ABSA Curry Cup
2007-06-25 15:10:00
Well we are underway with the ABSA Curry Cup.There were some fascinating opening matches and it all bodes well for an exciting season.Dan Nicholl has done his bit on two screens for us. Firstly he has done all the anchor work and made some mad dashes around the place recording South Africa's rugby elite, and secondly he has given us a great punt on his blog feverpitcher. He was hilarious on Super Saturday but that was merely because he is about to make a serious load of somethings with his Hazard golf pants.

New Seasons - New Chances
2007-06-13 14:26:00
Well we have had a rather busy time behind the scenes in the last month or so. We have had a fantastic first summer bringing you cricket and now we move into winter and can proudly tell you that we have the privilege of bringing you the ABSA Curry Cup.ABSA are really looking forward to launching a South African (and possibly world) first in bringing rugby to mobile phones. In the mix is none other than iafrica's Dan Nicholl, who is as excited as a pixie/revved up as a goblin to be the anchor of our new series. You can get loads more of Dan on his marvelous blog called Feverpitcher. Please enjoy the series and do let us know what you think about rugby, the product and even Dan.

Its that boy Johnson again. This time it is in iafrica.com and an interview he did over there.

Cricinfo again! This time with Gary Crocker
2007-02-28 02:28:00
Cricinfo have an interview with former Zimbabwean all rounder Gary Crocker .I had the fun of meeting up with Gary in LA last year. He is having a lot of fun playing cricket in Hollywood with a whole lot of folks originally from the Carribean. The standard is high and there seems to be a rapidly growing league. Gary says he has his work cut out as an ex Test player but one area he wins hands down is in the post match 'refreshment' stakes!

Cricinfo gives Neil Johnson a mighty punt
2007-02-27 05:17:00
Well who would have guessed it? Our Neil being reviewed ahead of the World Cup!Yes that was a special Zimbabwean team and they managed some remarkable results against the likes of India and South Africa. There was also that marvelous hundred at Lords from one Neil Clarkson Johnson , that nearly added Australia to the list above.

Dazed and Confused
2007-02-19 11:39:00
Reports are coming in from all over the country of an increase in car accidents since Saturday. Police spokesmen have told the press that there have been a high incidence of drivers going off the road, driving through stop streets and red lights and crashing into stationary objects. In all incidents it seems as if the drivers were in a state of shock, eyes wide open and staring into space.Doctors have also reported an unusually high incidence of men checking into hospitals and seeking therapy. In all cases patients complained of a sense of unreality, a deepening sense of confusion and disorientation.Police, Emergency and Medical staff countrywide have been placed on alert until the situation has been brought under control. When pressed for answers, the President could only speculate "We bel

The Commentators 'gobbey'
2007-02-14 04:43:00
Well our one armed cricket comentator Neil Johnson (AKA Bandit), is up in Jozi to call the final game of an extremely unusual one day series between South Africa and Pakistan. So you will have to make do with this post from me.I will leave the finer details of the series to the real journos, suffice to say that it amazing how good Pakistan really are when they are 'on'. Watching the series has been like one of those terrible matchplay golf games, that one has, when not may holes are halved! There is an interesting article in the Carribean paper Nation News about remuneration for the West Indies team at the World Cup. I do hope they sort things out before the Tournament begins. Reminds me of a West Indies tour to SA a rather long while back.I found the article above after reading the West In

African Cricket - where to?
2007-02-07 02:14:00
There is a somewhat funny, yet rather sad post over at Feverpitcher about cricket in Zimbabwe.Dan is a good friend of Howzit Cricket and so we recommend the trip over there.

Hang in there Herschelle. - A post from Neil Johnson
2007-01-26 08:03:00
In the early 90s, playing for Natal, we had a very young side, we werean exciting team. Shaun Pollock, Lance Klusener, Jonty Rhodes, ErollStewart, Andrew Hudson and Derek Crookes - there was plenty of talentaround. We were led by Malcolm Marshal and senior players like Pat Symcox and Clive Rice. In those days we always had good crowds to come and watch as we played this exciting brand of cricket. We were taught many lessons about the way cricket should be played, and one lesson that stands out today is the lesson Clive Rice gave us on the crowd. The lesson from Clive came about after a hot couple of days offielding in East London against Border. Mark Bruyns, our wicket keeper, had put down a catch early on the first day, a tough chance. There was a guy in the crowd who did not let Mark forg

Cool Friend
2007-01-17 02:58:00
Jon Gericke, the well known sports presenter is this weeks cool friend! He gave Howzit Cricket a punt on his blog BBJ Sport Guy in mid December and I have been meaning to write about it. Now Jon! I think that the Howzit clip is not necessarily for those who have NOTHING to do at the cricket. It is a fun look at the personalities involved in this great game and so has lots to offer lovers of cricket.Jon has a great post about the Zim fuel crisis and the lack of mowing at Chapman Golf Club, where Laurette Maritz has been preparing for the World Cup. Let me tell you that the rough at Chapman is brutal and so it may be well for the South African team in their preparations for the World Cup but it makes the life of a mortal golfer 'rougher'.As Hugh says - ROCK ON !

