Goals Please!! 2007-03-03 12:41:19
We need a win today. We really need a win today.
Whilst it is not worth contemplating, it is nevertheless just possible that we might fail to win by two clear goals next Wednesday. Heaven forbid this should happen, but if it did, then our only consolation would of course be to finish in a Champions League spot.
That’s why we must win today, as following the PSV game are three tough away games at Villa, Everton and then Liverpool. A very difficult run of away games with Villa and Everton both playing well at the moment, and what is the likelihood of us making it three wins out of three in one season at Anfield?
It goes without saying that it’s goals we need, and lots of goals. But who’s going to get them? We have no option at the moment other than Aliadiere and Baptista, and to be honest even when Adey is back he has some way to go before giving us confidence in his finishing. Ideally we really need the midfield to contribute - like Bobby Pires or Freddie of a few yea Read more:Goals

3 straight defeats. 3 defeats in 3 cup competitions. Knocked out of the FA Cup and losing finalists in the Carling Cup final. Trailing 1-0 to PSV after the first leg of the ‘Champions League’. It could be said that Arsenal Football club have had better weeks…
What an utter cr@ppy week. Things can only get better right? Wrong – We’ve had numerous players banned for, amongst other things, ‘aggressive behaviour’, we have numerous players out injured and we can’t seem to hit a barn door with a banjo at the moment. But not to worry eh? The press have really gone over the top (no surprise there) and, quite frankly, I’m ashamed to be a fellow countryman of the cretins who write these so called ‘reports’. Its utter tosh and I’ve tried my best to ignore all the cr@p that’s been flying around and not to rise to the sly comments form my work colleagues. It’s all sadly predictable and what it ultimately means is Read more:Reading
Is Arsene Leaving? 2007-03-02 21:49:25
A very short rant today!
I don’t know about you, but I am getting a bit pissed off with football at the moment. Good for Arsene
for coming out and saying what he thinks about the crap way his team have been treated, which we all know is the truth, but at the same time you can just feel the media lining up to have another pop at him.
If he decided that enough is enough and bugger off back to France or Japan or wherever in the world his talents were properly appreciated, who could possibly blame him?
There is plenty wrong in this country when it comes to justice in many different matters and on many different fronts, but the bloody FA and the bloody media are making justice in football, absolutely totally bloody obsolete.
I suppose all the old farts in charge will be happy to go back to the old days when a really good entertaining and competitive game was considered to be two teams kicking three bags of shit out of each other.

Arsenal Vs Reading - Video Highlights 2007-03-04 16:24:54
Sometimes the simple things in life are the most satisfying.
After a week scattered with red cards, rash words and the bitterness of defeat, Arsène Wenger would have paid handsomely for a straightforward, controversy-free victory this afternoon.
And that is exactly what he got.
The victory came courtesy Gilberto’s penalty and Julio Baptista’s opportunistic strike at the start of the second half. An own goal from Cesc Fabregas made a nervous few minutes at the end and the Arsenal
manager was thankful to Jens Lehmann for his low save from Steven Sidwell at the near post. But the home side held on — and deservedly so.
This was the perfect fillip ahead of the vital Champions League tie with PSV at Emirates Stadium on Wednesday and the perfect response to three successive defeats.
Wenger had proclaimed he had only 14 fit players for this game. In the end his 16 only had two players who had not tasted Premiership action this season — substitutes Armand Tr Read more:Reading

Beauty and the Beast 2007-03-04 01:30:40
And I’m not referring to Julio Baptista here.
No, the beauty I’m thinking about is today’s match result, the look and performance of our midfield and central defence, plus some of our scintillating football.
The beast in this instance was Arsene’s bizarre substitution decision to bring on big Phil in place of Alex Hleb - at a corner! Surely the first rule of making a sub is never doing it when you are defending a corner or free kick! I would like to think that Arsene had some wonderful plan - way above the intelligence of the likes of myself - but he has, as you will remember, done similar things before with similarly disastrous consequences. Anyway the substitution badly misfired because as the corner came over Senderous and Baptista seemed to get in each other’s way and we gave a goal away.
