Arsenal v Tottenham - Preview
2007-01-23 21:20:23
Balancing Youth with… Experienced Youth No sooner has the dust settled from combat with one enemy than another crawls into view. After a dramatic last minute home win against the soon-to-be-champions, back-to-back Anfield victories and a brilliant away performance at Blackburn, there is no doubt we ought to be ahead on confidence at least. Spurs’ form so far this year is poor, without a win in the Premiership in 2007. WHL has proven a difficult place to visit for many teams already, though, and much will depend on how much inexperience Le Boss decides he can get away with, particularly given the injuries to a few of our senior players. Mr Wenger has already promised a start to Theo Walcott, and naturally we can expect to enjoy more of the Beast, but where will the balance be struck amongst the rest of the squad? With a few injuries and Gilberto suspended, a test of our squad strength is inevitable. With RVP out for a while and the Premiership strike honour falling (excit

Julio Baptista Makes History
2007-01-23 14:49:37
The four goals scored at Anfield by Julio Baptista in Arsenal’s magnificent 6-3 victory over Liverpool on Tuesday, January 9th were the first "four" scored by an Arsenal player in the League Cup competition. The last time an Arsenal player scored four in any match was, not surprisingly, Thierry henry on April 16, 2004 at Highbury when the Frenchman scored four of Arsenal’s five against Leeds United. The last hat-trick scored by a Gunner, prior to Julio’s was also Thierry in Highbury’s final fixture, against Wigan Athletic on May 7, 2006 (won 4-2). The last hat-trick in the League Cup competition was scored by Sylvain Wiltord on November 5, 2001 when the Gunner’s beat Manchester United 4-0 at Highbury. One of the guides on the Club’s Legends Tours, John Radford holds the record for Arsenal’s youngest hat-trick scorer. "Raddy" was just 17 years 315 days when he scored three at Highbury against Wolves on January 2, 1965 (won 4-

"Bouncebackability"
2007-01-23 12:04:34
Much has been said (and hopefully done) about the current Arsenal sides lack of (for the want of a better word) “bouncebackability”, experts would have us believe that this along with their apparent lack of willingness to “mix it up” and indulge in the “argy bargy” is what has cost us. If not for that we would be challenging for honors rather than fending of the likes of Bolton and Portsmouth to secure a champions league spot. As easy as these reasons are to believe, I always found the second one a bit of a funny one. I mean who likes the “argy bargy” who likes an elbow in the face, a knee in the back of your thigh or a kick in the shins, its like bouncers in cricket- no one likes them, some deal with it better than others, that is it! Myles palmer over on ANR talked about how emirates needed this win, how the emirates as a stadium needed a first big scalp, a match that would be remembered. And how the fans needed this, to remember years

Van Persie out for at least 6 weeks!!
2007-01-22 19:36:03
Arsenal’s dramatic win over Manchester United has been tempered considerably with news that Robin van Persie has broken the fifth metatarsal in his right foot. The Dutchman has been nursing injury all week and after the clash at Emirates Stadium, his manager Arsene Wenger spoke of how he had not wanted his striker to play any part. However, with Arsenal struggling for an equaliser, Wenger had no alternative other than to employ his top goalscorer, who responded by converting an 84th minute leveller. His goal has, though, come at a real cost as Arsenal have confirmed that in scoring he broke the little toe on his right foot, in an injury that will likely see him sidelined for a considerable period. Thierry Henry sealed Arsenal’s victory with a stunning header three minutes into the injury time but it seems likely any jubilation in North London will be dulled by news of Van Persie’s injury. Thierry Henry believes Arsenal’s comeback victory over

Retribution!
2007-01-21 22:53:38
A lot of people, myself included, had 2-1 predicted for this game, and there were happy faces in the queue outside Ladbrokes (Block 130) at ten past six this afternoon. But the manner of the victory made the outcome twice as sweet as even the three points would suggest. The game itself (until you-know-when) was not the classic many had hoped for. Both teams defended tightly and with space at a premium there were few clear cut chances. That we had not conceded in the first fifteen minutes after a nervous start was one of the clearest positives. Rooney’s goal came ten minutes into the second half as the result of a very fast break from United involving the super-fast Evra. Presumably most people will have seen the highlights at least by now and will be aware of the major incidents in the game, so I won’t go into great detail describing action everyone is familar, suffice to say that we dominated more and more into the second half, with United looking dangerous on the counte

