The Longest Mock Draft in NFL History Continues...A couple of quick notes before I get to the Jags selection.1) I didn’t realize that Tom Ashworth was a free agent that probably wasn’t going to return to Seattle next season. This greatly effects my “They’re one injury away from Tom Ashworth” argument. So if you read my Seattle Seahawks pick again, please replace all occurrences of Tom Ashworth's name with Steve Vallos. Blitzing the NFL: A Look at the New NFL Rule Changes for 2008 2008-04-03 01:11:34 The NFL has made their annual rule changes. Per usual, the changes are both good and bad. The most publicized change is the new rule allowing a defensive player to wear one of those quarterback-style microphone helmets. I've decided to call them Belichick helmets. I agree with this in theory, but I’m not sure how it’s going to play out in on the field. For one, you have different signals for the defensive backs and the front seven. Since you’re only allowed one Belichick helmet on the field at a time, you’ll still potentially have to send in hand-signals to one group or the other. And I’m not 100-percent clear on how substitutions are going to work. I guess there will be a backup Belichick helmet. But for teams like the Patriots, who rotate their linebackers
Ian Kennedy? Who Are the Yankees Kidding? 2008-04-04 23:47:06 If you believe the reports that surfaced during the off season, Johan Santana was an Ian Kennedy
away from become a New York Yankee. Ian freaking Kennedy? Are you kidding me? The same guy who was on the wrong end of a 13-4 defeat to the mighty Tampa Bay Rays? Seventy pitches and six runs in only two-and-a-third innings from the guy you just couldn’t give up to get Johan Santana. Against the Rays. How did I not spend more time on this when it happened? The Yankees
are a World Series-level offensive team relying on two rookies, two senior citizens, and an ace that hasn’t won a big game (or pitched well in a big game) since joining the Yankees. The reason why Chien-Ming Wang’s nineteen win season was “quiet” last year is because he didn’t have a single “loud” win.
An Open Letter to Matt Walsh 2008-04-03 23:35:04 Dear Mr. Walsh
,Enough is enough. It was fun for a while, but now it's just getting ridiculous. It's time to put up or shut up.Your insistence to draw out this Spygate drama as long as possible is beginning to effect my ability to enjoy the greatest sport on Earth.I just recently witnessed one of the biggest Super Bowl upsets in NFL history. Yet, I can't enjoy it because of this dark cloud you've cast over my team. Your insinuations and accusations have almost completely destroyed the NFL for me.Right now, I'm having a hard time being a fan. And it's because of you.The sad part is, I personally don't believe you have anything of substance.I mean, if you did, wouldn't you have come forward already? You claim this has been a strain on your family. Sweeping Success: Blue Jays Complete Weekend Sweep of Boston Red Sox 2008-04-06 21:54:09 The Toronto Blue Jays
would like everyone to know that the Boston
Red Sox and New York Yankees aren’t the only AL East teams with playoff aspirations. In defeating the Red Sox 7-4 on Sunday, they completed an opening season sweep of the defending World Champions. Dating back to last September, the Jays have taken seven straight from the Red Sox. For some reason, they just seem to have the Red Sox’ number. Well, everyone except for Roy Halladay, who even in a winning effort was touched up for four runs, three of them via the home run. Halladay, who is one of the most dominant pitchers in the American League, seems to have the same problem against the Red Sox that the Sox have against the rest of the Blue Jays’ staff. But is it time to anoint the Blue Jays as a serious co Read more:Success

Boston Celtics Complete Greatest Single-Season Turnaround in NBA History 2008-04-06 19:55:24 With Saturday’s win over the Washington Generals…err…the Charlotte Bobcats, the Celtics have had the greatest turn around in NBA
history. This really is something for my generation of Celtics fans. I was too young to really appreciate Larry Bird and the original big three. For the most part, the Celtics have been a laughing stock almost my entire sports-life. While teams like Detroit and Chicago went through good-bad-good cycles, the Celtics remained consistently bad (save for a few REALLY down seasons in the Eastern Conference). It’s amazing how all of the Boston
Sports teams that don’t play on ice have followed the same path. 1) Horrible ownership leads to years of inept front office decisions and horrible teams. 2) Ownership finally decides to sell the team. 3) Read more:Greatest

