New Year's Resolutions
1970-01-01 00:59:59
I've never made a formal list of resolutions, per se, but I do like to think about where I'd like to be in the next year, and who I hope to become. Laurel Wreath's New Year 's Meditations was a perfect place to start (you can link up your own this week by clicking the picture). She asks us to reflect on our hopes, dreams and goals by asking, "What would you like to see God do in your life? How

Northanger Abbey
1970-01-01 00:59:59
I enjoyed Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen a good bit. The book jacket described it as "the most joyous of Jane Austen's novels," so I looked forward to a light and encouraging read. That is pretty much how I would describe it. I wanted to read something by Jane Austen, because I wasn't sure I ever had. I may have read Pride and Prejudice in school, and I know I've seen the movie, and the

My Guy
1970-01-01 00:59:59
In honor of our anniversary, here's a little tribute to Terry. After fourteen years of marriage (and being together for sixteen), I appreciate more and more the gift that he is to me. I thank God for bringing us together and helping us to grow closer together through job changes, the birth of children, cross-country moves and other joys and challenges. We always think we know what we want,

Studying the Psalms
1970-01-01 00:59:59
A common goal or resolution for the New Year that I often hear is to establish regular time in God's word, get closer to God, or put Him first. For some people, it's hard to study the Bible without the aid of a devotional or completing a formal Bible study book. Participating in Bible study classes and attending small groups that guide my study have been invaluable as far as increasing my

What I'm Reading
1970-01-01 00:59:59
I had mentioned that I wanted to publish a list of some of the books that I hope to read in 2007. I have also been toying with the idea of setting up an amazon store--mostly as a way to provide links to books that I frequently recommend or that I love, and secondly as a way to remind people who do enjoy my book-chat that if you are in the market to purchase a book anyway, that I would love it if

Visions of Sugarplums
1970-01-01 00:59:59
A Christmas Recap Sharing a Room--I don't know if he had visions of sugarplums, but sharing a room with Kyle at my in-laws house enables me to hear all his chatter. As he wakes up, he talks to himself. He's a sound sleeper, so at night it's not a problem to go in and turn on a lamp to get ready for bed and read a bit before going to sleep. But he wakes up and starts talking. At home, I leave

Santa's Coming!
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Santa is coming to our house tonight. You see, he is very smart. He knows that we will be gone to Gramm and Grandpa's house for Christmas. He also knows that we like to have our own immediate family celebration on our own, so he has come early, or late, ever since I can remember, since we're always gone on December 25. It only makes sense, because after all, he's kinda busy on Christmas Eve,

Christmas Rambling and a Cookie Tip
1970-01-01 00:59:59
I have felt a bit out of the whole Christmas spirit this year. Actually, I've really enjoyed shopping (about 75% online) and feel like I've gotten some great gifts for many people on my list that I think that they will really enjoy. But, the tree fell over after we decorated it, I didn't participate in Boomama's Bloggy Christmas Tour of Homes, and I wasn't quite sure what I was going to do

Joy to the World!
1970-01-01 00:59:59
I am continuing my look at some Christmas carols over at Faithlifts today. This month's theme is joy. Check out my thoughts on Joy to the World . Other Carols Blogged: God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen Away in a Manger

I Fell into Reading!
1970-01-01 00:59:59
I did it! I took Katrina's challenge to focus on reading. I have loved to read since I was a child, but as an adult, my reading habits are sporadic. I go on jags, reading novel after novel in every moment of spare time, preferring them to eating, sleeping and watching TV. I also really enjoy non-fiction--a travel book that will take me to another time and place and show me an adventure that I

Recipes--By Popular Demand
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Okay, maybe it's by mild inquiry, and not popular demand, but Laura and Shalee asked about some of the no-bake items I mentioned on Wednesday. I made up a sample plate, just so I could post a pic here: The pretzels are very easy, but a nice addition to a gift bag or goodie tray. I bought pretzel rods, dipped them in melted white chocolate, then Amanda sprinkled them with red and green sugar.

More Book Recommendations
1970-01-01 00:59:59
A couple of months ago, I announced my participation in the Cybils' awards. It's the first annual children's and young adult bloggers' book award. Many nominations were read, and now the finalists have been chosen. As a judge in the middle grade non-fiction category, these are the five books from which I will help choose the first ever winner of this award. As a side note, it thrills me to be

Do You Detect the Aura of Coolness??
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Well, you should, because thanks to my generous husband, who decided along with me a few months ago that we didn't really "need" one, but bought me one for Christmas anyway, I am now sporting this: In the long history of not being happy with a generous unexpected (but secretly-hoped for gift), I was really hoping for the full-blown ipod that stored video as well, especially as a method of

We Love Beverly Cleary, Too
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Heather over at Mom 2 Mom Connection has a great post up today called Beverly Cleary, the Storyteller. Go read it. I have been working up a post about why I like Amanda to read kids' classics, which I define as a book published at least twenty years ago. I think about what I read when I was a child, and I make it available to her. Additionally, we've discovered many older books, published

The Shakespeare Stealer Series
1970-01-01 00:59:59
A couple of months ago when I was shelving books while volunteering at Amanda's school library, an interesting looking book jumped out at me: The Shakespeare Stealer , by Gary Blackwood. I wanted to review this three-book series all at once, but I've had a hard time waiting. I am glad to see that it is available in one volume, which is always a thrifty way to purchase this type of series. From

