James Lovelock: Gaia Hypothesis
1970-01-01 00:59:59
James Lovelock: From Wikipedia: "The Gaia hypothesis is an ecological theory that proposes that the living matter of planet Earth functions like a single organism. An early recognition of some of the core assumptions of the Gaia hypothesis was given in the book Lives of a Cell by Lewis Thomas. It was first scientifically formulated in the 1960s by the independent research scientist James Lovelock, as a consequence of his work for NASA on methods of detecting life on Mars. He wrote an article in the science journal Nature, before publishing the concept in the 1979 book Gaia: A new look at life on Earth. He named this self-regulating living system after the Greek titan Gaia, using a suggestion from the novelist William Golding. The Gaia Hypothesis has since been supported by a number of scientific experiments and provided a number of useful predictions so is properly referred to as the Gaia Theory."Any of his books are a worthy read.

Daniel Quinn
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Daniel Quinn : Of all the author's out there that I have discovered Daniel Quinn has had the most profound effect on me. Profound in how I view the world, our hsitory and who we are. Many of his books repeat themselves - over and over he is telling the same message. What is scary is that this is needed. We have become so brainwashed and so "asleep" that it is nearly impossible for us to see the truth of what our culture has created - and destroyed.A quote: "We've got to find our way back into the community. We've got to stop living like outlaws. When we begin to do that--when we begin to acknowledge that the world needs us and that we belong to it, not it to us--I think our feelings of desperate loneliness and neediness will begin to evaporate, all by themselves."

Krishna Das - Kirtan Master
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Krishna DasSharing his heart through music and chanting is the basis of Krishna Das' own spiritual work;his way of serving the Divine within himself and others. In the winter of 1968, Krishna Das met Ram Dass, who had just returned from his first trip to India. After living and traveling with Ram Dass in the U.S., and hearing Ram Dass' many stories about Maharaj-ji, Krishna Das traveled to India, where he was blessed to meet and stay with this extraordinary guru. While living in India for almost three years, Krishna Das' heart was especially drawn to the practice of Bhakti Yoga—the yoga of devotion. Fanning the flames of his inner longing, Maharaj-ji led him deeper and deeper into the practice of kirtan—chanting the Names of God. As an appointed pujari (priest) for the Durga temple in Maharaj-ji's ashram in the foothills of the Himalayas, Krishna Das immersed himself in the worship of the Divine Goddess.Krishna Das spent as much time as possible with Maharaj-ji over the years in

Bhagavan Das: I discovered "Baba" through my exploration of Kirtan music. Like Krishn Das, Baba was another devotee of Maharaji. Baba is the guy that turned Richard Alpert (Ram Dass) onto Maharaji. This was the genesis of Ram Dass' book "Be Here Now". Baba now tours constantly promoting his music and Kirtan. His music is definitely worth listening to.

Throw Out those Teflon Pans!
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Teflon - Scourge of the Kitchen: There is more and more evidence that those Teflon coated pans in your kitchen contain deadly carcinogens. From alternet.org: "Better things for better living -- through chemistry." From the 1940s to the 1980s, E.I. DuPont de Nemours and Co. wooed customers with that slogan, one of the most memorable in American advertising. But today, two groups of DuPont products developed during that era -- fluorotelomers and fluoropolymers -- are showing how chemical-dependent "better living" can come at a high price. DuPont and other companies use those synthetic compounds to make an extraordinarily wide range of products, including nonstick cookware (e.g, Teflon), grease-resistant food packaging (e.g., microwave popcorn and pizza boxes), stain-resistant fabrics and carpets (e.g., Stainmaster), shampoos, conditioners, cleaning products, electronic components, paints, firefighting foams, and a host of other artifacts of modern life. But like many "better things" prod

Big Coal's Dirty Move
1970-01-01 00:59:59
From the January issue of Rolling Stone:As the world heats up, the coal industry is racing to build more than 150 new power plants before Congress decides to crack down on global warming JEFF GOODELL According to the American Heritage Dictionary, a suicidal act is one that is "dangerous to oneself or to one's interests; self-destructive or ruinous." By this standard, the coal boom that is currently sweeping America is the atmospheric equivalent of a swan dive off a very tall building. At precisely the moment that scientists have reached a consensus that we need to drastically cut climate-warming pollution, the electric-power industry is racing to build more than 150 new coal plants across the United States... click here for the rest of the article.

Do NOT Buy Horizon Organic Products!
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Land of milk and money Critics say Horizon and other mass-production dairies don't deserve the organic label -- and that the USDA needs to come up with a real definition. By Rebecca Clarren April 13, 2005 | The happy cow on the label of Horizon organic milk flies across the carton like some grocery-store superhero. The ubiquitous red milk carton in your local supermarket is like a stop sign for consumers: go no further, your quest for healthy milk ends here. The back of the carton assures us that Horizon milk is produced on certified organic farms, where "clean-living" cows "make milk the natural way, with access to plenty of fresh air, clean water and exercise." Horizon cows are not hopped up on antibiotics, continues the cheery copy. "Happy, healthy cows produce better milk for you and your family."Just now, though, at one of Horizon's dairy farms in central Idaho, the cows don't look too happy. What I have seen is a huge tragedy and a weighty matter, far weightier than I can put to paper. Indeed, the enormous horrors that my eyes have seen have and continue to see renew my anxiety and pain and my very being and feelings are shaken at the mere thought or flash of them in my memory.
