London Calling
2006-11-30 19:04:00
The London Calling festival took place at the Paradiso in Amsterdam last week and as with last year the line up was quite awsome, showcasing some of the best bands Britain has to offer. The line up was:- Friday 24th- The Holloways, Little Man Tate, Boy Kill Boy, The Young Knives, Klaxtons, Fortune drive, Five O Clock Heroes, Metronomy and Bees Sound Collection. Saturday 25th was just as good with sets from:- 747s, Jamie T, The Pigeon Detectives, Guillimots, The Maccabees, Bromheads Jacket, 1990s, The Automatic, Mumm-Ra, Lotus Lullaby and Oxford Glamour Models. Fortunately VPRO broadcast many of the sets in fantastic quality so you can lay back close your eyes and picture what you missed. Can't wait for next year, enjoy. Right then, for those of you wondering where the podcasts have gone....do not fear they will hopefully return next month. I'm in the process of putting together a new studio and as usual things are going far from to plan. In the meantime I'm to put together a Burning World playlist on a roughly weekly basis. As you can probably tell from the track listing below it contains some pretty hot stuff from some of the best new and forthcoming releases I've heard this week. I've zipped the file as individual tracks. If you would prefer one long file then let me know but I think this is the best way to do it. Don't forget, if you hear something you like then please go out and make the purchase.Enjoy. Burning World - Playlist 1 1. South Central - Nothing Can Go Wrong (Art Goes Pop)2. I knew it would be worth the trip. It's just a shame that a few more people didn't. I'm talking about the brilliant Maps gig which I was fortunate enough to witness at Fibbers in York last Friday. I always find it quite embarassing when a band has to play in front of an extremely dissapointing crowd. It's safe to say however that the sparce audience did not reflect the sounds produced on stage. Maps were simply sublime. Fed on a diet of bands like My Bloody Valentine, Spiritulized etc. Maps mainman James certainly knows how to create a sound capable of removing paint from the walls. The band release their new single "Don't Fear" through Last Space Recordings on 30th October and have a few gigs coming up. Get off your ass and get to the gig. You won't be dissapointed. Herman Dune - Giant
2006-10-23 09:27:00
2006 has thus far been of quite a vintage as far as music is concerned. Things just seem to be getting better and better, rarely does a week pass without a record which changes my life in some way. Usually it's a record by some exiting new band which takes me completely by suprise but now and again an old favorite returns and delivers the goods. That was the case this week when some kind soul sent me a copy of the new Herman Dune album. My fingers tingled with exitement as I inserted the magical silver disc into the CD player. Often you can expect too much from a band which have previously brightened the darker corners of your life but whatever you want from this record is what you will receive. I can't big it up enough, just put your hand in your pocket and you'll wonder how you ever survived without one. That's another thing actually, the release schedule for Giant is a bit strange to sat the least. It's out now if your in France. If you live in continental Europe you'll hav

Xerox Teens
2006-10-17 11:31:00
London anarcho-punks Xerox Teens are hitting the road in November and you would be well advised to try and catch up with them. I wouldn't get too close though because you never know if they might be carrying some kind of lethal object. I mean with names like Danny Fancy, Dirt Dog Cash, Pinstripe, Uber and Nuvo you have to start asking questions. Seriously though Xerox Teens are one of the most exiting bands around. Their blatant disregard for anything which has gone before is admirable. They really couldn't give a shit and that's why you simply have to make an effort to experience the madness. One Second Bridge
2006-10-17 10:59:00
If it's pure lovelyness your after then you can't go far wrong with One Second Bridge. It's basically a collaboration between Vicente García Landa, originally from Mexico City and Matias Bieniaszewski, originally from Buenos Aires. They met apparently through a record shop owning older brother and boy am I glad they did. One Second Bridge glide along effortlessly taking in beautiful gliding guitars, minimal electronics and some bloody good songs. I know some people are going to call them shoegazers but I'll tell you now there's a lot more to them than that. Let them into your life. The Nightingales - Out Of True
2006-10-16 16:26:00
I've never been keen on bands re-forming and making comebacks. It usually results in a damp squib of a gig, a sub standard record and a previously legendary reputation in reduced to tatters.Imagine then my dismay at finding a new album by the legendary Nightingales landing on my doorstep. The Nightingales released their first single "Idiot Strength" back in 1981 and followed it in 1982 with their debut album "Pigs On Purpose" through Cherry Red Records. Although I was too young to enjoy it at the time (eight years old) I did get a copy a few years later around the time of their "What A Carry On" single in 1985. So what you may ask are The Nightblooms doing releasing a new album in 2006. Despite my initial reservations it seems that this is one comeback worth making. The band do not seem to have even begum to mellow with age. In fact this record sounds as if it could almost be a debut album such is the freshness and the attitude. I really hope that people take this release on face v