Fortunately today it made no difference to the match result and the three points, (apart from giving all gooners very tight cheeks), but can you imagine if t Read more:Beauty

Reading Match Analysis 2007-03-03 21:01:51
After a disappointing week in the domestic cups it was critical to continue our now-fairly-impressive run of unbeaten games at home. This afternoon an Arsenal side (which looked strong despite injuries and suspensions, a real testament to Arsene’s squad-building) stood up to the mark and did the business.
Other accounts (and Scum Of The Day later) will cover Cesc’s howler, Cesc’s saved long range strike, the goals, etc etc. No doubt they will manage to weave in some anti-Arsene or anti-Arsenal sentiment too, but I’ll consider the details of the game covered elsewhere and just make some observations if I may.
Defensive maturity
The presence of William Gallas was, I felt, critical today. Gilberto started as the second centre-back and between them provided a solid basis for the midfield to be creative. Gallas really oozes class, reads the game well, takes responsibility, and has the pace to get where he needs t Read more:Reading

How do you rate Big Phil? 2007-03-05 19:27:58
I was been thinking about the Reading game earlier today, and having watched it a second time yesterday (boring swot aren’t I!) there are a couple of things that I would like to put to all you gooners out there.
The midfield and back four I thought were superb, and we never looked in any sort of trouble at the back until Arsene took off Hleb and brought on Senderos in the last 5 minutes. We immediately conceded a goal, and then Reading went on to make two further good chances to snatch an equaliser, and if Jens had not made an outstanding save from Sidwell, we would have cocked things up good and proper.
Now I really do like Senderos - his character, his loyalty, his determination and his strength and enthusiasm – but after watching the speed, positional play, and attacking options given us by the pairing of Gilberto and Gallas in the middle, I really do think big Phil is now fourth in the pecking order at the moment and, whilst it is hard to choose between him and Djourou Read more:Big Phil
Going for Silver 2007-03-05 12:43:40
Well that was better wasn’t it, 3 points in the bag and a welcome return to league football after 3 weeks of gallavanting around the country in domestic cup competitions and a brief, dissapointing stop off in Eindhoven. We even scored the first goal, albeit in the second half, and looked comfortable up until Mr.Senderos arrival into the fray which preceded Readings goal and a late period of sustained pressure that could very easily have ended with 2 points dissapearing. I don’t blame Big Phil but the substitution was uneccessary and invited pressure on to us…we live and learn!
I have to say it was good to see Mad Jens losing his temper with everyone, as some people have said it shows his focus and also our team spirit is clearly very good, but in our most successful periods we’ve always had a bit of an edge to the team. Lauren and Patrick Vieira were involved in numerous bust ups and it just means that everyone is desperate to win. Mad Jens while being mad is Read more:Going

Is Arsene only human after all? 2007-03-06 11:08:25
Well it wont be long now. At 7.45 tomorrow evening we kick off in the most important game of the season so far - and lets hope for a better result than the previous two most important games of the season, losing them both to the Chavs and Blackburn.
Yesterday I asked what gooners thought about the recent performances of big Phil, and there were many comments – most of them in agreement with my own sentiments that he looks slightly out of place in our current side.
I quoted a few instances of his costly errors including his failure to stop McCarthy from getting a shot in at Ewood. In retrospect this was unfair – the person really responsible was of course our manager for switching him to the position of right back.
What was le Prof thinking of? Senderos was having a really good game up to that point, stopping everything in the air - which was Blackburn’s usual route to goal – and was looking very comfortable at the heart of our defence.
Then when Eboue came off Read more:Arsene

Ade’s Wanted, Bendtner Wants It and PSV Are On Their Way 2007-03-06 08:47:33
With PSV looming large on the horizon I think we can take a few positives from the game at the weekend, even if Cesc’s own goal did put the frighteners up us for the last minutes of the match. If we can get at PSV the way did Reading for the first twenty minutes or so of the second half then we’ll have every chance to get the two goals we need to progress to the quarter finals.
