It's Angry Letter Time! 2007-01-23 18:15:00 Dear Crappy State Community College,
The snowstorm came in Sunday morning, and was over by Sunday early afternoon. Coming out of my class on Sunday the sidewalks were very, very icy. I slipped several times trying to walk to my car, but luckily I didn't fall. I can understand not having the sidewalks cleared then. It was Sunday, and you probably didn't have many staff available to clear the sidewalks and put down salt. Besides, there were only a few classes that day, so not that many students to inconvenience.
But Monday evening, things should be all clear, right? I mean, you had the remainder of Sunday, plus all of Monday to do a little clearing. And sure enough, the snow had been pushed aside. But you still didn't bother to do anything about the ice. I would far rather trudge through slushy snow than walk on a thin layer of very slippery ice.
The parking lot? One big sheet of ice. The sidewalk? More ice. As I walked from my car to the testing center to take an exam, I couldn't Read more:Letter
Winter Has Finally Arrived! 2007-01-22 18:25:00 (Note: My apologies to Bloglines readers for the ginormous pictures you're about to see. They resize better in Blogger when they're in the original size, rather than scaling them down first in Flickr, then in Blogger's format.)
Yesterday morning, I got up at 6am and peeked out the window to see if the snow that was forecasted had begun. Nothing. So I went back to bed for a little bit.
Then, I woke up around 9:30am, looked outside, and was greeted with a winter wonderland of snow. Everything had a thick white blanket of snow on it, and the snow was still coming down heavy.
Seeing that this was the first significant snow of the season, I would have enjoyed spending the day taking Cordy out to play in the snow. But Sunday is when I must go to class for my Microbiology lab. So, while I spent the afternoon knee-deep in live bacteria (fun, eh?), Aaron and Cordy spent the afternoon ankle-deep in snow.
At least Aaron took pictures so I could see how the afternoon went:

Him: So Cordy will have to get used to not being carried as much when the new baby gets here.
Me: Well, Cordy's big for her age. She's getting tough for me to carry already.
Him: Really? How big is she?
Me: I'm not exactly sure at the moment, but she's not yet two and a half, and she's over 36" tall and weighs at least 34 pounds.
Him: Wow! She is a big girl! My eight year old only weighs 45 pounds.
Me: Yeah, well, give her a few more years and she'll be a real contender for the NFL draft. We're thinking linebacker.

What Is "Enough" Maternity Leave? 2007-01-17 21:49:00 Even though I love to shout my opinions far and wide, it may come as a surprise to some of you that I can be a pretty serious lurker as well. I lurk on some blogs, but more likely I'm lurking on message boards for a wide variety of topics. I enjoy message boards, but with keeping up with so many blogs, I don't feel I have the time to invest in getting to know everyone on a message board. So I read, occasionally feel the urge to post but suppress it, and enjoy my little one-sided glimpse into the world of others while I keep to the shadows.Lately I've found myself lurking on a pregnancy message board, and a topic that came up over the past few weeks really surprised me. Someone asked the group how long each of them would be taking off for maternity leave. I expected to read that most of these women, well, the ones living in the US, at least (lucky Canadians and your year of paid leave!), would be taking as close to 12 weeks off as possible, per FMLA guidelines. However, my jaw hit th Read more:Enough

Dragging My Butt Back To The Keyboard 2007-01-16 03:30:00 First off, thank you so much to everyone for posting a comment on my last post. It was wonderful to "see" so many new visitors, as well as those I see occasionally, and my regulars. I've got a ton of new blogs to visit now, so expect to see me stopping by in the next week or two. And even if you don't have a blog, thanks for letting me know you're reading. Blog writers are attention-whores, and it feels good to know people enjoy our writing. We arrived home from Chicago this morning a little after 3am, so I'm still trying to adjust to being home again. The drive back was horrible - rain, heavy rain, and torrential rain, but we were determined to get out of Chicago before the rain switched over to ice and snow up there.Aaron's workshop was held in a different location this year. While I enjoyed staying in downtown Chicago for the past four years, right across the street from Grant Park and in easy walking distance of the Art Institute, Field Museum, and Shedd Aquarium, this year the Read more:Dragging
Hi, Welcome To My Blog. Who Are You? 2007-01-11 04:18:00
I was caught totally unaware that it was De-lurking Week. This is the week for all of you who read this, but don't normally chime in to say hi and let me know you exist. If I had as many comments as I do visitors, I'd have over a hundred comments a day.
