Thursday Thrombosis
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Today in history:In 1965, poet T.S. Eliot died in London at age 76. (Too bad those stupid poems that Andrew Lloyd Webber got his mitts on didn't die with him.)Whew - folks, I gotta tell ya, I'm ready for the week to be OVER. Yes. OVER. I guess those two four-day weekends in a row kicked me in the butt, huh? Oh well...that's the way it goes in the big city. Or the small town. (I need a nap too - did I mention?)However, neither rain, sleet, snow, sleep deprivation or a surprise visit from George Clooney will keep me from my appointed rounds...well, now...maybe I'm being too hasty with the Clooney factor. Still, I'm devoted, damn it!First of all, today's "Celebrity criminal" is BUSTA RHYMES!!! I must say, if one could pick their mug shot, this is a pretty good picture of the man. The outfit looks good too, but you know how the penal system can be about that whole day-glo orange thing. Narrow minds...what can I say?Anyway, according to this article, Busta did the right thin

Day after Ford's funeral Day!!!
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Quote of the day:"`I can forgive, but I cannot forget,' is only another way of saying, `I will not forgive.' Forgiveness ought to be like a canceled note — torn in two, and burned up, so that it never can be shown against one." — Henry Ward Beecher, American clergyman (1813-1887).(Uh - what a jerk! As I always say, you can forgive a dog for biting you, but that doesn't mean you should go back in that dog's yard. What a yutz.)Well. Life is back to normal (?) here in Sudieworld. Back to work, easing into the schedule like one eases into their favorite pair of jeans. Sigh...and in another two weeks we'll have another government holiday. YAY. I love these holidays. So, since life is "back to normal" (a relative term, although if you know my relatives, it's not necesarily applicable), let's get down and funky with our bad selves, eh?First of all, here's the "celebrity criminal" for today (at the rate this society is going, this will probably morph into a daily feature.)Now

Fibrous Friday

Nancy Pelosi Two Heartbeats From the Presidency(So that means she's a freak of nature? I mean, come on - at best, two heartbeats means there's a heart murmur somewhere. At worst, there's two of those cardiac things going on in ONE body. That's "Ripley's" material, folks...)The first Friday of 2007, folks! Lap it up for all it's worth.Lots of stuff going on today - first of all, I am really psyched about the possibility of a Police reunion tour. Why? Because Sting needs to quit being by himself. I like him, don't get me wrong, but he just needs to get back to the Police and be their frontman. Enough with the pretentious neo-Celtic-jazz thing (although any projects where Branford Marsalis is employed get my seal of approval). My opinion is not shared by Sting, but then again, I don't think that's the only area where we disagree. But YEAH I want to see it! I'd donate one of D's organs to get tickets - that's how devoted I am to this idea. Also, according to CNN, Linds

Oh - Who are the people in YOUR neighborhood? (First in an intermittent series)
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Let me state this for the record - the picture to the left is the first image that came up in my browser when I typed the words "cowboy pimp".I didn't really think there was such an animal, but apparently there is.Now, the reason I bring up this little factoid is because D and I had quite an unusual sighting yesterday at breakfast. For those unfamiliar, D is the fiance, and we usually dine at McDonalds for breakfast before we go to our therapy sessions on Saturday mornings. We usually sit in the sunroom area of our neighborhood McDonalds, because the lighting is better and we can read the paper without doing TOO much squinting. However, yesterday we were seated in a different part of the restaurant. It turned out to be a good thing for us, because otherwise we would have missed the floor show.Let me give you the vital stats of the gent we're talking about (and please understand - I am in NO WAY being racist in my descriptions - I am merely noting the humor of the situation that you wil

Why does this fascinate me so?
1970-01-01 00:59:59
There are perks when working as a federal contractor. One of them is having today (January 2) off. I wasn't nursing a hangover brought on by the (yet another) loss of the Iowa Hawks at their latest bowl match-up. (I wasn't surprised, but I didn't drink my sorrows away because I didn't have any.)Ever since my dad passed last year, I read the obits closely. My hometown's newspaper website sucks as far as what they have in their obituary section. But I'm fascinated with the process of a final celebration of one's life.Former President Gerald Ford was no exception. I wrote about him (or my memories of him) for my "Iowa Expatriate" blog with the Iowa City Press-Citizen, I was kind of bummed that I wasn't going to get to see any of the proceedings (up close or through TV), and then word came that we were getting Jan. 2nd off. Therefore, in an effort to feed my fascination with final send-offs, I watched the services this morning. And yes, in the true Sudiegirl geek tradition, I took n

