Webtools4U2Use
2008-04-30 20:20:16
David Warlick turned me on to this site which looks like an incredible resource for all educators interested in using Web 2.0 tools in their classroom. WebTools4U2Use is a wiki that tries to aggregate all of the tools in Web 2.0-land into an understandable site, broken down into categories based on what you are looking to do online. From the Webtools4u2use website:The purpose of this website is to provide a place for K-12 school library media specialists to learn a little more about web tools that can be used to improve and enhance school library media programs and services, to see examples of how they can be used, and to share success stories and creative ideas about how to use and integrate them. Hundreds of free and inexpensive web tools are available for school library media specialis

I Can do this 24/7 stuff if I Just had enough Juice.
2008-05-02 15:48:48
I was in the Indianapolis airport when I saw this on the power outlet on the wall:Pretty clever I thought. Advertising the electricity on the wall. And each power outlet was of course, taken by a traveller with a laptop. Each power outlet in the terminal advertised for a bank or something, and each had some kind of clever saying on them. What I thought was very interesting, was that EVERY wall power outlet was plugged into, and a variety of devices were being charges, from laptops to iPhones and Blackberry’s. The demand for electricity far exceeded the capacity of the building, and outlets were typically not in convenient places. What this got me thinking about was how do schools plan to attack the upcoming drive to have one-to-to initiatives if the old buildings don’t have the capacit

Finding the Needles
2008-05-02 15:40:58
Recently, I went on a couple of recruiting trips for my school district. The trips took me to a Texas town about 400 miles east of El Paso and the other to a town in Indiana. Both trips were most enjoyable, and the Indiana trip was the first time I had ever been to that part of the country. Everyone and every place was a pleasant experience. Here is how recruiting works (at least at the two job fairs that I attended): You sit a table that has your school district identified somehow, in our case we have a 6 foot vertical banner and have some kind of something to hand out to the passing students, most of whom are ready to graduate and get jobs. We were specifically looking for math and science teachers so we even had a nice banner offering a $6000 signing bonus for coming and joining our El

Testing Speech Recognition Software
2008-05-05 22:10:44
So I decided to try MacSpeech ’s new MacSpeech Dictate software to see if it really could make my life easier. Don’t know much about that yet, but after installing it and “training” it with my voice, So, how accurate are these software packages? I designed a simple test: A 100 word passage. See how many words are missed. Calculate the percent. Totally unscientific. Totally biased.I decided to get my 100 words from the site “100 Word Stories”Here is the original 100 Word Story:"Remember close-n-play record players?"Sarah groaned. She was 30 years younger than anyone on the team, and nostalgia talk was code for "Sarah’s too young." Whenever she had a fresh ad idea, they’d start talking about old toys and cartoons that, conversations that shut her out and shut her up.Her bril

Real World Applications
2008-05-09 16:03:39
Look at the picture above. Go ahead, I will wait. Not anything out of the ordinary I suppose, to those people that attend training in their real-world world. This picture was taken at a recent meeting I attended that had education school technology directors from all over the place. Nice meeting, good people, lots of excellent networking going on. A REAL WORLD experience. Something that, perhaps, some of our current students might be interested in becoming a pert of when they become part of the REAL WORLD.But take another look at the the real world situation and soon you start to notice some things...Everyone is sitting in a comfortable chair, or at least it has padding on the butt and backA lot of the people in this picture have their own laptops. These laptops were not provided by the org

A real Smart Board
2008-05-09 11:11:46
It doesn’t take a genius to see the direction that interactive whiteboards will be heading in the future. iPod Touch, iPhone and a slew of imitators have introduced touchscreen technology to the masses, and the convergence of large screens (LCD or Plasma) with touch technology has already taken place. So, I don’t think it will be too long before interactive whiteboards just become interactive screens. Here are some examples of how CNN is using the Jeff Han interactive board from his company Perceptivepixel. Wolf Blitzer not included.Photo resizingAnnotation, ZoomingSo, I was talking to some tech folks from a large Texas district last night...they just purchased 5000 interactive whiteboards...I wonder if they will feel like thy should have waited if this technology becomes readily avai