I'm not asking for anything too crazy - if you're shy, a simple hello works fine. If you want to tell me a little more about yourself, go for it. And if you want to tell me what you'd like to see me write about, I'd be happy for the suggestions. See? All friendly and happy and non-threatening.
Tomorrow I'm going out of town for the weekend. Without Cordelia. I can't decide if I want to cheer or cry. It's a long weekend of sleeping in, going to the bathroom without an audience, eating meals without sharing, and shopping leisurely. But it's also a weekend without that smiling face, those playful curls, that warm little body sitting on my lap, and the constant exclamations of "Hi, mommy!" She would come with me, but we a Read more:Welcome
You Think You Know Me 2007-01-09 02:53:00 Since I'm still getting over the new year's ick, I think it's time for a meme. Kate tagged me to come up with five things you don't already know about me. I've done this once before, and I can't even remember what I wrote, so I guess this time I'd better dig deep to think up some juicy tidbits to make it worth reading.
Five Things You Didn't Know About Me (pre-mommy days):
1. I've been kidnapped once in my life, and nearly kidnapped a second time. The first time wasn't technically a kidnapping, since it was by my father, while my parents were still married, but just after mom asked for a divorce. I was a year old, so of course I don't remember any of it, and the entire ordeal lasted a couple of days. The second time was when I was eight, I think, and it was a stranger trying to kidnap me as I walked to my babysitter's house from the community pool. It was a very scary experience, and changed the way I thought about people. I can tell the story one of these days,
Time To Enter The Confessional 2007-01-24 18:58:00 There's something that has been bothering me lately, and I feel the need to confess it to all of you. I didn't think it was a problem, my husband didn't think it was a problem, but others around us keep telling us it's a problem. And after hearing it enough, it makes a person wonder what kind of parent they are to not be more aware of things like this, and be more vigilant about taking action to correct the problem.
Here goes: I have a two year old, nearly two and a half, actually, and she cannot use a spoon or fork.
I know - I'm an awful parent, right? OK, maybe not the earth-shattering confession you were expecting, but nonetheless still an issue that seems to be pointed out to us more and more each day.
Cordy has no interest in feeding herself with a spoon. None at all. She's actually become quite good at feeding herself finger foods, like cut up triangles of sandwiches, pretzels and crackers, and anything that doesn't require an eating utensil. But put a spoon in her hand Read more:Confessional
Pictures From My Uterus 2007-01-26 23:09:00 Yesterday was a double-dose of pregnancy news. My regular doctor's visit was first, followed by an evening visit for another ultrasound to confirm the gender.
I went to the doctor expecting to see a weight gain this month. I was sick at the beginning of the month, but since then my hunger has quadrupled and I find myself eating non-stop all day long. I have become the stereotype of the pregnant woman stuffing her face anytime she can. If there is food near me, chances are I'm eating it, unless it specifically belongs to someone else.
But when I stepped on the scale, I was greeted by a smaller number. I'm down a half pound from last month, for a total loss of three and a half pounds since my starting weight. My doctor and I discussed it, and she's not worried, since the baby is still right on track for growth. I started this pregnancy 20 pounds heavier than when I started my pregnancy with Cordy, so I've got plenty of extra to feed the baby with. However, the doctor joked that I Read more:Pictures
The Today Show Said My Mom's A Drunk 2007-01-27 19:36:00 Thanks a lot, Today
Show. After watching your segment on cocktail playdates, I called my mom and discussed the topic with her. During this discussion, mom said, "Well, when you were little, I'd have a wine cooler or two with my friends while you were playing with the other kids."
