The Blog Meme
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Barb at a Chelsea Morning left an open tag for this blog meme, so I took her up on it. Do you like the look and content of your blog? Love the look! Thanks to Susie at Bluebird Blogs. I am little bossy opinionated at times. I have loved so much of her work, that I just told her that I liked blues and reds and greens, but I didn't want it to look like 4th of July or Christmas. I had

What's New in the Blogosphere?
1970-01-01 00:59:59
It seems like there's a lot these days! One thing that I am excited about is over at 5 Minutes for Mom. The Ultimate Blog Party sounds like fun. Click the link to read the instructions on how you can be a part of it--by publicizing, linking up, and then visiting around and winning prizes to boot! If you want to publicize your blog or your business, you can donate a prize as well. I have

When to Quit
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Last week at Faithlifts, I wrote about making A Fresh Start. Fresh starts are important. A new year and all of the ideas of ushering out the old and ringing in the new cause us what we're doing and why. Is there a grudge I've been nursing that needs to be released? Forgiveness that needs to be offered? A hopeless situation that I should look at from a new angle? At the close of the post, I

Getting Around a Destination City
1970-01-01 00:59:59
I have written a couple of travel info posts (like this one about Portland) and have really been wanting to write about New York City, but I'm having a hard time sorting out the wealth of information. However, here's one tip that I can share with the whole Works-for-me-Wednesday crowd. Any time we go to New York City, I pull up a central spot on mapquest, like our hotel if we are staying

9.4 Things
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Katrina at Callapidder Days wrote today that the average mom thinks about about 9.4 things in any 5 minute period. I thought it was sort of interesting, so I thought I'd write it up for a quick blog post: How am I going to keep track of the five minutes? grabbing notepad and checking watch. Are the boys okay? I'm babysitting and I always worry more about other people's children than my own.I

A Two-Cup Morning
1970-01-01 00:59:59
From the moment that the whine of the burr grinder stops and the rich smell of the brew fills the air, coffee takes me somewhere. I'm not a complete coffee junkie, but I do love coffee--fresh whole bean coffee, strong and full-bodied, lightened with some half and half. But that first cup of coffee isn't just about the rich aroma, the creaminess of the half and half, the warmth, the caffeine.

I missed Jesus
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Recently I had been feeling a little bit of a spiritual slump. I had been reading the Word, praying, doing Bible study, attending church, but there was something missing. I wasn't feeling devoted when I read my devotionals. I know not to judge my own spiritual conditions by feelings, because God is unchanging, but I did know that something was lacking. I couldn't quite figure it out. But

The Husband
1970-01-01 00:59:59
A couple of months ago, I picked up Stephen King after a long hiatus from his work. You can read my review of Lisey's Story if you want to find out how that turned out for me. Sometime after I stopped reading King, I also stopped reading Dean Koontz. I don't think it was because of the subject matter, but because of boredom. I had enjoyed his mix of suspense and a type of science fiction or

L is for Life
1970-01-01 00:59:59
We live life just by breathing, but there's a difference between breathing and really living life. We so often forgo the present for the future: "I can't wait until the baby can talk." "When I finish school, then. . . . " "Once all my kids are in school. . . ." "When we've paid off the ________, then we can. . . . " We put in hard work while we're in school so that we can get a good job.

Photo Screensaver
1970-01-01 00:59:59
This may be one of those, "yeah, we know that" kind of Works for Me Wednesday entries, but here it goes anyway. As I was uploading digital pics one day, I thought that there must be some way to be able to use the pictures, to see them on a rotating basis. I should be able to use them as a screensaver. I went to START/Control Panel/Display. Then clicked on the screensaver tab, and one of the

I am Woman, Hear me Roar!
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Maybe word has gotten out about my drug-free (and easy) labor with daughter number one. Maybe my prowess of juggling Bible study, rearing children in different stages of life, a silly very part-time job, and keeping an immaculate house (or not) has gotten out, because I've been nominated in the Woman Power!--Best Representative of Women category. Nominations are still open until midnight today

When in Doubt, Shout
1970-01-01 00:59:59
I'm going to give you some advice that has worked for me all these years of my life. Talk. Just keep talking. Nervous about meeting a new person? Just talk more. A friend of mine pointed out this strategy of mine in junior high. She had come along with us on a beach vacation. We were at the pool at the condo and met some boys our age. Later that night she asked, "Do you know you talk a

The Greater Good
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Here's a newsflash. Hold on to your hats: Parenting well is hard. In fact, I think that parenting badly is probably hard, too. Amanda has been struggling with self-control at school: chatting with her friends, and shouting out answers instead of raising her hand (Who in the world would she have inherited that from?). At school, the teacher has given her a goal sheet, and she gets stars

Hope in Suffering
1970-01-01 00:59:59
We've all been there. We've all suffered. From the time that our first boyfriend broke our newly-opened-to-love heart, or before that when the person who we thought was a best friend became best friends with someone else. Those sufferings seem inconsequential now, but at the time, they really hurt. As we get older, the sufferings become more a part of the fabric of our lives: losses of jobs,

