Driving on Loveland Pass
2007-12-16 11:46:00
Yesterday's weather maps did not show snow for Arapahoe Basin. However, the temperature was COLD. My thermometer read -7 degrees on Loveland Pass. Due to the high winds, the past three weeks of snow, and sub zero temperatures, the road in many spots was snow and ice packed. This type of driving calls for speeds less than the posted limit. Yesterday I noticed multiple drivers passing on the Loveland Pass. When they passed me, I was extremely nervous, as in scared for my life! So am I being a bit dramatic - I don't think so. If you are on a straight-away, go for it safely, but if you are on one of the tight curves at the top of the pass, and you really can't see that far ahead in the snow packed conditions, DO NOT PASS. You are going to arrive at your destination a bit faster, sure. But, can you really deal with the consequences of what can happen if it all goes wrong? I was behind a very slow driver yesterday. Rather than passing, I tried to keep a safe distance so he would

Grace Potter and the Nocturnals - Highline Ballroom November 30, 2007 - New York City, NY
2007-12-04 15:40:00
Grace Potter and her band The Nocturnals rocked NYC's Highline Ballroom last Friday. It was their first headlining show in over a month and it was obvious they were excited to be the main event. Much to the surprise of many shivering fans standing outside Friday was a sold out show. This lucky fan (after an unsuccessful attempt to sneak in the back door) was fortunate enough to be the proud purchaser of one of the last dozen or so tickets that was released. Whew! Thank god.Inside the crowd was jacked. Grace opened with "Sinking Man" then busted out "Here's to the Meantime" before letting her vocals soared through "Ah Mary." She was rockin' her Gibson Flying V guitar for a good portion of the night. Eventually she took her place behind her Hammond B3 organ to ride pulsating groove on "Treat Me Right." During this song the band lays in the pocket and Grace tells it how is. She's a great front woman. She's not afraid to be herself and can clearly hang with the guys. Although, to be h

POW POW
2007-12-03 19:06:00
Did anyone notice the large DUMP of POW POW that occurred this weekend in Colorado? I was fortunate enough to ski at Arapahoe Basin on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday was great, but Sunday was even better.Ski Boots are so important. A Rippin Skier whom I skied with on Sunday was sporting her new boots. Her comment, "It's' amazing how much new boots have helped me ski better." Just to understand, she totally rips in her old boots. Sunday, she was making amazing turns and gunning down the run. This proves how important it is to be in the correct boot. It doesn't matter what the brand is, just so long as it fits and performs to your ability. Also, a custom foot-bed will help you out.I look forward to my posting next week! I can't wait to get on my skis again on Saturday. I will only be skiing on Saturday because of prior plans to see the Denver Bronco's play against the Kansas City Chiefs. Until the next post, have a great day and we hope you enjoy our RippinSkiers.com You Tube Video

The Snow is Coming
2007-11-29 22:57:00
The weather is set to target southwest Colorado. Get out the rescue dogs. Put your Nintendo wii away. Stop watching YouTube.com. Turn on Pink Floyd or the Beatles if that's your choice of song lyrics. Walmart may run out of shovels. Craigslist will be swamped with people looking for extra Christmas money to go to Best Buy, Circuit City or play on eBay. Let's face it, Yahoo, Google, and Myspace will be slow in southwest Colorado. At the end of the day, photo sharing will be slammed. The NFL schedule won't even be thought of. Justin Timberlake, Led Zepplin, Pink, Bon Jovi, GreenDay, Eminem, Kelly Clarkson, Santana, Natalie Portman, Nirvana, Bob Marley, Fall Out Boy, Mariah Carey, Foo Fighters, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Carrie Underwood, Kanye West, Elton John, Maroon 5, Britney Spears, The Allman Brothers, AJ & The Bear, whatever your music may be, listen to it and ski! Because this weekend, they called for 30 inches of snow. That was exactly what I heard this morn

Colorado Ski Trips Are Being Postponed
2007-11-28 21:18:00
Breckenridge reports 9 inches of snow today. However, a rippin skier friend of ours, also known as Corn Muncher, postponed his trip to Colorado due to the lack of snow. This weekend is the 36 hour weekend at Keystone. Last year, I remember being in waist deep pow pow in the outback. This year, I will not be in waist deep powder at Keystone during the 36 hour weekend. Actually, nobody will be in waist deep powder. Unless of course there is some miraculous BIG DUMP! I'm not complaining, so please do not take it that way. Just giving you the facts. I am being patient, as I am sure many of you are. Keep on praying to the snow gods and our wish of a monstrous season will arrive! If you have plans to ski this season and there's not enough snow, just be like Corn Muncher and postpone your trip as opposed to cancelling. Have a great day!Watch the latest videos on RippinSkiers.com You Tube Video playerhttp://rippinskiers.com/rippinskiers@earthlink.net

