Oomphatico’s - Mould of their Own!
2008-03-06 10:13:24
Stepped into Oomphatico’s and you would imagine yourself transported to another world – lush and whimsical, the place was brightly and warmly lit with colours – a mixed of modern yet vintage feel. Furniture were well spaced so one would not feel confined. The fixtures were very cosy with thick cushioned armchairs, in a myriad of colours and tones, and there's a stylish casualness about the place, without being pretentious, it gives customers a very peaceful ambience to dine in. Pride itself of serving “Good Food”, the outlet comes with many interesting items on the menu – organic, Thai, noodles, Raw, gluten-free, raw and even ZEN to name some of them. You probably need time to scrutinise the menu to fully understand the kinds of items available to delight your palate. For start

How would you like the "Doneness" of your steak to be?
2008-02-26 11:15:13
After this post by ieatishootipost, where he mentioned in his comments "Kalos - I never said the steak was medium rare in the post. Actually I asked for somewhere in between Medium to Medium Rare. Too much rare on a thick steak like this and I feel like I was eating sashimi."I felt strongly that he was wrong. My reply to him was "... any good piece of steak not done medium rare is a waste of natural juices to the meat, as this is the time the meat begins to release alot of "red juices". Also, I feel a medium rare steak have a "springy" feel to the firmness." -- He did not reply after that.I stood for what I believe in - that steak are meant to be done medium rare at least. This especially after suffering two unfortunate incidents at Friends@Jelita & Aston Prime for overcooking my steak

Da Paolo's Pizza Bar - Italian Pizza At It's Best!
2008-02-24 11:59:16
For me, there is nothing more Italian than a piping hot & thin crusty slice of pizza. At Da Paolo , you find a stylish Pizza Bar like no other – with its long strip of dappled brown and white cow hide running along the ceiling and down one wall, bronze panels, a wall of wine-bottles and a stylish glass kitchen – Da Paolo’s choice of location for the Pizza Bar was premeditated – the bohemian status of Chip Bee Gardens lends itself to the Pizza Bar’s concept of providing a friendly and inspired environment to dine and wine. The Pizza Bar pursues closely to Da Paolo trademark cooking that is using fresh ingredients to elicit the taste. Ingredients to make the pizza dough are sourced directly from Italy and toppings are made from fresh ingredients only. For starters, we decided on

Friends @ Jelita
2008-02-16 11:21:17
Having read a few rave reviews about Friends @ Jelita, and armed with their $50 voucher (for every $150 spend), I was looking forward to spend a wonderful evening with a few of my friends. A causal fine dining restaurant, the owner of Friends, Thomas Chiam decided to open a second outlet at Jelita, minutes away from Holland Village after the success of its first outlet at Serangoon Gardens. We were surprised to find the restaurant empty on a Thursday evening when we arrived. After ordering, we were served the complimentary bread, and unlike the dip I had @ Wild Rocket, this one comes with Balsamic Vinaigrette along with olive oil. However, the food took surprisingly long to arrive considering that there were only 2 other tables that arrived after us. After 40 minutes, the starter of Pan-fr

Jerry’s Barbeque & Grill - The All American Cowboy Restaurant
2008-02-04 04:54:00
Now, who would give up on his successful aerospace company and jump into the kitchen to start an All American Cowboy Restaurant? The answer is Jerry Griffis. Just like Willin Low of Wild Rocket, Jerry did just that for a simple reason – his love for good food. After opening his flagship stall in Jalan Kayu and the downtown outlet in Club Street comes their 3rd outlet located in Tanglin Shopping Centre. To make the Tanglin outlet resemble a BBQ place in the South, many of the tables and chairs have been replaced with six-seat cosy booths. Although more famous for their Buffalo Wings, Baby Back Pork Ribs, and Prime Rib Cut Steaks, we opted for Fish & Chips as the main for the $10 set lunch and was greeted with a generous portion of Fillet accompanied by Potato Wedges and Coleslaw. Hanabi Japanese Restaurant
2008-01-30 10:55:40
If you have not read this, I am not a big fan of buffet. This is especially so after my last trip to Ikoi did not impress me much. However, since my friend suggested Hanabi @ King’s Arcade, a direct competitor to Ikoi, we make a reservation for dinner on a Saturday evening. When we arrived, it was fully packed – not a place conducive for conversations over dinner. However, with over 100 items to choose from, patrons will definitely be spoilt for choice. We started with the Sashimi, and it was excellent. It was fresh and the serving was generous – definitely bettered that of Ikoi’s – no wonder another friend of mine has been urging me to visit them for their sashimi. The Mixed Tempura was also of pretty good standard. I like for the fact that it is thinly coated with flour and ser