Did they have marshmallows at the bonfire?
2007-01-17 01:18:00
I spent Christmas in Zimbabwe. My birth-place and happy home for over 30 years. I was lucky enough to play a great deal of cricket here and give something back as an administrator and fund-raiser. Cricket was fun – great good fun for players and spectators alike. A lot of effort was made by the top players, and this showed in the way that they seemed able to punch above their weight in international cricketing circles. I am positive that the fun and passion they had for the game helped compliment the hard work they put in. I won’t even mention the financial side of it and the creative employment that cricket lovers and entrepreneurs provided to keep great players playing at home. Effort, passion and pride all round. And what of it all now? Corruption, threats and intimidation, arson and

Johnno's spin disaster
2006-12-28 06:16:00
News from the Natal Midlands is that our intrepid blogger has had a terrible misfortune. while Eyewitness accounts are sketchy to say the least, it seems as though Johnno was out taking a ride on his mountain bike, spinning gently through the rolling hills near Nottingham Road, when tragedy struck. It appears that Johhno attempted to copy Paul Adams bowling action while bowling along on his bike. It must have been a wrong 'un, a no ball of sorts, and the end result is that our man has a broken arm(in two places) and a thin layer of his back spread evenly on some country road. How wrong that Johnno should take a fall when there are so many others deserving of such a fate!!We wish you a speedy recovery.

What a Difference
2006-12-20 05:39:00
How can the 2 teams be so different? The South African test and one day side. With only a couple of changes the teams look and work very differently. From the well-drilled, organised one-day team to the Barbarians- like, unstructured test side. The roles of the individuals in the one-day side appears to be well-defined, each player understands his role and enjoys each others success. The teams success is the most important agenda, and one can see this in the teams results. The test side has not gelled at all. A test match is the greatest test of cricketing ability, therefore the side is made up of the best cricketing individuals. Often individual agendas get in the way of team focus. The best side in the world, Australia, comprises individuals looking for the best results for the team. They

No spinners. Is this telling us that South Africa just dont have a spinner that can do a job or that the selectors know that the Indians have not played the quick bouncing ball very well, so why play a spinner. For many years South Africa have had the same attitude towards their bowling attack, they believe in quick bowlers and therefor the spinners in this country just dont develope. Conditions suit the quicks and therefor the spinners are only used when the quicks cant get the wickets. The life of a spinner in South Africa is a tough one.Spinners are a part of this great game, to have a team without a spinner does not have the balance that this game was intended to have. Spinners provide the variation that a captain requires at his disposal to get wickets. Without a spinner the attack bec

Nicky's Decision
2006-12-12 11:40:00
Well do you blame him. His confidence must be shattered. The only thing constant in his life is his family and his team, the Eagles. Why would you want to go through what he has gone through in the last 12 months. He has been in the South African set up for more than ten years. Was his role ever defined in the team and has he always been compared to the great spinners, like Warne or Murali. Nicky Boje has retired from international cricket, and would be the first to admit that he is no Warne or Murali, he had a different role to play.South Africa has always believed in seam bowlers (well as far back as I can remember) and spinners are bowled just before the break, to plug up one end while the seamers rest or to get to the second new ball. The records of spin bowlers at international level

I Can See Clearly Now
2006-12-11 03:27:00
I'm trying to get my head around Zimbabwe's blind commentator, Dean Du Plessis. No disrespect to Dean, I think he's amazing, but a blind TV commentator (click the link for the story) is something of an oxymoron isn't it? But then I figured it makes sense in a way - especially in Zim, where the cricket authorities are clearly blind to the fact that they have ruined the game with their actions. Then I read Matthew Hoggards explanation of his success " - "I just close my eyes and wang it down." (that could explain away a lot of things!) and I realise that maybe I haven't been seeing something. (If I haven't seen it then I'm also blind!?) Sight, obviously has nothing to do with cricket. If you can't see that, then you're obviously a cricketer!Anyway - Dean Du Plessis says that he can tell whe

I am presuming this is Mr Neil Johnson from Zimbabwe who owes his followers an explanation for finishing to play much too early in his life. Was he always plan to finish his career 'on his terms' like Damien Martyn did today? Johnson was too skillful and talented to walk away from the game when his fans were still to enjoyment every day. What work is Johnson doing this day? Or did he collect his monies from cricket and invest them wisely so that he can live the life of a president now?

I admit

I freely admit that Jonno can drive faster than me!

The team hard at work
2006-12-08 00:05:00
The cricket 'trust'!From my right, we have Neil Clarkson Johnson. The man the blog takes a name from. Poor boy thought that this was a serious photo shoot so he brought along his chiselled jawbone. In the centre is arguably the most universally respected cricket journo. Neil Manthorp has been in media for 20 years. Started when he was 12!Pommie Mbangwa is Bulawayo's favourite son, easily nudging the man of Kenyan and cricketing lineage called Henry! You can tell he went to Milton as he is the only one in the picture drinking water! OR - is he the sharpest of the lot and realising that he has to represent cricket, concealed the Pimms? These 3 are hugely influential cricket media folks and we are stoked to have them involved. Pom is already one of the most exciting cricket show anchors. Eloque

Fletch is Papa Bear
2006-12-05 03:46:00
What a bad day for the barmy army! Duncan Fletch er must be feeling grumpier than Papa Bear on discovering his porridge had been eaten. Englands batting resolve showed the consistancy of porridge - but perhaps more reminiscent of something browner in colour. Well, for all ABSA supporters out there (Anyone But Swining Australia!) it is a bad day, the Ashes look all but over bar the sledging. We need something to look forward to.Ladies and gentlemen, cricketers and fools, pie chuckers, hackers and umpires too...I give you...coming soon, very soon...the man from MvurwiHowick's favorite son,the one the only.Blogger Johnno!!
