Helping families cope with PTSDPsychologists study ways to address PTSD in the context of relationships.By Tori DeAngelisPrint version: page 44The harrowing combination of nightmares, flashbacks, hypervigilance, hyperarousal, anger and depression that plagues people with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a devastating condition to experience. And it's often overwhelming for family members, too, experts say."PTSD tends to wreak havoc on intimate relationships," says psychologist Candice Monson, PhD, deputy director of the women's health sciences division of the National Center for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder.Indeed, epidemiological evidence fingers PTSD as one of the mental health conditions most likely to lead to relationship problems: Common examples include PSTD sufferers not wa

This is one of the main reasons I wrote my book PTSD: Pathways Through the Secret DoorWASHINGTON (AP) -- Multiple new efforts aimed at stemming suicides in the Army are falling short of their goal: The service anticipates another jump in the annual number of soldiers who killed themselves or tried to, including in the Iraq and Afghanistan war zones. As many as 121 soldiers committed suicide in 2007, an increase of some 20 percent over 2006, according to preliminary figures released Thursday. The number who tried to commit suicide or injured themselves for some other reason jumped six-fold in the last several years - from 350 in 2002 to about 2,100 incidents last year. Officials said an unknown portion of that increase was likely due to use of a new electronic tracking system that is more tho

By: Rick Nauert, Ph.D. Senior News Editor-->Reviewed by: John M। Grohol, Psy.D. on January 16, 2008Wednesday, Jan. 16 (Psych Central) -- Self-reported post-traumatic stress disorder has elevated 3-fold among combat -exposed military personnel since 2001, according to a study reported in the British Medical Journal. In response to concerns on the health impact of military deployment, researchers in San Diego analyzed the effect of deployment on over 50,000 military personnel who were taking part in the Millennium Cohort Study (a large 22-year study of the health of US military personnel).Prior studies have estimated as many as 30 percent of Vietnam War veterans developed post-traumatic stress disorder at some point following the war and, among 1991 Gulf War veterans, as many as

Data sought on veterans' suicide
2007-12-12 19:28:00
By KIMBERLY HEFLING, Associated Press Writer The parents of an Iraq war veteran who committed suicide and members of Congress on Wednesday questioned why there's not a comprehensive tracking system of suicide among Iraq and Afghanistan veterans.Mike Bowman, of Forreston, Ill., said his son, Spc. Timothy Bowman, 23, is a member of the "unknown fallen" not counted in statistics. His son, a member of the Illinois National Guard, took his own life in 2005 eight months after returning from war. Bowman said he considers his son a "KBA" — killed because of action."If the veteran suicide rate is not classified as an epidemic that needs immediate and drastic attention, then the American fighting soldier needs someone in Washington who thinks it is," Bowman said.Bowman was one of several witnesses

PUSSIES::: I never had to do this. I used the "art of verbal persuasion" Therefore the following truths about "the company" show me what weak pussies our governement "spooks" have become. I've done some things I am not proud of but never this B.S. and the politically correct justification of it.This article burnt my ass. I am not usually an emotional person but....WASHINGTON - The CIA's waterboarding of a top al-Qaida figure was approved at the top levels of the U.S. government, a former CIA agent said Tuesday as agency director Gen. Michael Hayden prepared for questioning by congressional panels about the destruction of videotapes of terror suspect interrogations. According to the former agent, waterboarding of Abu Zubaydah got him to talk in less than 35 seconds. The technique, whi

Failure to communicate…

Failure to communicate…by Timothy KendrickThis was one of my biggest faults in my entire existence on this earth. For many years I did not listen to anything except what I wanted to hear. My mouth overrode my, er, uh ass on more than one occasion.I did not realize at the time that the greatest key to success was the Art of Listening. Years later I would hear Steven Covey say “work diligently to understand than to be understood”Looking back and to this moment, every successful relationship I have is because of my ability to listen. Get my family together and they are the biggest bunch of talkers I have ever heard. The only one who listens is my Step-Dad. My mom jokes sometimes that I am the only one who made any money out of speaking. The truth is, it is from listening that

120 War Vets Commit Suicide Each WeekBy Penny Coleman, AlterNetPosted on November 26, 2007, Printed on November 26, 2007 this year, using the clout that only major broadcast networks seem capable of mustering, CBS News contacted the governments of all 50 states requesting their official records of death by suicide going back 12 years. They heard back from 45 of the 50. From the mountains of gathered information, they sifted out the suicides of those Americans who had served in the armed forces. What they discovered is that in 2005 alone -- and remember, this is just in 45 states -- there were at least 6,256 veteran suicides, 120 every week for a year and an average of 17 every day.As the widow of a Vietnam vet who killed himself after coming home, and as the author of a book for which I in

VA Fact Sheet on PTSD
2007-10-14 19:44:00
VA Fact Sheet on PTSD: How is PTSD Measured? How can one tell if distress after a personal tragedy is a normal reaction to an upsetting life experience or something more serious? It can be difficult to know whether distress is a normal reaction or a symptom of something more serious. Even experts may require the results of a detailed evaluation to answer this question. Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is only one of many possible reactions to a traumatic experience. After a trauma, some people become anxious, some become depressed, and many find that they are not able to deal with their responsibilities as well as they had before the trauma. Although the majority of people are distressed for a while, over a period of a few weeks to a few months, most find that their upset lessens and the

Fear And The Subconscious
2007-10-04 20:55:00
Fear can seem very real. It is our perceived value of fear that helps or hurts us while finding solutions to our daily challenges and problems. I believe that discourage is the opposite of courage. However, fear can cripple you to a point of not even moving or taking any action because of the unknown. Fear can take on a life of its own. In combat, the Fear is indescribable. What are we afraid of, fear of failure? Some of the great inventors and leaders of this world have failed before they found the solution they were looking for. Failing is not Failure, giving up is failure. Are we afraid of success? I had to dig deep on this one because all of the unhealthy input I allowed put in my mind throughout the years. A poverty consciousness is very real. My solution for fear is

As most of you know my passion for finding solutions for post-traumatic stress disorder takes me to many places (in my mind and otherwise). The bulletin I posted earlier is from Zero Limits: The Secret Hawaiian System for Wealth, Health, Peace, and More by Dr. Joe Vitale and Ihaleakala Hew Len, PH.DSelf Identity through Ho`oponopono is about opening doors to greater understanding and deeper awareness of life and one's purpose as an individual incarnated on earth as an inhabitant of humanity. You as a soul are precious. Knowingly and unknowingly you impact all about you through thoughts, words, deeds and actions.Self Identity through Ho`oponopono is a process of letting go of toxic energies within you to allow the impact of Divine thoughts, words, deeds and actions.Ho'oponopono means to

Half of the young veterans -- ages 20 to 24 -- with steady employment earned less than $25,000 per year, it found.Article continues below: (use left/right arrows in screen to view more videos)Young veterans "
