Stone Latern
2008-04-15 01:15:00
I doodled this up between looking over the shoulders of students. In class, I like to leave students alone to work on their own for a while. In these interims, I madly set to work thinking that I might be able to accomplish something then get anxious about leaving people alone for too long and leave off to go look over a shoulder and more often then not, grab someone's pencil (after asking permission).

The Bamboo Gate
2008-04-16 01:15:00
Some students just like to watch me draw and so I've surrendered to that and have learned to whack something out with minimal narration about why I'm making some mark and how I'm establishing some illusion. This is the last drawing I made for the Winter drawing class at Cheekwood and it's a fitting image for the close of another session.

Bare Bones
2008-04-17 01:15:00
Hmmm.... I was wondering whether or not to post this — it's so simple — but apparently have decided to! This is a five second bare bones of what I look out on every morning from my writing spot in my inner sanctum. Tomorrow I'll post a beefier version.

Southwest view
2008-04-18 01:15:00
As promised, here's a slightly beefier version of the Southwest view from my studio. I drew this on 7 April so there's still very little foliage in the trees. Aside from the fact that I've become a wus about working outside in chilly weather, the landscape around my house and this region is so riddled with trillions of tiny bare branches that I haven't been able to get a good fix on landscape from any comfortable vantage point when the leaves aren't out. But they're coming out now!Be sure to go over to My Great Day for some surprise Friday music or video.

Down the west hedge
2008-04-21 01:15:00
Although it mostly rained for three weeks, April 7th was a very nice day and I took advantage of the weather to get out and sketch. I didn't mind the rain too much because it's exactly what we're supposed to be seeing not to mention what we desperately need in middle Tennessee having been in an extraordinary drought over the past couple of years.Anyway, the tippy tops of the trees were just starting to bud that day and the grass was beginning to get a bit long.

I didn't get deeply enough into this one - could have worked up some darker values - but something distracted me and I quit before getting there. My songs and CDs

New plantings
2008-04-24 01:15:00
Is there any way to make an eyesore beautiful? Only through art but I'm afraid this is not a good example of how to. The dilapidated air conditioners are fit into hacked out siding and the wire fence is worse for the mulberry stump collapse. Still, I felt compelled to make a very quick drawing of the new plantings. From left to right there's sweet broom (barely visible but I hear it grows fast and tall), what was a radiant red-tipped photinia still reeling from the shock of being transplanted and an elaeagnus. They all are fast growers so with luck and good tending this section of the yard should be looking much better in no time.As for my sketch, well, I'll have to make a better one asap and post it just as quickly!Come to think of it, see today's post of one of my yard paintings at

Knocked over
2008-04-23 01:15:00
I have a regular stone birdbath inherited from the previous owner of this property. Sometime last Spring, I picked up a nice looking plastic bird bath. In order for the plastic one to stand, I need to post a rod into the ground for support. I've never gotten around to that and have sort of gotten used to seeing it on its side near the junior oak leaf hydrangeas, in front of the vines on the next door neighbor's garage wall. A little piece of yard art.My songs and CDs

Dogwood
2008-04-25 01:15:00
After a full day teaching a workshop at Cheekwood, I took a short walk through part of the gardens and made this pen and ink of one of the lovely dogwood trees in bloom. After feeding the felines and tending to the poor little opossum (who is still, barely, hanging in there), I brought this sketch out to the studio and in very dim light worked it up with water and some watercolors left in a plate from earlier this week.Come listen to a wonderful song over at My Great Day where you can read my list of favorite films with children. At Landscape into Art I'm continuing to show paintings of my back yard from the past year and a half.My songs and CDs

Great Horned Owl
2008-04-28 01:15:00
I made a couple of quick sketches of the Great Horned Owl in the outdoor educational area of Walden's Puddle then worked this one up at home with leftover watercolor and a bit of gouache. My model was rather annoyed with me throughout the sketching!See more at Landscape into Art and My Great Day.

Rainy path
2008-04-29 01:15:00
I am a scribbling fool! I am simply going with the flow because, as anal as I have been about my marks in the past, apparently these speedy, sloppy strokes are the order of the day and must be leading me somewhere. The question is, should I be posting these?!

