvey Dent will be touring the country on his campaign trail, and they have downloadable graphics and such that you can use in whatever photos or videos you may want to submit to them. The deadline for entry submissions is midnigh

Departed's Monahan and Leo DiCaprio Eyeing The Chaser Remake - SendMeRSS

Departed 's Monahan and Leo DiCaprio Eyeing The Chaser Remake Leonardo DiCaprio is all about Asia nowadays. We confirmed early this month that there will be a 2009-slated, live-action remake of the Japanese classic Akira, for which the 33-year old actor is apparently set to star in and produce. Now, word comes that DiCaprio might lead a William Monahan-adapted remake of the Korean hit The Chaser, which was only released in that country last month. I guess the $20 million+ it's earned so far speaks to its appeal, if not the fact that Warner Brothers picked up the remake rights earlier this week for reportedly $1 million. Not bad. Thankfully, this isn't another Grudge or any of that Asia-to-America horror nonsense. At a high level, the film will depict DiCaprio as an "ex-cop who goes on

Ben Stiller's Tropic Thunder Trailer Debuts! Although it is set to officially debut next Wednesday night, the trailer for Ben Stiller's Vietnam War epic Tropic Thunder has arrived online at the official site. This is that "controversial" movie we talked about a few days ago that had Robert Downey Jr. as a black man. You can read about that mayhem here, but I think you'd rather watch this teaser trailer. As far as I know, the full trailer may yet debut next week, but this should hold you over. If you're ready to feast your eyes on this, have at it. This is a red band trailer which means you'll have to enter your information to verify your age to watch it. We'll update it once we have our own copy. Krasinski, Rudolph , Hines Join Mendes Film Written by David MorganSam Mendes is currently working on an untitled romantic comedy for Focus Features that now has its two stars. Variety reports that John Krasinski (The Office) and Maya Rudolph (Saturday Night Live) will play an expectant couple traveling the country "in search of a place to put down roots and raise a family." Cheryl Hines (Curb Your Enthusiasm) has also been cast. With a different director I might expect this to be another miserably disposable rom-com, but Sam Mendes hasn't made a bad film yet. Then again, you have to take into consideration that he's mostly worked with the very best of the top-notch actors like Kevin Spacey, Annette Bening, Tom Hanks, Paul Newman, and Jake Gyllenhaal. It'll be interes

New Trailer for Wanted - SendMeRSS

New Trailer for Wanted The full-length trailer for Universal Pictures' big, dumb summer action movie Wanted is online.  Based on the Mark Millar/J.G. Jones comic series, Wanted "tells the tale of one apathetic nobody's transformation into an unparalleled enforcer of justice".  It seems to be lacking in the comic's super-costumes, but it has plenty of its curving bullets and insane automobile tricks.  Screenplay from the Michael Brandt & Derek Haas writing team (3:10 To Yuma) with direction by Timur Bekmambetov (the Russian Nightwatch).  Stars James McAvoy, tatted Angelina Jolie, Morgan Freeman, Terence Stamp, Common, and Thomas Kretschmann. Wanted explodes into theatres June 27, 2008. Link - Thu, 06 Mar 2008 06:08:00 GMT - Fe

Watchmen Character Photos! With exactly one year to go until the film's release, director Zack Snyder has given fans their first good look at the characters in next year's highly anticipated hero-flick Watchmen. Just yesterday on the official website, Snyder posted five (heavily doctored) photos of five of the leads in full hero (or anti-hero) garb. Check out Jeffrey Dean Morgan as The Comedian, Patrick Wilson as Nite Owl, Matthew Goode as Ozymandias, Jackie Earle Haley as Rorschach, and Malin Akerman as Silk Spectre.   I think the Comedian and Rorschach look great. Silk Spectre looks a bit silly, but the costume is technically accurate. Nite Owl and Ozymandias however, look like they borrowed their costumes from Joel Schumacher's workshop. For crying out loud,

Rogen Will Observe and Report Seth Rogen will play an overzealous mall cop in Observe and Report, written and directed by Jody Hill. The central conflict of Observe comes when Rogen's character, Ronnie Barnhardt, squares off in a turf war of sorts against local police. The legend goes that Rogen and Judd Apatow saw Hill's debut feature The Foot Fist Way at Sundance 2006 and a fast friendship followed. Hill, who has no known relation to actor Jonah Hill (nee Feldstein), even appeared in a small role in the Rogen-written Superbad. As Variety points out, Observe and Report will have a turf war of its own as Columbia is currently producing the similarly-themed Mall Cop starring Kevin James. One major difference is that while the James film is expected to be reasonably family friendly,

Wilson and Koechner Get Tenure Written by David Morgan Luke Wilson and Anchorman co-star David Koechner are starring in a new comedy for Blowtorch Entertainment called Tenure. According to Variety, Mike Million wrote the script about "a beleaguered college professor (Wilson) who competes for tenure with an impressive new female colleague." Koechner will play Wilson's "anthropology prof sidekick." Mike Million will make his directorial debut when production begins this April in Philadelphia. This fits in with Blowtorch's mission to release "low-budget, youth-oriented movies marketed in concert with concurrent live events, in targeted college communities." That's just a long way of saying, "cheap movies for drunk college kids."

Jamal "Gravy" Woolard will play Christopher Wallace aka The Notorious B.I.G. in Notorious, a biopic on the, uh, infamous rapper. According to Variety, the story will follow Biggie "from his beginnings as a Brooklyn crack dealer to his rise to the top of the world of hip-hop." Though he only lived to the age of 24, there's still going to be a lot of ground to cover in that two hour movie. Angela Bassett will play Voletta Wallace, Biggie's mother. Derek Luke will play his friend/producer Sean "Diddy" Combs. Anthony Mackie will portray Biggie's hip-hop rival Tupac Shakur. Using the architectural technique of “earth sheltering,” they have created a cozy home literally built into the earth that shares a helluva lot of resemblance to a hobbit hole and The Shire in J.R.R Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. The Dale family claims to have no real knowledge of architecture and says they built the home for 3,000 pounds (about $7,000) over a three month period using, get this, a ̶

Amy Redford Sees 'Face Value ' Of Nazi-Fighting Sex Symbol Article by Heather Perry Though you may not have heard of her, actress Hedy Lamarr was the Paris Hilton of her day — a true international sex symbol. But Hedy had much higher hopes than Hilton, covertly helping take down the Germans in World War II, and now her truth-is-stranger-than-fiction life story is making its way to the big screen. “The script is called ‘Face Value,’” Amy Redford — the director of Sundance fave “Sunshine Cleaning” told us. “It concerns the life of Lamarr, who was a 1940s film actress, and her collaboration with an avant-garde composer named George Antheil. They came together during wartime and created an invention that pretty much changed the nature of arms

Caruso ever find a project that’s “everything in a movie I liked as a kid, and everything I’d like to make as a grown-up,” the director enthused. There’s good reason for that, Caruso playfully admitted, explaining how growing up as the last man on Earth is, well, is a lot like growing up as a director. “To me, what I love is that it happens to be about a gibberish, foolish boy who never grows up, and I think as a filmmaker you can always relate to that because this is one of those jobs where you don’t ha
