Missing the holey table
2007-12-09 22:38:05
In Lucire issue 24, one of my criticisms about the Quadrant Hotel in Auckland was directed at the table. This table is full of holes as an arty feature. Not a good idea: keys, cards and Strepsils kept falling through the holes.    Quadrant sales and marketing director Penny Evans wrote me today to note that the Quadrant’s new one-bedroom executive apartments have glass-topped tables. They have separate work desks and the internet signal is superior, she tells me.    They certainly look nicer, as the photo shows—though the regular rooms’ interior design was not actually bad. It’s just that that darned table won few prizes for practicality. I might test-drive the rooms in 2008.

New watches from TAG Heuer, Maria Sharapova
2007-12-09 18:16:03
TAG Heuer brand ambassador, tennis champion Maria Sharapova , presented several new women’s watches yesterday (Dec. 8) in Miami from the company’s Professional Sports Watch, Carrera and Formula 1 series.    The Professional Sports Watch is ‘inspired’ by Sharapova, and is made of ultra-light titanium and able to absorb 5 kg of shock. It is available in anthracite or the tennis player’s ‘signature pink’.    The Ladies’ Carrera is in the same pink and is designed for the woman who ‘shares TAG Heuer’s driving passion.’    Finally, the Formula 1 Chronograph with Diamonds blends sports functionality with glamour, embellished with 120 diamonds (0·75 ct.) on the bezel and 11 diamonds (0·081 ct.) on the dial.

The making of a Lucire cover
2007-12-08 22:08:23
I know some readers are fascinated about how a cover takes shape at Lucire. Again, before these go into the archives, we present the making of the shoot from issue 24. Make-up with Emma Foley Photographer Kelly Thompson discusses the shoot Vanilla works on the hair Thompson shoots Kenzy Cheeseman    If you have been following this blog, then you’ll recognize Kelly Thompson’s name as the illustrator who exhibited her Women of Your Dreams works at Good as Gold last week. The exhibition is still on for those in Wellington, down at Good as Gold in Victoria Street. Doug Rimington shoots Nicky and Paris Hilton, Heidi Klum
2007-12-08 21:48:03
When we ran our tribute to Doug Rimington last month, we forgot to run some of his celebrity photographs. So, before they are archived in our DVD library, here are a couple from New York back in 2006 for your enjoyment. One is of Lucire cover alum Nicky Hilton with sister Paris Hilton at Heatherette—Doug always seems to be great at capturing the moment—and the other is Heidi Klum in her Project Runway capacity. Both images are copyright.    Doug is still flat-hunting in Sydney if anyone wants to offer tips.

Keds announces campaign with Mischa Barton
2007-12-07 08:02:49
Mischa Barton is still hot property, even though her role on The OC has long finished, particularly with the younger set.    Keds has announced that Barton is its new face for its line of spring 2008 sneakers, with the campaign having launched in New York earlier this week.    The release notes, ‘The theme of the new campaign, Be True, is inspired by old Hollywood glamour along with Keds’ classic Hollywood heritage, as noted icons Katherine Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn were devoted fans of the brand. Aptly, it was shot on a reconstructed movie set mirroring back lots of iconic films shot throughout the 1930s and 1940s. Photographed by world renowned fashion photographer Anne Menke and styled by Nikki Brewster, the shoot features Barton in the new spring 2008 collection, posing for her close-up, relaxing on set and enjoying the spotlight.’    The campaign, with 10 layouts, breaks February and is expected to run in Lucky, Glamour, Vogue, Teen Vogue and InSt

Audi readies A3 Cabriolet for February launch
2007-12-07 04:58:02
Audi has done well with Lucire’s annual Car to Be Seen in, being its inaugural winner at the turn of the century. And its latest model, the A3 Cabriolet , could fare well when it hits streets in February 2008 in Germany.    It’s more cohesive in appearance than the A4 Cabriolet, which I had the pleasure of driving in March. The A4 I had was the car assigned to Audi marketing manager Rachel Jones, so I felt rather privileged—especially as I was putting ks on to it before she could.    When I was in Christchurch testing the S5, I was pleased to note that the boss at the city’s Audi dealer, Archibalds on Manchester, Eric Swinbourne, was a fan of compact cars, especially the A3. We shared a view that it was a lot harder making a decent small car than a decent big one, in terms of packaging and cost. And he was enthusiastic about the A3’s arrival—and I can see why.    The A4 Cabrio will in essence be replaced by two cars: the A3 you see here and an A5 model next year

