about commenting on the blog
2008-02-24 18:58:00
A few people have mentioned to me that the "comment" marker at the end of each post is either missing or has been replaced by overlapping yellow and green circles. I'm working to get this problem fixed soon, but in the meantime just click the yellow-green circles to comment. For those whose browsers don't show the circles, just place your mouse's arrow between the post's time and the envelope icon and click. The comments page should upload immediately thereafter. Sorry for the inconvenience.

6 months out
2008-02-21 15:37:00
Despite the blanket of clouds across the NYC area last night, I went out on my terrace to observe the total lunar eclipse but I was disappointed. Though I was able to pick out the moon's reddish hue behind the thick passing clouds, it was a challenge. The visibility was just poor. The spectacular viewing that I had hoped for never really came to be. Those damn clouds. . . . One source of delight, however, was being able to identify what I think was the planet Saturn. This afternoon I listened to the LLS teleconference, "Stem Cell Transplantation: Current Trends and Future Directions," which I found quite helpful. And finally, today marks 6 months since my transplant.

On Wednesday, I went to my dentist for a cleaning and checkup. All looks well even though I was told at Sloan that a filling had been cracked. Since I had that appointment on Wednesday, the usual day that I see Dr. Roberts, I saw him this afternoon for my weekly psych session. The IVIG treatment, which had been scheduled for this past Monday originally and then, rescheduled for the following day, was scrapped all together. My immune system seems to be doing its daily tasks well enough that the immunoglobulin boost produced from this monthly treatment is no longer needed. On Monday, St. Patrick's Day, I'm scheduled for another CBC as well as the anticipated PET scan that I referred to in an earlier post.In other news, the prints that I had ordered from both Imagekind and Shutterfly arrive

I've grown increasingly concerned and frankly, disgusted by the ugly slug fest between the Clinton and Obama campaigns for the Democratic nomination. Most recently, there was the controversy surrounding Samantha Power's characterization of Sen. Clinton as a 'monster' then, Geraldine Ferraro's incendiary comments about Sen. Obama, and most recently the big uproar about the inflammatory sermons of Obama's pastor, Jeremiah Wright. All of this tit-for-tat back and forth squabbling has hurt both candidates, I think, and moreover helped to create a climate in which the so-called Dream Ticket of the two candidates, which has been advocated by some, seems very unlikely to me at this moment. But perhaps most importantly, a continuation of these bitter, low cut blows has the serious risk of weakeni

Anderson Cooper Has Surgery to Remove Skin CancerBTW, I have been thinking a lot more about Obama's big speech since making my post yesterday, so I returned to that post and edited my remarks a bit. There's no doubt that his speech was a tremendous one. Only someone with his unique background and life story could have delivered such a bold and brilliant speech, which in time may spur on some meaningful social and cultural dialogue. However, I do hope that the news media will move forward to focusing more on the economy, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the other great problems that our nation faces. I do think that this ugly controversy is really about judgment not race and though it hurts me as an Obama supporter to admit it, he messed up. His judgment was poor with regards to t

Yesterday morning I was at Sloan for a CBC followed by a PET scan. I plan to call Dr. Castro-Malaspina's office on Thursday for results and have noticed since then a slight pressure in my chest. It's probably nerves. Jokingly, I think everyone knows the drill by now.Following the scans, I went up to the larger section of Highbridge Park in Manhattan where I explored the area for the first time. The Manhattan side of the Alexander Hamilton and Washington Bridges sits right in this section of the park, so I was eager to see what photographic opportunities I may find but it's a vast, desolate park (at least in the winter) which I must confess isn't the safest, most comfortable place to be wandering alone. This afternoon I received the prints from Imagekind that I had ordered and I was quit

(still) no evidence of disease
2008-03-20 18:29:00
On the eve of the seventh month anniversary of my second and hopefully, last stem cell transplant I'm happy to report that the PET scan which I received on Monday came back clean. There's no evidence of disease . Alli told me that the scan did show that the glass-like coating on my lungs remains but as before, they aren't concerned. In addition, the blood test that I took prior to the scan came back positive for the Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV), which as you may recall I dealt with in the immediate weeks following the transplant, but she stressed that Dr. Castro-Malaspina isn't worried. It may just be an anomaly. She went on to tell me that the strength of my immunity, as Dr. Castro-Malaspina had hinted, is within the normal range. At my last appointment, Dr. Castro-Malaspina brought up the s

I made a mistake when earlier I said that I had a bout with EBV. It was the Adenovirus not EBV which I was treated for during the first weeks after my transplant, but it is true that back then at one point a blood test did come back positive for EBV. It, however, proved to be an anomaly because the subsequent tests were negative. It seems to be an anomaly once again. Yesterday afternoon, Alli told me that Monday's CBC came back negative for EBV. They want me to return to the clinic on Monday for a follow-up blood test.Yesterday evening, I was in Highbridge Park on a shoot with three other Flickr buddies (whom I hadn't met before) doing long exposure photographs of the web of traffic around the Washington Bridge, which links Manhattan and the Bronx. It was my first time in Highbridge P