It was brilliant to see Freddy rolling back the years and roaming the flanks with intent and although he perhaps should have scored at the weekend he looks like a more likely source of goals from midfield than his colleagues at moment. The real dilemma for Le Boss is who to play up front. Theo looked lively in a more central role especially when the game opened up in the second half and the Beast continues to find himself in good areas but is still found a bit lacking in his touch and decision making. If Henry isn’t past fit it’ll be a straight choice between these two and I would fancy Read more:Bendtner
The Fear 2007-03-07 19:29:56
Although I like to be positive i am also a massive pessimist and i’ve had a shaky feeling about this game since before the first leg really. I should say i go through prediction hot streaks, I picked us to beat Bolton in the Cup, even before then i had picked us to draw Blackburn in the Cup due to some comments by Mark Hughes after the league games. I said we’d lose to Blackburn in the Cup (mind you pretty much everyone did). And so as much as it pains me to say my gut feeling is that we are going to go out tonight. It will be close and i can see an away goals exit. However there is hope that my omniscience is merely on the blink and being interfered with by the ‘Fear’.
The fear is of course the fact that to many peoples eyes our season will be over come tonight, i don’t agree with them because i think the chance of second place is not only possible but also crucial to next seasons campaign, however it is fair to say a trophy chance does get everyone movi
Arsenal V PSV Review 2007-03-07 18:34:01
The win against Reading was massively needed as a confidence booster for tonight’s game. Make no mistake about it this is a massive game for us. We have never really been in the title race and were unlucky to loose in the carling cup final. Losing to Blackburn was bitterly disappointing leaving the club with only one hope of silverware. After all the good work in last year’s competition with such a young squad it would be gutting to go out at such an early stage to such an average team. After such an impressive run last season coupled with the arrivals of class experienced European players such as Rosicky and Gallas the least we could have expected in this year‘s competition was a quarter final place. The kind draw of PSV with the first leg away would have only have further re-enforced that belief.
Yet a fortnight ago the former ghosts of Europe that has haunted us for so long returned. There was a lack of urgency and pace about are game that we are famou Read more:Arsenal
PSV Eindhoven (Philips Sport Vereniging) Review 2007-03-07 17:45:27
So… tonight is almost upon us. I don’t think I would be being overly-dramatic in saying this is Arsenals most important / biggest game since a certain May evening last year. I’m almost as nervous today than I was then!
If we fail to knock PSV out of the tournament tonight then… well, it’s probably best not to go there at the moment is it?
Well, what can we expect from PSV? Not a lot really in short. Every man and his dog will know precisely what Mr. Koeman’s game plan is going to be: sit back, defend our lead and perhaps try and poach a(nother) goal on the break. So that’s about the game plan of about 80% of teams who have visited the Emirates Stadium so far. So no change there then. This means that Arsenal will have large periods of time when they’ll be in possession of the ball. So no change there also. However, where there is a change; it is ABSOLUTELY VITAL that we do not concede first - if that happens then divine intervention w Read more:Eindhoven

Tonight’s the night! 2007-03-07 11:17:39
Yes tonight really is the night! Forgive me, dear gooners, if I indulge is a few clichés. Tonight
is a massive, massive game and its probably goodnight Vienna if we don’t score two – or possibly even three goals. Yes we have to hit the back of the old onion bag tonight and get past the proverbial bus parked in front of PSV’s goal. If not we’ll all be as sick as a parrot – a bloody dead parrot!
My apologies for all that nonsense and let me get on with a sensible preview of the game.
We won’t know just yet what team Arsene will pick, but my guess is Thierry and Adebayor up front - with the Beast and Aliadiere on the bench - I would imagine a midfield of Hleb, Cesc, Gilberto and Ljungberg with Walcott, Diaby and Denilson as back-up, and, as there doesn’t seem to be any news yet about the fitness of Eboue and Hoyte, it must be a back four of Djourou, Toure, Gallas and Clichy - with Senderos on the bench - and Jens in goal and of cours
Fans Infuriating 2007-03-08 20:18:37
Rather predictably a great many of you are throwing the baby out with the bath water. It has been a miserable couple of weeks and i’m as upset as any of you, but seriously some of the comments i have read so far are ridiculous.