YY Kafei Dian - Buns to crave for
2008-01-27 02:50:25
I always have a fixation for things nostalgic. Perhaps it was the way I grew up where quaint kopitiams flourishes, and a notion that food courts serve sucky food for pampered people who do not know their food any better. It was no wonder why I am so excited when I discovered YY Kafei Dian – known for their Hainanese cuisine. The Hainanese Chicken Rice was good by any standard. The rice seems a tad yellowish, probably from the chicken oil - pretty fragrant but could be tastier. The chicken though was of good texture. It was cooked in such a way that there is a nice layer of gelatine under the skin – and this could only be achieved by dipping the whole chicken into a pail of ice water prior to serving – as such, some may tend to find the chicken too cold for consumption. The other favo

Astons Prime - Birthday Treat (or Trick)
2008-01-20 04:11:24
Located a stone throw away from their flagship outlet, Astons Specialities, sits Astons Prime – a more Atas, or upmarket version of their sister outlet that cater a wider range of premium meat cuts – with bookings and reservations accepted. The meal started off with the complimentary bread and homemade garlic spread, which my dad and I like it pretty much. While some might argue that the spread was bland and tasteless, I like it for its fragrant while finding some strong tasting ones overpowering, to the point artificial. Unfortunately, that is as good as it goes for the night. The Wild Mushroom Soup although generous with the shrooms, tasted just like any canned soup, and there is really nothing wild about it since the mushrooms used are nothing special. A case of misleading advertisi

Lunch @ Wild Rocket
2008-01-13 11:25:16
Willin Low, owner and a lawyer-turned-chef, firmly believes that the real purpose of cooking is to make people happy, and opening a bistro tucked away in a quaint trendy corner is his dream. And this dream was realised in early 2005, when a friend convinced him to take a look at the Hangout Hotel nestled in the quiet enclave of Mt Emily Park. Being located in District 9 but nestled on a hill away from Orchard Road nearby gives Wild Rocket the advantage of being accessible yet far away from it all. But most importantly, Wild Rocket serves what Will and his friends like to eat - basic, fuss-free cooking – simple good food with the best ingredients possible. The meal was kick-started with the complementary bread. Despite being served warm, I felt that the serving was pathetic, and also the

Waffletown - Waffle at it's best!
2008-01-06 10:54:27
For those who craved for the once popular A&W Fried Chicken and it’s nostalgic fixed-stool-table, you can look no further than Waffle town at Balmoral Plaza. This old school American diner charm was once located at the basement of Bukit Timah Plaza and has since assembled a loyal following. We were there on a Saturday afternoon and the outlet was fully packed with families and students. We ordered a 2 Piece Chicken Meal, coupled with Mash Potato and Coleslaw. Visually, the set did not look appetising at all in its presentation. But after sinking my teeth into the meat, it sets to dispel the notion that the dish is poorly executed. Its no frills approach ensure that the experience you get is one of “homely” feeling and not that of the commercialise KFC. I personally also like the co

