Helping The Mountain Gorillas

After the July 2007 killings of endangered mountain gorillas, possibly by people involved in the illegal charcoal trade, a mobile antipoaching force stayed close to gorillas in Virunga National Park. But the Democratic Republic of the Congo's parks authority, ICCN, must keep the animals safe when these guards are needed elsewhere. Nairobi-based WildlifeDirect—founded by anthropologist Richard Leakey—helps outfit rangers and supplement their government salaries. The group's website hosts blogs where rangers and others post news and pictures from the field.

[ The Uptime Studio seeks to empower conservation photographers by creating an organizational structure that allows them to focus on the creative aspects of their work while at the same time finding venues that allow their images to make a significant contribution to the understanding and caring of the environment. ]
Membership
The success of the Uptime Studio depends upon its members. Therefore, membership is only open to those who have proven a commitment to conservation action, superior photographic skills, and the highest ethical standards, or in the case of Associates, the potential for achieving all three . Members actively work within the Uptime Studio to promote it, further the agenda for various conservation issues, and collaborate with other photographers and organizations dedicated to conservation.