Changing Your Mind
2008-05-09 22:45:22
I found this article on the London Daily Mail website: Modern Technology leads to brain damage.Essentially, the thesis of the article is that it has been shown that using technology actually physically alters the way the brain functions. If we ignore this and we continue to add pharmaceuticals on top of technology, the author thinks we are headed for big trouble, possibly even loosing our sense of

Learning 2 Change
2008-05-12 14:13:03
I had this video sent to me from Ed Newman. Thanks Ed!This is a great way to get the conversation going regarding 21st Century Learning Skills in the classroom. This small 5 minute video is full of quotable quotes that can be used in a variety of situations. The only concern that i had was that the luminaries in the group, well, some were vendors of those products that they mention as being useful

Smart Report I
2008-05-14 23:44:58
Today, the first part of a grant project I had been working on was set into motion. The STAR Grant was awarded to my school district in late 2007 as part of a Federal and Statewide effort to improve technology integration in the classrooms. While part of the grant was devoted to traditional professional development, the part I was responsible for was a bit more fun (at least I thought it was!)SM

Say, you want to produce a music video to promote your band but you have no money, no equipment, and no type of director to make a video for you.Where do you turn? If you are the British group “Get Out Clause” you turn to the worlds largest collection of Closed Circuit TV cameras: London! This group recorded t

High Tech--Low Tech

Today I was asked to be one of the judges of my district’s gifted and talented student robotic competition. The purpose of the competition os to get students excitied about technology in general, robotics in particular, and with problem solving, The students are asked to design a project that would simulate a Mars rover mission culminating with a Lego Mindstorm robot construction. Students are

Eating the Napkins My friend Kevin Honeycutt has a brilliant mind. I am sure you have met people like Kevin, people who have more good ideas in a couple of minutes than you or I could hope to have in a year. Kevin seems to always be trying new stuff, and, I think because he is an artist and author at heart, he is always coming up with some really good chewable quotes. Recently, I had a discussion

My “Amazing People” Part I
2008-05-26 21:38:30
I think that one of the great things about my four year skinny dip into the lake of educational technology has been the people that I have met along the way. I have been in education for close to 23 years now, and in the past 4 years, I have met, collectively the most amazing group of people that have simply amazed me. I think sometimes we forget how lucky we are when we see the complaints and bit

Barack Obama on Education Technology

Like McCain, not a lot on specific ed tech issues. Here is information fro the Obama website: * Reform No Child Left Behind: Obama will reform NCLB, which starts by funding the law. Obama believes teachers should not be forced to spend the academic year preparing students to fill in bubbles on standardized tests. He will improve the assessments used to track student progress to measure readiness

John McCain on Education Technology
2008-06-07 11:14:20
I decided to give my readers the education stands on the two candidates for President. First off is John McCain . From the John McCain Website:Excellence, Choice, and Competition in American Education John McCain believes American education must be worthy of the promise we make to our children and ourselves. He understands that we are a nation committed to equal opportunity, and there is no equal o

Testing the Pencil

I like Mark Bauerlein. I recently spoke with him about his book : The Dumbest Generation: How the Digital Age Stupefies Young Americans and Jeopardizes Our Future (Or, Don't Trust Anyone Under 30.) It is an interesting read, and if the number of comments on my site and others is any indication, he has hit a nerve that has caused the ed tech community to at least sit up and take notice. She talks about the importance of failure in one’s life and the power of human imagination. This is a very powerful speech, only about 25 minutes in length. I have includedall three parts so please listen when you have a chance.I think that Mark Bauerlein would be very interested in what she has to say

Attacks on Ed Tech are Increasing

This week I got my semi-annual “The sky is falling” email from the Consortium for School Networking and ISTE informing me that I had better write my congressman ASAP or the TITLE II-D E2T2 funding was all gonna dry up. (Now I don’t take any political stands here, but these messages always say that the darn president is gonna take our money away. Damn Republicans. They fail to mention that t

No Chili at NECC
2008-07-01 23:04:44
In El Paso , and in much of the southwest, there is a saying about food. Usually, the saying is about Mexican food, If the food is bland, or made for the masses, or “Americanized” then people will say it doesn’t have any “chili.” It is bland. No chili.I kind of have that same thought as I walked through and then attended much of NECC this year. No chili. There was nothing that really exc
