H&M releases Fashion Against Aids collection
2007-12-24 04:45:45
Hennes & Mauritz's Fashion Against Aids collection appears in Lucire today, a few days after its announcement to the media on December 20. A quarter of the proceeds from the sale of the garments, available from the Divided section of H&M stores, will go to HIV and Aids prevention programmes.

Lucire’s Car to Be Seen in nominees for 2008
2007-12-23 15:54:03
Last night, the nominees for Lucire's Car to be Seen in 2008 were announced: Fiat 500 Ford Mondeo Jaguar XF Volvo C30 Audi A4 Audi S5    Look, ma: no minivans or SUVs. These still have not distinguished themselves, in our book. One looks much the same as the other—except for the Volvo XC60, which we hope to see in production form in 2008.    I had wanted the Renault Laguna (above) to make it, but the divisive styling has seen to its omission. Pity: the 5·5 l/100 km (55 mpg Imperial) dCi model sounded just right for our fuel-sensitive times. It's not often such a big car comes with a tiny 1·5 litre engine.    Still, out of the six nominees the final award should still be hard-fought.

Survey: 86 per cent believe Sarkozy’s image unchanged
2007-12-23 02:56:13
According to a survey published in Le Journal du Dimanche, 86 per cent of French people do not feel that the image of President Nicolas Sarkozy has changed since his romance with model-singer Carla Bruni became public. Eleven per cent believe his image has deteriorated, while three per cent believe it has improved.    Eighty-nine per cent believe that the President's romance is private and no concern of the public; the remainder believe the affair is a public matter.    The poll had a sample of 964 eligible people aged 18 and over, and interviewed people between December 20 and 21 (not October 18 and 19 as reported by AP).

Cars not to be seen in '08
2007-12-22 21:32:03
We'll announce the 2008 Car to Be Seen in nominees shortly on the Lucire website, but what gets us is how many mainstream models are in the reject pile. But at least the Australian Toyota Avalon and Rover 45 are gone. Chrysler Chrysler Sebring Jeep Patriot Jeep Compass GM Daewoo Tosca (a.k.a. Chevrolet Epica, Holden Epica)  Saab 9-5 Hyundai Kia Opirus Peugeot Citroën C-Crosser Peugeot 4007 Renault Nissan Note SAIC Ssangyong Rodius Subaru Subaru Impreza Suzuki Suzuki SX-4 Sedan

Van Cleef & Arpel sues Heidi Klum, Mouawad
2007-12-22 21:16:21
Reuter reports that Van Cleef & Arpel filed a lawsuit in New York last Friday against Heidi Klum GmbH and Mouawad USA, alleging that its Alhambra clover design had been copied and that the companies benefited from its reputation. Van Cleef & Arpel claims $25,000.    In copyright, the plaintiff has the onus in proving objective similarity, which may be difficult. The defendants may be able to discharge the claim by showing their developmental work. Van Cleef & Arpel may have to show that it is closely associated with the clover design and has established goodwill in it.    Without reading the pleadings, Lucire's observation is that the similarity is not immediately evident based on some of the better known Alhambra pieces. The Alhambra line is inspired by a four-leaf clover, as are the defendants' designs, but their respective executions differ. When seeing the Klum and Mouawad designs, van Cleef & Arpel does not immediately come to mind—there are closer

Swimwear for the baby boom
2007-12-22 20:59:04
With a baby boom at Lucire, this seems to be an appropriate story: new styles of swimwear for Mums-to-be. A Pea in the Pod, Mimi Maternity and Motherhood Maternity have new lines for the next spring in the northern hemisphere. The story won't make it into the print edition of Lucire here, but we showed the A Pea in the Pod tankini on the Fashion index page today. Expectant mothers are getting more spoiled for choice in 2008, to be sure.

2008-03-07 16:32:59
Some odds and ends from the last few weeks on the site that we might not have mentioned at ‘Insider’: Levi’s broadcasts in colour: the autumn–winter 2008 denim range; Sugarluxe’s high gloss: Chandra Michaels, the artist behind hot luxury brand Sugarluxe, held a trunk show at Austin’s beautiful Blanton Museum of Art; Talking Man to Man: for men [...]

In the archives: Sonia Gray, 2005
2008-03-06 05:22:43
I’ve been doing a bit of clearing out of old CD- and DVD-ROMs here at head office and among them was a shoot from 2005 by photographer Janet Liu. Obviously, as it was unpublished, she retains copyright in this image and I’m putting it up only for critiquing purposes—and to give Janet a small promotional [...]

Kouros v. Schwarzmann: newspaper owner sues blogger in Finland
2008-03-04 00:46:34
I haven’t been following this story, but I received a Digg about it today from my friend Igor Polyakov.    American expat blogger Phil Schwarzmann, living in Finland , is being sued by Iranian expat and newspaper publisher Alexis Kouros over trivialities, it seems.    I am getting this strictly from Schwarzmann’s side so I have not read [...]

Bill Clinton is stumping for Hillary, but is he hurting her campaign?
2008-03-03 19:15:08
Former President Bill Clinton has been singing his wife’s praises all over the State of Texas, but some feminists, myself included, are sceptical of his motives.    When our 42nd president visited the University of Texas at Austin Wednesday, February 27 (which was Chelsea’s birthday) he drew a crowd of around 6,000 people, according local news [...]

