Alonso to Renault ‘Imminent’
2007-12-07 09:36:54
I know a lot of people are wondering what’s up with Fernando Alonso now that Renault has been spared the sword of the World Motor Sports Council.  Well, there is now some news. It has been speculated that Fernando has been waiting for the WMSC’s decision before he gets serious about signing with Renault again, and now the door for talks has been opened.  Spanish newspaper Diario AS, as well as most of the Spanish media are now reporting that Fernando Alonso will sign a 2 year contract with Renault to start in 2008 and that this announcement is imminent.  It is reported that the contract will include an exit clause in the event that this new marriage doesn’t work out. WMSC Reveals Reasons for Imposing no Penalty on Renault
2007-12-07 09:06:19
Today the FIA released their statement giving their reasons behind the World Motor Sport Council’s final decision to not punish Renault despite finding them in breach of the International Sporting Code. In general, the ‘guilty but no punishment’ decision was reached because the FIA felt there was: ‘insufficient evidence to establish that the information was used in such a way as to interfere with or to have an impact on the championship’. When reaching the judgement, the council came to the conclusion that 3 of 4 drawings with details of McLaren’s gear box, damper design, and fuel system were either of no use to Renault or simply not used at all.  A fourth drawing Renault explained was only used to clarify whether a particular “hypothetical” system was within the rules and they had no intention of implementing the design in any way.  “The fact that Renault fundamentally misunderstood the operation of the system suggests that th

Ralph’s Schumacher’s Career Shutting Down
2007-12-07 06:08:56
Ralf Schumacher finished his Force India testing Thursday with with a realization that his career in F1 may well be over and that there is no plans for him to drive for Force India. It was a very difficult day for Ralf at Jerez on Thursday which included 2 spins and mechanical problems, ending up with Schumacher finishing the day 6/10ths slower than other Force India tester Antonio Liuzzi and slowest of all 20 on track.  It must be a bitter pill for the seasoned veteran to swallow, but he says it isn’t something that just came out of the blue.  He has admitted to thinking about the possible end of his career since the middle of the 2007 season “I do not believe that next year I will be here (at Force India “It looks as though that was my last ride in a F1 car.” “I now have to consider what is best for me. Maybe it means I will stay at home.” “Of course I am not blindly slamming the door, but it (any offer) would really have to make s

Renault Guilty but Free
2007-12-06 13:19:15
For race fans the unthinkable has happened.  Renault after being called before the FIA World Motor Sport Council in Monaco this afternoon to face charges of breaching Article 151c of the International Sporting Code were found guilty of unauthorized possession of documents and confidential information belonging to Vodafone McLaren Mercedes including, but not limited to the layout and critical dimensions of the McLaren F1 car, together with details of the McLaren fuelling system, gear assembly, oil cooling system, hydraulic control system and a novel suspension component used by the 2006 and 2007 McLaren F1 cars. This is not surprising considering the evidence presented, however the council did not impose any penalty on Renault.  Amazing, just amazing.. On Friday, detailed reasons will be made available.  Now the fall out! A Question for the Council
2007-12-06 10:31:14
Judgement day or not for Renault?  The recent ‘correction’ that McLaren gave the FIA (one requested by the FIA by the way) is highly suspicious given the late date and the slight minimization of the evidence against Renault.  Despite this suspicious ‘correction’ letter minimizing a few of the previous details, espionage did take place and evidence against Renault still remains far more serious than in the McLaren case, but will it be viewed in that context?  Renault is calling foul now and even threatening legal action against McLaren.  What this new evidence creates is a way out for the FIA  in making a decision they have already set a precedent for.  After all, how could they rule fairly when there are now two sets of evidence available for anyone to read.  This is something I can see as a possibility and would certainly give Renault leverage in possible legal preceding’s against McLaren, who seem to be relentlessly t

McLaren Stands Corrected on Renault Case
2007-12-05 16:15:50
McLaren, on the eve of the hearing against Renault have provided the FIA a corrected version of their case against Renault.  Rather than my usual rants and opinions, here is the version word for word. The FIA has asked us to correct certain factual errors contained in a press briefing given on our behalf by one journalist concerning Renault F1 and we are pleased to do so. The corrections are as follows. In our briefing, we stated that there were 18 witness statements from Renault employees admitting that they had viewed McLaren confidential information. To the extent that this implied that 18 different Renault employees admitted viewing McLaren confidential information it was inaccurate. 13 Renault F1 employees provided 18 witness statements and 9 of them have so far admitted they viewed and discussed the confidential technical information belonging to McLaren. We stated that the confidential information on computer disks was uploaded onto 11 Renault computers. This is not accura

