Samson strikes again
2007-09-25 12:38:59
Samsons Son scored his hat trick today when winning the Folkestone Racecourse for Weddings Handicap over a mile and a half today. Under top weight, John Best’s three-year-old - a son of his own broodmare Santiburi Girl - tracked the early leaders under Jamie Spencer before being shaken up to lead in the final furlong and comfortably holding off Mutadarrej to win by a length and a half. The dramatic increase in trip seems to have suited the Primo Valentino gelding - both his previous successes came over seven furlongs - though as his dam twice won over distances of ten and eleven furlongs it stands to reason that Samsons Son should relish the longer trip. New racehorses for sale
2007-09-15 10:36:30
The search for John Best’s next superstar has begun, with seven exciting yearlings from the Ocala Bloodstock Sales in Florida soon to arrive at his yard near Maidstone, Kent. With exchange rates between the UK and US so favourable for British buyers, John is looking to find more gems like Kingsgate Native - the precocious two-year-old colt who defied his elders to win the Group One Nunthorpe Stakes, having cost just 20,000gns as a yearling. John Best has an excellent record when it comes to buying young horses at budget prices and increasing their value dramatically though expert training and careful race selection. His Group-winning filly Rising Cross cost just £14,000 as a yearling but, having placed in the English and Irish Oaks, increased in value to £325,000. An even cheaper purchase - the £4,500 yearling Hucking Hot - was sold to America for a remarkable £75,000 after placing in a Listed race. The four colts and three fillies from Ocala are due to arrive in the yard

Heist a Hucking robber
2007-09-11 12:30:30
Hucking Heist lived up to his name today when launching a smash and grab in the 5.10 lingfieldpark.co.uk Maiden Stakes over seven furlongs. John Best’s son of Desert Style was making his debut under Steve Drowne, and showed his inexperience, racing outpaced and well detached before making a strong run in the final furlong to comfortably deny favourite Laura’s Best by 1 1/4 lengths. Hucking Heist was named after the infamous 2006 heist in which thieves stole £53m from the Securitas depot in Tonbridge. Money cages from the robber y were found in fields near John Best’s Hucking yard, while a getaway vehicle was abandoned in the car park of the stable’s local pub, the Hook and Hatchet. This victory adds to the success of the Hucking Horses partnership - all five horses have now won races for their owners. Bookmark to:

Dead heat for King After
2007-09-04 12:06:29
The ever-reliable King After forced a dead heat at Lingfield this afternoon when one of three horses in a blanket finish in the seven furlong Chips @ Williamhillcasino.com Handicap. Trainer John Best’s five-year-old son of Bahamian Bounty seldom runs a bad race and this was no exception. King After took a keen hold under Dane O’Neill and, despite some scrimmaging in the closing stages, kept on to beat Confucius Classic into third place and hold Magroom to a dead heat. This latest victory brings the gelding’s total haul of victories to six, five of which have come on the all-weather. He warmed up for today’s dead heat triumph when coming second over a mile at Lingfield yesterday and looks sure to continue his honest and consistent career. Bookmark to:

2007-10-03 14:08:12
Papradon got off the mark at Kempton today when taking the 18.20 Panoramic Bar & Restaurant Classified Stakes over 1m 2f. The Tobougg gelding chased the early leaders under Dane O’Neill before challenging in the final quarter mile. He soon took the lead and, though pressed approaching the final furlong, he was driven out to hold off the 2/1 favourite Ardmaddy by a length. Having shown little over the sprint distances favoured by his dam, Papradon had been showing more promise in longer races, and this contest clearly allowed him to play to his strengths. John Best’s son of Iron Mask had shown promise when making the frame in his previous race, and his experience told in today’s contest, only his third career start. 2007-12-16 14:56:39
Smokin Joe continued his good run of form this season when winning the Beaulieu Homes Handicap at Kempton over seven furlongs today. John Best’s stable stalwart was held up under George Baker in the early stages, and despite finding himself short of room when making headway two out, found his way through to go clear by two lengths in the final furlong.