Isabella Blow cause of death official
2007-12-06 18:48:31
Connected to the next print issue of Lucire: it was sad to note that the earlier suspicions that Tatler contributing editor Isabella Blow had drunk Paraquat, the weed killer, have now been confirmed by the Gloucestershire coroner.    Mrs Blow had drunk half a pint, 10 times the fatal amount, and had concerns over her ‘waning celebrity status’, something that those who know her had hinted at when we researched our story.    Her psychiatrist, Dr Ian Pannell, had spoken with her prior to her suicide. He told the coroner’s court, ‘She had a perception of a waning career with attendant uncertainties about how she would support herself.’    Mrs Blow’s successful suicide attempt was one of many during her lifetime, and followed the method used by her father-in-law. Her grandfather, Sir Jock Delves Broughton, had also committed suicide after being acquitted of the ‘White Mischief’ murder.

Thanks to StyleInn; others welcome
2007-12-06 18:28:10
We have never done much promoting of the Lucire blog, but we are quite happy for blogging networks to syndicate our RSS feed. We’ve noted that the nice folks at StyleInn have started including Lucire: Insider as part of their coverage, as have others, and welcome them. A Feedburner link is at the top right of the screen (the usual RSS orange logo) and the regular Wordpress one is in the middle column of this screen.

Eva Mendes shows cheeky PETA campaign
2007-12-06 18:19:14
On the Lucire site today: the glamorous and very curvy actress Eva Mendes stars in the new PETA ‘I’d rather go naked than wear fur’ campaign.    Lucire is known to many animal cruelty campaigners and to PETA for its continual support of their causes, so unlike some publications covering the story, we practise what the organization preaches ourselves in our daily lives.    Unfortunately, being objective we sometimes feature fur in our catwalk reports, but we are always conscious of our own beliefs, so we try to balance it whenever possible with promotions for PETA.    You can read our story online, or head over to the PETA blog where there’s a full Q&A with Eva.

Wellington’s fashionable crowds
2007-12-06 17:20:49
If you were clever and in Wellington , New Zealand, you could have made two events scheduled for the same time last night. Kelly Thompson, the first New Zealander to shoot a retail Lucire cover, had an illustration exhibition opening at Good as Gold on Victoria Street (on till the end of December). Last night she already managed to sell 13 of her works.    Zambesi, meanwhile, launched the Samsung U700v cellphone at its Wellington store, following a similar launch in Auckland at Vulcan Lane.    When I left Kelly’s opening for Zambesi, I noticed she was attracting a more arty crowd, while Zambesi got in fashionistas and a selection of customers, with four models (two friends, Sarah Garlick and Cadbury Dream Model Search ’07 finalist Jordan James among them) walking about talking up the ‘Zambesi presents Samsung U700v’ phone. For the Findlays, four members of the family had come from Auckland to attend, including Marissa Findlay, whose photographic work appeared in Lucire

Patrick Dempsey of Grey’s Anatomy—let’s also not forget Loverboy and Meatballs III—is the new face of Versace’s men’s line, according to the fashion house. Donatella Versace said to the press, ‘He has that confidence, completely comfortable in his own skin, that is so attractive.’ Mr Dempsey’s campaign has already been shot by Mario Testino and breaks early in the New Year.

Build the bob: Ultimate Style and Ken Paves try it out
2007-12-19 05:10:21
Would you go short? The bob is the "it" hairstyle for 2007 and probably the beginning of 2008, and Ultimate Style convinces one woman to try it out at the Ken Paves salon. The video airs today on the Lucire home page.

2007-12-19 02:51:46

Thom Filicia dispels myth no. 6
2007-12-18 10:47:20
I know we started with no. 2, then no. 12, and we are now on no. 6 on Thom Filicia's Dress My Nest tips—but that's the order we've been given permission to post them in. As of last night, Thom has been dispelling another interior-decorating myth on our home page: that furniture has to be up against the wall.

