The 183 member states of the UN's World Intellectual Property Organization are gathered in Geneva this week to discuss the controversial draft WIPO BroadcastingTreaty
[1]. EFF's main concern with the current treaty draft[2] - shared by the other 40 public interest groups, companies and industry groups that have submitted a joint statement[3] to WIPO this week - is that it is not limited to signal theft. Instead, it creates a set of broad and unwieldy intellectual property rights in the recording and use of fixed transmissions, which are likely to restrict the public's access to information in the public domain, preclude uses of works permitted under national copyright law, curtail consumers' use of lawfully-received programming in their home, and stifle technological innovation.
Over the last year there has been widespread support for moving to an alternative signal-focused treaty. Last Octobe Read more:Blogging

A startup company
developing chipless RFID ink has tested its product on cattle and laboratory rats.
Somark Innovations announced this week that it successfully tested biocompatible RFID ink, which can be read through animal hairs. The passive RFID technology could be used to identify and track cows to reduce financial losses from Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (mad cow disease) scares. Somark, which formed in 2005, is located at the Center for Emerging Technologies in St. Louis. The company is raising Series A equity financing and plans to license the technology to secondary markets, which could include laboratory animals, dogs, cats, prime cuts of meat, and military personnel.
Chief scientist Ramos Mays said the tests provide a true proof-of-principle and mitigate most of the technological risks in terms of the product's performance. "This proves the ability to create a synthetic biometric or fake fingerprint with b Read more:tattoo

SAN FRANCISCO - At some point in the near future, we may find out if a picture is worth more than a thousand words — maybe something to the tune of three to five years.
That's at the core of the debate over the placement of surveillance cameras in high-crime
areas of San Francisco, an issue that pits the left versus the very, very left — an ideological divide that in San Francisco is far wider than most people could imagine. And it's a gap that usually splits those who have seen or experienced crime and those who use their politics as a shield against reality.

RAW on book burning 2007-01-20 20:59:21 RAW
Source: Indymedia.org
by quote of the day Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007 at 10:52 AM
It was with some horror, and considerable indignation . . . that I reacted to the news, in 1957, that the U.S. Government had seized all the scientific books and papers of Dr. Wilhelm Reich and burned them in an incinerator in New York City. This was only twelve years after the U.S. had fought a prolonged and bitter war against Nazi Germany and I had been raised on anti-Nazi propaganda in which the Nazi "crime against freedom" in burning books had been stressed as much as their crimes against humanity in killing people. I was astounded and flabbergasted that the U.S. government was imitating its former enemy to the extent of actually burning scientific papers it found heretical. . . .

Is 24 Propaganda? Is The Pope Catholic? 2007-01-20 00:51:53 Talking heads omit fact that U.S. government, Neo-Con ideologues met with cast members to run PR for war on terror

To coincide with the start of a new season of Fox's much vaunted 24 program, MSNBC featured a debate asking whether the lead character, Jack Bauer, was a right-wing propagandist. What the talking heads and others that defend the neutrality of the show consistently fail to omit is the fact that 24 cast and crew members met with U.S. government officials and Neo-Con ideologues to run PR for the war on terror last year.

Cage is an accusation against our 'modern' society and its stereotyped people: everybody who prefer to accredit itself to the mass following stupid command than feel freedom to be as they are.

The importance of archiving 2007-01-23 20:13:38
Here's a blog of a painter in Prague, Czech Republic named Jeremiah Palecek who puts up 1 painting a day. That's worth a look in and of itself, but I particularly enjoyed his posting on the importance of archiving
.
Here's an excerpt from his posting on his blog:
"This is the way the Gmail login looks today. But who remembers the original webcrawler icon? For me, while this electronic image is merely a logo, the time period in which I used Webcrawler reminds of a certain period of my life as well as a very specific period of time in which I used it. By creating these paintings of digital imagery, Im not only archiving bits of nostalgia. I'm also organizing different periods of my life. Some days when I'm visiting a page I ve been going to for years and there's been a major site overhaul I almost feel betrayed. Where is my login button? Why did they change the banner? Something that has become automatic is slowed down a bit, and suddenly that gmail page I've been using for years
Independant Journalist involved in Army's Political Speech Lawsuit 2007-01-24 19:37:24 The Center for Media and Democracy announces the launch of Defend The Press, a new coalition of journalists, public interest groups, academics and citizen activists. Defend The Press is asking the US Army to drop its subpoena of Sarah Olson, an independent print and radio journalist based in Oakland, California, in the court martial of Iraq war resister Lieutenant Ehren Watada. Olson interviewed Watada in May 2006, and in June he announced he would not go to war in Iraq, challenging its legality. Watada's Army court martial begins February 5, 2007, at Fort Lewis, Washington.

The last step to freedom 2007-01-30 09:02:30 Just before the holidays I got rid of windows for the first time. I had already gotten rid of tv years ago but this turned out to be a little more touchy. In fact, it's still not over yet. The one thing holding me back is this file from a 3d program called Rhino. I need to have it converted into an .obj which I'm told can be opened in Rhino.
When this file is converted the whole project will run exclusively on free software.