Hup Kee - Fried Oyster Omelette
2008-01-03 08:58:18
Once stood the famous makan icon in Singapore…the Esplanade Satay Club – the breezily located Makansutra Gluttons Bay offers plenty of local food galore. And among them stood one of my favourite ‘Ou Luak’, or Fried Oyster Omelette Stall – Hup Kee (Orchard). This stall started off in the 70's at the famous Orchard Carpark night hawkers and now operates two outlets, the other being at the Newton Hawker Centre. What is so amazing about their dish as compared to others is that the eggs and the sweet potato flour are somehow done crispier, and less oily, which sources revealed is based on a 40-year-old recipe. I personally also found the eggs to be rather fluffy inside which gives it an excellent bite. You will also find a good number of fresh, succulent and plump Korean Oysters serve

HV Special 4 of 4 - Foster The English Rose Cafe
2007-12-27 10:23:38
Nestled in the midst of Holland Village, Foster – The English Rose Café is the place you would love to spend a lazy afternoon having a heart-to-heart talk with your friends over a cup of piping hot tea. Served from 3pm to 6pm daily, they are famous for its Devonshire Cream Tea that consisted of its signature oven hot Scones, coupled with cake and finger sandwiches and a choice of coffee or tea of your choice. The good vibe about it lies in the Butter, Homemade Strawberry Preserve and Fresh Cream spread for the scones. Sinful yet delightful, I love the fresh cream with the scones best. The décor and ambience of the place also gets top marks from me, as the old English cottage-styled setting charms one. But with the pros comes the minuses –the Fruitcake and Sandwiches that come with th

HV Special 3 of 4 - Marmalade Pantry

_________________________________________________________________ Small Talk: Peeps!! Sorry for the lack of updates as I have just returned from Morocco for a business meeting, and will be heading to Hong Kong for holidays in a few hours. The scenery is amazing in Morocco and I will be posting pix of the trips real soon... so stay tuned after Christmas!_________________________________________________________________Labelled as the chic, elegant bistro-dining place essential for ladies (or Tai Tais) to meet, the Marmalade Group opens its 3rd branch (after Palais Renaissance & Hitachi Tower) of Marmalade Pantry at Holland Village. HV Special 2 of 4 - Yi Bao
2007-12-12 06:26:17
What used to be called Yee Cheong Yuen Noodle Restaurant in a coffeeshop, is now air-conditioned and renamed as Yi Bao. The used-to-be queue and order system has also been upgraded to a serviced system restaurant. I remembered hordes of people used to queue up at the counter before the revamp on a Sunday afternoon, as families would gather there for lunches. However, when I visited them on a late Sunday morning, the crowd was not to be seen. Being a noodle stall, people would not usually associate it with the authentic chicken it served. However, as it dishes out its famous Ipoh Hor Fun, you will come to realise it produces a mean piece of chicken (Remember to order the Chopped Chicken version instead of the Chicken Slices version usually served in hawker centre). The chicken is always s

HV Special 1 of 4 - Aburiya
2007-12-09 08:22:35
Aww… just like my second home, Holland Village has always been my favourite hangout place. From the posh restaurants, to nice chill-out coffee joints, hawker food to pubs for a drink or two, this little bohemian enclave is the perfect setting to catch up with your friends and spend a day away. Tucked away at Lorong Liput, the quiet corner of HV is Aburiya – a Japanese Charcoal BBQ restaurant. If you happen to grace past their other branch at Robertson Quay, you would notice how pack that outlet is and the tantalising smell of grilled meat. But over at HV, you would observe the immediate difference – and that’s what I love this place for – we went there on a Friday, and it was not packed at 7pm. We opted for the tables outside the restaurant (open-air under a canvas shelter) for o

Fiery like Wasabi
2007-12-06 09:47:25
Wasabi, known as Japanese Horseradish, must be very finely grated before use and has an extremely strong flavour. Its hotness is more akin to that of Hot English Mustard. However, on the 5th floor of Far East Plaza, lies a small cosy Japanese restaurant run by a couple of Food Nazis – the chef with the lady boss are notorious for their temperament – said to be fierier than the wasabi they dished out, we soon experienced it when she told us in a not so friendly tone, “Don’t bend the laminated menu or else it would spoil”. However, like the short-lived spiciness of the wasabi, the bad attitude and service is soon forgotten the moment the food arrived. Seated in a small U-shaped counter for 16 pax, the Salmon Belly Sashimi is to die for – it is the most generous serving I had eve