Bygones, Shmygones: Bill Buckner Ruins Red Sox Opening Day Celebration 2008-04-08 23:58:06 I’m not a huge fan of overblown championship ring celebrations prior to a regular season game in the following season. I’d much rather the teams get it over with during the offseason. I’m sorry, I know I’m a party-pooper, but I just don’t particularly like having my sports team looking back at the previous year once the new one has already started. The 2008 Red Sox have nothing to do with the 2007 Red Sox. The 2008 season should not be impacted by the 2007 season. There’s a contingent of Red Sox fans who believed that the 2005 Red Sox should have gotten a pass because the 2004 Red Sox won a championship. That’s complete balderdash. If I’m spending $400 to bring my family to a Red Sox game (not counting parking and food, of course), then the Red Sox should Read more:Ruins
MLB Notebook: New Steroid Policy, Same Old Red Sox, and a Buckner Follow-Up 2008-04-12 00:19:49 MLB Enacts New Drug Policy
The Mitchell Report made for some fantastic bathroom reading back when it first came out. MLB’s new drug policy, while not as entertaining, is certainly worth reading as well. The new policy starts by letting Jose Guillen and Jay Gibbons off the hook, repealing their 15-game suspensions. The only surprise here is that Jay Gibbons is still on a professional baseball team somewhere. They also decided that the players named in the Mitchell report will not be disciplined. No word on whether or not the players named in Jose Canseco’s new book will get the same protection. There is now an Independent Program Administrator, who will oversee the drug program for a minimum of three years. Not exactly the independent party that some were hoping for, but Read more:Notebook

Round One to Red Sox: Yankees Lose Two of Three in Boston 2008-04-14 00:37:09 They call it the greatest rivalry in sports, though Michigan and Ohio State fans may disagree. I think we can all agree that it’s the greatest rivalry in professional sports, anyway. It started with a dominating performance by Yankee ace Chien-Ming Wang (aided significantly by the Red Sox
’s anemic bats), included a nice outing (and win) by Josh Beckett, and ended with a shaky outing by Dick-K and a horrible outing by Yankee phenom Phil Hughes. Maybe the young Yankee starters are feeling the pressure of being chosen over Johan Santana, but they certainly aren’t tearing up the major leagues this April. Especially considering it was 30-degrees (conservatively) in Boston
on Sunday—not exactly great hitting weather. I jotted down some notes during and after all three games. Read more:Yankees

Why the NHL is Dead 2008-04-17 17:44:02 The NHL playoffs are in full swing, kicking off this week. The Bruins are playing the Canadiens, in what is a classic matchup with history going back all the way to the NHL's origin. The Pittsburgh Penguins feature what could be the most exciting player since Mario Lemieux in Sidney Crosby. The Washington Capitals have what could be the most prolific goal scorer the NHL has seen in many, many years in Alexander Ovechkin. There have been multiple overtime playoff games, great goaltending, great scoring, a completely insane guy waving his stick hysterically in front of a goaltender, physical play, terrible yet entertaining officiating, and an all-around exciting first round of the playoffs.Yet, nobody seems to care.Sure, you have your hockey purists who will follow hockey no matter what, but t
NFL Draft Day Entertainment: Look No Further Than the Oakland Raiders 2008-04-17 00:16:56 When I learned about this contest, I was pretty sure I was going to write a column about Matt Ryan dropping into the teens while pretending to not be counting every dollar he’s losing as the hours crawl by. But I figured Ryan was the obvious selection to slip now that the Dolphins have apparently decided on Jake Long, so it probably wouldn’t be an original idea. Then I thought about writing something discussing the Detroit Lions potentially drafting another wide receiver, but I figured that one would be done a few times over by a few other people. I gave some thought to writing about how entertaining it was to have a 16-0 team picking in the top-10, making a mockery out of an NFL system that actually stripped them of their own first round draft pick. But I assumed some othe Read more:Draft

Nothing Bruin: Why I Refuse to Care About the Boston Bruins 2008-04-19 00:59:58 I’ve been asked by a few of the hockey writers on Bleacher Report why I haven’t gotten into the BostonBruins
this season. I've been told that they’re a gritty, exciting team that busts their butts every time they take the ice. They’re a good group of guys who love the game of hockey. They have a great mix of young and old, and a core of players that they can build around for years to come. They’ve even managed to win a few games against the big, bad Canadiens this week. But I’m not interested. I can’t be interested. I’ve played that game too many times before, and every time I've lost painfully. I will not be suckered by the Boston Bruins again. So, without further adieu, the top-10 reasons why I will never, EVER root for or care about the Bruins again. 1 Read more:Nothing

