Nature Strikes Back
2007-01-19 10:39:55
This NASA satellite image shows the Ayles Ice Shelf collapse, center and below the open water, on Aug. 13, 2005. Within days of breaking free and becoming an island, Ayles drifted about 30 miles before freezing into the sea ice seen here along top of photo. relative location of Ayles Ice Shelf It was reported by The Week magazine that a shelf of ice the size of Manhattan has broken away from its base on the northern coast of Canada (near the North Pole). The Ayles Ice Shelf, which measures approximately 9 miles long by 100 feet thick, is drifting toward the oil operations structures in the Beaufort Sea. This situation is believed to be caused by global warming (the greenhouse effect) attributed to the burning of fossil fuels. Right now the massive sheet is frozen in place by seasonal ice, but come summer, it is expected to begin drifting again and could become a hazard to the very shipping stations and oil rigs that help produce fossil fuels! Isn’t that ironic?

Michael Richards Banned from Local Red Robin
2007-01-17 14:29:48
Red Robin ” that Bill and I like to frequent on weekends. I particularly like their Nacho Wraps and Whiskey River Chicken Wraps…but I digress. This restaurant has about 250 locations, but I have only been to three. These restaurants have as a decorating trademark various pictures, photographs, and old movie posters. One of the pictures I saw in several of the locations was Michael Richards’ character Kramer (from the Seinfeld show for those who you who have been hibernating for the past 12 years). You may recall that Michael Richards got in a spot of trouble a month or two ago when he used the “N” word several times (as well as other racial slurs) in response to some black men talking during his standup comedy performance. Pundits predicted the end of Richard’s career. I thought what he did was inexcusable, but I really thought this would blow over as things in the entertainment industry usually do (as did the Mel Gibson debacle). Apparently I was wro

What Would Jesus Do?
2007-01-15 10:22:07
The Spicy Cauldron. It involves the hypocrisy of Christians as they discriminate against gays: How can anyone opposing an end to discrimination claim not to be discriminatory? A Christian online petition states that gay people must be discriminated against if Christian liberty is to be maintained. Christians would never want to be homophobic or discriminate against homosexuals out of bigotry or prejudice. Christians of course earnestly desire the repentance and salvation of homosexuals. However, the Bible is clear that the only rightful sexual relationship for which we were created, is a relationship between a man and a woman in the context of a legitimate marriage. Consequently there are times when Christians need to be free to discriminate against homosexuals in order to make it clear that we believe in the Bible's teaching that homosexual practice is wrong. The mental gymnastics involved in formulating the above sentences are astounding. What utter tripe. The so-called Christ

Brotos at Large
2007-01-12 09:30:58
Brotogeris list. Some of us (including me) belong to Brotogeris Society International - we are dedicated to the conservation and promotion of the Brotogeris species (called “brotos” for short). I am actually running for one of the Director spots in the Society. The birds you see above in the blog banner are also brotos. There are three Grey-Cheeked parakeets on the left, and three Orange-Chinned parakeets on the right (on of them is Gobi). The word “parakeet” is actually a term denoting a small parrot, not a budgie as some might think (although a budgie is also classified as a small parrot). Anyway, the first little fellow is Brody. He is a Canary-Winged parakeet (remember, actually a species of small parrot) and very playful (photo by Moira Kelly). He’s been on this blog before (you may remember Brody from his encounter with the rubber ducky). Moira says Brody’s New Year’s resolution is to be more spoiled than ever - and that he’s off

Omar’s Exotic Birds where tame babies sit on clean perches, well-fed and watered and just waiting for you to pet them. We Lose Another One

photos by Crystal_Ineka Yvonne De Carlo died this month at the age of 84. You may remember her as Lily Munster on the 1960s sitcom “The Munsters”.  She appeared in nearly 100 movies during her career; one of these roles was as the wife of Moses in “The Ten Commandments”. At the age of 22, movie publicists touted her as “the most beautiful girl in the world”, but her talent for versatility is what got her plenty of work. She starred in many different genres of films, including drama, comedy, and the frequent sword-and-sandal epics.

Getting to Know Me

Seb’s blog and he did this meme. I liked it, so here goes!! 1. If you could build a house anywhere, where would it be? I really like where I live now. However, I will withhold judgment until I get to Australia. I have a friend in Adelaide that I’d like to visit. 2. What's your favorite article of clothing? Fleece tops. I have several different colors and live in them this time of year when the mercury dips below 60 in California. And I can’t live without jeans. I can’t remember the last time I wore a dress, and I don’t own a pair of high heels. 3. Favorite physical feature of the opposite sex? Kindness. Humility. Sense of humor. Looks come last, but I admit that crew cuts are a turn off for me. I like longer hair on men of all ages. 4. What's the last CD that you bought? Morrissey - “Viva Hate” 5. Where's your favorite place to be? Home around my hubby and birds, and around books! 6. Where is your least favorite place to be? Gynecologist&

How Many Politicians Does It Take to Change a Lightbulb?
2007-02-08 09:30:44
Subtitle: The dimbulbs are at it again In the name of the environment, a California politician wants our state to be the first to ban the use of incandescent lightbulbs in favor of florescent ones. Mind you, I am a big fan of the environment. I recycle religiously, try to conserve gasoline with my driving habits, and turn off lights at home that don’t need to be on. I keep my thermostat at a reasonable temperature and don’t use air conditioning much in the summer. But I have to draw the line at being forced to use fluorescents inside my home. I understand that they use less energy. That’s a good thing. But as a migraine sufferer, I don’t like the subtle flickering effect that fluors have. I have suffered many a headache at work when the light above my desk began to wear out. The “temperature” of the light is annoying too. I love the golden glow my incandescents emit, it makes my home cozy. I just can’t see fluors providing soothing light. If

Things I Really Dislike
2007-02-12 10:53:11
photo by oh that rachel! 1) Being stuck behind a bus or smelly diesel car or truck at a stoplight, choking as the passenger compartment of my car becomes filled with toxic gases. I have now learned to turn on the recirculating air and turn off the outside air, but usually some of the stink is already in the car. 2) When a waiter brings food and his finger is in the dish or plate (i.e. thumb in the soup) 3) Stepping in dogshit left by an inconsiderate dog walker. 4) Listening to the story of someone's life as they talk loudly on their cell phone. 5) People who judge others based on appearence or outward behavior without knowing any background facts. 6) Rush Limbaugh and his ilk. 7) That friggin’ tightly formed tough plastic that electronic items come in (most recently a computer mouse, travel drive and computer hub gadget). When you try to open up the plastic you have the potential of seriously cutting yourself, not just with the cutting utensil , but the plastic itself is razo
