Times New Viking
2008-03-04 10:07:00
This fine gig was recorded at New York's Bowery Ballroom just last week on 25th February. "Rip It Off" is one of my most favoritist records of the year thus far. They were supporting Super Furry Animals on this particular night and sound great. I think the possibility exists that the tracks may not all be in the correct order as they were played on the night due to the fact that I put the files together after consuming rather too much achohol but it doesn't really matter. My Bloody Valentine - Vancouver 1992
2008-03-02 02:47:00
Well it's almost upon us. After fifteen years of apparent inactivity one of the greatest bands ever to grace this planet are about to return....and muggins here hasn't got a ticket. I'm gutted I must admit but the prospect of a new album will hopefully make up for it. The reformation of My Bloody Valentine is not something I ever expected would really happen what with all the promises and false rumours over the years. The band are playing across three towns in the UK, London, Glasgow & Manchester. All the UK dates have now sold out but as soon as I can get a decent quality recording of any of these gigs I'll put it on this site for all to enjoy. This is probably the best sounding My Bloody Valentine bootleg I have. It was recorded back in 1992 on the famous Loveless tour and sounds abs

Who would have thought it. 2008 and old time renegade Nick Cave returns with a bloody good album. I've never being particularly into Nick Cave but I did enjoy some of his records around the turn of the nineties. So when a new Nick Cave album came spinning in my direction I had to spend some time deciding what would be the best use for it. Only some days later did I risk introducing it to a cd player and then only because I'd just cleared up some cat poo and was trying to think what could be worse. Enter "Dig!!! Lazurus Dig!!!" which is the title of both the new album and the single hence. The track itself is great and can be heard in the program below but the album is a bit of a corker and see's Mr Cave in great form. It may well be the last great thing he does but if so then what a way to

Another Sunny Day - London Weekend
2008-02-27 04:13:00
I didn't realise how scarce this record was until I saw it on e-bay a couple of weeks ago changing hands for about fifty four quid. Originally released on the legendary Sarah Records (SARAH 613) in 1993 after a string of classic singles such as "I'm In Love With A Girl Who Doesn't Know I Exist", You Should All Be Murdered" and "What Happened". The band basically consisted of one Harvey Williams who seemed to do just about everything although on this album he did enlist the help of a few others including Bob Wratten and Michael Hiscock from The Field Mice. The long and short of it is that "London Weekend " is a record everyone should own, if only as audio files. I know it's always nice to have an original copy but with so few copies around and then at highly inflated prices this will just ha

Strawberry Whiplash
2008-02-23 03:26:00
Since the year dot there has always been a constant stream of good pop bands from Scotland and in particular Glasgow. Last the playlist below (playlist 48) features the latest two to come to my attention although I'm sure there is probably at least another dozen just waiting to be uncovered. Both Strawberry Whiplash and Bubblegum Lemonade (for it is they) both have new records out on Matinee Records. Perhaps the label has a whole bunch of scouts roaming the streets of Glasgow like secret agents eavesdropping on conversations in bars, phone tapping venues and torturing students until they tell their secrets. Or maybe it's just something in the porridge, leftovers from the legacy of great bands like The Jesus & Mary Chain and The Pastels. Whatever the reason Glasgow continues to churn ou

Here we go then with the 48th installment of ear sizzling goodness. This weeks featured artist is the wonderfull Be Your Own Pet whose second album "Get Awkward" is already poised to be one of the most important releases of the year. Of course we still have the new Fall to come which is now going to be called "Imperial Wax Solvent". I think it's schedueled for March release through Castle so all being well we won't have much longer to wait. Anyway back to this weeks playlist and it's fair to say that there is some pretty awsome stuff on this one. In particular the new tracks by Strawberry Whiplash and Bubblegum Lemonade are worthy of Brits...arf arf...did you watch that shambles on the telly. Disconcerts

Don't you just love bands which it is virtually impossible to get any info on! If you've been downloading the playlists over the last couple of months you'll already be quite familiar with Disconcerts who's "Books, Chairs, Thoughts" E.P. still gives me palpitations every time it hijaks my i-pod. They play a brand of quirky pop punk not unlike The Fire Engines or The Fall (new album coming soon!) and are playing a gig in London with These New Puritans next month which if it didn't happen to be 200 miles away I would certainly be attending. I saw These New Puritans last week and they were very good although a slightly longer set wouldn't have gone amiss. I think they played for about 28 minutes, but it was a very good 28 minutes. The London gig is at The Metro on 20th March and if you can mak