The Dykeenies
2006-10-16 09:35:00
....and it's another direct hit for Glasgow. There must be something in the air up there, something which makes it almost impossible for anyone who forms a band to be crap. I'm only jealous of course, I mean... what has York done for the music world of late? Anyway the band I'm talking about are a bunch of Glaswegians called The Dykeenies. Having the honour of being the first band to sign to the King Tut's record label they have presented the world with one hell of a debut single. If you can find a copy of "New Ideas/Will It Happen Tonight" snap it up because you'll only end up kicking yourself later that you missed out on such a juicy slice of vinyl. The Dykeenies - Will It Happen Tonight The band have also been noticed by the NME (I'm not sure if that's actually a good thing) and are participating on the NME Rock & Roll Riot Tour which calls at:- October 17th - Sheffield, LeadmillOctober 18th - Bournmouth, UniversityOctober 20th - Nottingham, Trent UniversityOctober 2

This was the first record from Liverpool's Boo Radleys. The reason for this post is that people keep asking me on almost a weekly basis if I have a copy of Ichabod & I and I dont think it will do much harm to post the whole thing now since there were only ever 500 copies pressed and as far as I know it has never been re-issued. It's a shame really because this is a brilliant record.Enjoy.The Boo Radleys - Ichbod & I1. Elenor Everything2. Bodenheim Jr3. Catweazle4. Sweet Salad Birth5. Hip Clown Rag6. Walking 5th Carnival7. Fury Of The Headteachers
2006-09-26 17:55:00
It must be great to live in Sheffield these days at the hub of a seemingly endless production line of new interesting bands. I'm not talking about the ones which appeal to the mass media and make stacks of dosh, I'm talking about the plethora of exellent unsigned talent which circles around this great northern city. One of the best bands I've heard for some time celebrate under the rather brilliant moniker Fury Of The Headteachers. They have a sound which I'm sure Sonic youth would kill for. Loud pounding basslines, distorted guitars and a singer who wouldn't look out place in a Happy Flowers gig all make for one of the best and most individual sounds around. This lot are most certainly not bandwagon jumpers and I suspest that if you even suggested that to them you may have something larfe inserted in a place you would rather not.Fury Of The Headteachers released their debut single "Fables" through Grace Records earlier this year and although it was limited to just 300 copies a

The Boyfriends
2006-09-26 13:57:00
The Boyfriends are a four piece from London. Their debut single "I Love You" was released back in February and I'm asahmed to admit that I missed it at the time, an error for which I punish myself by beating my thumb with a large hammer on a daily basis. Their second single "Adult Acne" however did not slip though the net and was played on Burning World #7. I don't think it will be too long before the rest of the civilized world catches onto the simple yet charming tunes The Boyfriends appear to be able to spawn at will. The band have just released their third single "Once Upon A Time" and will present the world with their eponymously titled debut album on 2nd October through Boobytrap records, a couple of tracks from which can be heard below. Soooo, it's been a while, but it's good to be back.I made the mistake of going drinking with Mr Waaah, Man, that motherfucker is crazy! I'm not going to go into detail, but I was left in no doubt that this cat needs a straight jacket!! Great night man. So down to business. Just what has been cluttering up my ears this week?I'll tell you.First off the bat was Jerry Ropero & Denis The Menace, with Coracao.Three decent remixes, with my favourite being the Axwell remix. Big bouncy base baby yeah, reminded me of the mid nineties, released on Subliminal, this EP is pretty sweet.Jerry Ropero & Denis The Menace - Coracao (Axwell Remix)What else was there?.....Ah yes the familiarly titled Power Of Love by Quentin Harris.A soulful bouncy little number, I liked the simplicity of this one. It grows on you. Released nearly two weeks ago on Jellybean Soul, this comes with four mixes including a dub mix.Quentin Harris - Power Of Love (ain't nothin' but a house party mix)Last and yes least!