Sack Wenger. Sell Henry (apparantly we never replaced Ian Wright!!). The midfield isn’t good enough. We need to buy, buy, buy. Sell, sell, sell.
Just STOP!
All 3 competitions we have lost in the last 11 days were close defeats. Chelsea we played half a team of reserves and ran them close. Against Blackburn we failed to score but had stick on penalties denied home and away, they scored a thunderbolt. PSV scored a screamer away and we failed to score from a multitude of chances over 180 minutes. The theme there is a failure to score goals (i’d say we’re conceding one or two too many as well.) The reason we’re not scoring enough goals is because our two top scorers have been injured. As some people have said take Drogba and Lampar
A week a long time in politics? Try two weeks in football! 2007-03-08 16:35:30
Jesus where to start. Well first thing is that I’m getting awfully tired of the whole ‘we didn’t deserve to loose’ response from various members of the team. Every club will have games during the season where they didn’t deserve to loose but we seem to have a lot more of them than others. We played from 3 hours against a very limited PSV and we scored one goal, an own goal. There have been changes to the rules of football since the game started (the offside and back-pass rule spring to mind) but the general aim of the game is still the same. If you score more goals than the opposition then you win, if they score more than you they win. Every Arsenal player on that pitch last night knew at kick-off what they had to do to go on to the next round and they failed to do it. We can blame the ref, quote possession statistics, a negative approach from them, bad luck or what ever we want but in the end one not one of our players scored in 3 hours of football and t Read more:politics
Unacceptable – Planning for next season starts now 2007-03-08 12:44:34
We lost this tie not last night but last week in Eindhoven . Patience is a word that has been used consistently in the last few weeks to describe are game plan. Last week patience became strolling and we got burned for it. We took for granted are dominance and was expecting the first goal to come. Like so many games this season the first goal didn’t come and they undeservedly scored on the counter attack. Was it overconfidence, arrogance or just a lack of urgency and creativity? Strange words to read when writing about a team that includes Rosicky, Henry, Hleb and Fabregas. Last seasons run was built on the characteristic’s that make the Premiership the most exciting to watch in the world. The reason we destroyed Juventus , Madrid and gave Barcelona the scare of their lives was due to the pace, power and high tempo the Premiership is famous for. What happened to the electric tempo in this year’s competition?
We have heard time and time again players moaning and loosi
Reasons to be cheerful 2007-03-08 11:26:56
Cheer up gooners everywhere; it’s not the end of the world – although it does feel a bit like it this morning. Think yourself lucky if your going to work, for you can forget about football and keep yourself to yourself, concentrate on your job and shut yourself away from all those gloating Spuds, Chelski and Manure fans. Feel sorry for poor me ‘cos I’ve got to play golf later with two ‘over the top’ Sillywhites fans – it’s going to be 4 hours of absolute purgatory.
So what went wrong last night? It wasn’t the practicing of corners and dead ball situations, as we actually scored from one (though not by one of our own players) and their goal was unbelievable. Yes it was from in the corner but you have to say that Alex’s leap was simply amazing - I don’t think Tony Adams, Steve Bould nor Martin Keown all together could have stopped him.
Anyway I think we all knew, deep in our heart of hearts that we were going to b Read more:Reasons
Get a real striker, Wenger or write-off next season too 2007-03-08 11:20:57
Arsenal’s season is over.
And all through their own making. As usual Arsenal dominate, miss a hatful of chances, and then fall foul to a sucker punch from an inferior team.
Enough is enough.
Every top team in Europe has a striker
, Chelsea have Drogba, Barcelona have Eto’o, United have Saha and so on, and so on, and so on. This is someone whose only want, whose only desire on the pitch is to put the ball in the back of the net. For them there are no fancy flicks, no tee ups on the edge of the box, and certainly no doubt where the ball is going when faced with a split second decision as the keeper rushes out.
