He wanted to come back and teach and coach next year, but it wasn't meant to happen. I met him a couple of years ago when I went to his summer basketball camps. He was a really nice guy who would give me tips on the court and on my blog. He was a great friend and mentor to me, and he will be greatly missed.

The Jazz needed to stay at most 5 points down to come and steal the game in the last quarter. I don't like the effort from the Jazz, and I expect more from them now on. The Jazz have to keep the Spurs in a half court offensive set because they have been playing great when they pick up the pace in the second quarter.Jerry Sloan needs to call out his team to get the desire to win back in them. The crowd at Energy Solutions Arena for game 3 has to be extremely rowdy to get them going also.Tony Parker had 14 points and 17 assists. If he continues to get in the lane as easily as he has in the first two games, it's over for the Jazz. Tim Duncan got 26 points and 14 boards. Duncan was fantastic. The Jazz need to play more zone to stop Parker and Duncan on the inside.

BurlesonPISTONS BEAT CAVS!The Detroit Pistons beat the Cavs in game 1 79-76 to take a 1-0 series lead. This was an ugly game in what will be an ugly series. Someone should run the ball more and catch the other off guard in game 2. The Cavs have to win game 2 in order to have a real chance in the series. The game was close near the end and the Cavs called a great play to attempt a steal of the game. LeBron penetrated to the paint and Rasheed Wallace came to help and LeBron pass it out for Donyell Marshall to shoot a three. Clank! off the rim and the Pistons went onto win from there.Tayshaun Prince did it all with 8 points, 9 assists and 6 boards. Prince did something that doesn't show up on the stat sheet but is vital to success- the intangibles. Great defense on LJ was a focus for Detroit and Prince did the usual and took on the Cavs superstar. Richard Hamilton had 24 points and 7 assists. Hamilton was the one bright spot in this offensive nightmare. LeBron James had o

the basketball world by saying he wants to be traded from the Lakers to Stephen A. Smith on ESPN radio show 1050. "I would like to be traded, yeah," said Bryant. "Tough as it is to come to that conclusion there's no other alternative, you know?" He also stated there was nothing the Lakers could do to make him stay in LA.This is a new era for the Lakers. The dynasty is over. It's time to get Phil Jackson out, and build on young talent. I am deeply saddened to hear it myself. A great player like Kobe deserves to be in a championship atmosphere, but you hate to hear the stress come out in a trade demand. I like Kobe going to the Bulls or the Knicks because that's where he's liked before. If he heads East I think the East will be a much stronger conference than the West. Read more:Kobe Bryant

The Spurs playe... 2007-05-29 09:10:00 SPURS BEAT JAZZ! LEAD SERIES 3-1!The Spurs played a great 4th quarter and beat the Jazz 91-79. The Jazz needed more offensive weapons, and to stop unnecessary double teams which lead to open threes. The Jazz got frustrated and DFish got tossed along with Jerry Sloan. The veteran official crew was a little too quick on the whistle when it came to technicals and contact. That being said, I would expect Fisher and the Jazz Head Coach to contain themselves from that in the future. The Jazz need to force the tempo more to not play the way the Spurs play. The obvious difference maker in this game was free throws. 41 attempts for the Spurs and 20 for the Jazz. The Jazz have to make the Spurs shoot less, or shoot more themselves to even up the score. Mehmet Okur and Andrei Kirilenko combine for only 16 little points for the entire game. We know they have been playing great defense which is terrific. BUT the Jazz need some offense out of them. Deron Williams can't be expected to pull a LeBron e

had the game of his life and brought the Cavs to victory over the Pistons 109-107 in double overtime. All I can say about LeBron's game last night is WOW! LeBron scored his team's final 25 and 29 of its final 30. He had all the overtime points for the Cavs to go along with that. He did things he's never even done before on the court. Behind the back fade away, went to the right a little more than usual, it was beautiful to see.I expected more from the Pistons on defense. Everyone knew the ball was going to go to LeBron near the end of the game. They should have loaded up on him more. Chauncey Billups had a chance to tie in the second overtime and came up short because Varejao changed the rotation of the shoot.I think the Cavs have too much confidence not to win game six. They have LeBron so if they can't score he can put up 25 straight.