Dave Matthews Band bassist Stefan Lessard said in an interview on Sirius Satellite Radio that while off the road he will be participating in an upcoming Warren Miller Entertainment Film. On November 20th while being interviewed by Sirius DJ Steph Scamardo. Lessard revealed that he and several other popular musicians would travel to a remote area to be filmed for a 2008 film release.Lessard, a snowboarder, will be joined by Barenaked Ladies singer and guitarist Ed Robertson as well as Guster guitarist Adam Gardner. Miller's ski films have always showcased a variety of music. This film will be the first to feature actual musicians rippin' it up.No word on the extent of Miller's actual involvement. In recent years he has taken a limited role in production of the films. It will still be interesting to see if these guys can cut it in deep powder or stick a landing off a steep cliff. Will Lessard's skills be "The Best of What's Around," or will he appear to be nothing more than "A Typic

Skiing in November
2007-11-11 17:06:00
Skiing in November in Colorado is fun! Arapahoe Basin is the only mountain I have been to this year. I have arrived no later than 8:15am on each of my five ski days this year. This was my first Saturday and Sunday ski weekend for the 2007-2008 ski year.Yesterday, I skied from top to bottom at A-Basin from 8:30ish to 12:30ish. It was my first solo day, so I experienced the fast moving singles line. I listened to Robert Johnson and then a Phish concert. Driving home, I listened to a Grateful Dead show from Dick's Picks.I skied again this morning. Top to Bottom was fast!!! Always a warning to anyone planning on skiing at this time of year...CAUTION...new skiers and snowboarders, as in brand new are daring enough to ski during this time.I saw the Montezuma Bowl yesterday. It is so cool to see a new lift station to the left of the Lenawee lift at the top. You can walk on the cat walk to the top and look at the terrain. There is so much diversity in the land contour in the Mont

SnoTrainer's Ski Exercises with SnowEast Magazine is a blog about training for the snow season. Today's article is titled How to Build Strong and Stable Ski Legs! Last year, we wrote an article titled It's Time to Start Training for the Ski Season. We believe training is important. This year, I have not trained as much as I did last year, although this year I have not been as sore after the first two days. It may be because of the new boots. However, it's still nice to not be too sore!SnoTrainer's Ski Exercises with SnowEast Magazine is a new blog. I recommend checking it out. You may find they have a great tip for you! This weekend, I plan to get in ski day number 3. Maybe even day 4!!! Keystone and Copper are planned to open this weekend. 2 Ski days completed during the 2007-2008 ski season. RippinSkiers.com skied at A-Basin twice. We took five runs. Ramrod was great. The snow was very nice. I slipped a few times on an icy surface, but that is to be expected. If you have any desire to start skiing, get out there. Both experiences have been great.http://rippinskiers.comrippinskiers@earthlink.net

Arapahoe Basin is Open - First Saturday of 2007-2008 Ski Season
2007-10-14 08:15:00
Saturday October 13th 2007 was our first day of skiing for the 2007-2008 ski season. Arapahoe Basin opened a few days prior. We arrived around 7:15am beating the traffic. I was not so concerned about the highway traffic as much as the ski traffic.Now...please understand...this is day 1 for us skiing on one narrow short run with a lot of people having the same idea. From past experience, I knew going into this the lift line would be about 45 minutes long and I mentally prepared to take 1 run definitely, and maybe if I got lucky with a lot of patience, I'd achieve a second run. Well, much to our surprise, we got in 5 runs. That's correct, I too was totally shocked - we skied 5 runs at Arapahoe Basin - WOOHOO!! The conditions were great. See...I grew up in Northeastern Pennsylvania. When you learn to ski there, you ski on many days of ice. The season is much shorter than it is in Colorado. Yesterday would have been considered a very good day of snow in Pennsylvania. As a matter of fact

19th Annual Enduro – April 16 at Arapahoe Basin
2008-03-05 15:40:00
This just came in on the Arapahoe Basin newsletter:It’s back for the 19th year – the Enduro! Last year Ollie and Jamie racked up 71 runs on the Pali chair, they claimed bragging rights for the second time consecutively – Can anyone beat them? If you think you have what it takes to ride the Pali chair for 10 hours lapping the same 20 routes, you and your friend should register or at least try it out! Registration opens on March 12th for those who have competed in years past and April 1 for all new comers. The proceeds from this year’s Enduro will go to the Gruber Family. Well-known local Michael Gruber passed away this year doing what he and we love - skiing and leaves behind his wife and daughter. The cost is $125 for all teams who have previously participated or has one person who

Snowing again in Colorado
2008-02-21 18:58:00
This morning, Channel 9 along with all other television news stations in Colorado reported another snowfall in Colorado. They called for 6-12 inches in the southwestern mountains of Colorado. These are knows as the Sangre de Cristo's. I found it amusing that their tone, all of them, portrayed the snowfall as 6-12 being normal. I heard it it as though someone would say, hey...we're getting an inch or two. That was the tone. However, it's really 6-12 that may fall. There has been just so much snowfall this year that 6-12 is the new 1-2 inches. To me, this is hysterical and AWESOME. Keep on snowing!!! rippinskiers@earthlink.net