Could this be the BEST team in the Premiership?
2007-01-21 21:47:09
Arsenal came from behind to beat Barclays Premiership leaders Manchester United with two late goals at the Emirates Stadium. Substitute Robin van Persie had cancelled out Wayne Rooney’s early first-half strike with just seven minutes left, before captain Thierry Henry powered in a stoppage-time header to seal a dramatic win for the Gunners and signal their intent to have a say in the destiny of the title and the race for automatic Champions League qualification. Despite their defeat in north London, United remain six points clear of Chelsea in second place and 12 ahead of Arsenal. But Sir Alex Ferguson will know that lead could have been more convincing had they remained composed following what was at times a scrappy game, which until the closing moments never seemed destined to stick in the memory. It had been a positive start by United, playing in their blue change strip, with Ryan Giggs finding space 20 yards out for a curling shot, which flew just wide. Arsenal - withou

Apologies for the lack of posts recently - circumstances beyond my control have dictated my life for the past couple of weeks and I haven’t had the time to sit in front of a PC. The last piece I posted was just before Christmas and I stated that the 4 festive period games were all winnable. It has been 3 games since those 4 festive games and Arsenal ’s record is W6 D0 L1. That’s very encouraging and, except for the woeful performance at Sheffield United , it would seem the team is starting to settle / gel and the performances have been excellent. I’m not going to analyse these past 7 games as there are plenty of well written pieces on this site where you get the details. And so, Manchester United are next up on the horizon to play our rapidly improving team. For many Arsenal fans (including myself) this is the biggest game of the season. I know that Spurs are our more traditional rivals and we all simply hate The Team Formerly Known As Chelsea (TTFKAS) but there i

Cautious, cautious optimism…
2007-01-20 22:18:20
Before looking at the weekend, a word on Ralph, who has just joined our veteran’s side on the south coast. Dennis Bergkamp’s testimonial was a fitting tribute to a true legend of the club, and he deserves every minute of respect and adoration that he gets, but it is a measure of the club that such consistent, quality, but lower-profile players as Lauren leave in the manner they do. Lauren has been the epitome of solid professionalism for some time at the club, and we can only hope that Hoyte and Eboue have learnt from him. His penalty against Sp*** is a particularly fond memory. But it’s more the way he has left that struck me this week. With only one or two dim-witted Bentley-swerving exceptions, departing players invariably hold the club, and in particular the manager, in the highest esteem – with the sort of mutual respect that makes you proud to be associated with the Arsenal. Paul Merson wrote recently about the decision to let Anthony Stokes go: "On

The Big Match
2007-01-20 13:20:42
The Blues with their Russian money and those idiots in white from down the lane may be local rivals but there is something really special when the Mancs come to town. Paddy, Keano, Keown and Horseface may have departed these shores but games between us have always been eventful, expect nothing different this weekend.   What has been strange over the last year or two has been the change in relationship between our bosses who have gone from violence, to strong hate, to mild hate and most recently (and perhaps most disturbingly) to mutual respect. I still think they’d rather break a bottle of wine over  the others head than share it in a post match drink but there can be no doubt that there has been some serious chilling out on both sides. Now even the players are at it with Rio and Fab complementing members of the opposition! On to the match which is of vital importance to both clubs but for different reasons. First the science bit: United currently sit top of the p

Filling In For The Invisible Wall
2007-01-20 11:45:27
The euphoria felt by Arsenal fans since the team’s resurgence in the Northwest could come to a shuddering halt this weekend and 7 days on from Manchester United at the Emirates, the domestic season could be all but over for another year. Typical then that just as one of the team’s vital components has returned fit and in-form another is forced to sit out the next three matches. It was only 12 months ago that the majority of fans finally realised what it was that Gilberto Silva brought to the team. Before then all that was etched in most fans memories were countless misplaced passes and a reluctance to apply physical pressure on the opposition. Last season his absence along with several other factors almost cost Arsenal Champions League football, and this season his presence has never been greater felt. So in what is set to be another massive week in Arsenal’s season how will we cope without the midfield lynchpin. Firstly Rosicky, Fabregas and Hleb were absolutely out

