Persepolis
2008-02-25 16:20:00
Yesterday, as a favor to my brother who makes comicbooks, I was dragged along to see the movie Persepolis. I had seen about 1/3 of a 30 second commercial for it the night before, but other than that I was completely in the dark as to what to expect. It was awesome. I give it three snaps in a Z formation. It's based on the comic and life of Marjane Satrapi, who grew up in Iran during the Islamic Revolution. As she eventually moves to France, the film is in French, but it's subtitled in English, so no worries. The entire film is also animated, but it's definitely not a kid's movie. There's a great balance between historical context and the character development of the quirky, outspoken, punk loving Marjane. It's a refreshing departure from other recent releases, and it's a far far reach from

Planetary never breaks for snow
2008-02-22 14:23:00
When your city is covered in at least four inches of slush, at least a thousand pounds of soaked garbage and probably two tons of salt-which destroys your shoes, not snow-I like to imagine being somewhere else.Like here, in France with Beirut, one of my favorite bands.

Things I'm Currently Rocking
2008-02-12 11:48:00
As if the world really cares at all what sort of things I'm into, I have decided for blogging purposes to compile a short list of things I am really into at the moment. Enjoy....1. SweetTart Valentine's Day HeartsBasically, we all know SweetTarts rule, but their version of candy message hearts rule harder because they are infinitely better than those chalky, disgusting ones that come in that little box. The sayings aren't that great, but they are festive and won't make you want to vomit while eating them like those other ones. I mean, who actually likes those ones anyway?2. The Acme Heart MakerSpeaking of Valentine's Day themed things, one of my favorite things to do this time of year to show your friends and loved ones you care is making them a customized candy heart at the Acme Heart

Holiday trip
2008-02-05 21:15:00
It's a little late, but we like to spend the holidays together at good ole Planetary, and the first time we could all get together and exchange Santa gifts was well after the holidays. For me, that means waking up at the asscrack of dawn and hopping a train to the motherland. (Boston)It's about five in the morning, the sun's coming up, and I'm watching the pollution roll from New York city and fade into the distance. I hate five in the morning. This is what I stare at for four and a half hours on the train.Meeting 1.Meeting 2.Meeting 3.The trip literally was less than 24 hours, but NYC was warm and welcoming.

Hey there Planetarians!
2008-02-05 18:39:00
I'm Casey and I just started interning with these fine people. I'm a recent transplant to NY, originally from Boston. What's on my ipod you ask? Well I'll tell ya! Against Me's New Wave, and....that's it. I just got it and could only figure out how to put one album on it. Nevertheless, it's a really good album. I'm also really feeling The Avett Bros new album Emotionalism and Deer Tick's self titled. Other fun facts about me: My favorite word is trouser, my favorite fictional band featured in a movie, television show, or mini-series is a tie between The Beets from Doug and Captain Geech and the Shrimp Shack Shooters from That Thing You Do. My favorite tv shows are The Office, Heroes, and Mythbusters, and my favorite Snapple flavor is Blueberry Iced Tea. That's pretty much me in a nutshell.

Ouch.

Bands Around Boston: Chuck Ragan // The Middle East Downstairs
2008-01-28 14:33:00
Last night, Chuck Ragan (of Hot Water Music) brought his grizzly-voiced brand of acoustic songcraft to the Middle East and I for one was pleased. Last year, Ragan released Feast or Famine on Side One Dummy, proving to all his HWM fans that gruff punk rock guys can still bring the rock and sing passionate songs while adding a more folk-related element. Each song on the album illustrates Ragan's ability to change musically while keeping a lyrical focus on the things most important to him: Friends and Family. Even in his live performance, he shows the importance of these two when he invites on stage touring buddies Ben Nichols (of Lucero) and Josh English (of Six Going on Seven) to join him in the fun. The lighting was dark so my pictures sucked, but as you can see from above, not only di

Alana and I went to the Jones Street Boys show at Soundfix in Brooklyn last week. If you've never been there, it's a newly redone cross between a show space and a coffee shop, attached to a great record shop. Normally, it's just about the most relaxed show space around. Apparently not when the Jones Street Boys are there. The music itself was really incredible, and having seen the band a ton of times, including Danny Erker and Jon Hull in their previous band, I've never heard them sound better. Their midwest tour did them well in many ways.I have no idea where the wigs and sombrero came from, but I'm pretty sure it had something to do with the beer. The Jones Street Boys Website

Daniel Merriweather

Ok, I have lots of work to do, so I can't stay long, but this song is incredible. Honestly, I was a little disappointed when I searched out more of Merriweather's work, but just this song is enough for me to remember his name and keep checking in on him. I found this on Soundslam, so you can find more there. I should get back to work.Daniel Merriweather's Myspace

Our Stage / Skewere BBQ SXSW contest
2008-01-14 12:03:00
This happens every year, i just can't bring myself to start thinking about SXSW until January. Well, it's January now and we're less than 8 weeks away from Austin, TX, good music, beer and BBQ . And speaking of BBQ, Planetary and OurStage .com are running a contest right now and the winner will be added to the Skewer BBQ party at SXSW at Maggie Maes, right on 6th St. Full contest details can be found here, all it takes to enter is to sign up is to register for ourstage and add a song to either the Rock, Indie/Alternative, Punk, or Hard Rock music channels. Wooooooo Austin!