SeanMC Must Win Every Contest 2008-04-20 23:11:34 There are two contests going on at Bleacher Report right now, both of which I'm entered in. The first is a "most hits on a draft article" contest, which has a first prize of two tickets to Patriots' opening day. I'm solidly in second place right now, I need help jumping into first. So check out my attempt to knock Raider fans down a peg and win this contest by clicking here. The second contest is an NBA Beat Writer contest, where we play beat writer for an NBA team and the person who gets the most hits throughout the playoffs wins. Long Shot: Dolphins To Draft OT Long, Agree To Five-Year Deal 2008-04-23 00:49:34 The Miami Dolphins
are off the clock. Jake Long and the Miami Dolphins agreed to a five-year, $57.75 million contract with $30 million guaranteed —making him the de facto first overall selection in this weekend's draft.(He was also the first overall selection in Bleacher Reports’ Official NFL Mock draft.)Jake Long may not be the best player on everyone’s draft board, but in Miami, he’s the best fit among the elite prospects. The Dolphins don't believe Dorsey fits into their style of 3-4 defense. Team Parcells doesn’t believe Chris Long will either, projecting him as an out-of-place outside linebacker in their system. Vernon Gholston is a fit, but way too much of a reach at number one overall. Plus, given the required financial commitment, an outside linebacker just isn’t Read more:Draft
Celtics-Hawks: Celtics Dominate Hawks, Take 2-0 Series Lead 2008-04-23 22:50:35 If you’re going to call out the opposing team’s fans, the least you could do is not get repeatedly schooled by a second year point guard. If you’re going to claim that Kendrick Perkins has no right to question your game one performance, the least you could do is not follow it up with the same type of performance in game two.Mike Bibby succeeded in doing one thing—he gave the Boston crowd something to boo. God knows the Celtics haven’t given them reason to this season.Rajon Rondo continued his impressive playoff debut, filling up the stat sheet with twelve points, six rebounds, eight assists, and four steals. Kevin Garnett took control of Wednesday night's game early and never let go, finishing with his fifteenth straight playoff double-double (nineteen points and ten rebounds). Read more:Hawks

NFL Draft Preview: Dorsey To Rams, Ravens Want Ryan, Pats Want Out Of Top Seven 2008-04-26 02:02:40 I’m not sure if I like Todd McShay because he’s a good draft analyst or if I like him because he’s not Mel Kiper. In any event, I’m enjoying him on both Mike & Mike in the Morning and on Sports Center. ESPN’s draft day coverage can’t hold a candle to the NFL Network’s, but since Comcast is evil I’m stuck with ESPN only today.Which means an afternoon of the two most annoying, pompous talking heads in all of sports, Chris Berman and Mel Kiper, Jr. (whose autograph, interestingly enough, I’m on pace to get in the Draft
Article Contest). Thanks to Team Parcells, the first pick lacks drama, as the Fins have had Jake Long signed for almost a week now—and we’ve known about it for even longer. The rest of the first round is steaming with drama. Heading into today, ther Read more:Preview

NFL Draft Recap: Chiefs Draft's Biggest Winners, Rams Biggest Loser 2008-04-28 00:10:32 I’m a fan of the new streamlined NFL draft. Thanks to the new time limit, I was able to watch the entire first round while still sober.Which, I have discovered, makes it much easier to report on the draft after that fact. There’s no good way to judge a draft the day after it happens. None of us know how these players are going to turn out. Sometimes the worst picks on draft day end up being the best picks on game day.But like our contemporaries over at ESPN (and in every sports section of every newspaper at every newsstand tomorrow morning), that's not going to stop me from jumping the gun and declaring the winners and losers of draft weekend. Patriots Draft Recap, Day Two: Pats Add Linebacker and Cornerback Depth 2008-04-27 20:15:19 The Patriots
were able to add to next year’s draft by trading their first of three third round picks to the Chargers for a 2009 second round pick and a fifth round pick this year. I love that the Patriots are always looking to set themselves up for next year’s draft. It’s just one of the reasons why the New England Patriots are the most dominant team in the NFL right now. For a recap of day one, click here. Third Round Pick (78th overall): Shawn Crable, LB, MichiganCrable is a pass rushing outside linebacker with experience playing with his hand both on and off the ground. He’ll step right in as a situational pass rusher and a special teams contributor. He projects to an outside linebacker in the Patriots’ system. Patriots Draft Recap, Day One: Mayo A Perfect Fit, Wheatley a Head Scratcher 2008-04-27 00:43:20 The New England Patriots
did what we all expected them to do, they shopped the number seven pick and sold it to the highest bidder. The highest bidder ended up being the New Orleans Saints, who wanted to ensure they could draft Sedrick Ellis. The trade moved the Patriots down three picks and netted them an additional third round pick (they also gave up their fifth round pick in the deal). After trading the pick, the Patriots went for a position we all expected, but a player nobody expected. First Round Pick: Jerod Mayo, LB, TennesseeI’m not sure anyone had the Patriots selecting Tennessee LB Jerod Mayo. Mayo is a very good player who can play at all three linebacker positions in the 4-3, and projects to an inside linebacker in the 3-4. He was an extremely productive player in college Read more:Draft