Match Report: Arsenal v Spurs
2007-01-25 09:31:02
Bring It On! A game of two very different halves tonight as an Arsenal B+ team did us proud at the Lane. Everything looked to be distinctly un-promising for the return leg at the Grove with Spurs taking an early lead when Berbatov made the most of a mix-up between Almunia and Toure. The second also came as the result of an unfortunate defensive error when the Beast turned a free-kick into his own net. 2-0 down at half time, and things looked bad for us. Consistent with just about every tonne of praise that has been rightly heaped upon our genius manager and his young squad recently, though, the second half was a different story. As the first half had been dominated by Spurs’ quick passing and movement and ball-winning mentality, so we dominated the second. Whilst Ali remained largely anonymous throughout, the Beast has once again proven his quality. The equaliser was a typical Arsenal goal in many ways, coming as it did from a pitch-length counter attack, but particularly impres

The Comeback Kids!!!!
2007-01-25 18:19:32
Before I go into the game, I must announce my utter contempt for the ref G Poll for his truly awful display leading to the spuds second goal.  What an absolute c%&t of a ref he is. Le boss team had the back five that everyone predicted, in midfield was the surprise with Diaby starting on the left with Denilson in the centre along with the magnificent Fabs; with Theo starting on the right.  Up top was the same v the scousers.  Before the game I said to my father the first 20 mins are crucial to the way the game pans out. The spuds started brightly enough with Berbatov hitting the outside of the post early on.  The arse were knocking the ball around well enough but with no final product as the boys refused to shoot with the goal in their sights. The yids took the lead with some crap goalkeeping from Almunia as he was rooted to his line while Berbatov got between the centre halfs to nod home a simple opener. Bugger. Then that tosser Poll gave a free kick for bugger

Best Squad In the League?
2007-01-26 16:56:19
When it comes to talking of title challenges and prolonged campaigns the belief often uttered by many a lazy pundit is that Arsenal do not have the strength in depth to compete at the top.  There are many reasons to bilieve that this is the case, after all every summer now it seems we spend the boring months reading of how our rivals are signing fantastic players while we let some of our most experienced players go and bring in youngsters from around the world that people have neder heard of.  But this is truly lazy and a closer look reveals that arsenal must surely have the strongest squad the premiership has to offer, In the Carling Cup we have now twice in two years reached reached the semi-final with little or no first team influece.  Our youngsters have won at Everton, a team the first team could only draw with at home, and demolished a Liverpool team which despite what the press may have told told you was far from second string.  This season and last Arsenal h

Sam Allardyce will name is strongest available squad for Sunday’s FA Cup Forth Round against the Gunners despite the enforced omission of El-Hadji Diouf. The Senegal forward will sit out the first of a two match suspension at the Emirates Stadium follwing his red card at Middlesbrough last Saturday. Stelios, who netted the only goal of the game in last season’s FA Cup encounter between both teams at the Reebok Stadium, is poised to replace the African ace. Henrik Pedersen is back to full fitness and available for selection for a recent lay-off with an Achilles problem. However, Quinton Fortune and Joey O’Brien remain on the sidelines. It is the third season on the trot both sides have faced one another in the competition, with honours being split even. Allardyce knows that even if Wanderers are at their best it may not be good enough against the classy Gunners. He said "We’ll have to play to our best and every man will have to be at his peak because Arsenal

I hate Bolton-preview Arsenal v Bolton
2007-01-28 11:21:46
Right then.  Bolton at home in the FA Cup.  As per usual we have loads of injuries with, Djourou, Eboue, Gallas (please come back soon), Ljungberg, Van Persie, Hleb out and Gilberto suspended. The boss feels that Eboue and Djourou will be back for the game on Wednesday v the yids. Bolton are a team I really hate.  As written elsewhere, its not that I worry about playing Bolton its just I am sick of it!!  The constant moaning and whinging of Fat c%&t Sam, Davies, Nolan, Diouf et al drives me nuts about how they are small club blah blah blah blah. On to the players who are playing, I expect that Le Boss with stick with Alumina in goal.  The defence picks itself really given the injuries we have.  In midfield is where most debate lies.  We all now how Bolton are going to play.  They will close the midfield with 5 and hack it long to Davies who will elbow and cheat his way through the game.  Against Man ure in the middle we had the reliable