Here's the first two paragraphs in this news story...NEW YORK - As you sink into your couch to watch a favorite TV show this holiday weekend, take comfort in the knowledge that you're not alone. Nationally speaking, at least.Unity within your own home is another matter entirely. A majority of Americans got hooked on a TV show this year, an AP-AOL News poll shows. But some say they watch their favorite shows alone: Their spouse or partner is into much different fare.Sudiegirl's response?"Well, DUH!" *rolls eyes dangerously back in head*Is this REALLY a surprise? NO! However, journalists and those who conduct these lovely surveys want us to THINK it's groundbreaking. Nope...not by a long shot. I may be only 37 (almost 38) years old, but I think I've got enough TV watching and observation of others under my belt that this kind of thing is not alien to me.To be honest, I've seen weird TV preferences between my grandparents, parents, and many other folks (including myself). My Gr

RIP, Mr. Takamoto
1970-01-01 00:59:59
To be honest, I'm kind of cranky today so I don't have a whole lot to write about. I do have one item I'll share...Y'all know I'm a cartoon fan, and thanks to Ed H., I know of another Hanna-Barbera stalwart that has passed on.Iwao Takamoto is familiar to those who are "credit watchers" and animation fans due to his long career in the cartoon industry. While with Walt Disney's studios, he worked on "Cinderella", "Peter Pan" and "Lady and the Tramp" (one of my personal favorites). He signed on with H-B in 1961 and started work right away on "The Jetsons", among other favorites. However, if this still doesn't spark recognition, I've got two words for you: SCOOBY DOO.Yep - Takamoto designed Scooby Doo and other characters for many of Hanna-Barbera's 1970's era cartoons. In other words, if you're approximately my age and were glued to the TV set after school and on Saturdays, you've probably seen at least one of his designs prancing across the screen. He also directed the '70

Little less grumpy day today, but some bad news...and other stuff.
1970-01-01 00:59:59
I normally don't ask this in my blog, but I am asking now...please pray for my sister and her family. My brother in law's dad was killed on Monday...he was hit by a forklift when leaving his workplace. My brother-in-law is an only child, and has to bear a lot of sadness right now. Also, my nieces and nephew have lost their last remaining grandfather, and my sister has to step up and help with many things while processing her own grief. As I said, I normally don't ask this, but if you could please just say a prayer for her family's peace of mind, I'd appreciate it...thanks so much.OK - now to the usual weirdness.First of all, I have to say I have finally found a real estate venture worthy of my interest. Yes, I am thinkin' long and hard about buying my own country. Why?I love a good saleI always wanted to be a dictator (is the female form "dictatress"?)That would be the ONE act which would motivate me to go to my class reunion. "Oh, you're a doctor? It's Friday, and I DONE be OUTRAGED!
1970-01-01 00:59:59
OK - this makes sense to me. I already told my mother she was NOT ALLOWED to watch "AI" (even though she wouldn't watch it, I feel like throwing my weight around from time to time just because...and she feeds my ego so it's all good.)The clip I've linked to today shows the infamous "Bush Baby" clip from this past week. However, it then shows the ladies of "The View" and my "buddy" Rosie O'Donnell discussing this. Rosie is upset about the cruelty of Simon Cowell, and rightfully so.But WAIT A MINUTE...Didn't Rosie make fun of Donald Trump's physical appearance (i.e. his hairpiece)? Didn't she imitate the sound of his voice in a non-compassionate way? No apologies there.Furthermore, isn't SHE the one who uttered the Asian slurs in another episode? Yes, she apologized for them, but she uttered them first, thus creating the need for apology. OH, and don't forget speculation on Clay Aiken's sexual orientation and Paula Abdul's sobriety...There's an awful lot of this mocking