FINALS!The Spurs played well and blowout the Jazz 109-84 to win the Western Conference finals and advance to the NBA finals. The Jazz had to come out with more intensity to win the game. Deron Williams had a bad foot and I thought he lost the bounce in his step that he had before. The Spurs big three had huge games to combine for 54 points, 17 rebounds and 9 assists. If you don't know the big three for the Spurs they are Manu Ginobili, Tony Parker and Tim Duncan. The Spurs have to wait until Thursday to play against the Cavs or the Pistons in the NBA finals. SPURS WIN AGAIN!The Spurs beat the Cavs 103-92 to take a 2-0 series lead. The Spurs came out strong and LeBron got two fouls early to help them out. Tony Parker was fantastic and the Cavs need to find a way to stop him. Eric Snow was the only one who might be able to slow him down; look for him to play more minutes in game 3.The good news for the Cavs is that they had a good come back in the 4th quarter to carry over to game 3. They cut the lead to eight at one point on a 30-14 run. I don't know if this is good for the Spurs or the Cavs. Gregg Popovich is going to tell the Spurs everything they need to do better before he gives any praise for good play.Cleveland has to stop Tony Parker to win a game. Tony gets everyone going it seems and stopping him would give the Cavs less of a running team. Parker gets the Spurs to run. The big three have been hitting the Cavs for lots of points every game; how about making the role players score more? If Robert Horry had

FINALS TONIGHT!Tonight the Cavs and Spurs battle again for the NBA's top honors the championship. Game 2 will air on ABC tonight at 9:00 pm Eastern.WATCH THE GAME! I saw the unfortunate ratings news and it made me sad. Cleveland has to send a message early that they are playing good offense in the early going. The start is the most important aspect of the game for Cleveland. Win or lose if they go away from the game feeling good I would expect them to win game 3.My prediction for this game is 50-50 right now. LeBron sounds mentally prepared but the Cavs are young. The Spurs have got the confidence and the experience to go along with a solid game. The safe pick is the Spurs. Like picking stocks, the Cavs are a risk or a speculative pick. I am going safe with the Spurs.

D. GarrabrantSPURS BEAT CAVS!The Spurs came out prepared in game 1 of the NBA finals and won the game 85-76. The Spurs came out really strong and the Cavs lost some confidence early. LeBron needed a lot more offensive action to give them a chance to win.I would like to see Cleveland go after the Spurs top three players, making the other guys score. The Spurs big three combined for 67 points- that's all you need to hear to have an open jaw. More finals coverage later on today.
I'M BACK AND READY TO COVER MORE BASKETBALL NEWS! ... 2007-06-25 10:28:00 I'M BACK AND READY TO COVER MORE BASKETBALL NEWS! Now that I have returned from around Kona, Hawaii I will be covering all NBA off season developments. We all know the Spurs won the NBA finals in a sweep (just updating all of you who have been in a hole for a few weeks.) One cool thing that you might not have seen is an amazing drawing of LJ23 on an Etch A Sketch! The video will be posted on the left side of my blog by the time you read this. Check it out because it combines not just one art but two: basketball and drawing real life things on an Etch A Sketch. Kobe and KG seem to be on the move, but I would like to see more things develop in that story before I think it's real. KG and Mamba (KB24) are assumingly stressed. They have all the talent in the world but this is not tennis so they can't do it all by themselves. Stay with Basketball Notes by Alex for more draft coverage and about important news happening in the NBA.

about this draft were the sleepers from the second round. I like some of the international guys who might stay overseas a little longer. Also, the Blazers did well for themselves all around. Now let's look at the trades. No KG deal here sorry. The Knicks traded Channing Frye and Steve Francis to the Blazers for Dan Dickau, Fred Jones and Zach Randolph. What a great deal for New York if Zach holds up off the court. I think the Blazers had to unload on a bad story in Randolph but they still got something good in the deal. I would like to see a buyout of Steve Francis so they can have a locker room atmosphere. The Bobcats traded young Brandan Wright to the Golden State Warriors for veteran Jason Richardson and the draft right to Jermareo Davidson. I hate this deal for the Bobcats. They need young on the rise talent instead of already proven gone in a few years talent. Ray Allen and the draft rights to Glen Davis were dealt to Boston for Delonte West, Wally