Light before storm
2008-04-30 01:15:00
In the middle of this, I thought, hey - here's a pen and ink that wants to become a watercolor. Still working with some leftover pigment because it was there and the initial impulse was for ink alone but the light turned gold just as I was getting into the scribbling. Couldn't resist the brush and water. Not quite the gold color I would have more carefully mixed. I'll have to clean off this plate tonight!

after van Dyke
2008-05-01 01:15:00
As part of what seems to be the ongoing cleaning of my studio, I was filing away some sketchbooks from the past year or so and found markers in some pieces I think are worth sharing. Since this is in keeping with showing you watercolors of my property, it's good timing. Anyway, I'm developing the sketches I'm working on right now into watercolors so I'll show you them when I show the watercolors that come out.Today's marker fun is after an Anthony van Dyck pen and watercolor called Hills with Meadows, Woods, and a Tower from my (very) well worn Curtis O. Baer book Landscape Drawings.

Ginger Ale Reclines
2008-05-02 01:15:00
Here's more marker fun to leave up over the weekend. This is my elder statesman, Ginger Ale after a big meal on some dream rug.For a little more on Ginger Ale, you can visit his entries at Post Your Dog or Cat.

Casualty
2008-05-05 01:15:00
Sadly, we've lost a couple of birds who were startled into the studio windows at the wrong angle or too high a speed. This female cardinal was one of them. I used a regular pencil then went over parts with some watercolor pencil and finally, a little water.

Patio
2008-05-07 01:15:00
Every once in a while, I drag out my box of markers and play with them. I should take them out again soon! This little number was after some photo in a home and garden or travel magazine. I like it. Makes me want to go sit with you, a cup of espresso, talk a whole lot and then go for a walk.

Mountain Path
2008-05-08 01:15:00
I was experimenting with this sketchbook paper (Raffine made by Lana for Creative Mark) to see how it might take a good watercolor wash. It takes the watercolor fine but isn't very workable. Still - good for play time. That's what this little number was about.

After the first mow
2008-05-09 07:21:00
I should call this a contraposto study of a mower! It reminds me a little of R. Crumb. Well, it was the best I could do after an early workout at the beginning of what promises to be a long mowing season. I tackle my lengthy lawn in three sections; the lower 40, the mid-section next to the studio and just behind the house, and the front. I think I'll suspend membership to the gym for the summer....You can also see paintings of my back yard and various events in the yard over the past year.

Oakleaf Hydrangea
2008-05-15 01:15:00
My junior Oakleaf Hydrangeas are coming back to life. This is their third year in the ground but they're still looking small. Well, we'll see what happens by October...

Waiting...
2008-05-14 16:21:00
...in this case for a sandwich last week. I stepped outside on the porch of Sam & Zoë's café and made a very, very quick sketch of Forest Hills past some urban ugliness. Not my favorite sort of landscape and done while standing with no support but a stab at whipping out the sketch book at a moment's notice.

Hedge Music
2008-05-29 19:00:00
Here's part of the scene I am looking out on as I write this. My pen strokes are beginning to remind me of music. Hence, the title.See the painting I made from this, Hedge , at Landscape into Art.

Through studio door
2008-06-14 17:39:00
After several failed attempts at watercolors today, I gave up and sat down with a book on watercolor to see if it might work some sort of trick for me. Then I looked up across the studio and saw this through one of the door panels. At first I worked a sketch up on ratty newsprint then grabbed the pastels and worked over the charcoal marks. Although my pastel selection does not include any of t

Studio Garden
2008-06-16 14:44:00
Today, I thought I'd try doing a sketch before getting distracted with all the busy work. I had some pages left in an abandoned moleskine sketchbook so grabbed that and started in on this section of the garden with my Lamy pen. Parts of the garden were planted with mystery daylilies now showing themselves and I just wanted to look at these patches. The fluid ink on the slippery moleskine paper w

Mystery Lilies 1
2008-06-18 13:21:00
The mystery lilies planted in early Spring are opening now. More yellow than I was expecting but they're all lovely. These are a deep burnt orange with cool yellow centers.Unfortunately, I'll be out of town for the Middle Tennessee Daylily Association event so it may take some digging and time to figure out what varieties are now growing here.

Mystery Lilies 2
2008-06-20 01:15:00
More mystery lilies. These ruffled darlings are a pale, creamy yellow. In the fall, I'll replant them along the side of the studio in alternating spots with my blue hill salvia. They'll complement each other beautifully next year.

Calderwood Courtyard
2008-07-08 01:15:00
I put aside the first part of Saturday to visit my favorite museum, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. I put aside so much time, in fact, that I was able to take a leisurely coffee and muffin over this sketch in the cafeteria courtyard.

Woods Hole

I missed connecting with my friend mid-day so drove myself to Woods Hole for an extremely expensive sandwich. I made this sketch while waiting at the restaurant.

Mindy painting

On my way to the car, I walked by this woman painting away, gabbing to her friend who sat with two adorable dogs. I joined in the conversation while making this very scribbly sketch.