Cravings
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Salty? Sweet? Do potato chips and dip hit the spot or is it a chocolate chip cookie warm from the oven? Now that I've got you thinking, and wishing, and wanting. . . . What about our other cravings--to belong, to make a difference, to be noticed? How do we fill those? Do we covet what others have on their plate instead of being content with what's on ours? I have really enjoyed reading

Exercise Your Right
1970-01-01 00:59:59
If you think I'm talking about running or aerobics, then you don't know me very well. I'm talking about exercising your right to vote. If you think I'm going to talk about politics, then you still don't know me very well. I'm talking about blogging of course! And just like Toby Keith, I wanna talk about me! Exercise Your Right to Vote This really isn't about me. Yes, I've been nominated in

Why I Don't Have More Coffee Dates
1970-01-01 00:59:59
My husband is sweet. He fully advocates me not working and living the bon-bon eating life of a stay-at-home mom. In fact, he worries about me when he thinks I'm not "getting out" enough. We were recently talking about how things have really come together nicely now that we have lived here for over two years now. I think that because Terry feels responsible for our move here (since it was

A Valentine's Day Dinner for the Whole Family
1970-01-01 00:59:59
My husband and I usually go out to dinner for Valentine 's Day. We usually avoid the crowds on February 14 and go on the Saturday before or after that date. A few years ago, I made my first special family dinner to celebrate the Love Holiday. Amanda was a preschooler, and any excuse to celebrate was welcomed heartily by her (sorry, pun intended). I stretched my mind and went all out.

A Recipe for Friendship
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Our closest friends from Texas visited last weekend. We were remembering old times and thinking about how our friendship developed. We first met in our adult Sunday School class at church. Our class used to get together every month and play games. We got to know them a little better at these get-togethers. We ate at a certain Mexican restaurant (Oh, how I miss you, Del Pueblo!) at least

Dead to Sin?
1970-01-01 00:59:59
We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer (Romans 6:2b)? For we know our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin--because anyone who has died has been freed from sin (6 - 7). In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body

The Two Become One

Click the banner to read Kathleen Marie's idea for linking to poetic, prosaic and artistic expression each Saturday (and to read her beautiful poem). The more I unlock my mind to writing, the more that thoughts sometimes come to me in the form of poetry, which I certainly don't normally publish. I appreciate Kathleen Marie providing this forum for us to publish (and view) others' work in this

A Chance to Die (Amy Carmichael's Biography)
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Elisabeth Elliot wanted to profile one to whom she felt she owed a great debt. It was through the writings of Amy Carmichael that Elliot first understood the great message of the cross, the sacrificial Calvary love of sacrifice. Before reading this book, all I knew about Amy Carmichael is that she is revered as one who surrendered her life completely to Christ. After reading her biography, now I

Will You Read to Me?
1970-01-01 00:59:59
I've said it before, and I've said that I'll say it again, so I'll say it again: If you don't have a target, you're sure to miss it. WHAT: Read to Me 2007 is a mission to encourage reading to children. Most of us know that reading to children is a good thing. Most of us are busy. Most of us are selfish with our time (alright, I won't saddle you with that, but I will admit that I am

How Do I Love my Library?
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Let me count the ways: Free books--that's a no-brainer.It's a suitable outing for my toddler and me, looking to get out of the house (and again--a free one at that, not counting the petty fines that I've usually racked up). Libraries promote the love of books. Both of my kids accept the library as a fun outing, which means that they equate books with a hobby and an activity. They come by this

Amazingly Simple Home Remedies
1970-01-01 00:59:59
My friend forwarded me this email and I thought that these tips were too good not to share with the tip-hungry Works-for-Me-Wednesday crowd: If you are choking on an ice cube, don't panic. Simply pour a cup of boiling water down your throat and presto, the blockage will be almost instantly removed.Clumsy? Valentine's Day: Past, Present and Future
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Kathleen Marie posted about her first romantic Valentine 's Day and challenged us to do the same. I can't remember any schoolyard crushes that produced the ultimate show of elementary school love: the giant Hershey's kiss. The first Valentine's Day that stands out to me occurred when I was about fifteen, I think. I don't remember the whys or hows, but I went out to dinner with my dad to Red

This and That--the Book Edition
1970-01-01 00:59:59
When I got a Bassett catalog in the mail a couple of days ago, I immediately thought of THIS PICTURE that Jen posted a while ago. Well, I was astounded when I saw that it seems to be a trend. I can't seem to copy this picture, so just check it out here. I'll be the first to admit that I don't know much about home decor, but tell me--am I just wrong, or is this just pitiful (and a little

What Are You Waiting For?
1970-01-01 00:59:59
There are leaps to take into the pool---even in my ugly skirted bathingsuit. There are fine art museums to discover, and concerts to attend. There are new haircuts to try, and friends to call. There are blogs to read and there are moments to journal. There are songs to be sung and hot baths to take. There are moments to cry and then there are moments to hug your loved ones. There are arts and

This and That--the Blog Edition
1970-01-01 00:59:59
I don't know if I have read "This and That" on someone's blog somewhere, but I like it. If I'm stealing it from someone, it's unintentional, so just be flattered at the imitation. Since I am seem to be having lots of inspiration lately, and thoughts that I must share, I thought I would try this format for those deluges. Since I cannot manage to weave the random thoughts in my mind into a