OK - big surprise that I would think Jesse L. Martin is hot. But he is, I do, now shut up.Anyway...first of all, I must say, I do like the new Blogger. It's a bit tidier for those of us who aren't too skilled with HTML codes beyond "plug & chug". I lost some of my links but was able to get them back...I'll perservere...I'll fight to the finish...I'll exhaust myself trying to find more descriptors for getting the job done, so I'd better quit now.Next - do you remember the story of D acquiring the four pound can of tuna last fall, and the arguments therein? Well...he's topped himself.Last week, when he picked me up from work, I saw that he had procured TWO (count 'em) cans of pickles. Not glass jars, like Grandma used to do on the farm...hell no. We're talking about two tin cans, about the size of the largest coffee can sizes (three lb. cans of coffee, I mean). Each can has 99 oz. in it - I'm not sure how much they WEIGH, but they feel like a ton. (anyone good at math i

Oscar Tuesday, and other things...
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Yes, this year's Oscar nominees are announced. Yeah, some choices are predictable, some are not. It's typical Oscar time. I'm still PISSED with a capital P that Paul Giamatti was shut out for "Sideways" and "Cinderella Man", and I'll probably never get over it.However, some of the choices make me happy. I haven't seen "Dreamgirls", but I love Eddie Murphy and I really hope he wins. To me, it'd more than make up for him being shunned for "Nutty Professor". Then again, I'm torn because I also really liked Alan Arkin in "Little Miss Sunshine". I kind of wish I had him for a Grandpa, but hey - not everyone can be so lucky. Also, is Peter O'Toole turning into the Susan Lucci of the Academy Awards? I mean, COME ON! How many flicks has he been nominated for? As much as I love Forest Whitaker (in general - I haven't seen him in "The Last King of Scotland"), it seems to me that Peter is long due for a regular Oscar, not the "consolation" Oscar. Same with Martin Scorsese. I

1970-01-01 00:59:59
First of all - I'd like to show that I've made a few friends in the past few days. Some of them are in my sidebar, but people have come to visit so fast, I decided to list them here too.You can click on their names to get to their blogs: Mad Scientist, Margaret, Kathryn, Phil, Kiraa, Kilroy_60, Trev, and Star8278. Please go visit, and tell them Sudiegirl sent you. You'll have fun visiting their sites. More new friends will be listed tomorrow - I've added to the blogroll since the holidays. Now that these folks are part of the "Neighborhood", I'll get back to doing what I do best.First of all, I wound up NOT watching "American Idol" last night. Why watch Simon when you can watch "The Jetsons" and "The Flintstones"? Granted, most people my age would disagree, but if I want TV that's meant to make me happy, "American Idol" ain't it. So basically, if you want me to keep up with it, I'll have to be paid well and in a timely manner. Sorry - dem's da rules. If you want to te

Happy Day After Martin Luther King Jr. Day!
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Happy day-after-a-federal-holiday! I have a hard time coming back to the ol' grind, but thank goodness we have a few weeks in between this holiday and the next one. Sigh...Well, I've made some new friends this month - I'm glad. I enjoy making new friends...and keeping the old ones as well. Check them out in the sidebar...they're cool folks! One thing I'm debating - the new season of "American Idol" starts tonight. Should I watch? Shouldn't I? I really don't know...I mean, I make fun of Taylor Hicks as much as anyone (come on, you do too...admit it), but I don't understand the whole process. Plus, I want to clarify whether or not I really HATE Simon Cowell for my own reasons, or if I'm just a damn sheep and hatin' on Simon because it's the cool thing to do.Help me make my decision, gentle readers...Of course, we've got another winner...don't we always? Ladies & gentlemen, we have a recipient for the "Can't Win For Losing" Award...Recipient: Andrew "Jack" Whittaker

Too bad it's soiled by my writing. Aargh - oh well...that's the way it goes.To those who responded to yesterday's post re: my sister's family, I thank you very much. The situation regarding Ruthi's FIL still stuns me when I think about it. He and his wife had so many plans for retirement, and he'd even kicked the smoking habit and stayed off cigars for two years. "It's You I Like"...except for that hair color and those shoes...WTF??
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Let me preface this li'l essay with words from one of my fave children's TV personalities (and NO, it's not Soupy Sales). It's You I Like,It's not the things you wear...It's not the way that you wear your hair, but it's You...I like. The way you are right now,the way-down-deep-inside you,not the things that hide you...not your toys, they're just beside you. It's You I Like,Every part of you,Your skin, your eyes, your feelings...whether old or new.I hope that you remember even when you're feeling blue -that it's You I Like,It's You Yourself...It's You...It's You - I - Like. That said, I made the mistake of watching non-Boomerang television today. (I know - I was home alone - I just got a wild hair up my sizable ass...go figure.)Anyway, I watched part of "The Devil Wears Prada" on On-Demand (high-tech PPV). I missed it in the theaters this summer, and I think I'm thankful for that. Why? I had no trouble with the acting and even got some of the messages in it (appreciation