Angelina Jolie writes eyewitness account from Iraq
2008-03-03 07:52:13
Late last week, Angelina Jolie , UNHCR ambassadrice and actress, wrote an open letter published in The Washington Post, reporting her observations in Iraq .    I am always keen to hear first-hand reports rather than things filtered through some editorial agenda. This publication is no exception: I make it no secret that we support environmental causes—and have [...]

2008-03-03 06:22:59

Agyness Deyn, British Model of the Year, has taken her place.    The magazine stated, ‘Whether she’s sipping chai at the Russian Tea Rooms in Primrose Hill or kicking back at Henry Holland’s studio, she’s fash-fabulous … Rockin.’    Moss manages a [...]

While we were all hoping our favourites would win the industry’s most sought-after awards, that wasn’t always the case. By the [...]

Tying up loose ends: StarNow judging; forged New York letter
2008-03-03 04:37:26
We had to make our final decisions for the StarNow Australian Model Search 2008 today. We had a shortlist thanks to the voters who went in to StarNow, and chose from those models rather than the full pool. It was an interesting bunch and I do know the choices made by Lucire editor Laura Ming-Wong and [...]

University of Texas reaches out after broadcasters, Texas Democrats brush off students
2008-03-03 02:46:41
National media have been very clear. The Democratic candidates need Texas to secure their party’s nomination. Both parties have gone to the media proclaiming their massive efforts to reach young voters. The Democratic Party needed something big to grab attention (and voters) for the Texas primaries and both the Clinton and Obama campaigns had big [...]

Katoucha Niane, 47, confirmed dead
2008-03-01 05:29:21
Katoucha Niane, the model who graced Yves Saint Laurent’s campaigns in the late 1980s, has been confirmed as the body recovered Thursday in the Seine. She had been reported missing on February 1. French police officers are treating her death as accidental: it was believed that she returned to her houseboat drunk and fell in [...]

Fellow publishers, do you go through this?
2008-02-28 13:36:28
I can’t believe it: yet another stylist’s letter making the rounds in NYC that we have no knowledge of. Again, I won’t name the stylist, but if you are going to go around with a letter that bears my name and signature, I’ll give you one bit of advice: get the postal code right. Copying [...]

Checking the StarNow Australian Model Search entrants
2008-02-24 16:41:40
I’ve logged in to the StarNow site to see who has added their names and portfolios to the Australian Model Search that the agency is running.    I am happy to note that there are more ladies over 30, plus a handful over 45. To those ladies, I say: good on you.    There is no age [...]

Being a harsh judge helps in Miss New Zealand
2008-02-24 05:12:44
I see Miss World 1975 Wilnelia Merced—Mrs Bruce Forsyth now—was mentioned on our blog, which takes us into the world of pageantry once again (OK, bad segue). It’s the season for it and I am unofficially told that I will be judging Miss Universe New Zealand again.    Last year’s pageant was an eye-opener and this year I [...]

Saving the environment is in the jeans
2008-03-12 21:22:50
As part of our partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), it’s our pleasure to present its latest video in combatting climate change.    Don’t stop reading, it’s not that laborious. Its latest TVC is stylishly made, with music by Etienne de Crécy, and offers some genuinely painless tips on looking after your denim jeans—while [...]

Hands Up ’08 helping to stop human trafficking
2008-03-16 16:49:56
I enjoy seeing fashion and good causes come together. Douglas Voon (of Voon, where his wife Sophie designs) is putting a lot of effort into spreading the word on Hands Up ’08, a celebration of fashion, music and dance with the proceeds going to helping stop human trafficking in Malawi.    You can find out more about [...]

Is Vogue’s April 2008 cover racist?
2008-03-20 20:02:00
Vogue’s April 2008 cover with the Cleveland Cavaliers’ LeBron James and Gisèle Bündchen has been branded by some as being racist. As noted by the Plain Dealer over in Cleveland, Ohio: LeBron shares the April cover of Vogue magazine with supermodel Gisele Bundchen. It’s been noted by some that his open-mouthed screaming face and the way [...]

Rescuing the Britney Spears image
2008-03-22 18:59:12
With all the negative attention that Britney Spears gets, is it a good time to be marketing her Believe fragrance? It’s what we’ve alluded to in our beauty article online today.    We hope Ms Spears will get well—and that the paparazzi lay off her a little. Unfortunately, the Britney economy is worth hundreds of millions [...]

Adam & Eve, March–April ’08
2008-03-22 17:40:03
We’ve cooperated on a few pages with Adam & Eve. Raquel Olivo, who has a shoot that appears in Lucire no. 26, provided us with a stunning one shot in Malibu, Calif. For whatever reason we didn’t run this one—probably because it didn’t fit with our themes—but with Raquel’s permission we found a way to [...]

The three-pointed star goes Avantgarde
2008-03-21 04:47:19
The Mercedes-Benz C200K Avantgarde gets the Lucire road test treatment—rather than analysing horsepower and acceleration, we weigh up the style quotient. It passes—if you are looking for a car that expresses Germanic rationality with something special. It’s got a fight on its hands this year, with a revised BMW 3-series and a new Audi A4, [...]