Richie Havens and Groove Armada
2008-01-12 09:25:00
I saw Richie Havens at Mohegan Sun (a casino in CT) maybe ten years ago. He's incredible live, and a music legend who normally goes under the average person's radar. Cruising around the information superhighway yesterday I found this video from The Weight. Groove Armada and Richie Havens recorded this in 2000, and I hadn't seen the video of anything live until now. If you've ever seen Richie Havens live, who I think became known from playing the original Woodstock, and normally plays solo with an acoustic guitar, it's odd to see him fronting a full band. For more on Richie havens and how he came together with Groove Armada, check out The Weight

Sickness Reigns...so does KEXP
2008-01-09 09:59:00
One by one, we're all getting ridiculously sick here at Planetary. I felt it this morning, where I used the snooze button like each hit was a shot of white blood cells. But to no degree did I feel any better. As crappy as I feel, we're sitting here listening to (the new KEXP DJ) Shani's Music That Matters podcast in a fairly quiet office (rare moment!) often interrupted by my obnoxious sneezing. My friend Shawn has been a fan of podcasts and particularaly Music That Matters for a while now, and he's definitely turned me onto it. It's superior to WOXY, in my opinion, and there was a particular podcast for the Decibel Festival in 2006 where it started off with Apparat's "Montreal" from his Berlin, Montreal, Tel Aviv 12" - so so very good. Since then, I was hooked. Also, Planetary works with Lo

Clean Sl8 in Oh 8
2008-01-04 10:08:00
Since 2002, I've put a lot of effort into the Top Ten list, which really went off when mine was published along with the rest of the CMJ staff in 2003 while I interned there. Being in an office that moved so fast through piles and piles of undiscovered Top Ten material, I came out on top with, hah, The Distillers. (Actually, I found the link here...scroll on down to Vicki Siolos, Intern.) Nevertheless, since graduating college and leaving CMJ, I started to turn my Top Ten into a big deal by making it one.In any case, I had a bit of a dilemma in 2007. My favorites included the likes of Gui Boratto's Chromophobia, The Cribs' Men's Needs, Women's Needs, Whatever, and yes...even Radiohead's In Rainbows. A lot of my list consisted of a lot of obscure electronic music, which bothered me more tha

Vacation is ovaaaa!

alcohol moleculeBack in the office today! After playing some musical chairs, I think we're all getting readjusted to company life. Catching up with some Stranded In Stereo, and the press department neck-deep in e-mails and correspondences to get back to...it'll be a busy week.I mean half-week...hooray!The above is a great example of my personal vacation. Though food was the culprit of my indulgence while being back home in New York with my nuclear family + beagle in tow, it was the times with my Boston family (consisting of fellow alcoholic peers) that was the most memorable.Or, actually...perhaps "memorable" is not the right word.Oh demon alcohol, memories I can't recall... - The KinksLooking forward to 2008! Of course, it'll only get busier...Wikipedia: Alcohol

From the WTF department
2007-12-11 15:17:00
I was browsing the internets today and came across some clips from a kids show on Nickelodeon that is bizarre beyond words. It's called Yo! Gabba Gabba and is the brain child of Christian Jacobs (Aka MC Bat Commander of the Aquabats!) There's a pretty strong musical element to the show, they've had live performances from Smoosh, The Shiny Toy Guns, Cornelius, and The Shins. Biz Markie also has a regular feature on the show called "Biz's Beat of the Day" which is instruction on how to beat box. There's a couple of clips below including a "Biz's Beat of the Day" and Elijah Woods dancing. I'm going to DVR this just because its so bizzare i have to see a whole episode, and whatever drugs they were on when they came up with this, i'd like to know.Party in my Tummy?"Biz's Beat Of The Day"Eli

You should click play before you begin reading this.Last week, Planetary made an official trip to the greatest show on earth. Dany, Adam, and I went to The Blogworld And New Media Expo in Las Vegas . We shared a booth with Blogcritics and went to more than our share of panels on everything from how to be a critic, to how to grow capital for your new media business. The weather was great, and we made friends and money. (I made 17 whopping dollars!)I also found Chuck Woolery, Carrot Top, The World's Biggest Gift Shop, and a dirty club to grow old in.

SXSW Recap
2008-03-21 14:49:00
Well, another SXSW is behind us and as usual, I'm beet and could go a year before I see BBQ again. As usual, saw some great bands, including Elf Power, Cloud Cult, Red Romance, TAT, Does It Offend You, Yeah?, American Princes, Kaki King, Moby, Throw Me The Statue, and a whole bunch more. Unfortunately, I'm pretty new to the idea of owning a camera, so at most shows forgot to take pictures, but below are some photos from highlight shows.Min Mae from Portland played a great set at the Yarr!/Grey Day party. If Neil Young played Shoegazer. Good stuff. its always nice seeing bands play outside in the middle of the afternoon.Later that night i caught Kaki King for the first of two shows last week. Her live set always blows me away, and yet another show outside. I love Austin. The next time

Live Concert Spoiler Alerts.
2008-05-01 21:05:00
Remember when you first saw Titanic, and you knew right away that most everybody was going to die? When you can see the end right from the beginning, it's something of a spoiler alert. The same thing happened last night at Planetary/Stranded in Stereo's club night at Rehab. Since the singer of Breaking Laces looks like this:and Ben Gibbard looks like this:I already hand a notion that they were going to play a Death Cab for Cutie song. And they did, and it was great, but come on. His glasses and haircut totally gave away the final song even before they started playing it.You should know from the beginning that the Planetary/SIS club nights are always going to be fun, and thus you should join us next month (May 28th) at Rehab for another round of it.