That's one thing I want to say about the Jason Richardson deal. A young expansion team takes more time to develop unless a huge franchise changing player is available. In the morning I will talk more on the NBA draft.
MY DRAFT PREDICTIONS!
Everyone is talking Oden ... 2007-06-27 15:12:00 MY DRAFT PREDICTIONS!Everyone is talking Oden and Durant and I want to bring a new topic to the mix. Why just who's number 1 or who's number 2? How about not putting pressure on these young soon to be superstars. I think everyone should talk about the others, the Conley Jr.'s and players that do the dirty work more than the mainstream stars. But now that you heard my opinion on that I will put in a quick note about the draft. Number one should be Kevin Durant but it's Oden. Durant is a better individual player but Greg is more proven. I think he wouldn't get rattled as easily as Durant and make other players better before Durant really realizes how vital team work is. Also, ESPN has reported that Oden has been told he will be the number one pick. Now those fresh out of the oven trade rumors. I like Kevin Garnett going somewhere during the draft or very soon after. The talks of the three team deal with the Suns and Hawks sounds like a great deal all around. More on any developments i

Rashar... 2007-07-03 09:55:00 RASHARD LEWIS AGREES TO SIGN WITH ORLANDO!Rashard Lewis upset Sonics fans by taking an offer from the Magic for 5 years and $75 million. Lewis wants to win. You can tell because he left the rebuilding Sonics for a team that looks better right now. I love this move for the player and the team. The Magic can never be too careful, so they should get Lewis to sign as soon as they can on July 11th. The Magic will make a big move forward with this and I think a ten game improvement would be an understatement. Dwight Howard must sense that the Magic are making all the right moves at the right times.

This deal is important for the Sonics because they got an experienced player. He will be a nice scrappy player for the Sonics front line. His ability to stretch the floor with his outside jumper will be nice for pick and pops, and kick outs.

!The Boston
Celtics and the Minnesota Timberwolves have agreed to a trade in principle to bring Kevin Garnett to New England- to play for the Celtics. Danny Ainge is criticized a lot, but now everyone will have to cut him some slack for bringing Ray Allen, KG and Paul Pierce together. The one thing missing from this lineup is a true point guard. I think they are fantastic at every other position, but the point guard slot needs to be filled by a guard who is a great facilitator. The Timberwolves have a good start to rebuilding their roster through this trade. They have some nice young talent, but won't be a playoff team for a while. Randy Foye has to come in and be a leader as this team now needs a new identity and style of play.

Celtics sent Gerald
Green, Al Jefferson, Sebastian Telfair, Ryan Gomes, Theo Ratliff and two first round draft picks to the Timberwolves for Kevin Garnett. The Celtics are now an East favorite with a big three consisting of Ray Allen, Paul Pierce and KG. The next moves for the Celtics need to come from free agency. Their main focus should be a point guard. They have to be careful spending money as the luxury tax is in their future. I would like to give a thumbs up to the recent moves from the Celtics front office.GO CELTICS!

