Freed Prisoner Goes Into Hiding
2007-12-23 07:23:11
MANAGUA, Nicaragua (Dec. 22) - American Eric Volz has gone into hiding after hastily leaving Nicaragua, where an appeals court overturned his conviction and 30-year-sentence in the slaying of his Nicaraguan girlfriend. The judge's decision to free the 28-year-old from Nashville, Tennessee, sparked outrage among some Nicaraguans who say the American received special treatment in the local justice system and should not have been released. In a statement broadcast on local television Saturday, the government denied it had acted on pressure from the United States. The U.S. "understands with absolute clarity that we don't respond to pressure," said Foreign Minister Samuel Santos, adding that the Nicaragua's justice system is "independent, and in this case, two out of three judges decided to free Volz."Increasing numbers of American have moved to Nicaragua - the second-poorest country in the hemisphere after Haiti - in recent years, buying up beachfront property and

Teens Charged in 'Mortal Kombat' Death
2007-12-23 01:55:41
Two teens have been charged with killing the 7-year-old sister of one of them by beating her with imitations of moves from the 'Mortal Kombat ' video game, prosecutors said. Lamar Roberts, 17, and Heather Trujillo, 16, were charged as adults on one count each of felony child abuse causing death, state prosecutor Robert Miller said in court documents released Wednesday and filed a day earlier. According to a police affidavit, the teens were baby-sitting Trujillo's half-sister, Zoe Garcia, on Dec. 6 while the girl's mother was at work. Zoe lost consciousness and stopped breathing after the teens hit, kicked and body-slammed her, imitating moves used in the video game, the document said. Trujillo and Roberts tried reviving the girl by putting her under running water and attempting CPR before they called her mother and 911, the affidavits stated. The girl died at a hospital. An autopsy showed she had a broken wrist, more than 20 bruises, swelling of the brain, and bleeding in her

Woman Married To 10 Men At Same Time
2007-12-22 20:58:03
Eunice Lopez, a 26-year-old woman from Miami, Florida, was arrested last week and charged with nine counts of bigamy when authorities discovered she was married to ten different men -- and divorced from none of them. Prosecutors allege that the woman has been marrying men over the past five years in exchange for money so that they could remain in the United States. In 2005, she married two different men within a period of two weeks. You'd think the clerk of court would start to recognize her face by now, if not her name. Considering all the legal paperwork one has to file in order to get married, it's rather astonishing that it took more than five years to pick up on this woman's multiple marriages -- not to mention the fact that the IRS might be getting curious about this woman's source of income. Well, the system caught up with her in the long run... the very long run. The charges say she married the men between 2002 and 2006 without divorcing any of them. In on

Lakota Indians Withdraw Treaties Signed With U.S. 150 Years Ago
2007-12-20 10:19:51
WASHINGTON — The Lakota Indians , who gave the world legendary warriors Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse, have withdrawn from treaties with the United States. "We are no longer citizens of the United States of America and all those who live in the five-state area that encompasses our country are free to join us,'' long-time Indian rights activist Russell Means said. A delegation of Lakota leaders has delivered a message to the State Department, and said they were unilaterally withdrawing from treaties they signed with the federal government of the U.S., some of them more than 150 years old. The group also visited the Bolivian, Chilean, South African and Venezuelan embassies, and would continue on their diplomatic mission and take it overseas in the coming weeks and months. Lakota country includes parts of the states of Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana and Wyoming. The new country would issue its own passports and driving licences, and living there would

Romney Aligns Himself With Bush in Iowa
2007-12-20 03:46:47
DAVENPORT, Iowa - Republican Mitt Romney aligned himself squarely with President Bush and his national security policies Wednesday, reaching out to GOP loyalists who hold the president in high regard, back the Iraq war and could sway the high-stakes nomination race. "I support our troops, and I support what our troops are doing. I also support our president. I believe that the president has acted in good faith and out of a desire to protect this country to do everything in his power to keep America safe," the Republican presidential candidate said. He spoke after touring the Army's Rock Island Arsenal near this eastern Iowa river city. Romney staunchly defended Bush in Iowa a few days after rival Mike Huckabee criticized the Bush administration's efforts in a Foreign Affairs journal article, denouncing a go-it-alone "arrogant bunker mentality" and questioning decisions on Iraq. The former Arkansas governor says his comments have been misinterprete