Celtics Upset In Atlanta: Smith, Johnson Power Hawks Back Into Series 2008-04-26 23:48:34 The Celtics went down to Atlanta

It was the Hawks that had answers for every question the Celtics threw at them. For forty eight minutes in Atlanta, it was the Hawks draining open shots from three point land and the Celtics missing their defensive assignments. It's Official: NBA Refs Have Money on Hawks, Celtics Win Anyway 2008-04-30 23:20:10 After five games, two upset losses, many inexcusable non-calls against the Hawks
, even more inexcusable calls against the Celtics, and many, many beers, I've come to the conclusion that NBA
officials must have put a significant amount of money on the Atlanta Hawks. How else do you explain it?Atlanta has taken 45 more free throws than the Celtics (155 to 110). The Celtics have been called for 21 more personal fouls than the Hawks. Even in a Celtics’ victory, the officiating was so excruciatingly bad that the game was hard to watch. Do the officials want to keep the series close? Did David Stern decide that getting the fans back in Atlanta was better for the NBA than a Celtic sweep?Click here to read the rest of the article...

Celtics Fail Road Test in Atlanta, Prove They're Not NBA Championship Material 2008-05-02 23:28:50 It was the start of the fourth quarter when I finally realized what I should have known all along: This Celtics team is not going to win the NBA
championship.I could complain about the officiating again, talk about the free-throw differential, and remind everyone that four of the six fouls against Paul Pierce ranged from questionable to ridiculous, but there’s a larger issue here.If it were just the officiating, I wouldn’t be stressed. I know the Celtics are going to win on Sunday. As Donny Marshall reminded us on the Celtics’ TV broadcast, most of the questionable calls going against the Celtics aren’t going to go against them Sunday at home. It’s not the officiating. It’s not the Hawks. It’s not a bad match-up. It’s not the Hawks being better than we thought they we Read more:Atlanta

Celtics Move On: "Old" Celtics Embarrass Inexperienced Hawks in Game Seven 2008-05-04 15:17:39 That was the team that won three games and forced a winner-take-all game seven? It’s amazing how hard it is to win when the officials don’t put you on the line forty times. After going to the line forty seven times in game six, and winning the game from the charity stripe, the Hawks
ran into a group of officials who weren’t willing to give them the benefit of the doubt, weren’t willing to let their own whistles decide the outcome of the game, and didn’t feel the need to keep the Hawks in the game. Not to harp on the officiating, but thirty-six points were scored at the free throw line in game six by the Hawks. They only scored eleven in game seven. This Hawks team was scrappy, but they weren’t nearly as good as Doc Rivers and the officiating crews made them look in Atlanta. Th Read more:Seven
How the Yankees Became the Red Sox 2008-05-03 20:27:35 The Red Sox' championship turn over the last few seasons has caused some unforeseen side effects. The formerly loveable loser Boston Red Sox have become the new Evil Empire. Their fans, who used to be looked upon with pity, are now looked upon with annoyance as they fill every ballpark the Red Sox visit. The "pink hat" Red Sox fans are another phenomenon altogether. I'm not sure what to think of this group, but I'm pretty sure they didn't exist before 2004 (at least in large numbers). Red Sox fans, a group that I am relatively proud to have spent my entire life a part of, are completely out of control — and deservedly so, considering everything we went through prior to 2004. But those side effects can be expected. What started happening in New York the day the Red Sox came back fro Read more:Yankees
Celtics 76, Cavaliers 72: Garnett Dominates, LeBron Lets One Slip Away in Boston 2008-05-07 23:09:10 I’ve decided that the normal, beat-writer type game recaps are, frankly, boring. It’s not that everyone on Bleacher Report isn’t doing a fantastic job, because they are. And to tell you the truth, I’m far more likely to read a playoff game recap on Bleacher Report than anywhere else. It’s just that I, personally, suck at writing them. Celtics-Cavaliers: Pierce and Allen Finally Heat Up, LeBron James Doesn't 2008-05-09 00:02:58 That’ll teach me to question the Celtics’ bench. All season long the “experts” have pointed to the Celtics’ bench, calling it their biggest weakness. It was supposed to be the thing that was going to prevent them from winning a championship (well, the other thing…but they can’t question the point guard position anymore). Once again, the Celtics’ bench proved everyone (including me) wrong. They not only were better than the Cavs’ bench on Thursday, but they were better than the Cavs starters. The victory for the Celtics began with the bench taking over the game towards the end of the first quarter.