The Washington Wizards s... 2007-08-19 06:48:00 WIZARDS RE-SIGN BLATCHE!The Washington
Wizards signed Andray Blatche to a five year $15 million dollar deal. I think he was overpaid. He is likely to be a distraction in the locker room which will keep the Wizards minds in another area besides playing ball. I would have liked to see a two year $6 million dollar deal out of this because you want to see if Blatche can clean up his act and improve on the court. I call that more of a test drive to see how mature the 20 year old Blatche is.Although I don't approve of the deal, I hope Andray sees the light now and will improve his life off the court. If he does that, then we can rethink that re-signing him is a positive.
2007-08-25 18:36:00 TEAM USA DISMANTLES CANADA!The USA team playing in the FIBA Americas tournament has been beating teams like it was just a preseason game or an expedition. They kept the trend alive by blowing out Canada 113-63. The 50 point win was led be Melo who had 25 points and 4 rebounds. He is putting his imprint on all these games and it's important for his confidence to keep it up. Kobe Bryant was great as always with 15 points and 2 rebounds. Because Melo, LeBron and Kobe on played an average of 19 minutes they didn't have big 30+ point games. One thing that really surprised me was how much Kobe improved his physique. I have put on two pictures of him as a sort of before and after. I expect team USA to go undefeated in the tournament and then concur Beijing in 08 for the gold!
2007-08-23 16:14:00 JUAN HOWARD TRADE RUMORS!There has been a lot of talk recently about the Timberwolves accommodating Juan Howard's trade request. Now that Minnesota lost KG a.k.a. Kevin Garrnett, it's imperative for Howard to get to a team that can win before he retires.I know a place where he would fit-Boston. I know now that the veteran list is climbing and this would only be a great team for a few years, but Danny Ainge (Executive Director of Basketball Operations) has to win now or he won't be in Boston much longer. The Celtics should not give any young talent away if they become a player in the Howard sweepstakes. Maybe a newly signed free agent would make the cut.Boston has to be careful about this deal because Howard definitely has an injury probability. Last season he got hurt and I wouldn't rule out that he won't miss at least 10 games this season due to injury. I urge Boston to take a look at this deal but don't give away too much and consider the age and mileage on Howard before they p
2007-09-10 14:43:00 NUGGETS AND SIXERS ANNOUNCE TRADE!The Nuggets have acquired Steven Hunter and Bobby Jones in exchange for Reggie Evans and the draft rights to Ricky Sanchez. This is an okay deal. I don't love the idea of trading Hunter, but I'd like to get Evans if I am the Sixers. Evans is a good veteran for the team, although I don't think he'll want to end his career with a bad team. Both teams will make it work and I think both teams got a pretty fair deal.
2007-09-06 13:38:00 ELTON BRAND INVOLVED IN NEW ABA TEAM IN WESTCHESTER!Clippers star Elton Brand is financing an expansion team in the American Basketball Association (ABA). I love the investment he is making to bring basketball all across the country. The team has been named the Westcheaster Phantoms.Elton's mom Daisy Brand is also a part of the team as the team owner. Artie McGriff- the other owner of the team had this to say:"Really, it's me running things and her telling me what to do," McGriff said with a laugh. "She thought it would be a good idea to own a basketball team and help some guys get to the next level. Elton put up the money, but we've still got to make it a business."I urge everyone in the Westchester area to come and support this and any other ABA team! Without the minors, American basketball wouldn't be spoken as highly of throughout the world.
2007-09-30 10:53:00 CAVS AND HORNETS MAKE DEAL!The Cavs got younger by adding Cedric Simmons from the Hornets and gave veteran David Wesley up for it. Wesley will be released by the Hornets once the deal is completed. I love the deal for the Hornets more than the Cavs in the interim. This is a showing of terrific cap and team maintenance for the Hornets. I would view the cap and roster space as a security in case another injury prone season derails the Hornets again. It is also good for trading situations. In terms of the Cavs, I think it may or may not benefit their bench. It gives them another young body to throw around so it should help.
2007-10-10 16:18:00 Photo by: Stefano SilvestriCELTICS BEAT TIMBERWOLVES!The new look Boston Celtics beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 92-81 in London, England for the Europe Live tour. I wasn't really impressed with this game. In fact I didn't expect to be. These teams need to get used to drastic roster changes and need to get to know each other more-and that is what the preseason is all about. I thought the Celtics only played hard in the 3rd quarter because the game was pretty close up until then. The Timberwolves had some good plays here and there, but overall their offense was disfunctional.Ray Allen put his stamp on this game with 28 points and making 11 of 14 shots from the field. He didn't do that great in the first preseason game, but he is still getting his feet wet with the C's. I really didn't like that they started Rajon Rondo at point guard. I know it's preseason but Rondo? He still needs to find his game (I am not insulting his game, I just think maybe he could spend time in the D-Leagu
2007-10-10 15:39:00 KNICKS RE-SIGN ALLAN HOUSTON!The New York Knicks decided to take some risk and sign Allan Houston."I have decided to return to the NBA as a member of the New York Knicks. I have worked extremely hard in the last year and a half to accomplish my dream of playing in the NBA again," Houston said.I want to see Allan Houston play before I say I like or don't like this deal. All I can really say right now, is that I am happy he is healthy and ready to play in the NBA game again.GOOD LUCK ALLAN!

2007-10-09 15:34:00 Photo by: Giulio CiamilloGRIZZLIES FIRST TO BE EMBARRASSED AT EUROPE LIVE!Unicaja Malaga beat the Memphis Grizzlies in a nail biter of a game 102-99. Unicaja made a lot of mistakes, but were able to win on last second free throws and good defense. I thought this game was easily the most entertaining of all of the Europe Live games so far. Both teams wanted to run quickly up and down the court and shoot lots of threes.A player that I didn't know by the last name of Kus led the way for Unicaja Malaga with 20 points and shot three of seven from the three point line. I thought most of the players could stretch the defense for Unicaja Malaga, but he was on fire. I also thought that it was interesting how not just the starters did the scoring for Unicaja. The five starters had 52 points, while the bench had 50.The newcomer Juan-Carlos Navarro led the Grizzlies with 21 points and shot five of eight from the three point line. He wasn't very consistent, but definitely was effective. I li