Helping Son's Parties No Laughing Matter
2007-12-20 03:33:01
LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. - The mother of a 13-year-old boy has been arrested for supplying nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, used during her son's ditch parties at their Lake Elsinore home. Maria Antonia Mendez was arrested for providing the gas used by the teens to get high. Riverside County sheriff's Sgt. Evan Petersen says the teens skipped school and hung out at the home. Police began investigating the case after a school officer noticed repeated absences of a group of students. Canisters of nitrous oxide were found by deputies serving a search warrant Monday evening. Investigators say the teenagers filled balloons with the gas and inhaled it. The sergeant says the 28-year-old mother also participated in the nitrous parties. She was booked for investigation of multiple counts of child endangerment and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Bow Wow Unable To Take Bet Joke.
2007-12-20 03:22:10
A flash of that hissy fit behavior Bow Wow says led to a cut finger and missed tour dates several weeks ago was on full display in leaked footage of a BET spoof interview that went horribly wrong. Omarion and Bow Wow were just beginning a joint interview for BET's "The Black Carpet" when Bow got upset, cut off the interview and stormed off claiming interviewer Touré was being too disrespectful with the questions. "Do you take moves from people like Chris Brown?" Toure had asked O. Toure also pointed out that Lil Wayne's chain is bigger than Bow Wow's, and praised O for being dope in the "Naked" video – which was actually Marcus Houston. Toure then began to yawn during one of O's answers. But it wasn't until he checked Bow Wow for using his phone during the interview that the young rapper freaked out.       "You pay my bills, bruh? Real talk. …Don't ask this man is he

Chaka Khan and Bebe Winans join the company as Sofia and Harpo, respectively, on Jan. 9. B2K member Raz B makes the claim that he, other members of B2K (including Omarion) as well as members of IMX (including Marques Houston) we're molested and also forced to perform oral sex on each other as young teenagers. All of this happened under the guidance of their manager Chris Stokes ! CHRIS STOKES RESPONDS! Here is the latest! Chris Stokes has denied the allegations of Raz B (Demario Thorton) and Ricky Romance ( Ricardo Thorton). See the statement below.   "The accusations that Demario “Raz B” Thorton and Ricardo Thorton have made are vehemently false and hold no merit. I have recently stopped financially supporting both individuals along with assisting them with their criminal and legal matters which leads me to believe they are resentful and looking to benefit financially from this. My family is my first priority and the reason why I have been so supportive of them. In bringing these false claims, they have not only slandered me, t

Will Smith Angers Jews And They Call For Boycott
2007-12-25 23:13:32
Welp, the Jews are pretty effin pissed off at Will Smith . Apparently he said something to the effect that Hitler wasn’t all that bad of a guy, and well, they took offense: Even Hitler didn’t wake up going, ‘let me do the most evil thing I can do today’,” said Will. “I think he woke up in the morning and using a twisted, backwards logic, he set out to do what he thought was ‘good’. Stuff like that just needs reprogramming. I can kind of see where Will is going with that, but according to the Press the Yamaka-donning Justice League of the Jewish community are outraged and demanding that Will’s movie “I Am Legend” be pulled from theaters:The Jewish Defense League is calling on Barack Obama to repudiate Smith’s comments, and wants theaters to pull Smith’s new flick “I Am Legend” from their screens. Smith’s words, they say, “spit on the memory of every person murdered by the Nazis. His

Clinton Erases Spitzer Endorsement From Website
2008-03-11 01:40:30
Faster than you could say "Client 9," Hillary Clinton erased Eliot Spitzer 's endorsement from her website on Monday. If you weren't under a rock Monday, you probably heard the revelations about Eliot Spitzer's foray into high-class prostitution. He was caught "arranging to meet with a high-priced prostitute at a Washington hotel last month, according to a person briefed on the federal investigation," the New York Times reported. At the same time, once the news broke, the Clinton camp wasted no time with erasing his endorsement from her website. Spitzer endorsed her in May of 2007, but it only took her a few hours to erase all evidence of that.Impressive, really, the speed of the reaction.

Pharmaceuticals found in drinking water of 24 major metro areas
2008-03-10 04:37:25
A vast array of pharmaceuticals - including antibiotics, anti-convulsants, mood stabilizers and sex hormones - have been found in the drinking water supplies of at least 41million Americans, an Associated Press investigation shows. The concentrations are tiny, far below the levels of a medical dose, and utilities insist their water is safe. But the presence of so many prescription drugs - and over-the-counter medicines such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen - in so much of the nation's drinking water is heightening worries among scientists about the potential long-term consequences to human health. In a five-month review, drugs were found to have been detected in the drinking water supplies of 24 major metro politan areas across the country, including Los Angeles. Water providers r

Longer combat tours increase risks of mental illness
2008-03-10 04:30:57
Could longer combat tours increase risks of mental illness ? It might be of no surprise, but government medics have found that the longer soldiers stay in combat, the more likely they are to have mental problems. Soldiers with three or more combat tours aren’t getting enough down time between deployment, according to the results from the just-released 2007 Mental Health Advisory Team study. The team surveyed 2,300 soldiers returning from their third tour from Iraq and nearly 700 more from Afghanistan. They found that noted nearly 28 percent of soldiers returning from their third tour showed signs of significant stress and mental health problems, which was significantly higher than the roughly 18 percent seen in troops returning from their first or second deployment, reports Stars And