Arsenal are a team chock full of forwards; Baptista, Aliadière, RvP, Walcott etc, etc, etc. For them the beautiful goal is paramount and scruffy tap-ins are something that wakes them up at night in cold sweats. Sure, the team is fantastic to watch but the record books do not actually have any space to make a note of this.
Wenger
hates strikers because they do
Same Old Story At the Emirates 2007-03-08 08:53:37
The dream of going one further than last season in the Champions League is over for another year and as tactically astute and well organised as Ronald Koeman’s PSV were, we’ve only got ourselves to blame for crashing out. Lots of possession, a handful of chances but a lack of cutting edge punished by a more clinical side.
Arsene’s team selection was somewhat unexpected with Gilberto remaining in central defence alongside Willy Gallas and Toure returning to the side at right back, Clichy completing the back four. Denilson filled the central midfield alongside Fabregas flanked by Freddy and Hleb whilst despite all the pre-match talk of Henry being ready to return our captain started on the bench leaving the Beast to partner Adebayor up front.
It was a nervous atmosphere in the ground but the crowd soon found good voice as we came out of the blocks quickly. The extra impetus and drive of Kolo at right back gave us another option in attack and nearly paid early dividends Read more:Emirates
Is it the end for striker Henry? 2007-03-09 15:33:48
There are real fears now that Thierry will be out for the rest of the season. If it means him being back to his best for the start of next seasons campaign, then I for one am all for giving him the remainder of this season off.
Is he, however, ever going to be as deadly and fast again at the age of 30 (which he will be in August) or will we, perhaps, see the end of Henry
the striker
as we know him? I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see Thierry take a step out of the front strikers role and play in a similar position to the one played by Zinadine Zidanne during his latter years.
Thierry’s creativity and assists are already amongst the best in the premiership and if he were to take a step back at it were, we might well see another 4 or 5 years of renewed genius from the great man. Whether or not Baptista, Aliadiere, Adebayor or even Bendtner can be good enough to be the lone striker I am not too sure at the moment – on current evidence, probably not. But with Thi
Thierry Henry. Discuss. 2007-03-09 13:54:54
A tough time for us, a tough time for the club an especially tough time for ThierryHenry
. His season destroyed by a succession of injuries, undoubtedly linked to the amount of football he has played over the last 5 years has meant that his influence has been miniscule compared to the ‘usual’. We have missed him, of that there is no doubt. The real Thierry Henry
has been missing all season. Yes we’ve had glimpses, against Blackburn away, Manchester United in the last minute but no overriding influence.
Since Ian Wright joined the club in 1992 there has never been a season where we haven’t had a striker in the hunt for the golden boot. In the double season in 1998 Dennis Bergkamp didn’t score an amazing amount of goals but he was in and around the 20 mark. Then Anelka popped up for a season, and since then Thierry Henry has banged in 20+ goals every single season. It is an immense achievement he made the golden boot almost his own personal possesion. He w
Coffee anyone? 2007-03-10 10:24:01
I don’t know about you, but for me as an Arsenal fan, this weekend is an especially painful one, with nothing to do and nothing to read about and no doubt just spending the time trying not to see or hear anything to do with football on the TV and radio. I think I will get on with clearing out the garage and take the missus out to the garden centre and buy her a cup of coffee and a cake.
But I can feel my hackles still rising. The footballing world and media all seem to be laughing at us at the moment – taking great pleasure in kicking us whilst we are down. To get knocked out of the CL by a truly impressive player who I then discover turns out to be owned by the Russians is bad enough. Now the FFA (I’ll leave you to work out what the first F is for!) has added to the misery of us losing Thierry for the rest of the season by banning ‘innocent’ Adey for a further game. Should the Beast or Aliadiere pick up an injury in our next match goodness knows what we& Read more:Coffee
Henry Gives £15,000 Charity Gift 2007-03-11 21:18:16
Thierry Henry
has set an example to other Premiership players by donating a day’s wages to Britain’s nurses. Henry has signed up for the Mayday for Nurses Campaign, which is hoping to extract one day’s cash fromm all 556 Premiership footballers by May 13th - the end of the season.