Wow. After all these years, I find out that when we went over to her friends' houses so I could play with their kids, turns out she was drinking alcohol with her friends. I never knew, and now the saintly image of my mother has been turned upside down, as I now see she was nothing more than a normal human being with a taste for alcohol and a desire to relax after working 40 hours a week, and parenting me on her own the other 138 hours. My childhood memories are shattered now that the truth has come out that my mom was a bad parent.
OK, all sarcasm aside now, WTF was up with this segment? For those who missed it, the video can be viewed at the link above. They did a short video piece, with the most sensatio

She's Going To Hate Me When She's Older 2007-02-01 23:44:00 Cordy had to accompany me today for a few quick errands - to the post office, and then to my work, to complete a task I forgot to wrap up yesterday.
If there's one thing this child does not like, it's running errands. It's hard enough to run errands with a toddler, but make that toddler an unwilling participant, and it becomes cruel and unusual punishment on level with Gitmo.
First was the post office, to mail some papers that could not wait another day. Walking in the door, I noticed the line, about 4 people deep. Not so bad, I thought, we can make it through this, since we've endured longer lines before.
I took my place in line, with my squirming toddler on my hip. Letting her down would be a disaster - she'd be out the door with the next stranger who would open the door for her faster than I could beg someone to hold my place in line. So she is forced to stay in my arms, a fate she normally doesn't mind, unless we are somewhere she doesn't want to be.

My Daughter, The Non-Girly Girl 2007-02-05 19:37:00 Cordy is not a girly girl.Oh sure, she wears dresses when I put them on her. Of course, she has no opinion on what she wants to wear, and doesn't care how I dress her. She hates having her hair messed with, preferring the style achieved by rubbing her head all over the couch and a fleece blanket: frizzy and standing straight up. Headbands, ribbons, hairclips? Never. She does appreciate beauty, but not where you'd expect. She will hold up her soccer ball and proclaim, "Itz booo-ti-full!" She has yet to apply the term "beautiful" to any person, or anything beyond balls, her fleece PJs, a sippy cup of milk, and her beloved stuffed puppy. For Hanukkah, she was given a pretty pink plastic tea set. She hugged that box all night, and continued to hug it the next day, and the day after that. When we finally opened it and took out a cup for her to play with, she tossed the cup aside. No, it was the box she liked. We have yet to see Cordy take much of an interest in stereotypical "girl" toys. Oth Read more:Daughter

What Makes This Pregnant Woman Happy? 2007-02-06 22:09:00 Hearing someone say, "You're all baby, and you look fabulous!"?
A foot massage by a hot, shirtless pool boy named Fernando?
Walking without feeling like my pelvis will split in two if I take one wrong step?
A glass of wine?
No, my friends. While all of those are nice, this is what true happiness looks like:
After a long (too long!) absence, they're back. That yummy, frozen pudding-on-a-stick goodness is back.
While grocery shopping the other day, I caught a glimpse of them out of the corner of my eye, and before you could say Bill Cosby, they were in my cart. I don't know how long pudding pops have been off the market, but it's been long enough for several petitions to circulate, demanding their return, and for others to attempt to fill the void with homemade versions of this creamy treat.
I have already scarfed down a third of the box, and while the taste matches my memory of it, there are some differences. No worries - all three flavors are represented again: chocola Read more:Happy
The Designated Parent 2007-02-07 18:29:00 I forgot that Stefanie Wilder-Taylor was going to be on the Today Show this morning, but stumbled upon it while watching the news for weather, traffic, and closing updates. (In case you didn't know, the sky dumped snow on us last night. Yay, winter!)