Martin Whitmarsh on Driver Equality
2007-12-04 13:34:52
Today Martin Whitmarsh, CEO of McLaren commented on their ‘equal driver’ policy making world championship challenges that much more difficult.  McLaren have emphasized recently that despite the controversy surrounding Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton, both drivers are equal.  Now many race fans, especially those who aren’t McLaren fans will continue to dispute this, some passionately so.  Never has this been so prominent as when Fernando Alonso fans recently submitted a petition complete with what they feel is proof that Lewis Hamilton was the favourite driver in 2007. “It’s [equality policy] been daunting and challenging and that created some ‘interesting’ discussions,” “McLaren, rightly or wrongly, has a policy of equality, and I think people accept that we do a pretty good job of it. “This has made our challenges for world championships more difficult. “A de facto number one is easier and sometimes more efficient, but we believe

Alonso Fans Present Petition
2007-12-04 06:52:08
I’m not sure I heard this correctly, but it does appear that Fernando Alonso fans amounting to around 130,000 provided their signatures to a petition which when presented to FIA headquarters weighed 30kg. I knew this was happening, but didn’t expect these numbers. The fans are upset at Fernando’s 2007 season with McLaren and want to voice their opinions, admitting they really don’t expect any results, but just want to be heard. What they have provided is the petition is a letter to FIA president Max Mosley, and a cd-rom filled with irregularities related to Fernando’s year at McLaren.  What has upset these fans is what they view as unfavourable race strategies, alleged sabotage of his car, unfair penalties, and Lewis Hamilton not being penalized by the FIA for his breaches. Are they serious?  Yes they are.  Now, I’m all for fans having a voice in sporting matters.  After all, we do provide much of the money athletes and teams poc

Hamilton Speeding in France
2007-12-18 10:13:25
Lewis Hamilton on his way to his new home (so they say) did a little practicing on a French motorway and the police had issue with that. Lewis was clocked at 196km/h (122mph) in a Mercedes near the town of Laon. The actual speed limit on French motorways is a little less at 130km/h (85mph). The car was impounded and he was given a 600 euro (865 dollar). bbxxy42-1822a470d2-55 But Lewis did have a defense. he said the motorway was “very clear” at the time. Lat year when in France , my travels took me around the entire country and my speed never went over 180km/hr (oops). If I ever get caught, I will say, ‘but officer, the motorway was clear’. Alonso Back in the Car in January
2007-12-17 17:03:08
Fernando Alonso will be donning his new/old colours next month when Renault does testing at Jerez January 14th to the 16th.  He will be climbing into the car for the first time since the Brazilian Grand Prix, but it will be last seasons R27.  Next seasons R28 won’t be ready for release until the following week.  This is what I hear anyway. I am interested in both drivers lap times to compare with other teams that tested at Jerez earlier.  It should be interesting although not terribly important. bbxxy42-1822a470d2-55 This video is from all the British Fernando Alonso fans out there. Mark Webber's Feelings on F1 2007 season
2007-12-17 10:35:24
Mark Webber was asked his feelings on the 2007 F1 season recently and his comments I’m sure are echoed throughout the F1 fan world. Here’s what he had to say: bbxxy42-1822a470d2-55 “All the political and legal problems were a pain, because from a sporting point of view it was exciting.” “Michael Schumacher had gone, Alonso was a double champion and nobody expected a newcomer like Hamilton to challenge Fernando and Kimi Raikkonen”. “There were too many complications though. It makes it hard for the fans to understand how it all works. It would be better to just fill up with fuel, go to the track and whoever is fastest wins. Unfortunately though, it isn’t that easy”. Fill up with fuel, go to the track and whoever is fasted wins! I say, let’s go. For Now Dennis Stays Put
2007-12-16 08:53:49
McLaren team boss Ron Dennis is under fire once again as the fallout from the espionage investigation threatens to swallow him and the team.  Pressure for Ron Dennis to resign is mounting following McLaren’s apology to the FIA, Ferrari, and F1 fans throughout the globe.  The £1million investigation into the 2008 car has shown Ferrari technical data was far more widespread than originally reported.  However, Dennis remains defiant and at the time of this story is refusing to resign even as Mercedes, engine supplier to McLaren are reported to be very angry  it’s name although indirectly involved has been dragged through the mud. bbxxy42-1822a470d2-55 “I’m not going to quit. That is 100 per cent.” “I know there are people out there who want me to retire, but I’m not. I do not think it would be in the best interests of the team.” The apology given last week does seem to be a little bit of grovelling, but as each day

Prospects for the 2008 F1 Season
2007-12-14 13:26:19
Now that the McLaren-Ferrari espionage scandal is officially over, the teams can get back to the business at hand; preparing for the 2008 season.  We’ve read news story after news story about this for months now and it’s time to move on.  bbxxy42-1822a470d2-55 News stories we would all like to read have been pushed back in the pages to accommodate this mouth watering event and I for one am glad we can move on.  Writing on these scandals can be exciting and feedback and opinions, well, there’s plenty of it, but I’m looking forward to the 2008 season now and am hoping for a relatively clean season.  The team drivers have almost been chosen with prominent names moving about and looking at the drivers lineup as it stands right now, I see some great opportunities for a few notable teams and drivers. Fernando Alonso signing with Renault again is pushing the team to perform at a much higher level than in 2007.  Fernando quite possibly will h