I Say Maybe
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Rachel over at Home Sanctuary asked, "What's Your Slogan?". Since I go around telling you when I said yes, I think that it's only right to share the thoughts that this post brought about for me. I say "Maybe ," or "We'll see". . . a LOT. The eight-year-old has it figured out. She knows that "We'll see" usually means "no." In a sense, she's right, but actually what it really means is, "The

Superheros
1970-01-01 00:59:59
The Bible study that our women's group is doing at church is a little different this session. It's from a publisher of small groups, Serendipity House, and instead of it being an intensive at home study, it's mostly meant to be discussed together as a group. There are icebreakers at each meeting. For this week it was to fill in these blanks: "Disguised as a mild-mannered (your occupation), my

The Panera Experience
1970-01-01 00:59:59
I received an invitation in the mail earlier this week: This is an invitation. An invitation to come in and enjoy hand crafted-loaves of bread. . . to try inventive hot and cold sandwiches. . . . It's also an invitation to come in and unwind. At a spacious booth with a group of friends, in a big leather armchair, or a table where you can work with soft lighting and free Wi-Fi. This is an

Focusing on a Theme
1970-01-01 00:59:59
I am helping to teach my son's class in Pioneer Clubs at church. He's in the two-three year old Skipper class. The curriculum is great. This month, their memory verse is "God is good to everyone," and throughout the month we learn about how God provides for us. In addition to that, there are very toddler-appropriate tie-ins to each unit. Last week we focused on the fact that God hears us

All the Fishes Come Home to Roost
1970-01-01 00:59:59
This was my first read of 2007, and I enjoyed it so much! I've always enjoyed an interesting personal non-fiction account, be it an adventure story, like Into Thin Air, or a travel memoir, or a biography about an interesting person, because I am able to learn about a culture or occupation or hobby without opening a history book, or a newspaper, or a periodical. In this book I learned a good

I Said Yes
1970-01-01 00:59:59
"Mom, will you read to me while I take my bath?" "Yes." (we read, and enjoyed the first chapter of Mary Poppins) "Can I have dessert?" "Yes." "Will you read to me in bed for just five minutes?" "Yes." (another half chapter and six minutes of reading) It's not that hard. Why do I struggle against it so often? On the way home from dinner, I had not only decided to

Can You Guess What I Did Tonight?
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Overheard by the fly on the wall at Snapshot House: "Oh my goodness, that was bad." "Is he for real?" Along with a few outbursts into song, "Go greased lightin', you're burning up the quarter mile. . . ." and a little dancing too, to be honest. Then, an hour and a half later. . . . "Look at that headband!" Look at his hair. Even My Guy got into it, "This is LA, he doesn't have to yell." "

Six Weird Things About Me
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Katrina tagged me for this meme, and I was really glad, because I was thinking that I really wish I had a quick easy post that I could get up today. Whenever I read other people's answers to this type of thing, they seem so clever, so I don't want to fail. . . . That leads to number one: I'm a pretty competitive gal, but I don't cheat. See, I don't just like to win, I like to earn the win. In

Reading Incentives
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Some people don't like to read. Or they like to read, but realize that they like to do other things more, so they don't read. Or they read, a good bit, even, but realize that there are about forty more books that they would like to read if they had the time (this is me right now!). Even if as adults, we've decided to put reading books on the back burner, we usually don't allow our children

Causing a Stink
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Chris at Come to the Table recently posted a cute story. Read it and come back for my take. The comment I left said, "Next time I am tempted to yell, I will think about how I might respond if there were baby skunks around." Why should I treat skunks with more consideration than I treat my own kids? When I yell at them, they may hurt on the inside, even if they don't give off an offensive

My Personal Blogroll
1970-01-01 00:59:59
These are the blogs that I read daily, or I like to spend some time when I have a few extra minutes. These are all "tried and true." I find new ones I enjoy weekly, but I like to check them out a while, before they become "regulars," so stay tuned. . . . And know that I endorse these wholeheartedly. Not Your Mother's Slow Cooking Thursday
1970-01-01 00:59:59
I bought this book last spring, and I have really loved the recipes that I tried out of it. Many other slow cooker cookbooks have the same old recipes that sometimes end up lacking in taste. Since it's (finally) cold here in Connecticut, I've been craving this type of food. Last night was chili, and today I was looking for a good bean soup, and I found it quickly here. I have never

The Great American Novel
1970-01-01 00:59:59
I once told a friend as we were discussing writing, that fiction writing seemed so trivial and meaningless, and I couldn't see using my gift or talents writing it. She replied that she would love to write a good novel, because she loved escaping into a good novel herself and would love to be able to give others that same satisfaction. When I first spoke those words almost two years ago, God was

Mary Poppins
1970-01-01 00:59:59
First we saw the movie. Then we saw the broadway show. Now we are reading the book. It's a great way to compare and contrast the differences in how a story is told. They are all very different. The movie is the frame of reference for most of us. Julie Andrews is Mary Poppins and Dick Van Dyke is Bert. Who has gone through life without singing Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious? All thanks to