I was first reminded when they were sitting on the couch, discussing upcoming stories that hour, and they reminded viewers they would be revisiting the Cocktail Playdates story, after the uproar it caused last week. Apparently word reached them that people had some pretty strong opinions on the subject, including many bloggers who felt the segment was nothing more than an ambush on moms who think a glass of wine while hanging out with other moms is OK. (Do a Technorati search for Cocktail Playdates to see many of the blog posts, or just see Melissa's list of blog posts here.)
At that point, Matt Lauer put Meredith Viera on the spot, asking her what her opinion was on the topic of drinking around kids. I don't think I've ever seen som Read more:Parent
When Hormones Attack 2007-02-09 13:56:00 I've been fairly lucky to avoid the crazy, hormone-induced, emotional mood swings of pregnancy. Maybe it was from years of birth control pill use, or maybe my body is good at adjusting to the increase of hormones to the nth power. When pregnant with Cordy, a friend asked Aaron how he was dealing with the sudden food cravings, emotional outbursts and mood swings, and Aaron replied that I wasn't the typical crazy pregnant woman, and really didn't have any of those, so it was all good.
This pregnancy has been much the same, although every now and then an emotional outburst builds and builds, ever so slowly, from many different events affecting me over a short period, and then the floodgates open. Last night was one of those nights.
It started when Cordy chose not to nap yesterday. This always puts a little extra stress on me, because if she doesn't nap, then I don't nap. By evening, thanks to the lack of sleep, she was cranky. I also felt like a horrible mother after she was playi
Global Warming A Myth? 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Today is January 5, 2007. Here in Ohio, the normal high for today is 36 degrees F, and the normal low is 21 degrees F. Snow or ice is common at this time of year.Today's high? 61 degrees. The low? 52 degrees. And it's been like this for weeks. Two days before the New Year, I was driving around without a coat, with the windows down, basking in the sunshine. One day, the local news reported that the high for the day was higher than the daily high for Arizona. The grass is greening again. The robins are either still here or back from the south, some plants are beginning to bud, and nature herself can't figure out what season it is.I have to keep rotating the same outfits in Cordy's wardrobe because it's too damn warm for her winter clothes. Had I know we were skipping winter entirely and going straight to spring, I might have bought her less sweaters and fleece pants and more light cottons.I'm not saying I want a Colorado blizzard or anything, but how about something a little more, w Read more:Global

What A Start To 2007 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Nothing like a stomach bug to start off the new year right. After 12 hours of vomiting, and 36 hours of gently convincing my stomach to keep food down and gradually climbing out of bed, the worst is over. I'm down 8 pounds after the whole ordeal (my maternity pants are suddenly falling off of me), which combined with the 3 pounds I've lost overall since becoming pregnant means I might be heading for a stern talking to by my OB this month.Naturally, I hoped to wake up this morning feeling better, and I did, at least as far as my stomach is concerned. But I now seem to have developed a massive head cold overnight. So. not. fair.Baby #2 seems to have weathered it all OK. I was a bit worried at first - I didn't really feel any movement at all yesterday or the evening before, but today I felt a few twitches to let me know she's still OK.Any real thoughts on resolutions for the new year were pushed out of the way by ponderings of what I did to piss off the gods of health. Blog Exchange: A Life On Call 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Not too long ago, I lived my life like a little Pavlovian pup. My cell phone would ring and an editor would be on the other end of the line, telling me about a shooting at a local church, an Eric Rudolph arrest, a Terri Schiavo court battle, a family that lost their son in the Iraq War. "Can you get over there and find out what's going on?" these editors would ask me. And I'd always say yes, all the while mentally preparing myself for how I'd drop what I was doing - the leisurely morning with the husband, the in-law visit, the plans with the girlfriends - and get myself into indispensable get-to-the-bottom-of-it mode.Being pregnant with my first child did not stop me from carrying on like this. Seven and a half months along, I covered a story about a woman held hostage by a courthouse shooter. I drove two hours to Augusta - The soundtrack? My constantly ringing cell phone. - to cover a press conference where the onetime hostage asked the media to leave her alone. It w Read more:Exchange