Heikki Kovalainen Goes to McLaren
2007-12-14 11:25:11
The announcement came today that Heikki Kovalainen has signed with McLaren.  Kovalainen joins McLaren after he was dropped from Renault to make room for the returning Fernando Alonso.  It had been speculated earlier after pressure from Spanish Sponsors that McLaren may choose current test driver Pedro de la Rosa, but in the end Kovalainen was the obvious choice and Pedro de la Rosa will remain as test driver. The pairing at McLaren will be Lewis Hamilton and Kovalainen, two very young and talented drivers who had an impressive rookie season last year.  CEO Martin Whitmarsh sounded genuinely pleased with the signing and had this to say:  "We had a number of options open to us and as always we want to make sure that we have the most competitive driver line-up and I think that Lewis and Heikki will be a formidable combination" Kovalainen is very excited to be selected to join the team and has signed what is termed a ‘long term’ contract. Update on Singapore Grand Prix
2007-12-12 15:26:14
Organizers of the Singapore grand prix released further information regarding the night race to be held Sept 28, 2008.  The new street circuit which runs around the Marina Bay area will be floodlit and will be the first F1 race to be held at night.  The lighting system to avoid affecting TV cameras will be lined up down one side of the track and will light the track at 4 times the level of a sports stadium. The race itself will of course be 61 laps with fast straights and a series of very technical turns.  The pit straight, all of 500 metres long will allow cars to approach 300km/hr ending in a left hand turn that encourages overtaking. Along Raffles Boulevard, speeds also may reach 300km/hr ending in hard breaking through turns 7 and 8.  Cultural landmarks follow along St Andrews Road and Fullerton Road await the drivers for whoever is looking.  Turn 14 is hoped to showcase some exciting action as the cars fly across the 97 year old Anderson Bridge only to be

New Qualifying Rules Confirmed
2007-12-24 17:40:37
In a final note before Christmas is upon us, the FIA have released the final word on their tweak to qualifying in 2008. I posted a early speculation here about what changes may be in store. Here is the final verdict: bbxxy42-1822a470d2-55 The changes suggested in that article will also prevent teams from refueling their cars to levels started in Q3. This means all Q3 drivers will begin each race with the amount of fuel remaining in their cars at the end of qualifying. Others who did not make it to Q3 will be able to choose whatever fuel load they wish. Just as before. Reno Spiteri: OK, so Fernando will be testing initially on the R27 between the 14/16th January. This is good because that is the way to compare the performance of the R27 with the new R28 and to make the necessary improvements to have a competitive car for 2008. Renault have won championships with Williams through Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve. They won a further two championships with Fernando in 2005 and 2006 when they were racing Ferrari with Michael Shumacher. They have the resources, the expertise and now the driver. So there is nothing to hold them back to have the R28 up there where it belongs: No.1 on the grid. fast911ray: Correc

Qualifying to be Tweaked by FIA
2007-12-23 07:40:02
Qualifying looks to be changing again, only this time just slightly. Soon after in 2006 when F1 qualifying was split into 3 15 minute sections, concerns were raised when the final 10 teams in the final 15 minute pole shootout phase began spending a lot of time driving around burning off fuel in effort to make the car as light as possible. The main concern was ‘image’ in that environmentally, this was just not good and completely unnecessary. bbxxy42-1822a470d2-55 Now, the Spanish Press are reporting that the FIA are about to tweak qualifying in that the final 15 minute qualifying phase would be shortened by 5 minutes and that 5 minutes added onto the first qualifying phase, effectively making it now 20 minutes. The object is to remove ‘fuel burning’ time from the final phase and force teams to get on with posting fast times. This will be a little more environmentally correct and add the challenge and excitement it was designed for. In turn, with the stolen

F1-ToGo Visitors Choose Indy
2007-12-20 14:23:31
Do you want F1 to return to Indy? I’ve had the poll up for a while now and it’s time to take it down. You want F1 back at Indy, at least that’s what the poll says, but it was fairly close. There is a lot to say about this, from Tony George (cough cough), MotoGP taking over any real time slot, the Michelin tire debacle in 2005, money, etc. Whatever your opinion, F1 at or not at Indy will be a sore spot for a lot of us. bbxxy42-1822a470d2-55 I’m in North America, Canada to be exact and would love more F1 races on my side of the pond. It’s pretty expensive for me to travel abroad for a race, but do I want F1 at Indy? No, I don’t. Indianapolis Motor Speedway is Nascar and that’s about turning left. I’m not a Tony George fan either, but I won’t go into that. The results are below. Was this what you expected? I’m interested to hear what your feelings are on this. Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please v