Some Good, Some Just OK
2007-01-28 22:42:23
Just back from the match. Presumably Sky Sports will have made the usual assessment of refereeing decisions (or lack of), and made the inevitable “Arsenal won’t relish another trip to the Reebok” style conclusions. I think the conclusions are all pretty obvious after today’s game: 1) We didn’t get started until the second half  2)  It was annoying to concede first again at home  3) We dominated once a goal down, and definitely deserved our draw, if not more. So rather than trawl through the incidents again, a reflection or two on some individual performances. THE GOOD Cesc Hard to add to the plaudits Cesc has been getting recently – the boy is a genius and we are lucky to have him. Although a few passes failed to hit the mark, margins of error are so fine, and by and large he controlled the game, again, with an extraordinary level of composure and touch in tight situations. Great free kick delivery for Kolo’s goal. Gael

Arsenal are reportedly leading the chase to land FC Brno defender Ondrej Mazuch. Bayer Leverkusen recently offered €1.5million (£1million) for the player, while Arsenal are believed to be willing to offer up to €2million after Gunners boss Arsene Wenger expressed an interest in the 17-year-old. Arsenal’s bid could be decisive for FC Brno majority shareholder Roman Pros who has stated in the past: "We will accept the highest offer." The club’s director Radek Belak told the Czech Republic’s Daily Sport: "We received a fax in which their chief scout Steve Rowley quotes Arsene Wenger saying that he is imminently interested in bringing Ondrej to Arsenal." Carling Cup Arsène Wenger will swap his Brazilians for the visit of Tottenham in the Carling Cup Semi-Final second leg on Wednesday night. Julio Baptista, scorer of both Arsenal goals in the first leg, has been ruled out with the groin injury he picked up in the latter stages

2nd Leg of Carling Cup Preview
2007-01-31 17:49:40
The Carling Cup semi-final between Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur remains finely balanced ahead of the second leg on Wednesday night, live on Sky Sports 1. The Gunners mounted a fine comeback to draw 2-2 at White Hart Lane last week and Arsene Wenger will be looking for his side to finish the job at Emirates Stadium. With their local rivals’ youngsters receiving praise from all quarters following the draw, Tottenham’s senior squad are out to prove a point and keep a potential avenue to European football alive - with Chelsea awaiting the victors in the final. Arsenal’s young guns have produced superb displays to dispose of West Brom, Everton and Liverpool to get to the semi-final, but their Carling Cup talisman Julio Baptista will miss the second leg against Spurs. The Brazilian - who scored both goals at White Hart Lane and four against Liverpool - picked up a groin injury in the FA Cup clash with Bolton and will sit out the clash that could hand Arsenal their first

Arsenal vs Tottenham Watch It Again!!
2007-02-01 18:09:17
Arsenal 3 Spurs 1 (5-3 on Aggregate) The Spurs first team got undone by our "bright young things" once again, though this time the necessary impetus came off the bench in the form of Tomas Rosciky, who chipped in with an assist and a goal to wrap things up on the night. The lads were once again a cut above the Spurs first team, but then football isnt just about being a cut above the opposition, its about scoring more than your opponents. And for all our dominance and possession being just a goal ahead in the dying minutes of a cup tie was always going to be tricky. It got a little more than just tricky when Mido got the better of tourre on a set piece (not again!!!) around the 85th and Spurs looked like nicking it for a while. I thought we had won on the away goals rule, but as it turns out extra time had to be played before any of that. We looked far better during extra time regaining most of our lost poise and the kids looking suprisingly calm, that didnt stop me from furi

Lamentable Spurs put to the sword
2007-02-01 16:31:33
The atmosphere was impressive last night - for once the drip-drip arrivals of latecomers didn’t seem to stop both the crowd and the team from starting at a high tempo.Arsenal ALWAYS play better at a high tempo. The number of home games where both the team and the crowd have been subdued this season in the first half at home has been amazing- Boro ,Sheffield Utd , Watford , Portsmouth and Newcastle all felt like Groundhog Day , with a lethargic fog settling over both players and supporters. But last night was different , very different. Why ?  It was ONLY the Carling Cup after all. Was it the fear of the first ever defeat at the Emirates being to Tottenham ?  Or did the much-hyped "youth team" rouse supporters who usually are content to sit back and wait to be entertained by King Henry and co ? How can the same 60,000 supporters be so quiet one week , yet so noisy the next ? Not that the arrival of the kids stopped some from berating mistakes - Walcott in p