Done For Another Year 1970-01-01 00:59:59 It's over. It's all over. Christmas and Hanukkah have come, gone, and now are in the past. And this tired pregnant woman couldn't be happier to see it all go. Oh sure, I like seeing family, decorating the tree, eating good food, and getting and giving presents, but I put so much energy into it that I barely have enough to get me through to the end of the year.Christmas Eve was the more formal party night. We went to see my dad's side of the family, and this year's gathering was being hosted by my cousin and his enormous new house. I can't even fully describe how big that place was. As we walked up to the door, Cordy said, "Look, a palace!" and Aaron and I had to laugh and agree that she wasn't far off. The place has three full floors, a sunken formal Italian-style dining room, a two story living room with a wall of windows looking out onto a lake, etc. The downstairs was a funhouse: a game room with a pool table, air hockey table and pinball machine, a full bar (seriously, when
Christmas Worst, 2006 1970-01-01 00:59:59 It's no surprise that when receiving a gluttony of gifts, you're bound to get a few that make you say, "Huh?" You know what I mean - gifts that make you wonder what that person was thinking when they tossed it into the gift bag.I have to admit that most of our relatives are competent gift givers. They actually take the time to think about what a person might like as a present. But every family has to have that one crazy family member, right?Once again, my Great Aunt Dorothy has taken the prize for worst gifts. An item is only a good gift to her if it is on sale, preferably 75% or more off, and she has a coupon as well. If a store is closing, you can bet we'll be seeing products from that store at the next holiday gathering.Aunt Dot never gives individually wrapped gifts. Instead, we all receive large gift bags (now that Lazarus has been bought out by Macy's, we no longer have gift bags made of Lazarus shopping bags), and in those bags is a random assortment of junk collected over t Read more:Christmas
Preparing For A New Sibling 1970-01-01 00:59:59 When I found out I was pregnant in September, one of my first thoughts was: how do we prepare Cordy for this? She had just turned 2 at the time, and while her grasp of language is pretty good for her age, we figured we wouldn't tell her right away. Since then, I've tried to explain to her why mommy can't pick her up as much (besides the fact that she's 33 or 34 pounds solid), and why she can't sit on mommy's tummy. But she still shows no signs of comprehending what I'm telling her. Then a few months ago, there was a special on Nick for the Blue's Clues 10th anniversary, and it covered the topic of having a sibling. Meet Blue's Baby Brother is still Tivo'd, because it is something she likes to watch at least once a week. I'm used to her walking up to me, looking up at me with pleading eyes, and saying, "Bwue's budder? Bwue's budder?"So for about a month now, I sit with her when she watches it, and tell her, "Cordy will have a new family member, too." We didn't know if it was Read more:Sibling
Four Days. No Nap. 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Four days. Four long days. Cordelia has spent the past four days declining to nap as normal, as if it was an option. However, I don't think she realizes that she really needs those naps, and without them, her mood has been nothing short of a cocaine addict going cold turkey. Also, in these past four days, other weird behaviors have emerged. Friday night, she sat between Aaron and I on the couch, playing tickle games and peek-a-boo with a pillow. Then, before we knew it, she was laying still under the pillow, fast asleep. It was still a half hour until her normal bedtime. She rarely falls asleep with other people in the room, especially us, so we were baffled. The other strange behavior is a sudden aversion to her room and her crib at naptime. Yesterday, we tried to take her upstairs for a nap in the afternoon. Normally she's happy to go upstairs, and looks forward to being in her crib, with all of her stuff. Half the time she's the one telling me she wants a nap! But this time, it was Read more:Four Days