Yeah I know it's been a while but number 17 is finally here. I think it was worth the wait though with stuff from the brilliant new albums by Larrikin Love and Milburn, two records which should be somewhere near the top of your shopping list. I also decided to throw in an old classic from the band who celebrate under the moniker of Cud. The main reason for that (apart from it being a great tune is that the band will be playing what they say will almost certainly be their last ever gig at The Irish Centre in Leeds on 19th September and I'm quivering with the exitement of it all as we speak.A couple of really good demo's this week as well. Los Campesions come from Cardiff and you can download their demo from www.myspace.com/loscampesinos . The track in thisweeks program "You! Me! Dancing! is in my opinion the pick of the crop with it's wonderful scratchy guitars that David Gedge would probably be quite happy to die for. The other demo is from a band called "In Disgust". Larrikin Love will release their long awaited debut album on 25th September. "The Freedom Spark" will follow the new single "Happy As Annie" which will hit the shops on 11th September. The band are currently on tour in the UK... well actually they're having a few nights off because Micko has gone and knackered his shoulder by falling over whilst paddling in a shallow stream at the Secret Garden festival thus forcing the band to cancel their gigs in Swindon (1st September) and Swindon (2nd September), but they expect him to be fit enought to see out the rest of the tour, see their my space site for details. This is not a bad thing so don't get me wrong. A cool effort with some splendid "baywatchesque" drum sampling, don't even get me started on it. Here you go then, the final selection from me before Christmas. It looks already as though next year is going to be just as good for music as this year has been with new releases scheduled (and in this program) from the likes of Low, Kristin Hersh, Explosions In The Sky, Little Man Tate and Jesu to name but five. I am toying with the idea of putting together a program of all the tunes which have given me the most pleasure this year. I know that it's not exactly an original thing to do but quite frankly...who cares. This isn't a request show but if you have any suggestions for such a program let me know and I'll see what I can do but bear in mind this is all subject to not being too busy between Chrismas and New Year. I think it's fair to say that this is probably the best Burning World program thus far. The fact of the matter is that there is so much good music around at the moment you and you don't have to look very hard to find it. I just wish more people could be bothered because only then will we rid the world of the dirge which makes up ninety percent of the commercial charts. Anyway of particular note this week is the new album by a band from the south west of England wo celebrate under the moniker The Archie Bronson Outfit. Their new album is entitled Derdang Derdang and has just been released by Domino Records. The Fall - 30th Aniversary
1970-01-01 00:59:59
There can be very few bands who can claim to have been active for no less than thirty years and still sound as fresh as the day they were born. In fact the only one I can think of is The Fall. Perhaps it's got something to do with the fact that Mark E. Smith seems to sack band members as one of his favorite pastimes, or perhaps it's more to do with the fact that Smith is a complete one off. Over the last three decades he has stubbornly refused to follow trends or sell out to the powers that be. Over the last couple of years he has even gone as far as walking off stage half way through just because he felt like it and on the last tour cancelling gigs at very late notice. As annoying as Mark E. Smith can be you just have to admire his unshakeable attitude and self belief. This is a recording of the recent 30th anniversary gig which took place at the New Century Hall in Manchester on 10th June. It's apparently the 30th anniversary of the original line up, Mark E. Smith, Una Baines, Mart

3Hostwomexicansandatinofspanners win the award for band name of the week. They've just released their debut album "Pegasus Bridge" through Noisestar records and it is spectacular. The one thing which comes through about this bunch of lads is that really don't give a shit about anything other than having a laugh and making some quite angry noises. At times they remind me of the Happy Flowers who releasedsome pretty good stuff on Homestead Records some years ago. Check out the MP3's on their website HERE.Another release to look out for this week is the new album by Capleton. If you like dancehall reggae then this should be one of your albums of the year. The Rifles - No Love Lost
1970-01-01 00:59:59
This year just keeps getting better and better. It seems like every week there's another fantastic new band with another brilliant debut album. I mean so far this year we have had moments of pure perfection from The Longcut and had our ears burned off by Be Your Own Pet to name but two and long may it continue. This week it's the turn of The Rifles who released their latest single "She's Got Standards" a couple of weeks ago and you can hear it on this weeks Burning World program below. The single comes in lovely pink vinyl and is worth buying just to sit and look at spinning round on your turntable. The Rifles release their debut album on 17th July and it is yet another contender for the top of the end of year lists. Eleven jerky pop/punk anthems each of which leave most of their peers sat in the shade. This'll still be on my ipod at Christmas.www.therifles.co.ukwww.myspace.com/therifles

Thanks to all the bands, labels etc who have sent records and cd's in to Burning World this year and next year we aim to be even bigger and better and in order to achieve this I will be looking for some people to help out with regular reviews etc. If you've got a bit of spare time and you want to see your thoughts on these pages please drop me a line.