I've gotten lots of hits today - no comments, just lots of hits. I'd like to say thank you to those who came to visit today, for whatever reason. Your visits mean a lot to me, whether they're quick or lengthy. On this Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, it's more important to say thanks than it is to pitch a fit. So thanks. If you come back, great. If not, that's OK too. It's a big wide world out there, and I appreciate the time you did spend to come see me...no matter how you got here. Enjoy the rest of your weekend - I'll be taking tomorrow off to do important stuff to honor MLK Jr., like SLEEP, do LAUNDRY, etc. Smooches!Sudiegirl

This article is from today's Washington Post. I must admit, I like this paper a lot. I've read the Times before, and that's usually the paper "conservatives" prefer around this burg. Not me, though...I'm a Post girl all the way. The article in question discusses various high school honors programs (AP, et al). In my high school, we didn't have AP classes...we had courses recommended for "college bound" students, but no advanced placement stuff of any kind. We had ambitious folks who took college courses in addition to high school courses, but not that many. Let me lay out the first three paragraphs for you...Alyssa Smith, 17, was taking Advanced Placement classes at Woodbridge Senior High School in Prince William County. Her boyfriend was in the International Baccalaureate program at Stonewall Jackson High School near Manassas."I got an opportunity to look at his homework . . . and his work sheets were pretty simple," said Smith, now a senior. "We'd always have arguments ove

The picture to the left is me.Why is it me?Because I am having a hard time coming up with a post idea for today.I haven't even been able to come up with a "Moment of Dad" post, and usually those just flow out of my brain like water. It's also hard to know what my readers like...it's so easy to fall into a pattern. I don't want to deal with celebrity crap all the time, but I can really riff on it if I have to. Same with weird news and current events stuff. But is there a "magic formula" that keeps people interested? I wish I knew.So I guess I'm just going to write. Period. It's a ball-freezin' day here in the District metro area. BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR! Usually, the denizens of DC scream when it's like 35 degrees out with absolutely no wind chill. However, the complaints are legitimate today. Also, one of the things I do is call my mom every day (I've done it since my dad passed, just to stay in touch). However, she rarely calls me. Sorry I haven't left a post in a few days - when the weekend comes around, D and I have stuff to do. Then I nap. Then we do more stuff. Then I nap again (or sleep, if it's bedtime). I'm also trying to keep up with variety in my posts, so I don't do the same ol' schtick. One thing however - I am REALLY glad that D and I didn't take the Metro into DC on Saturday. Why? Two words - PROTEST RALLY. Don't get me wrong...I like political debate, and I DISLIKE the war and all the pain and sadness that go along with it. But one thing, above ALL else, clinched my final decision. I. HATE. CROWDS. Now, y'all might ask me this: "Jeez, Sudiegirl, if you don't like crowds, why did you move to thenation's capitol?"Well...that is a good question. And it requires a good answer. First question of the day -Is it possible to agree with someone's political ideas but be irritated as hell about her personality to the point where you wouldn't consider voting for her?Second question:Do I have to vote for a Democratic woman candidate just because I have ovaries too?(Gee, have you figured out who I'm talking about yet?)Furthermore, isn't it a bit EARLY to be worrying about this? Anyway, just a few too-short days until my next birthday - ughhhhhhhhhh. Oh well, another day closer to death...if I don't treat it as anything but, I'll be horribly disappointed.I'm going to try my very hardest to watch Da Super Bowl this year...between Billy Joel singing the National Anthem, Prince doing pre-game or half-time (don't remember which), and Da Bears playin', good times are ahead. I guarantee it. Even though I don't have HDTV or any of that crap, I'm gonna get comfy and listen to my boy Prince. I even forgive him for disregarding all of his "dirty songs".