Downliners Sekt
2008-02-20 09:06:00
As far as attitudes towards music go Downliners Sekt are in a class of their own. To say they are non-commercial is an understatement. It's music purely for the love of it and let's share it with everyone. Record label bosses must be scratching their heads in puzzlement of such an novel stance. I really wish more bands would see the benefits of giving music away in order to get it heard by the largest possible audience instead of being all poncy. The band have just released their second album and I must admit if I had to pay ten quid on Amazon for it I would not be dissapointed for it is a work of art. It's called "The Saltire Wave" and the band are actively encouraging people to download it and share it in any way they feel free. If you go to the bands website you can still download the f

This weeks featured artist is Lemuria who come fighting out of Buffalo, New York with one hell of an album. To be honest this is the first record I've heard from the band but I'm certainly going to try and track down some of their previous stuff. Anyway this weeks playlist contains three tracks from the new album and gives a good account of the rest of the record which I hope you will consider buying when it's released on 26th February. Please feel free to leave comments on the site. You all seem to have gone a bit quiet recently. Another week, another brilliant record. It seems at the moment there is at least one record a week that makes the world a much nicer place to be. This week the record in question is the debut album by Columbus, Ohio's Times New Viking. Sixteen tracks of guitar spanking goodness. If I were a doctor I would prescribe you a full dose twice daily for your general well being. I think it's pretty certain that they will be next weeks featured artist. This weeks featured artist however is the superb Eats Tapes who's debut album "Dos Mutantes" I somehow managed to miss last year. A pretty catastrophic event because tons of stuff has been lost including the most recent 134 albums which people have sent in to Burning World in digital format. I feel really bad about this because people and bands have been good enough to send me them and clearly have their lives involved in these things and now in the blink of an eye...all gone. Sarandon - Kill Twee Pop
2008-03-13 03:14:00
Kill Twee Pop? Seems a strange thing to say when your signed to a label responsible for some of the twee'est moment in twee history. Perhaps they're working on it from the inside and soon Slumberland will be a twee free zone. Either way this is a record you won't forget in a hurry not least because it comes on a lovely ten inch slab of blue vinyl which looks ever so pretty (but not twee) rotating on the turntable. Slumberland say this is the bands debut album but I'm almost sure there was an album a couple of years ago. Much like The Fall they seem to change band members on a fairly frequent basis. The album starts as it means to go on with the angst fueled title track "Kill Twee Pop" the geezer shouts in a demented fashion. I have to say it sounds great cranked up as loud as your system w

This was the very first e.p. from The Orb. Released back in 1989 on Wau Mr Modo records it was apparently based on samples from New York City's Kiss FM. While it's not a classic it's definately worth a listen. Later that year the twenty minute monster "A Huge Ever Growing Pulsating Brain That Rules From The Centre Of The Ultraworld" would be released and confirm The Orb as ambient masters. On first listen it's well up to standard and already I prefer it over last years "Reformation" album. This playlist would probably have been online yesterday were it not for the fact that I had to re-jig it to include a track from the new Fall album "Imperial Wax Solvent". There are two tracks on it which I think will be in most people's lists at the end of the year. There's a great little number called "I've Been Duped" which I've been singing to myself for the last twelve hours or so and then there's "50 Year Old Man" which is kind of seperated into three sections and comes in at over ten minutes

Novak - Peel Session 14th April 1999 >>>Request<<<

Novak formed in Birmingham around 1996. Their debut single "Silver Seas" was released as a seven inch through Earworm Records in November 1996 and if I remember correctly the early copies came in some kind of cloth sleeve. Just the kind of marketing that I always fall for. Next came a string of perfectly good singles on the Choosy label before the bands one and only album appeared in April 1999. This session was first broadcast a couple of weeks before the album was released and presents the band at the peak of their powers. You would have thought then that this session would contain four tracks from the album in a bid to promote the record but in true Peel Session fashion actually contains two new tracks which as far as I'm aware have never seen the light of day.