Mystery Solved. Yuck. 1970-01-01 00:59:59 This morning, Cordy's weird moods continued. After being awake for only an hour, she stood in front of me and said, "Whet's go baff!""You want to take a bath?" I asked."O-K! Whet's go up de staiwers!"She likes baths. But not enough to request them willingly. Then Ms. Jekyll turned into Ms. Hyde when we left the house. As I closed the front door, she started to struggle and cry, fighting me and kicking me as I tried to get her strapped into the car. She screamed half of the way, then arrived at the babysitter's house happy and back to normal. I was still wondering what the hell was going on.And then tonight, I got my answer.Aaron called me as I left work, and the first thing I heard was Cordy screaming in the background. On the way home, Cordy had made some sad, whiny noises, pointing to her throat, and Aaron thought that maybe her coat was bothering her.But then she vomited all over the car. There was no warning before that. She had not eaten recently, she had not been crying. Aaron Read more:Mystery
Snow Day 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Remember when I was lamenting winter's absence earlier this year?I take it all back. There is a sidewalk and a few rocks under there somewhere.I think that's my car under the snow drift.First was the snow, and now we have nothing but freezing rain and ice falling, which will turn back to snow tonight. The entire city - schools, libraries, city government, universities (even Ohio State!), major businesses - has been shut down.Well, the entire city is shut down, except for the State of Ohio offices, even though the State's legislative government already called off for the day. So my husband is still stuck out in this, while everyone else has been sent home. And I'm snowed/iced in with a cranky, semi-sick toddler who won't nap and only wants to watch Dora all day. Whee! Expect to see me commenting on every blog today. Even archived posts.
How NOT To Take Your Toddler Out Into The Snow 1970-01-01 00:59:59 1. Decide it's OK to play in the snow, even though your toddler has been a cranky nightmare.Never a good idea.2. Don't check the back door before you suit up, to make sure the door isn't iced shut.Yeah, it might have been smart this morning to check the door first. Turns out, it had a small snow drift up against it, with a layer of ice over that, making the door impossible to open. I pushed it, I kicked it, I put my whole body weight into the door, but nothing would open it. Of course, Cordy was at the door the entire time, anxious to go outside.I tried to tell her that we needed to go to the front door, but this two year old can't comprehend changes in plans like that, and the tantrum began. She wanted the door open - right now. And my inability to open the storm door was translated to her as I got her all dressed up only to dash her dreams of playing in the snow. This was the result:Change is hard.3. Carry crying toddler to the front door, then force her outside. She screamed and
A Quick Note To My Neighbors 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Did you all miss the news where the governor of Ohio said we should all help our neighbors out during this snow storm?Clearly you saw your very pregnant neighbor early this afternoon, trying to clear her car of the snow and ice. I know because I saw you looking out the window. Plus, it was hard to miss hearing your kid pounding on the window at me, as if I was an animal in the zoo, when I fell on my butt on the uneven, icy ground. It's OK, I really didn't need the help, even after I fell a second time, and was clearly struggling to keep my footing.Of course, two hours later, when I was trying to go to work, not only did you watch out your window as I got stuck in the snow plow wake in the street, but apparently other neighbors also joined in to watch as well. You watched as I tried to dig my car out of a rut with only a long-handled ice scraper, huffing and puffing, not offering your able-bodied self as I repeated my attempt to leave, then dig out, then attempt to leave, several time Read more:Quick

Weekend in Review 1970-01-01 00:59:59 I believe I once said I loved snow, and that if it was going to be cold, I'd rather it be cold with snow. Well, I've changed my mind, or at least modified my opinion to exclude years when I'm pregnant.Going anywhere this weekend was trying at best, thanks to all of the snow and ice. We received another 2-3" of snow on Saturday, which provided some traction, but mostly served to obscure the ice underneath. By this point, many places of business had given up on trying to clear their parking lots and sidewalks, and simply hoped their customers wouldn't fall and break a bone. I had no choice but to be out in it, as I had to work on Saturday, and had class on Sunday.I've also changed my opinion on the advantages of being pregnant in the winter. When we discussed trying for baby #2, part of our timing involved the decision that it might be better for me to be pregnant during colder months, avoiding the heat of the summer like last time. (Cordy was born in September.) Having been through Read more:Weekend