Ulu Paradise
2007-11-27 11:42:58
Just a week after the bad experience with Kenny and the rest @ Mellben Seafood, he suggested another place to satisfy our craving for crabs. We set off for the North Eastern side of Singapore to a deserted ulu part of Defu Lane. After some good navigation skills, we finally located Seafood Paradise , right smack among the factory buildings. And be prepared to make a reservation when you wish to visit this place as Singaporeans really travel for their food - the place was fully packed on a weekend, and some even had to wait for a table even though they make a booking. To satisfy our hunger, we started with the Salted Fish with Fried Rice and what a great start it was! Each grain was coated evenly with eggs and fried thoroughly, such that no grain sticks to another. The flavour of the salted

"My Home"
2007-11-19 11:55:57
Ma Maison, which means “My Home” in French serves Japanese-style Western food, is done up to look like an English cottage – the quaint ambience is coupled with weathered wooden beams and panels, with racks of plates and crockery. The windows are curtained with floral curtains giving it a charming vintage look. On a personal note, I love the look and feel of the menu - which what feels like leather. We specifically came for its famed Hamburger Steak, which sits on a sauce that is simmered for 28 days – fully flavoured and very enriching. Topped with a Fried Egg and Moreish Potato, the beef patty is grounded nicely and finely grilled.Sink your teeth into a thick cut and you will marvel how tender the meat is. The Potatoes also came with a bite – a nice contrast to the soft beef. The

Hello, I am Kenny Ong and I am your guest blogger for today. A little about myself – I started off in the hotel industry as a Concierge – forte in food, before bagging the Asia Pacific Concierge of The Year for 2005, which took me to The Venetian Macao-Resort-Hotel, Macau as the Chef Concierge today. In between that, I also worked on several projects for Makansutra, tasting food from both established and upcoming food stalls and restaurants around the island. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This famous stall at Ang Mo Kio is famous for its delicious crab cuisines. It has a wide variety of crabs and has its own unique recipe. Foodies all over the island will come here for its Crab BeeHoon and Butter Crab. After

Fatty Rice
2007-11-11 06:29:59
Nasi Lemak, with roots in Malay culture, when translated literally means 'rice in fat'. The name is derived from the cooking process whereby the grains are soaked in rich coconut cream and then the mixture steamed. While traditionally a breakfast dish, this dish is now found everywhere at every time possible. Mentioned Nasi Lemak and Changi Village Road Food Centre immediately sprang to mind. While there are several competitor stalls competing with flashy stall signage, there is only one International Food Stall with its rather plain and simple signage. The queue that morning said it all – this stall is legendary for its long queue, which appears to be perpetually attached to it, come rain or shine. It definitely serves one of the best renditions, with Adam Road’s Selera Rasa Nasi Lema

Cafe Where Happy People Meets
2007-11-04 09:47:10
Themed as the café “where happy people meets” – Miss Clarity Café certainly lives up to it, with its loud and colourful interior décor, along with the tinge of ambience with candles on every table. There is a wide range of food selection to choose from – Shelled Appetisers, Sides, Pasta, Risotto, Mains, Burger, Pizza, and more recently, Black Angus Prime Sirloin & Ribeye, as well as the prized Wagyu Beef. My group of friends order a few dishes to share and we had the NZ Mussels immersed in Tomato Gravy as appetiser. The mussels were big and juicy but regrettably the gravy was thin and lacked in flavour. The Glutton’s Platter was just an assortment of Spicy Wings, Chicken Nuggets, Onion Rings, Crispy Wedges and Chipolatas – straightforward deep-fried finger food. For my m

