Compagna, 1858 A continuation from last week of copies out of the Degas Landscapes book. This Bonnat (originally in ink and black crayon) and the next few are from very, very tiny plates of examples from Degas contemporaries.

Wheatfield 2008-02-29 01:15:00 after DegasWheatfield and line of trees, 1892 Here I used the 4B pencil again and leaned on the side of it to make heavy marks. These massive forms are all over Degas landscapes. Big rocks and cliffs and wads of hills.
Landscape in the Orne 2008-02-28 02:15:00 after Degas Landscape
in the Orne, 1885 I really like this form a lot. So much so, that I'm going to make a big deal out of it. You'll have to stay tuned for that. Here's the original painting I worked from.
Mount Vesuvius 2008-02-26 01:15:00 After Degas View of Mount Vesuvius, c. 1856 It's probably because I've started teaching drawing again but after the self portrait, I suddenly had to draw. Not particularly interested in drawing any thing in the studio but I had a book of Degas Landscapes open on the drawing table. I started on page one, stopped at every image that intrigued me and seemed suitable for what I'm looking for and drew it. What am I looking for? Appealing and archetypal form in landscape composition.
Self portrait 2008-02-25 01:15:00 I'm not sure what got into me but late one day last week as the light was fading, I grabbed a small mirror, propped it up on the window sill and put a number 2 pencil to work. My real face is actually a bit longer but I like the drawing, so here it is!

After Fra Bartolommeo 2008-02-02 01:28:00 after Fra Bartolommeo (1472-1517)Farm on the Slope of a Hill, with a Winepress Under an Arbor I made this drawing last year and just came across it while preparing for next week's drawing class. I copied it from one of my most favorite books, Curtis O. Baer's Landscape Drawings. Baer writes "From Fra Bartolommeo, few drawings of landscape were known until 1957 when an album of forty-one sheets appeared on the London market. The volume was assembled in the eighteenth century, but it is likely that most of the drawings were done at one time. They have relatively uniform sizes, the style is homogeneous, the views are varied. It has been proposed that the artist drew them on his journey to Venice in 1508, or after he moved to the monastery of Santa Maria Maddalena in the Val Mugnone, 15

I have no idea what happened or how but if you happen to be reading this and have a clue, don't hesitate to share!Visit Landscape into Art and My Great Day.

after Maurin 2008-03-24 01:15:00 after Charles MaurinLandscape c. 1893vaporiser watercolourThe Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum,Rutgers University New JerseyAfter a bit of a hiatus, I'm back with the posts here. I began to develop some work from these drawings and decided to wait to show the original ideas until I was ready to show the developed work. There's not much information to be found on Charles Maurin but he developed, along with his friend Toulouse-Lautrec, an early version of the airbrush that he used to make his vaporiser watercolors. I've never seen one of these myself, and though I made this drawing from a black and white, two by three inch plate of one, it was really too small to tell much aside from the general forms.
Crest 2008-03-28 01:15:00 This is the structure for today's Effortless Breath watercolor at Landscape into Art. I'm thinking that it deserves a little more development than a small watercolor. I might put this aside for a larger piece.