For Henry, who earns around £100,000 a week, that means a contribution of nearly £15,000. Campaign organiser, Noreena Hertz, a 38-year-old economist, insists it is not too much to ask, considering the average nurse’s annual pay is £21,000.
She said "If you add up the daily wage of every Premiership footballer it comes to £1.5million. That would make a huge differnce to the lives of several thousand people. Given how tough life as a nurse is, it might make a difference between being able to continue nursing and having to quit."
So far, Noreena has secured donations from 12 Premiership players, including Manchester United’s Ryan Giggs and Gar Read more:Charity
Wenger Promised Summer Transfer Funds 2007-03-11 17:14:49
Arsene Wenger
has been assured that that his budget for summer transfers will not be affected by Arsenal’s UEFA Champions League exit.
The Gunners bowed out of Europe in midweek as they lost their last 16 clash 2-1 on aggregate to PSV Eindhoven.
Managing director Keith Edelman had hoped Arsenal would reach the Champions League final for a second year in succession, but he maintains the club’s financial plan had accounted for an earlier defeat.
Wenger will therefore be given a considerable transfer war chest, believed to be in excess of £20million, to bolster his squad in the summer
"It will not affect the manager’s budget at all. It certainly will not mean it will be cut in any way," Edelman confirmed.
"If we had gone all the way to the final it might have been increased, but the budget is set based on a exit from the first knock-out round.
"Arsene will have money he always knew he would have, regardless of the result against PSV Read more:Summer

The end of 4-4-2? 2007-03-12 16:31:44
In this brief interlude to the season we’ve all been able to take a step back and look at the wider picture. My thinking has been mainly about the future tactical shape of the side. Wenger has historically not been a fan of giving large contracts to players over 30. This means that someone like Gilberto is now entering a dangerous time, he will be negotiating a new deal soon and he may well decide that he wants a final big contract somewhere. That could mean we see him depart as soon as this Summer. That won’t be a good thing in the short term because we already lack experience and losing yet another of our first 11 over the Summer isn’t a great move. Long term however it will help us.
We have 3 quality central midfielders who are around 20 years old. To best accomodate them i think we will have to move away from 4-4-2. Wenger is as married to that as he is flowing football so maybe this is unlikely but i believe it could work. As it is Cesc and Denilson do not work
Roll On Wednesday! 2007-03-12 12:02:55
Having read some of the blog posts over the weekend, you would think our club is in a major crisis. Absolute nonsense of course, but it does infuriate me that, just because we have been knocked out of three competitions due to some bad luck and poor finishing, there suddenly seems to be an awful lot of ‘gooners’ saying that perhaps Thierry should go – and, even more ludicrous, that perhaps even Arsene should.
We are still playing some great football, but regrettably are simply going through a period when the ball just won’t go in. It happens. Should we begin to struggle to set up chances, then I might start to worry. Lets all wait and see how we get on Wednesday
shall we?
I did manage to grit my teeth and watch some of the cup games over the weekend, and I must say the bits I saw of the Chelski/Spuds and ManUSA/Boro games were quite entertaining. That the three clubs we dislike the most still haven’t booked their place in the semi-finals and will now have

So we face a tough trip to Villa Park tonight with plenty of first team players missing. We have no less than four players suspended, which for a team, which the data shows, commit the least amount of fouls, is a bloody joke.
This means no Kolo, no Adey, no Eboue and no Clichy added to the absence through injury of Alex Hleb, RvP and Thierry of course – seven players in all!
We should still have plenty left to beat Villa though, but it will be really interesting to see the team le Prof selects.
Will it be Aliadiere and the Baptista up front or will he decide to play Freddy up alongside the Beast? Midfield could be any combination to play with Cesc, and you can take your pick from Gilberto, Denilson, Diaby, Walcott, Freddy, Flamini and Tomas, however it would appear that Rosicky will only feature from the bench. I doubt if Arsene is considering sticking with the experiment of Gilberto at centre back, but I wouldn’t put my house on it. Assuming he doesn&rsq