What's the Fuss About this Chicken?
2007-10-25 10:10:21
That’s right. Friends and colleagues working near my area have been telling me about this particular supposedly famous chicken rice stall – Wee Nam Kee – lined up along Thomson Road @ Novena Ville. Read a few food reviews and indeed some were raving about it. Make a trip there and there was a crowd during lunchtime – surely this is a good sign! Alas, everything else went downhill from there onwards. The rice was fragrant enough, but a tad under-cooked, making it difficult to shallow. The Roasted Chicken was pretty dry and tough as well and nowhere near the standard of Tian Tian Chicken Rice @ Maxwell Food Centre, which is known for it’s smooth and tender meat (although I have to highlight that they only serves Hainanese-styled Steamed Chicken). We also order the side dishes like

Toast for my after tea break
2008-03-11 06:41:27
According to Wikipedia, “Toast is sliced bread, which has been browned by exposure to dry heat… Toasting warms the bread, making it more pleasant to eat for some, and makes it crisp such that it holds toppings more securely… Toast is often served with butter, cheese, marmalade, or any number of other toppings.” Last Sunday afternoon, I was hungry and I decided to make something light for tea break. An idea stroke when there happen to be French Loaf Slices, Foie Gras Spread in the fridge that I bought from Paris airport, some leftover Braised Duck from lunch (We had Teochew Porridge at home), and some Coriander Leaves from the kitchen. Topped it up with a hint of Japanese Mayonnaise and some Oregano Leaves from the bottle – and my master creation of Mayonnaise Braised Duck, with F

Yakader Muslim Food - Original Chicken Dum Briyani
2008-03-09 06:08:18
Tekka Centre, or 竹脚中心 located in the Little India area is a multi-use building complex comprising a wet market, food centre and shops, located along Bukit Timah Road, Race Course Road, Buffalo Road and Serangoon Road. It is said that at the wet market, you can find all sorts of spices, and traditional ingredients that you cannot find anywhere else in Singapore. And it is also at the food centre that you can find one of the most popular Indian Muslim Stall that dished out the best Original Chicken Dum Briyani – Yakader Muslim Food. Cooked using long grain Basmati Rice and Glee, the Dum method of cooking stews food in a pot sealed with foil to prevent the steam from escaping. The food gradually steams in its own natural juices, captivating the subtle essence of the spices and h

Bakerzin - Stick to your niche please!
2008-03-17 04:34:55
My last post on them was June 2007 and back then, my advice to Bakerzin was – "Stick to your niche in desserts and stop diluting your brand with sub standard mains" – I went back 7 months later for their desserts and it is beyond doubt that I am sticking my guns to this statement. Their signature Warm Chocolate Cake is sinfully delectable. Described as the “melt-in-the-mouth chocolate cake oozing with rich Valrhona chocolate”, Valrhona, founded since 1924, focuses mainly on top-quality luxury chocolate marketed for professional as well as for private consumption. And I would say what a huge difference it made especially since I could evaluate it to the second-rated one I had at Friends@Jelita. Also the warmness of the cake prepared freshly by the chef harmonised perfectly with the

Absolutly Wonderfully
2008-03-20 03:53:57
Just touched down not too long ago from a 10-day family holiday to Sydney for my sister’s wedding (photos and food reviews to be uploaded real soon I promise!). And one of the best rewards that came out of this trip was - I have finally completed my compilation of Absolut bottles! I managed to place an order of Absolut Peppar 1L at one of the local liquor shop in the city and completed the collection by purchasing the Absolut Level in Changi DFS. Here is the elusive one after many months of searching.

Korean Cuisine @ Le Meridien Food Court
2008-03-23 00:29:39
The good thing about working in a foreign company is you get to meet lots of people from different walks of life from different nationalities, discovering different cultures and traditions. In my company, I have worked with Americans, Dutch, Swiss, Japanese, Korean , Malaysians, Indians, Filipinos and Chinese to name a few. And it was one day that my Korean colleague introduced me to Korean food at this place. She said she find the standard of food served here similar, if not better, than most of the other Korean restaurant she has been to so far - for a fraction of the price.Taking her word for it, we ventured to Le Meridien for one of our lunches. Lunch was Spicy Beef Soup with rice plus a choice of condiment between Kimchi, Cucumber, or Anchovies. Serving was generous with the bowl fill