Men Against Boys
2007-02-01 13:42:42
Once again, a wander back from Ashburton Grove utterly exhausted, satisfied, and sitting on the brink of a big endorphin rush courtesy of another thrilling Arsenal victory. ITV should take care of the highlights/flashpoints/talking points soundly enough, so a few brief reflections. 1. We deserved to win. No idea about possession statistics or the impact of bias on my opinions but from where I was sitting, we completely outclassed the Spuds tonight. Passing, movement, ball-winning, aggression, spirit, was all there in abundance, even if the goals themselves didn’t come until late in the game. Can’t remember more than one or two chances created by them, definitely all the weaker without Berbatov and Lennon, who apparently fancied some Marriott lasagne the day before. But isn’t that the measure of the clubs, that without one or two key players they looked utterly toothless throughout, whilst we played with class and flair whoever was on the pitch. 2. Denilson looks the

We're On Our Way…
2007-02-01 10:11:25
As if a trip to Cardiff after beating the scum 3-1 wasn’t reason enough to celebrate, I’ve just read the news Ashley Cole was stretchered off against Blackburn and it could be a cruciate injury. Karma is a wonderful thing. And so to tonight’s game… The atmosphere in the Emirates was highly charged with the 5000 or so Tottenham fans producing the best kind of reaction amongst the home support buoyed by the news Aaron Lennon was only on the bench due to a bout of illness. The first half was a tense affair with both sides having good chances to go in ahead at the break. Almunia rushed out to block well and clear when Robbie Keane was sent through from a hoof upfield by Michael Dawson in the opening 15 minutes and Malbranque should have done better when he arrived at the far post from a Hossam Ghaly cross unmarked close to half time. However Arsenal had dominated possession first half and Toure should have scored after playing a one-two with Denilson and following

Arsenal may have moved home but the magic that has always surrounded the club has not been lost. How fitting that our no. 7 should be the man to end Spurs dreams in the semi-final, just as Rocky did 20 years ago. The same thing happened when one of the club’s favourite sons died. After a humbling minute’s silence at Highbury in 2001, no. 7 Rober Pires cut in from the left and whipped a terrific strike in to the bottom corner in a 2-0 victory. Wednesday night was another great tribute to David Rocastle. There’s something about Arsenal. It happens all the time, Tony Adams sealing victory on the double season for example. We may be starting again in terms of building history around our home, but there is no doubt that Arsenal will always be Arsenal. As for Thomas Rosicky, he rose from the bench and really took the game by the scruff of the neck. He was everywhere, made the opening goal, and then sent Emirates in to pandemonium with the clincher (with the help of Ch

A Familiar Tale…
2007-02-02 10:00:32
Some things in life are guaranteed; New Years Eve will always be a dissapointment, England will get knocked out of a major tournament on penalties, and come July Spurs fans will be declaring that it’s ‘their year’. Just like the mosquito that buzzes around your ear for hours and hours, so Spurs fans drone on incessantly about how their latest big money mediocre purchase is going to put the final nail in Arsenals coffin and see them dominate North London once more. Of course we know it will never happen, and secretly they know it too. Didier Zokora declaring he turned down Arsenal to win trophies with Tottenham at the time seemed laughable, it now seems like the ravings of a lunatic. The difference between Arsenal and Tottenham you see is not just Class, Success and a Glorious History its now a question of philosophy. While they spend 8m a piece on Jenas and Zokora we spend 4m in total on Cesc and Denilson, who while needing a little bit of adjustment time will eventu

Theo's Teething Trouble
2007-02-02 17:59:08
Signed amongst a scrum of media attention, for a hefty transfer fee and dubbed the “next Henry”, young Theo Walcott’s introduction into Premiership football has certainly been a high-profile one. Some penetrating substitute cameos at the start of the season coupled with a handful of excellent U21 appearances and goals (most noticeably his brace against Germany) only served to increase the ferocity and desperation surrounding Walcott to near fever-pitch levels. There’s no doubting that Walcott’s performances have dropped over the past 4 or 5 games, in fact amongst the chorus of praise aimed at Wenger’s young Carling Cup stars such as Fabregas, Denilson and Diaby, a note of criticism and frustration has hovered over Walcott. Lacklustre against Liverpool and mediocre against Spurs, Walcott is perhaps the only players to emerge from the recent Carling Cup games that hasn’t enhanced their reputation. I believe that this point was made imp