The Sarkozy-Bruni romance is in the Zeitgeist
2007-12-18 04:01:49
Nicolas Sarkozy , the President of France, is enjoying a heck of a publicity honeymoon. First, he won the election. Then, he went to the US and gave a speech to the Joint Houses that had everyone from Dubya to Hillary applauding. His speech citing Israeli-Palestinian peace a few days ago was largely well received. And now, with news that he and model-singer Carla Bruni are romantically involved (according to L'Express, referencing the cover story from Point de Vue tomorrow) has brought Sarko into the realm of the gossip press (Bruni has been linked to Mick Jagger and Eric Clapton), as well as those of us who normally report on fashion.    Funny, I was reading about Ms Bruni a few days ago prior to any confirmation of her dating, so she is in the Zeitgeist as well. Do we media build these things up? I used to wonder before I was this involved.    The answer is no, at least not initially. I wish it were yes and I could paint some story about a conspiracy. But there is a Zeit

Cadillac heads Down Under
2007-12-14 01:06:00
[Cross-posted] Cadillac will head Down Under, according to General Motors-Holden's boss Chris Gubbey.    It makes sense: the brand is well known despite not having retailed here postwar, thanks to American media, President Bush and The Matrix Reloaded. GM has been making right-hand-drive Caddys for some time for the Japanese and the British. And with Saab as the only premium GM brand here (if you do not count Hummer) and Holden now retailing Daewoos in most passenger car classes below the Commodore, the American company does lack something in the snob sector.    Saab is not really for snobs, anyway: they are for people who want a safe, Swedish car on old Opel Vectra platforms. Cadillac will have some cachet, even if American cars tend to have far worse interiors than their European counterparts. In other words, snobbery is all well and good, but even snobs will want good value. Otherwise, I can think of a very nice Audi A4 or A6 that they can consider.    I have not driven th

Thom Filicia dispels myth no. 2: that all furniture must match
2007-12-13 05:43:26
Here's today's MyStyle.com clip. I love how Thom Filicia from Dress My Nest dispels another myth about interior design. This episode's myth: all furniture should match. Thom says, "Cobblers!' (Not that exact word: his statements are far better, as you'll see below.)

Summer Rayne Oakes one of Amica’s top 20 trend-setters
2007-12-12 23:27:09
I think it's way cool when another magazine calls one of your own one of its 20 most influential trend-setters under 40. And this is out of a global sample of people. Congratulations, Summer Rayne, for making it into Amica's list! It's much deserved—and yet another example of how we've been ahead of the curve.

Hayden Panettiere speaks on environmental literacy
2007-12-12 04:50:02
This is a clip with Hayden Panettiere from Heroes, where she speaks very briefly about the environment. I'm not entirely sure of the context—sometimes we just get links to these things—but I assume it's the end of a speech. I do know this is part of the Forecast Earth Summit which the Weather Channel hosted.

Bruni joins Sarko in Luxor
2007-12-25 20:51:37
The French political and gossip press, as well as some glossies, united over Christmas as President Nicolas Sarkozy's girlfriend, model-turned-singer Carla Bruni , flew to Luxor with his family to stay at the five-star Hotel Sofitel Old Winter Palace (left), near the Karnak temple. The family flew on a Falcon 900 private jet loaned by billionaire Vincent Bolloré. This was confirmed by the Élysée.    The Élysée states that President Sarkozy has an official visit in Egypt on the 30th, but has not elaborated on Ms Bruni's role.    The political left is critical of the relationship being in the limelight, despite an earlier poll showing that 89 per cent of French people regard it as a private matter.    Given the state of the non-political media, the attention Sarkozy and Bruni have received is unsurprising and cannot be levelled entirely at the President. While he has been attacked over a lack of solemnity for the office by Jean Matouk, a leftist economist,

People’s best and worst of 2007
2007-12-25 16:54:24
In today's video, People's Ericka Souter discusses her magazine's end-of-year double issue featuring the best and worst of 2007. Patrick Dempsey is the stand-out celebrity, and makes the cover as "Star of the Year'. Inside, there's an interview with President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush.    In addition, People pays tribute to eight other celebrities: Amy Adams: the Breakout Katherine Heigl: America’s New Sweetheart Carrie Underwood: the Chart Topper Tyler Perry: the Triple-Threat Matt Damon: the Sexiest Hero Johnny Depp: Most Versatile Actor Christina Applegate: Comeback of the Year Tyler Perry: the Triple-Threat Will Smith: the Biggest Legend    We'd say People's pretty on the ball with their picks as 2007 draws to a close. Now, who will be the stars of 2008? We wonder.