Florida slavers are found guilty
2008-03-10 04:26:36
A Florida jury convicted a mother and daughter charged with enslaving and abusing a Haitian girl for six years before she escaped to tell her story. Evelyn Theodore, 74, and Maude Paulin, 52, now face seven to 10 years in prison for violating Simone Celestin’s 13th Amendment right to be free from slavery and for forcing her to work for them. Celestin, now 22, said that she was 5 years old when she was stolen from her mother and grandmother in a remote mountain village in Haiti and forced to pretend she was an orphan at an orphanage that Theodore operated with her husband. When Celestin was 14, she was taken to the United States on a work visa and, for the next six years, slaved away for 15-hour days with no pay. In 2005 – after years of beatings, no schooling, sleeping on the f

U.S. Catches Criticism For Its Treatment of Katrina Victims
2008-03-10 04:21:38
Rapper Kanye West once suggested that the U.S. government dissed Hurricane Katrina victims because President Bush doesn’t like Black people. Now, the United Nations is looking into whether the United States actually violated a treaty on racism based on the way the government is treating survivors of the killer storm of 2006. On Friday, a U.N. panel – egged on by two advisers who have called the U.S. government’s decision to raze a swath of ramshackle low-income homes in New Orleans “discriminatory” – will determine whether the violation occurred. But critics say that such a conclusion is not justified, arguing that the advisers never even bothered to visit New Orleans, and that they ignored the fact that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Developme

High Court hears the case of a Klansman cop
2008-03-10 04:13:33
A former Nebraska trooper says the state had no right to fire him just because he was a member of a Ku Klux Klan affiliate. Arguing before the State Supreme Court Tuesday, attorneys for Robert Henderson said that it’s nobody’s business that their client had joined the Knights Party, an active chapter of the Klan, because it never affected the way he treated people of different races. Moreover, Henderson’s lawyers contend, the state violated his right to free speech. “Since … Henderson has never deprived anyone of any right, privilege, liberty, property or employment because of race, he has not violated the public policy identified by the district court,” Vincent Valentino argued in his written briefs. “Henderson was fired for exercising his consti

Freedom isn't free: It's now 12 billion a month for Iraq
2008-03-10 02:47:01
It's not just the troops that are surging.  War costs are up for American operations in Iraq and Afghanistan* -- way up, more than a third higher than last year.  In the first half of this fiscal year, the Defense Department's "average monthly obligations for contracts and pay is running about $12 billion per month, well above the $8.7 billion in FY2006," says a new report, obtained from the non-partisan Congressional Research Service. Additional war costs for the next  10 years could total about $472 billion if troop levels fall to 30,000 by 2010, or $919 billion if troop levels fall to 70,000 by about 2013.  If these estimates are added to already appropriated amounts, total funding about $980 billion to $1.4 trillion or more by 2017.  McCain , at a town hall meeting in this Philadelphia suburb, was asked if he had concerns that anti-American militants in Iraq might ratchet up their activities in Iraq to try to increase casualties in September or October and tip the November election against him. The hardest thing in warfare is to counter someone or a group of individuals who are willing to take their own lives in order to take others."McCain also criticized U.S. Senate Republicans for not joining him and 28 other senators in a one-year moratorium on controversial spending projects, known as earmarks that benefit specific ci

Fox News' very own anchors are speaking out.
2008-03-22 15:24:38
Fox News' very own anchors are speaking out — and walking off — over what they perceive to be "Obama-bashing" on their network. On Fox and Friends this morning, hosts Steve Doocy, Brian Kilmeade, and Gretchen Carlson spent multiple segments sensationalizing a comment Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) made yesterday, in which he referred to his grandmother as “a typical white person” in some of her racial reactions. Obama made the comment while discussing his recent speech on race relations in America on a Philadelphia radio show. When the trio welcomed Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace onto the show, instead of previewing his show this weekend, Wallace announced that he was going to take his fellow Fox hosts “to task” for their “excessi

Cheney: Who Cares About the "Will of the People?"
2008-03-22 07:01:49
On Wednesday, the fifth anniversary of the Iraq invasion, ABC’s Good Morning America aired an interview with Vice President Cheney on the war. During the segment, Cheney basically said that the government shouldn't listen to the "will of the people." CHENEY: On the security front, I think there’s a general consensus that we’ve made major progress, that the surge has worked. That’s been a major success. MARTHA RADDATZ: Two-third of Americans say it’s not worth fighting. CHENEY: So? RADDATZ So? You don’t care what the American people think? CHENEY: No. I think you cannot be blown off course by the fluctuations in the public opinion polls. Whoa, American democracy is founded on the principle of the "will of the people." Yet Cheney
